TCenter holds Schreiber Summer Olympics
he Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development held the Schreiber Summer Olympics from July 22 to Aug. 2. Kids in speech, occupational, and physical therapies participated in traditional Olympic activities with a twist. From field hockey, tennis, badminton, and cycling to judo, boxing, and basketball, each special event was tailored for the Schreiber Center kids. Taking advantage of the additional space from the center’s recent expansion, children participated in activities outside in the new therapy garden and on the playground, as well as indoors in the new private therapy treatment rooms, specialized occupational and physical therapy gyms, and speech therapy suite.
Indoors, children practiced their fine motor and speech skills with Olympic-themed matching games, sensory bins, and worksheets. Outside, kids finetuned their coordination with equestrian hurdles and worked
An effort to aid veterans
A group of Lancaster County veterans, a national veterans’ organization, and a local furniture and furnishings store recently came together to purchase new bedding - including mattresses, foundations, bedsheets, pillows, and other supplies - for the Lancaster Barracks, a group home for veterans participating in the Lancaster County Veterans Treatment Court.
Funds to purchase the six mattresses and accompanying supplies were donated by the Lancaster Pennsylvania Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), which

Kids love to discover. Kids love to be independent. Kids love to think.
Kids love Sky Bridge.
The High Foundation Sky Bridge, designed and fabricated by Luckey Climbers, is the Lancaster Science Factory’s latest hands-on exhibit for young learners. It represents the best kind of ingenuity, the kind that inspires
others to be creative.
“More than learning, it’s about inspiring children,” said Amanda Bakay, the Lancaster Science Factory’s director of programs and communications. “When they see it and get inside of it, they start to realize they could create something like this one day. It sparks an idea like, ‘What did someone have to do to think this thing up?’”

Chiques Creek Stomp will combine hands-on fun with environmental education
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Dolores
When it’s hot, hot, hot outside, there’s no better way to cool down than splashing in the creek. On Monday, Aug. 19, you can embrace the water’s chilliness while also learning about the environment at the Chiques Creek Stomp. The event will be held in Little Chiques Park, 229 Park Ave., Mount Joy, from 6 to 7 p.m.
Participants at a previous year’s creek stomp investigate what’s in the water.
Faith United Methodist Church (UMC), 1290 Fruitville Pike, Lititz, will host a takeout spaghetti dinner on Sunday, Aug. 18, with pickup from 5 to 7 p.m. The entrance to the driveway is on Koser Road.
“The creek stomp will provide the opportunity for participants to get in the stream and collect samples of the aquatic wildlife,” explained Tim Elder, treasurer of the Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance, which hosts the activity. “Representatives of the Lancaster County Conservation District will be on hand to identify what is collected and help explain how the types of aquatic life living in the stream provides an indication of the health of the stream.”
While the creek stomp is fun for the whole family, it serves a bigger role than just entertainment, Elder said. “The purpose of the event is to educate people on the importance of keeping our streams clean to protect wildlife in the stream,” he shared.
The Chiques Creek
Watershed Alliance is a volunteer-run organization with a mission to promote good stewardship of the land within the Chiques Creek Watershed in order to protect and preserve the Chiques Creek for the present community and future generations. The Chiques Creek Watershed covers approximately 126 square miles of area, almost all of which is in Lancaster County. Beginning in Lebanon County, the Chiques Creek flows 31 miles to its confluence with the Susquehanna River near Marietta Borough. Six townships - East Hempfield, Mount Joy, Penn, Rapho, West Cornwall and West Hempfield - as well as two boroughs - Manheim and Mount Joy - have areas contained within the watershed. In addition to the creek stomp, the organization holds other community events and works with a variety of local
organizations to promote environmental initiatives.
Meetings are held at the Penn Township municipal building, 97 N. Penryn Road, Manheim, at 6 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month.
There is no charge for the creek stomp, and no reservations are required.
Participants should wear old shoes and clothes that they don’t mind getting wet and dirty.
For more information on Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance, visit www.chique screekwatershed.com.
The meal will consist of spaghetti with meat sauce, a salad, bread, and a sweet treat. A gluten-free option and a meatless sauce option will be available.
Preorders by Friday, Aug. 16, are encouraged and can be placed by calling the church office at 717-560-0321 or emailing FaithUMC@ hotmail.com. The food is available by donation either when meals are picked up or in advance at www.FaithUMC.us under “Online Giving.” All donations support the ministries of the church.
received a $2,500 grant from the national organization. The local chapter provided a separate $1,000 contribution to supplement the competitive grant. Representatives of the Lancaster MOAA were scheduled to formally present a grant check during Veterans Court on July 11.
The financial donations benefit veterans who are participating in the Lancaster County Veterans Treatment Court, an alternative sentencing program aimed at giving veterans who have committed a crime the opportunity to get their lives back on track.
Fae Skuya, a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel who serves as a volunteer mentor in the treatment program and is a member of the Lancaster Chapter of MOAA, noted that finding a job and affordable housing can be difficult for people with a criminal record. The Lancaster Barracks helps to address housing needs. In addition, comfortable bedding is important in helping the veterans to get quality sleep, increasing the chance of successful completion of their treatment program, said Skuya.
Interiors Home offered mattress sets at a significant discount, allowing the donations to go a long way in replacing bedding that was more than 10 years old.
The Veterans Treatment Court Program saves money for the county when veterans are rehabilitated instead of incarcerated. Since the program started in 2012, 100 veterans graduated from the court program, and the county saved an estimated $1.4 million in jail expenses and recovered an estimated

