Labor Day Auction To Feature Tools And Much More By Dayna M. Reidenouer
As Hospice & Community Care (HCC) donor relations manager Coco Minardi reviewed the items pulled for a photo to advertise the 35th annual Labor Day Auction set for Saturday, Aug. 31, and Monday, Sept. 2, she laughed. “An autographed football, a life-size NASCAR poster, a quilt, and a mailbox: That’s the randomness of the auction right there.” Indeed, at first glance it might seem like the epic two-day sale is full of a jumble of items every year, but it is all very deliberate. The things that have been donated to the auction are grouped by type, such as plants, quilts, sports memorabilia, used cars, and artwork. This year, the event will feature a tool auction for the first time.
“We work with the Amish community, and they do all of our food, which brought in $80,000 last year, but not many Amish people attend the auction,” Minardi explained. In an effort to appeal to more Amish folks, the auction committee asked for advice, and “add tools” was the resounding response. “We called local construction companies, and hospice families have been cleaning out their sheds,” Minardi said. Decommissioned commercial-grade tools and equipment, as well as household tools, have been donated for the auction, and they will be sold to the highest bidders on Aug. 31 from 9 a.m. to noon in the second half of the plant building. “We’re hoping we strike a chord with people who are do-it-yourselfers or Amish,” Minardi remarked. “It’s a dog festival, (but) humans are (allowed) to attend,” said Joanne Pursel, who chairs Paws in the Park along with Sandy Jones. “It’s a fun time for everybody.” Paws in the Park, which raises funds for Leo’s Helping Paws, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Lititz Springs Park, 24 N. Broad St., Lititz, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registered dogs of all breeds and sizes will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of contests. Organizers hope to hold the popular canine costume contest, which has brought dogs to the event in costumes both homemade and storebought. Other games and contests organizers hope to hold will include musical hoops, a dog treat relay, a shell game, a tennis ball retrieval competition, and dog limbo. Paw painting will be available for an additional fee. The Lancaster City Police K-9 Unit is expected to return for a demonstration during the event, and at least 12 rescue groups will be in attendance with dogs for people to meet and consider for adoption at a later time. In addition, a vendor fair will be held. The vendor fair will feature a pet photographer, several vet offices, dog day care and boarding facilities, and on-site nail trims for a cost. One vendor will sell clothing for dogs, and another will sell dog treats. A silent auction will feature up to 25 items, including gift cards and gift baskets. Food trucks that will be on-site at the park will offer hamburgers, chicken fingers, hot dogs, and beef jerky for purchase. A cupcake truck will be on-site as well. According to Pursel, more than 500
people attended the 2018 event. She added that the event welcomes well-mannered dogs on non-retractable leashes no longer than six feet. Vaccination certifications should be brought along with the dog. Leo’s Helping Paws was founded by Kathy Styer and Beth Buchter, who set a specific goal when they created the organization: to provide grants to rescue groups. To be eligible for grants, rescue organizations must be 501(c)(3) nonprofits with no paid staff. In addition to helping rescues, Leo’s has a pet food and supply bank that accepts food, treats, blankets, towels, and anything else a rescue could use. Leo’s is named after a now-11-year-old corgi that was rescued from a local breeding facility at the age of 11 months. Pursel said she would love to see this year’s event raise more than $10,000 for Leo’s Helping Paws. Preregistration for the event is available at http://leoshelpingpaws.org through Sunday, Sept. 1. Participants may also register at the park on the day of the event. There is a cost to take part. Readers who would like more information about the event may email goldenpuppy2016@yahoo.com.

Ruhl’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, will host its 19th annual God’s Clothing Closet from 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24. The community is invited to shop for free quality used clothing, footwear, and accessories for men, women, and children. Items will be available in all sizes and for all seasons. Organizer Kris Gray noted that the clothing is organized by size and displayed on racks and tables for ease of shopping. The facility is air-conditioned and handicapped-accessible, with plenty of parking available. A limited number of shopping bags will be available, so shoppers may want to bring their own. According to Gray, 568 people attended the 2018 God’s Clothing Closet event, making it the highest attendance on record. Before the doors opened, the waiting line extended past the Prayer Garden located beside the church parking lot. More than 500 hours of volunteer time at the church went into the event, Gray said, plus countless hours spent gathering, laundering, and mending clothing and preparing food for the day. Attendees are encouraged but not required to bring donations of nonperishable food items or toiletries for the Manheim
Central Food Pantry. Current needs at the food pantry include canned vegetables, jelly, saltines and other crackers, canned fruit, canned tuna and chicken, and Spam. Last year, five boxes of food were donated to the food pantry thanks to shoppers. The God’s Clothing Closet event will also have free Bibles and devotional materials available for adults and children. A limited number of quilts handmade by Ruhl’s church members will also be available for new mothers, and free on-site child care will be provided. Once folks are finished shopping, they are welcome to relax and enjoy musical entertainment, light refreshments, and a game room in an area separate from the clothing setup.

