EPC Golf Outing To Aid Good Samaritan Services By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Now more than ever, thanks to jobs and wages lost while the stay-at-home order was in place, resources for people experiencing homelessness or at risk of losing their homes are in demand. Thankfully, Good Samaritan Services (GSS), which serves individuals and families in Lancaster and Chester counties who have poverty-related needs, is prepared to help. “ We provide a wide spectrum of services that are customizable to each individual or family at whatever place they are at in their journey to stability,” said Shadoe Settle, GSS development and communications coordinator. “Our services are always expanding. Right now, we provide emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support services to men, women, and families in

Lancaster and Chester counties. Serving men is a new ability in Lancaster County, and we are very excited about it.” Although the need for the services provided by GSS has increased, the organization has been able to keep the lives of its existing participants stable, thanks to support from the community. “Our ability to provide support and guidance during this time enabled all of our participants to remain in their housing, pay their bills, and continue life as normally as possible during such an abnormal time,” Settle said. As with other organizations, the delivery of services had to change, requiring flexibility from both the GSS team members and participants. GSS continued to provide emergency shelter and residential housing services while maintaining state-issued safety requirements and conducting cautious intakes

for new clients. GSS family resource coordinators met with participants via Zoom, FaceTime, WhatsApp, and other virtual-meeting software to provide housing support services. The financial impact of COVID-19 will be felt for a long time to come, and GSS expects the need for its services to increase, Settle said. The nonprofit organization depends on donations and fundraisers to operate. One such fundraiser is the golf outing hosted by Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC). “Our partnership with EPC and their willingness to organize such a wonderful event has been an incredible blessing, financially and relationally,” Settle remarked. “This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year, and it has continued to provide funds needed to perform all of our services.” See EPC Golf Outing pg 4

The annual EPC Golf Outing on Sept. 25 will benefit Good Samaritan Services, which provides a range of services to assist individuals overcoming homelessness in Lancaster and Chester counties.

UDS Service Dogs Program Plans Inaugural Fundraiser Food Truck Event To Replace Tomato Festival

By Dayna M. Reidenouer

UDS Service Dogs will host its first golf outing on Friday, Aug. 28, at Meadia Heights Golf Club, 402 Golf Road, Lancaster. Program manager Lori Breece hopes it will become an annual event. “We have been trying to find a signature event that can bring in strong revenue for our program and get the community engaged,” Breece remarked. For more than a half-century, thousands of people have flocked to the western edge of Lancaster County for the annual Washington Boro Tomato Festival. The event has looked similar from year to year, featuring carnival games, performances by country music bands, and the ubiquitous tomato sandwiches made with the famous Jet Star variety. Even when the organizers changed from a

The Aug. 28 date was scheduled in August 2019. Breece said that when the shutdown occurred, she was afraid that the outing might have to be postponed or canceled, but final planning for the event is going strong. On Aug. 28, golfers may check in beginning at 8 a.m. Play will begin with a shotgun start at

In its place, the Blue Rock Fire Rescue support group will host a food truck event. Rather than occur on two Saturdays as the festival does, the food truck event will be held on consecutive days. Vendors will be ready for business on Friday, July 17, from 3 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, July 18, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. “We do not feel comfortable with big crowds gathering and playing games,” Blue Rock Fire Rescue support group member Dick Schock commented on the change. “A lot of people are See Food Truck Event pg 3

have been cut by half. “Any success will be a positive success because it’s new for us,” she said. The proceeds will be used to purchase more puppies for the program and cover veterinary costs, which can reach $2,000 per animal. With about 12 new puppies every year, UDS Service Dogs has vet bills for 25 dogs a year. Breece noted that in total, the program invests $25,000 in each dog. Clients are charged just $5,000. “We haven’t raised prices in 15 years,” Breece said. Breece is excited about the evolution the program has undergone in recent years. She credited the change to the implementation of a better business plan and processes four years ago. “We had to commit to bringing in more puppies (to be trained),” Breece said. “Now we’re placing six to nine dogs a year. We have eight staff members and 30 puppies in different stages of training. That’s a lot of growth.” Only a portion of the dogs that go through the training process provide mobility assistance. The others go to work as facility

dogs or become pets. Several UDS Service Dogs interact with children in schools and with clients in a counseling office near Philadelphia. Breece would like to increase the services the dogs provide. Currently, staff members are taking classes to become certified to work with veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and train dogs to assist them, and child advocacy centers are on the waiting list for support canines. “I can’t wait to do it because I know it’ll help these children who have been through so much,” Breece commented. “I know how dogs are already helping in schools. The centers will partner each dog with a child, and the dog will be with them as they move through the court system.” Anyone who would like to support UDS Service Dogs by sponsoring the golf outing may contact Breece at 717-7158753 or lorib@udservices.org by Saturday, Aug. 1, and golfers may register to play in the outing at www. udservices.org/golf through Friday, Aug. 14.

Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation has announced the cancellation of the annual Long’s Park Art Festival scheduled for Friday, Sept. 4, to Sunday, Sept. 6. The announcement is a response to the continued public health concern surrounding the coronavirus and COVID-19. Annually, the art festival welcomes 11,000 visitors from around the country to Long’s Park. Though the foundation is disappointed about the cancellation, it recognizes its social responsibility to ensure the public safety of the community. The foundation recognizes the significant financial burden this national crisis has created for many in the art community. The foundation is committed to supporting the artists who were accepted for this year’s festival based on a remote jury voting process held in March. In the coming weeks, a digital campaign will be developed to promote these artists with the goal of exhibiting their talent, while also encouraging buyers to purchase their work. Artists will be featured at www.longspark.org and social media channels including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn. The health and safety of our golfers and volunteers was the main driving force behind this decision, and we look forward to what a fall golf outing for this event will look like.” The Tee It Forward contest hole that was introduced last year will be continued. Giant Completes Pollinator Field making bees an essential part of the food supply chain and ecosystem. The Giant Company has also been selected as the first grocery retailer and first Pennsylvania participant to take part in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s InSPIRE study, where scientists measure and track the performance of the pollinator-friendly ground cover for applications to future solar energy projects. In addition to the benefits of the plants, the new solar array coupled with the one currently installed on the roof of the Giant Company headquarters will reduce 4.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide in the environment and generate enough power for the entire building. Native seed mixes provided by Ernst Conservation Seeds will act as a vegetative solution to beautify the site and provide valuable ecological functions. The Giant Company hopes the native meadow established will create a habitat for pollinators, birds and other small wildlife while improving the quality of the soil beneath it, reducing runoff and creating an attractive backdrop to the site. The field includes more than 20 varieties of wildflowers native to the northeast and central Pennsylvania like butterfly milkweed, mountain mint, blue mistflower and golden

Alexander. Robin Ernst, president of Ernst Pollinator Service, ex plained that as the field matures over the next few years, more than one million pollinator-attracting plants will provide pollen and nectar sources for honey bees and other pollinators, which will in turn pollinate local farm fields. The Giant Company also announced a new strategic partnership with Planet Bee Foundation. Based in San Francisco, Planet Bee is a nonprofit organization focused on driving awareness for pollinators while creating environmental stewards of all ages, in turn contributing to the well-being of bees. In celebration of the new partnership and National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company announced a $50,000 donation to Planet Bee Foundation. Planet Bee Foundation has constructed the beehives for the pollinator-friendly solar field and will tend to the health of the colonies as the bees provide their essential pollinator services to the local ecosystem. The foundation is also helping the Giant Company develop educational signs that will be installed along the on-campus walking path to drive awareness about the importance of bees to the grocery and agricultural supply chains.

In celebration of National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company recently announced it has completed a 7-acre pollinator-friendly solar field at its corporate headquarters at 1149 Harrisburg Pike in Carlisle. This initiative aims to create a synergistic environment, which contributes both to clean energy and support for bee and pollinator populations needed within the agriculture industry. Honey bees pollinate $15 billion worth of food crops in the United States each year, yet populations have been experiencing a decline for more than three decades, the Giant Company reported. Beekeepers across the United States lost an estimated 40.7% of their honey bee colonies from April 2018 to April 2019, according to the latest annual nationwide survey conducted by the University of Maryland-led nonprofit Bee Informed Partnership. A pollinator field provides Giant with an opportunity to educate team members, customers and the community about the role bees play in getting food onto their family’s table, noted Nicholas Bertram, president of the Giant Company. Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture deputy secretary Cheryl Cook added that nearly one-third of the nation’s food supply depends on pollinators,