$300,000 in fines.
Rich Wilson, the volunteer Veterans Court mentor who worked closely with Skuya on the project, says the program welcomes veterans willing to serve as volunteer mentors. These volunteers attend weekly court sessions; keep in touch with their mentee by text, phone, or personal contact; and serve as a supportive presence throughout their journey in the program.
To learn more about volunteer opportunities, contact Rich Wilson at 717-466-0978.
In addition, financial donations are welcomed by the Veterans Court Community Partnership (VCCP), a nonprofit volunteer organization committed to the vision of “Honor, Respect, and Justice for Veterans.” The VCCP provides support for the Lancaster County Veterans Court by raising funds to assist the participating veterans. For information on how to donate, call VCCP treasurer Laurie Moir at 717-575-3599.
Donations of new pillows, single sheets and double sheet sets, blankets, and coverlets are also welcome to replenish the supply at the Barracks and for the veterans to take with them when they graduate from the program and settle into their own apartments and houses.
The Lancaster Chapter MOAA has approximately 160 members who are retired, active, or former officers of the uniformed services. They aid various community projects, work with schools, and have social gatherings throughout the year to facilitate camaraderie. To learn more, go to www .moaalancasterchapt.org.
Avery Landis, a graduating senior from Hempfield High School, received the 2024 scholarship from the Ashara-Casiphia Masonic Lodge 551 in Mount Joy. Each year, Lodge 551 awards a scholarship to a graduating high school student who has shown academic excellence.