Labor Day Auction from pg 1 The Labor Day Auction started in Lampeter, but four years ago, the event moved to the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville, where it has flourished. The site offers ample free parking, and there is team parking at the venue as well. Golf carts will be available to shuttle people to and from their cars as needed. Minardi reported that the first auction more than three decades ago raised $1,300, and the advertising material was not even the size of a half-sheet of letter paper. Last year’s event brought in $760,000. “We can’t fit all (of the details) on anything smaller than eight pages,” she marveled. The fairgrounds will open at 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2 so visitors may register for bidder numbers, purchase their all-you-
can-eat food passes, and preview the items. The food tents will open on Aug. 31 at 9 a.m. and will feature omelets and sticky buns for breakfast and pork barbecue for lunch. Breakfast logs - those culinary delights of bacon or sausage, scrambled eggs, and cheese baked in a buttery soft pretzel crust will be available when the food tents open at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 2. Minardi noted that an HCC volunteer is known to bring a cooler to the sale so she can buy two dozen breakfast logs to take home, freeze, and enjoy later. Sept. 2 will also feature barbecued chicken and ribs, as well as doughnuts made on-site. The food offerings on both days will include fried shrimp, a salad bar, fresh fruit, smoothies, chocolate milk, and more. Minardi and the auction committee are

still accepting donations for the auction. They are especially looking for used cars and quilts. A number of unique items have already been donated. Of special note are Ty Cobb baseball cards from 1909 and 1911. The collectors’ items will be sold on Sept. 2 at noon in the sports building. An Amish buggy will be up for bids, as well as sheds, a gazebo, and vacation stays for large groups of people. Recommendations of delivery services for the structures will be provided. For folks who would like to contribute to HCC without taking things home, the Day of Care Auction, which is sponsored by Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc., will be held at noon both days. Television personalities Corinne Lillis and Anne Shannon will host the auctions, during which attendees may virtually purchase days of care for hospice clients. The average daily cost of providing hospice care for one person is
$187, Minardi said. The proceeds from the Labor Day Auction will go directly to HCC’s programs. The nonprofit organization has operations in Lancaster and York counties and provides palliative care, bereavement help, chaplain and auxiliary services, individual and group counseling, physical and online resource libraries, and more. In 2018, HCC served more than 15,000 families. Minardi noted that HCC serves more than 60 percent of the people who die in Lancaster County and a quarter of the deceased in York County. HCC also offers services for people who have experienced tragic loss, including the death of pets. To donate items for the auction, readers may contact special events coordinator Devon Fiore at 717-391-2434 or dfiore@ hospicecommunity.org. For more information about the event, folks may visit www.LaborDayAuction.org.
will be paired up. The day will include lunch, a barbecue dinner and contests on the course. Sponsorships for tables, golf carts, holes and pin flags remain available. Proceeds will benefit the school’s student technology programs. For more information or to register, readers may call 717-3923083 or dwalker@rcspa.org.

Grace Julian co-founded The Edible Classroom as a nonprofit organization in 2018 in an effort to teach more students about growing their own food and to partner with schools to create and sustain learning gardens and customized programs. Camp mornings kicked off with “Garden Yoga” as campers practiced stretching into poses, followed by plenty of time in the garden exploring and tending the plants. Each day featured a gardenrelated topic with a read-aloud story and activities, games, and crafts. “We were talking about pests and beneficials,” said Jameer, one of the campers. “And we talked about how you should not kill pollinators like bees and butterflies because they carry the pollen to the seed.” Plus, campers got the chance to harvest fresh items to prepare food to try like salsa, carrot cake pancakes, sautéed potatoes, and

