A banquet to battle breast cancer

Helpthe Fight will host its 14th annual fundraising banquet on Saturday, Oct. 7, at Spooky Nook Sports, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m., and the event will conclude at 9:30 p.m.

Only 500 tickets will be sold for the banquet, and the deadline for registration is Saturday, Sept. 9. Registration forms may be acquired at www.helpthefight.org or by emailing helpthefightnow@gmail.com. An early bird special will be offered to those who register by Thursday, Aug. 31.

The banquet will include a buffet dinner at 6:30 p.m., as well as a benefit auction throughout the evening. Items available to bid on will include artwork, jewelry, gift baskets, furniture, children’s toys, clothes, designer handbags and weekend getaways. Prize drawings will also be held during the event; tickets for the drawings will only be available to purchase with cash.

The items in the auction are donated by various businesses and individuals in the community leading up to the banquet. Help the Fight invites anyone who wishes to make a donation to contact its office via email or by calling 717-455-7095. The deadline to make a donation is Friday, Sept. 15. “We need the community’s support through donations,” said Susie Dailey, patient coordinator for Help the Fight. “Anyone who does artwork, makes jewelry or wants to put together a gift basket can donate.”

Help the Fight, a nonprofit organization based in Mountville, uses the funds raised from its annual banquet to meet the financial needs of breast cancer patients throughout Lancaster County. These activities can include assisting with medical bills, rent and mortgage payments and electric bills. Help the Fight also allocates money to provide medical screenings and mammograms for patients. During the

Buccaneer Classic to return to Hempfield

The Reading Buccaneers Drum and Bugle Corps will host the Buccaneer Classic competition on Saturday, July 15, at 6:30 p.m. The event will be held at Georgelis Law Firm Stadium, 340 Mumma Drive, Landisville, in partnership with the Hempfield Band Booster Club.

During the show, drum and bugle corps from Drum Corps Associates (DCA) and Drum Corps International (DCI) will compete against each other. The competition will feature groups from across the country, including the Bushwackers from Princeton, N.J.; the Skyliners from Scranton; the Saints from Columbus, Ohio; the White Sabers from Rochester, N.Y.; the Cabelleros from Hawthorne, N.J.; and the Buccaneers.

banquet, a patient who has been assisted by the organization will share her experiences.

Help the Fight was founded in 2009 by Lynda and Dave Charles, who organized the first banquet shortly after. Lynda was inspired to create the organization following the breast cancer diagnosis of her co-worker and Dave’s sister. The treatments prevented Lynda’s sister-in-law from working, and

she was left without insurance or an income. Lynda decided to organize a bake sale as Help the Fight’s first fundraiser, raising over $9,000. Help the Fight has come a long way from being a bake sale. Over the last 14 years, the organization has continued to extend its reach and has raised over $1.1 million for breast cancer patients in the area. The annual banquet remains its

largest fundraiser of the year. “All of the money we raise stays right here in the Lancaster area. We really pride ourselves on that,” Dailey said. “We’re so fortunate to have local businesses and people be a part of this and positively impact the community.”

Help the Fight is always looking for volunteers; those interested in volunteering can contact the office for more information.

Each group will have a total of 17 minutes on the field during the competition. Nine to 12 minutes will be allotted for the performance, and the remainder of the time will be used to enter and exit the field. The judges will keep track of each group’s timing and analyze the different aspects of the group’s performance, such as the brass section and color guard. The competition will begin and end with a performance from a Buccaneer alumni corps, after which the scores will be announced.

The partnership between the Buccaneers and the Hempfield Band Booster Club began in 2018, when Bill Powers, then the Hempfield band director and member of the Buccaneers, was looking for a location to hold an additional show after the Buccaneers’ home event in Reading.

The proceeds from the show are distributed between the Buccaneers and the Hempfield Band Booster Club; the funds given to the booster club assist the band with uniform and instrument expenses for its members.

The Reading Buccaneers is a nonprofit organization. Members pay to participate, but the corps provides instruments, equipment and educational insight on performing in a drum and bugle corps.

“I was drawn to the intensity of the music,” said Rick Thompson, co-chair of the Buccaneers. “There are no woodwinds, so it’s a bit different from your typical marching band.” Thompson joined the Buccaneers in 1989; prior to joining, he primarily drummed in garage bands as a teenager. Thompson marched for a few years but

returned as a volunteer in the ’90s. “It’s evolved over the years as a marching arts medium,” Thompson added. “It’s unique, kind of like marching band on steroids.”

Drum and bugle corps also differ from standard marching bands in the variety and focus of their performances. Drum and bugle corps work on a single show during a season, whereas professional marching bands will often rotate through several routines.

Tickets for the competition are able to be purchased on the Reading Buccaneers’ website and will be available at the door. Two rows of handicapped-accessible seats will be reserved for attendees with wheelchairs and their companions.

HARTZ Physical Therapy (PT) recently presented a check for $9,500 to Off the Streets, a nonprofit organization that has been active in helping homeless people in Lancaster County for more than 10 years. The money was the result of HARTZ PT’s second annual Spring Swing Golf Tournament, which was held on May 12 at Crossgates Golf Club in Millersville.

The Spring Swing Golf Tournament was organized by HARTZ PT therapists and avid golfers Daulton Rutter and Kevin Sisbarro.

Referrals from Off the Street’s community partners have increased significantly this year, as have the funds needed to assist with security deposits. All proceeds from the Spring Swing will be used for this purpose

Through the HARTZ PT Charitable Organization, founded in 2020, HARTZ PT spends an average of 50 volunteer hours and contributes more than $1,000 per employee in support of local charities each year. To date, the company has raised more than $300,000 by planning various charitable

events, including the annual Fall Blast 5K Run/Walk and Feed the Need, an April food drive to benefit Power Packs Project.

The Giant Company, in partnership with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, recently announced the 23 recipients of its 2023 Healing the Planet program. The grants were awarded in support of projects that address food waste prevention, reduction and recovery across the Giant Company’s operating area.

The recipients were named at an event held on June 22 at Dickinson College in Carlisle, which received $20,000 to complete an anaerobic digester project for conversion of community food waste and dairy manure into biogas and grid-tied electricity.

Grants range from $2,500 to $20,000. Projects located

in the Giant Company’s operating areas within Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia were eligible. Funding for the grants was provided by customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores who rounded up their grocery purchase to the nearest dollar from March through May, benefiting program partners such as the Rodale Institute and Planet Bee Foundation.

The following local Pennsylvania organizations are the recipients of 2023 Healing the Planet grants: City of Lancaster, Lancaster Compost Co-Op; Creative Community Grow, Harrisburg; Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education, York; and

York Fresh Food Farms. All funded projects address food waste prevention, reduction and or recovery and can include community composting, increased access to compost for agricultural producers, educational programs regarding food waste prevention, reduction and recovery, and diversion of food waste from landfills. Community gardens are eligible for funding but must have a food waste prevention, reduction or recovery component, such as education.

Since 2021, the Healing the Planet program has awarded grants to 110 recipients for projects connecting communities to green spaces

and improving or helping to protect local waterways and water resources.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has supported community improvement initiatives and encouraged community leadership, responsibility and a respect for the environment since 1990.