Events to explore cultures, music
Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, will host its fourth annual International Fun Day and kick off the 2023-24 Starlight Tea Concert Series on Saturday, Aug. 24. International Fun Day will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the church grounds.
Activities will move indoors if it rains.
Representatives of at least 15 countries and other areas will set up table displays with information, activities, artwork, and food representing their country. Children will receive a passport to be stamped or adorned with stickers at each display they visit. When their passport is filled, they can receive a prize.
Displays are confirmed for Afghanistan, Australia, the Bahamas, Colombia, Denmark, the Dominican Republic, England, Germany, Guatemala, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, and Scotland. Additional countries may be represented, as well. Marie Bachman’s “Our World” quilt, featuring fabrics gathered from around the world, will be on display, along with a detailed notebook that tells its story. Dancers from the Paloma School of Irish Dance will perform at 10:40 a.m.
The United States will be represented by a hot dog lunch and performances by local musician Matt Wheeler at 10 a.m. and noon. The
lunch is free, and donations will be accepted.
Other attractions will include face painting and a bounce house for children with an Eastern Europe and Asia theme. Signs will encourage prayers for peace in parts of the world that are experiencing violence.
Adults may participate in a giveaway drawing for gift baskets created by Dee Zimmerman. The drawings will occur at 12:45 p.m., and entrants must be present to win. Each guest also will receive a chance at one of four cash prizes, which will be awarded at 12:55 p.m.; winners need not be present.
The first event in the Starlight Tea Concert Series will be presented by the chamber chorus Musical Associates at 7 p.m. The concert is titled “Sacred Spaces.” Through music from the 15th century to the present, the concert will explore how people experience different aspects of the sacred in physical, emotional, spiritual, and musical spaces.
Emery DeWitt, who founded the summer chamber chorus in 2003 and directed it since its beginning, has handed the reins to new artistic director Jon Clemens. Clemens has participated with various musical organizations in the Lancaster community, including being a founding member of Musical Associates. With graduate degrees in music composition and theory, he currently is board president of Allegro Lancaster. Musical Associates is now an Allegro Lancaster ensemble.
Additional concerts will take place on select Saturdays, unless otherwise noted. Dates and performers or events will include Sept. 21, Rizzetta’s Tones; Oct. 26, Maria Corley and Christyan Seay; Nov. 23, Silver, Wood, & Ivory; Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 4 and 5, 2025, Epiphany concerts featuring the Lancaster COB choirs; March 22, Two Rivers Chamber Music String Quartet; April 5, Elizabethtown College Student Showcase; and May 10, jazz pianists Stephanie Trick and Paolo Alderighi. Tea and cookies will be served following each concert. Admission is free, and an offering will be received. For more information, contact planning committee chair Giny Mackey at 717-201-8450.
Event at pool to feature yoga, aerialist, and more
A “Stretch Out the Summer” event will take place at Mountville Pool, 350 W. Main St., Mountville, on Tuesday, Aug. 20, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Bumbling Circus Workshop will present the event, and proceeds will benefit SwimAmerica scholarships for local youths.
The event will commence with a vinyasa-style yoga class led by Deb Leschke, a teacher from Unique Physique in York and a pool regular. Katie Stewart, aerialist and owner of The Inversion Co., will give a poolside aerial silks performance and will be available to answer questions. With the help of volunteer celebrity lifeguards, the pool will be open for swimming throughout the event. Video highlight reels will be shown, recapping this season’s pool and yoga fun. The snack bar will remain open until 9 p.m., and guests are reminded that smoking, alcohol, and glass containers of any kind are not permitted at the pool. The final activity of the event will be a gentle restorative yoga class led by Albert “Stormy” Storm, a lifeguard and swim teacher at the pool. The event will also include prize giveaways.
This event is a collaborative effort headed up by coach Connor Rugenstein, manager of Mountville
Pool, and Storm. Rugenstein, an educator, has been involved at the pool since the age of 14, including swimming, coaching, and working. Storm, a local entrepreneur and retired Army veteran, operates the Bumbling Circus Workshop, through which he teaches yoga and aerial yoga and pursues a variety of artistic endeavors.
The event is free of charge for pool pass holders, with a fee for all others. Donations are welcome.
Funds raised from this event will benefit swim lessons for children from the local area. Vouchers for lessons with SwimAmerica will be made available to principals of local elementary schools to reward children who demonstrate good behavior. An effort will be made to direct these funds to students who might not otherwise be able to afford lessons.
For more details, email bumblingcircuswork shop@gmail.com.
The Mountville Pool, located at Froelich Park, was constructed beginning in 1985 and opened to the public in the summer of 1989. Following a shutdown during the pandemic, the pool reopened. The 2024 season marks the 35th anniversary of the pool.
“Stretch Out the Summer” will offer yoga and more on Aug. 20.

