Schreiber Rubber Duckie Race Moves Online Center Receives Matching Grant According to Dan Fink, director of marketing and public relations for the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, this is just the second time that Schreiber has received a $250,000 matching grant in its 84year history, and both times it has come from the Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation. “This one comes

at a critical moment for us as we work to navigate a COVID-19 world,” Fink remarked. “Like many nonprofits, we’re facing a challenging period in the next 12 months.” The grant will provide a dollar-fordollar match for all the money raised by Schreiber starting June 11, when the See Schreiber Center pg 3

Schreiber’s 32nd annual Rubber Duckie Race will be virtual for the first time in its history. Souvenir duckies with a “Choose Your Own Adventure” theme will accompany ticket sales, which will end on Sept. 12. Ticket proceeds will be matched by a grant from the Stabler Foundation.

Trinity United Church of Christ (UCC), 2340 State St., East Petersburg, last year, learned about how they are “Knit in God’s Love,” which was the week’s theme. This year’s VBS theme will build on that curriculum with the theme “Still Knit in God’s Love.” The concepts taught last year highlighted biblical examples of items being knit in God’s love: human bodies, communities, the Earth and all its creatures, and God’s presence in individuals’ days. The entire week was a demonstration of connection among community See VBS pg 2

The seventh annual golf tournament hosted by the Hempfield girls’ and boys’ basketball booster clubs will be held at Four Seasons Golf Club, 949 Church St., Landisville, on Friday, Aug. 7. Check-in will open at 11 a.m., and play will begin with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Registration is requested by Friday, July 31, but walk-up registration will be available. The tournament will take place rain or shine. A cost per golfer has been set and includes a picnic-style lunch, cart rental, a buffet dinner, refreshments, and contests. Team and individual prizes will be awarded. Non-golfers may attend the awards dinner, and separate fees have been set for adults and for children age 12 and younger. Format adjustments will be made to the event following the recommended COVID-19 prevention guidelines, if necessary.

The proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Hempfield School District’s girls’ and boys’ basketball programs. The booster clubs’ members are athletes’ parents and other people who are interested in supporting, improving, and assisting the district’s basketball programs, said parent volunteer Daren Moffatt. The groups’ sphere of influence covers all grades from elementary to high school. Their primary function is fundraising and volunteering to support the programs and to promote school spirit through athletics. As examples of what the booster clubs provide for all players in the programs, Moffatt listed league and tournament fees, video equipment, apparel, sneakers, team equipment, team-building activities, strength and conditioning activities, and team recognition events. The golf tournament is one of the major sources of funding for the booster clubs. The income from the event will have extra importance this year. Although the basketball teams completed their seasons before the shutdown in March, their 2021 seasons might be impacted.

VBS from pg 1 members as Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1905 Broad St., East Petersburg, collaborated with Trinity UCC to produce the event as it has in previous years. Additionally, the congregations’ respective prayer shawl ministries contributed to the VBS. The experienced crafters taught VBS attendees to knit, crochet, and finger knit during the week. The older children made pocket-size prayer shawls that were given as gifts to church members who were unable to leave their homes. The prayer shawl group members, their friends, and the VBS community also made scarves and hats that were later distributed through community meals and the Lancaster Food Hub. “Trinity and Zion’s prayer shawl groups, ‘Knit in God’s

Love’ and ‘Skeins and Scones,’ may not be able to meet at this time, but from home, members continue to knit, crochet, and weave items such as scarves, prayer shawls, pocket prayer shawls, baby hats, and lap blankets for people who are going through rough times,” said Dina Slechta, who is part of the VBS leadership team representing Trinity UCC along with Diane Rice. Lindsey Wagner is the team’s liaison with Zion. The two churches have worked together again to create the “Still Knit in God’s Love” curriculum for this year’s VBS.The same theme song and similar concepts will be included, but there will be new Bible stories and different perspectives, which will highlight the results of enduring adversity with God’s help: understanding, compassion, strength, ingenuity, and humility. “We want VBS to be a positive