WITF announced that central Pennsylvania families seeking a fun, educational experience at home can join the free “Summer STEM Adventure! Based on the “Engineering By Design curriculum, the summer camp style experience will guide families through a combination of PBS KIDS television programs, discussion questions, structured craft activities and career exploration for children in kindergarten through fourth grade. Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education is a student-centered approach that encourages development of skills such as problem solving, curiosity, communication and design thinking. WITF, the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Intermediate Units (IUs) 12, 13 and 15 partnered to provide

the summer camp in a format that may spark interest in STEM and its related careers, support different styles of learning, remove obstacles to participation, and meet educational objectives in a rewarding way. The IUs recognized obstacles to participation could include families not having craft resources or broadcast television signals at home. To overcome these challenges, WITF assembled 3,000 resource bags and 300 antennas for IUs to distribute to partner locations that serve families directly. Each free resource bag contains pencils, a pencil sharpener, crayons, colored pencils, paper plates, construction paper, safety scissors, a glue stick and the curriculum packet with instructions in English and Spanish. During the eight-week camp, families will watch featured PBS KIDS programs like “Wild Kratts and “Hero Elementary on WITF TV to learn about animal habitats, camouflage, mimicry, structure and more. A discussion guide and key vocabulary will help caregivers talk to their children about what they are watching. Then families will work together on an animal habitat design project using the materials in the resource bags. The curriculum also includes introductions to STEM careers for young learners, a suggested

book list and links to extension STEM games and activities online. The partners hope that participation in the “Summer STEM Adventure! brings many positive outcomes for children and their families. Educational goals for the program include learning about design principles, engaging in family conversations that help develop social and emotional skills, practicing making inferences, reflecting on content, discussing details and exploring careers. IUs will distribute the resource bags and antennas to the following partner school districts and locations: Bermudian Springs, Tuscarora,

Lincoln Charter School, West York, Upper Adams, Gettysburg, York Academy Regional Charter School, Chambersburg, School District of the City of York, LIU Early Childhood Classrooms, School District of Lancaster, Penn Manor School District, Steelton-Highspire Elementary (Salvation Army of Harrisburg), Susquehanna Township School District, Harrisburg School District and Camp Curtin YMCA. Any families that do not receive a resource bag but are interested in participating in “Summer STEM Adventure! can access the activity sheets, book list and extension activities at www.witf.org/stem.

WITF President and CEO Ron Hetrick helps to assemble the 3,000 resource bags for the “Summer STEM Adventure! program.

pandemic adding urgency to the cause. Children’s hospitals and their systems are actively working to develop COVID-19 treatments and vaccines. At the same time, investments in telehealth service, personal protective equipment and coronavirus testing supplies have escalated hospitals’ expenses while the suspension of elective surgeries and routine procedures is costing hospitals revenue and impacting children in need of care. The Rite Aid Foundation will also direct funds raised through KidCents, its customer-generated charitable giving program dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children living in communities Rite Aid serves, through the duration of the campaign. In April, the foundation also issued a special $250,000 grant to CMN Hospitals to address immediate needs related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Lancaster Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently offered humanitarian aid during the COVID-19 pandemic in three different ways. The effort utilized the centralized structure of the church, which has headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah, and local wards or congregations that are aware of needs in their own communities. The first effort was born of a request to Stan Walters, the Pennsylvania Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) director and a member of the Shrewsbury Ward, from Shen Kreiser at York County’s Office of Emergency Management requesting more hygiene kits for quarantine housing for persons experiencing homelessness. A pallet of 500 kits was sent from Salt Lake City on May 7. The rest will be used statewide by Pennsylvania VOAD. Then on May 14 food donations of $500 each were delivered from the Bishops’

Storehouse in Baltimore, Md., to the York Food Bank, Lancaster County Food Hub, and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries from church funds managed by the Stake Communication Council. A shipment of 40,000 pounds of food from Salt Lake City arrived at the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank in Harrisburg on May 20. Local leaders chose this particular food bank because it in turn supplies more than 1,000 food assistance programs in 27 counties. According to the church, 15 truckloads of commodities from its network of bishop’s storehouses are being delivered to food banks and other charitable organizations weekly across the country. Harrisburg Stake president Rhett Hintze serves as the senior leader of the church in the Harrisburg area.

Kavrina Kelly (left), on-site coordinator for Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, recently received a truckload of food from Rhett Hintze, president of the Harrisburg Stake (diocese) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Vacation Bible School Planned The churches of the Mountville Ministerium are sponsoring Compassion Camp, an online vacation Bible school, through Monday, Aug. 10, for children age 4 through sixth grade.