project, part gateway to higher learning, Sky Bridge opened to rave reviews at Lancaster Science Factory, 454 New Holland Ave., Lancaster, in April of 2023.
The $600,000 project was fabricated by construction artist and designer Spencer Luckey in his New England shop and then assembled at the Lancaster Science Factory over a three-week span.
“Sometimes kids like to see how quickly they can get to the top,” said Bakay. “It kind of looks like a giant ant farm when it’s filled with children. Sometimes kids will climb to the highest point and hang out. It’s almost like a cool clubhouse.”
When visitors to Lancaster Science Factory round the corner from the main entrance, they are confronted with Sky Bridge, which is attached to beams on the high ceiling of the former manufacturing plant. But the massive structure does not make contact with the ground.
“We’ve always wanted to use our horizontal space, to have a bridge span over our main exhibit hall,” said Bakay. “It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before, just because you can climb in it. It’s so accessible, and having a bird’s-eye view of the exhibit hall is so cool.”
Framed by metal and held together by thick wire netting, Sky Bridge is a series of 35 wooden panels strategically spaced throughout the structure. Sky Bridge both stands out and fits right in with the Lancaster Science Factory’s 75 other exhibits.
“Everything we do is very hands-on and interactive,” said Bakay. “Everything we have requires you to do some -

thing and try something in a different way. Sky Bridge is like our other exhibits because it’s immersive, but there’s no beginning, middle or end. We also really don’t have anything else you can get inside and climb on.”
During 2023, nearly 71,000 individuals visited the Lancaster Science Factory, about 11,000 more than officials had projected. When those officials searched for reasons for the increase, they looked to Sky Bridge.
“It’s made a huge impact on our visitation,” said Bakay. “(The increase) was all, or in part, because of Sky Bridge. It gave us something to talk about.”
Partly through the funding of a $1 million capital campaign, the Lancaster Science Factory, which boasts 17,000 square feet of exhibit space, opened in 2008.
“Our mission is to inspire creativity in children through science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs and keep them accessible to everyone in the community,” said Bakay. “We want the facility to stay open to everyone in our community. We’ve really grown from this small science factory to a regional destination.”

End of Summer Band Jam will benefit Susquehanna Stage
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
It takes a village to support the work of Susquehanna Stage, and events committee member Joni McCrady is hoping members of that village turn out for a special event happening later this month.
The End of Summer Band Jam will be held from 4 to 10 p.m. on the gallery stage at Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, on Saturday, Aug. 24. Performers at the fundraiser will be Ian Aston and the Missing Peace, Tuesday Rains and Out of Nowhere.
Along with live music, the party will feature two food trucks located on Market Street in front of the theater, as well as drinks and desserts on sale in the concession area.
There is a charge for tickets, and proceeds from the event will benefit the community theater. “The theater is growing, and many updates are necessary to accommodate the growth to service our community,” McGrady shared. “We have plans to update the facilities, accommodate all through ADA compliance and improve sight lines in the theater on our mainstage.”
This is the fourth year a live music event has supported Susquehanna Stage, McGrady said. “We felt before school starts
up again, it would be fun to have an opportunity to bring people into the theater,” she stated. “Come out and enjoy a night of live music, drinks, dancing and local food trucks. Spend some time with community members from all over the central PA area, and celebrate the end of summer. … (It’s) a great event for the whole family to enjoy.”
Susquehanna Stage hosts theater experiences throughout the year, and McGrady said events such as the End of Summer Band Jam help raise awareness of the nonprofit.
“We continue to be amazed at the number of local residents who are unaware of the tremendous talent showcased at our theater,” she commented. “We open our theater with shows, cabarets, events and educational opportunities for adults and children.”
Upcoming Susquehanna Stage productions include Stephen Sondheim’s “Assassins” in October and Jon Robin Baitz’s play “Other Desert Cities” in December.
Tickets for the End of Summer Band Jam are available to purchase in advance at www.susque hannastage.com or may be purchased at the door. The event is open to people of all ages, but children under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