Instead of a closing program on July 17, a video call featuring a Bible story bingo game has been planned. “No prizes, just having fun together, still knit in God’s love,” Slechta remarked. Slechta is eager to see how VBS comes together. “I can’t wait to see what all of the different pieces look like in the end,” Slechta said. “It is also fun to learn new things. We are having to learn to use technology that we have not had to use before. It is exciting to see how it is all part of how God can make good things come out of adversity.” Although VBS will be virtual, registration is requested and may be completed by visiting w w w. t r i n i t y e a s t p e t e . o r g / ministries/vbsrally-day/ or calling Trinity UCC’s office at 717569-1632. Rather, it will be offered as an online choice board, which some teachers have used for distance learning. The program will run from Monday, July 13, to Friday, July 17, at participants’ convenience. They will be able to choose short activities that work for their time, interests, and technological abilities, such as videos, coloring pages, and crafts from an online list. Stabler Foundation forwarded its approval. Stabler has committed up to $250,000, and Schreiber has one year to raise the matching funds. The initial $250,000 grant combined with what Schreiber hopes to raise from the community would mean $500,000 for the local organization, matching the amount generated from a similar grant by the Stabler Foundation in 2016. That grant was the largest contribution toward adding an infant room to Schreiber’s Circle of Friends Academy child care center. “This grant couldn’t have come at a better time for Schreiber, said Schreiber president James DeBord. “Obviously, with everything happening around COVID-19, raising revenue is even more of a concern than usual. The community rallied around us, as it always does, these past three months, but we don’t know what challenges are

online to limit personal contact during duckie transactions. Fun, new content, particularly contests and biographies of some of this year’s souvenir duckies, will be posted on the aforementioned website. Additionally, Schreiber has a new Duckie Mobile that will travel around Lancaster County selling duckies and bringing other excitement to neighborhoods. This year’s theme is “Choose Your Own Adventure and features some of the most popular souvenir duckies from recent years, including dinosaurs, unicorns, and cows. To honor health care heroes, doctors, nurses and other medical duckies are available as well. WellSpan Health received the Eisenberg Award in the category of Local Level Innovation in Patient Safety and Quality, which recognizes a project or initiative that focuses on making an impact at the local community, organization, or regional level. WellSpan’s Sepsis Central Alert Team program earned the award as an example of successful system changes or interventions that make care safer or advocate on a patient’s behalf. Begun in 2017, the Sepsis Central Alert Team is a group of registered nurses who have critical care and emergency medicine experience and who continuously monitor patients for signs of sepsis at five WellSpan hospitals from a remote location. The team is notified when WellSpan’s electronic health record system detects symptoms of sepsis in a patient’s vital signs, including temperature and heart rate, and lab results. When notified of these markers, the Sepsis Central Alert Team directly contacts the patient’s physician or nurse, so they can determine if the patient may be septic

The team has saved an estimated 350 lives since its inception, as it dramatically shortened the time it takes WellSpan to respond to sepsis cases and speeded up the time that patients receive lifesaving medications. Early identification and screening times improved from 67 minutes to 12 minutes. The Joint Commission and the National Quality Forum recently announced that WellSpan Health has won a 2019 John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Award - one of the highest safety awards in health care - for its Sepsis Central Alert Team, an innovative program that works to quickly detect and treat sepsis, a life-threatening medical emergency. WellSpan reported that it is the first Pennsylvania health system to achieve the honor in 15 years. The Joint Commission is known as the nation’s oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care, and the National Quality Forum sets national standards for health care performance measurement. The two organizations founded the Eisenberg Awards in 2002 to recognize the best examples of individual, local, and national efforts to improve patient safety and health care quality. The awards were to have been announced in March during the National Quality Forum Annual Conference in Washington, D.C., but the conference was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The last Pennsylvania health system to win an Eisenberg Award was the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 2004. Previous award winners have