potato salad. “I’m just thrilled that these kids got to experience this, because many of them don’t have gardens or yards at home,” shared Horst. Some of the other summer offerings by The Edible Classroom included garden camps and enrichment programs at Park Elementary School in Columbia Borough School District, Brecht Elementary School in Manheim Township School District, Conestoga Elementary School in Penn Manor School District, Manor Township Playground in the Parks, Teen Central in Manheim, Wee Care Day School in East Petersburg, and Power Scholars Academy offered through SDoL and the Lancaster Family YMCA. Julian noted that in the fall and spring The Edible Classroom helps schools throughout the county with planning curriculum-based garden lessons: “All of
which teach them how to plant, tend, harvest, and enjoy the fruits of their labor,” she explained. On Saturday, Sept. 21, The Edible Classroom will host its second annual Watermelon Blaster 5K and Kids’ Fun Run for the community at 8:30 a.m. at Manor Middle School, 2950 Charlestown Road, Lancaster. All participants will receive a watermelon blaster: a favorite smoothie recipe of The Edible Classroom’s founders that combines fresh and frozen watermelon with a splash of lime. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in three age categories. To register in advance, readers may visit www.theedibleclassroom.org/5k -registration. 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, at Manor Middle School. Event-day registration and packet pickup will open at 7 a.m. The Kids’ Fun Run, free and open to children age 12 and younger, will begin at approximately 9:30 a.m. Other festivities on race day will include live music by Dreadnought Brigade and a watermelon seed spitting contest for children and adults, where the winners will receive watermelons. A portion of every Watermelon Blaster registration fee will go into a School Garden Grant fund. Grants will be awarded to three schools to use toward The Edible Classroom’s programming to establish or sustain a school garden in the 2019-20 academic year. A silent auction will be held during the event to raise funds for the Hempfield field hockey program. Bids will be accepted for a vacation getaway, theater tickets, jewelry, restaurant gift cards, massage and golfing packages, cosmetic gift baskets, USA Field Hockey Olympic memorabilia, and more. Additionally, the field hockey booster club is producing a program booklet that will include business sponsorships. “We’ve had tremendous support from
local businesses,” said booster president Dana Herr. Sponsors will be recognized throughout the season, beginning with the kickoff event. Businesses that would like to be included in the booklet have until Monday, Aug. 19, to contact Herr at dana_herr@ml.com or 717-314-6653. The field hockey preseason began on Aug. 12, with twice-daily practices. The varsity and JV teams are preparing to play their season opener at home against Exeter Township Senior High School on Friday, Aug. 30. The varsity game will start at 10 a.m., and the JV game will begin at 11:15 a.m. “Last year, we had a student section (at our games) for the first time,” said senior Alexa Pitts. “It’s nice having student support.” Alexa and her teammate, Brooke Gaenzle, also a senior, appreciate the support of the greater community as well. “I like how a bunch of people come out (for Meet the Team),” Brooke remarked. “It’s good for the team: It makes us feel like we’re a good team.” “Meet the Team builds morale,” Alexa added. “It gets me hyped for the season.” The athletes noted that last year’s season did not finish the way they would have liked, with weather negatively impacting several games. Additionally, last year’s team had a lot of seniors and freshmen, and most of the starting team graduated. “We will have to rely on the sophomores,” Alexa said. “We have some good freshmen,” Brooke added. Alexa and Brooke suggested that this year’s personality dynamics are setting up the athletes to play well as a team. “As a parent (of a team member), it seems like there’s more cohesiveness this year,” Herr commented. “Coach (Tesla Atkins Miller) is offering opportunities for team
development on and off the field, and the booster club supports her efforts.” Brooke and Alexa have been impressed by Miller, who became the head coach during their sophomore year. “We have had a lot of coach changes, but Tesla is passionate about the sport and really wants to help us,” Alexa said. “She has clinics for younger kids,” Brooke added, noting that she has been encouraged that Miller is planning for the future of the field hockey program in the Hempfield School District. Meet the Team night has been shortened
this year due to the football game that will be played at home later that evening. Herr expressed a hope that folks will drop by the field hockey event before they head to the stadium for the game. For more information about Meet the Team night, readers may contact Herr at the aforementioned number and email address, or they may email booster club members Wilay Boensch at wilay boensch@yahoo.com, Marisa Pitts at hhs fieldhockey1@gmail.com, Stacy Wenzel at wenzel2513@comcast.net, or Doug Kesser at dnakesser@gmail.com.

Moms In Prayer Will Kick Off Year
s 20 Inn 2019-20

Moms in Prayer International will soon kick off another season of praying for children and schools. In Lancaster County, many groups will meet weekly. Moms in Prayer is a worldwide group of praying mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and other women. In addition to a traditional/one-school Moms in Prayer group, there are also church-based, homeschool, preschool, special-needs, prodigal, military, college, career, language-based, grandmothers’ and working mothers’ groups, as well as a growing prison ministry. Founded in 1984, Moms in Prayer International has one goal: to impact children and schools for Christ by gathering mothers to pray. Mothers in more than 140 countries around the world meet regularly, spending an hour praying through the four steps of prayer: praising God for who He is, silently confessing any sins, thanking God for what He has done, and interceding on behalf of children, teachers, and school staff members. Additionally, Moms in Prayer will hold Bless Our School Sunday on Sept. 15. On this date, churches around the world will pray for the students, teachers, and school staff members in their congregations. For more information about Moms in Prayer International, to find a group, or more information about Bless Our Schools Sunday, readers may visit www.momsin prayer.org. Individuals can locate a group through the Moms in Prayer website by selecting Get Involved, or they may contact Sue Forry at 4stepsofprayer@gmail.com.
