Third Time’s The Charm For Mah Jongg Madness By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Natalie Freedman and her friends, the Mah Jongg Mavens, meet regularly to play the tile game that originated in China. Success is based on a combination of luck and skill. “What I’ve learned about this game is thinking does not determine a win,” said Mavens member Gwyn Harner. That is not to say that strategy is not important. “Natalie plays defense really well,” Harner commented. “She rarely gives away a win.” While Natalie might not be generous when it comes to mah jongg, she uses the game as a tool for generosity. Natalie is the hostess of the annual Mah Jongg Madness, a fundraising event for the Edward Freedman Congregational Retreat held biennially by Congregation Shaarai Shomayim. The
proceeds from the two afternoons spent playing mah jongg helped to offset the cost of this year’s retreat, making it possible for 41 families totaling 108 people to attend. “We had the most we’ve ever had (at the retreat),” Natalie reported. “Everybody had such a good time this year. The rabbi was overwhelmed by the turnout.” The retreat is an important part of congregational life, Natalie said, explaining, “It’s important because it brings everybody together spiritually. There are activities planned for the kids, and the adults have fun and read the Torah.” Edward and Natalie were together for 12 years before he died in 2010. He was a dentist for 54 years and was a beloved figure in Lancaster. “He was kind and caring,” Natalie related. “This legacy he left, I’m trying to continue.” See Mah Jongg Madness pg 2

MoneyMakers Investment Club senior partner Chris Milsom (left) and member Sandy Bruce invite anyone interested in learning about investing in stocks to consider joining the club.
Dividends, NYSE, NASDAQ, growth stock, day trading - for some folks, these words are as incomprehensible as thermonuclear astrophysics. The members of the MoneyMakers Investment Club, however, are committed to working together to demystify the stock market and the process of investing in stocks. “The purpose of the club is mostly education, to get comfortable with basics and concepts of investing and have a little fun while we’re doing it,” explained senior partner Chris Milsom. “We were spurred on by the Beardstown Ladies club,” she added, referencing “The Beardstown Ladies’ Common-Sense Investment Guide: How We Beat the See MoneyMakers Club pg 3
Three Churches To Collaborate On Night Of Worship “Community” is sometimes defined as “common unity.” Three area churches, although they differ in denomination, have found community through their shared love of worshipping God. On May 3, Millersville Brethren in Christ (BIC) Church, East Petersburg Mennonite Church, and Sanctuary, a Vineyard Church, held their first collaborative worship night at Sanctuary. More than 100 people participated. The next collaborative night of worship will be held at East Petersburg Mennonite Church, 6279 Main St., East Petersburg, at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30. The worship team will be composed of musicians from each of the three churches. Members of the public are invited to attend the event, where they will be encouraged to focus on worship for, to, and because of God. See Collaborative Worship pg 5

provide sound investment information, education, and support that helps to create successful lifetime investors. The MoneyMakers group relies on resources produced by BetterInvesting to train its members. The Stock Selection Guide is invaluable, Milsom and Bruce agreed. The organization also offers conferences and webinars, and www.betterinvesting.org hosts a wealth of resources used by the MoneyMakers to manage the group’s portfolio. There is a fee to join the MoneyMakers, and members contribute an amount of money at each meeting to purchase stocks. Dividends are reinvested, or they are used to pay for the cost of accessing BetterInvesting’s online resources. “Because I’m in this club, I was brave enough to go out and buy my own stocks,” Bruce commented. “Even if you use a stockbroker, it’s good to have some knowledge of what’s going on.” The next meeting of the Money Makers will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 11. Interested individuals are welcome to attend. Milsom requested that readers send an email to moneymakers.invest mentclub@gmail.com to let the club know they plan to attend.

meeting, club members discuss the group’s current portfolio and consider other stocks. Each member follows at least one stock for a year, reporting on its progress periodically. “The goal is to get each person to have a comfortable level with their own investing,” Milsom said. “We want them to be able to make better decisions about their financial future.” “Most of our stocks have done well,” said club member Sandy Bruce. “Occasionally you get a bad egg.” “We try to keep an ear on the ground,” Milsom added. The MoneyMakers have done so well lately that the club anticipates receiving an award from the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of BetterInvesting. The chapter serves individual and investment club members of BetterInvesting by providing educational investing workshops, model investment club meetings, and other events for stock investors of all skill levels. Stock Market - And How You Can Too,” which was published in 1995. “Widows, finding themselves in charge of their financial future, formed an investment club, and they did so well that they spawned this whole movement of women’s investment clubs,” Milsom continued. Membership in the MoneyMakers Investment Club is not restricted to women only. While an audit eventually showed that the Beardstown Ladies’ investments were not performing as well as initially advertised, the principle remained the same: Laypeople could teach themselves how to invest and manage stocks wisely. In 1997, Milsom was part of the creation of Bring Your Own Chair (BYOC), an investment group that met in different places, so attendees were encouraged to provide their own seats. BYOC merged with the MoneyMakers group in 2003 and opted to keep that name. The MoneyMakers group meets on the second Wednesday of almost every month at 7 p.m. at the Lancaster Friends Meetinghouse, 110 Tulane Terrace, Lancaster. The club usually does not meet in July, and the December meeting is a social event held at a local restaurant. During each

Collaborative Worship from pg 1 “The purpose that we’re trying to accomplish in this is in keeping with Hebrews 13, where it says, ‘Come, offer a sacrifice of praise to the Lord,’” Sanctuary pastor Rip Wahlberg explained in a video about the event. “What we’re trying to do is just come and worship God together as one people of God, with no other agenda, no other self-seeking motive, just to bless the heart of God.” “When I think about these events, my mind goes to Psalm 133:1, which tells us how good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity,” added Millersville BIC pastor Chris Freet. “Just thinking
about three churches from three denominations coming together to worship God and bless His heart, who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?” The third collaborative night of worship will be held on Friday, Oct. 25, at Millersville BIC, 3116 Blue Rock Road, Millersville. For more information about the collaborative night of worship on Aug. 30, readers may email eastpetemc@gmail.com. Giant Pilots Enhanced Rewards Program Giant Food Stores has announced it is piloting a new way for its customers to increase their savings through personalized offers on products they already buy with the new Choice Rewards program. An enhancement to its current Gas Extra Rewards program, Choice Rewards brings customized savings and rewards to customers via the Giant or Martin’s app. By leveraging smartphone technology, Giant aims to provide relevant rewards to their participating customers. Choice Rewards is now available in a select pilot market, and it will roll out by the end of the year. Just like they do in Giant’s current program, customers participating in the pilot earn points on qualifying purchases at the rate of one point for every $1 spent. New through Choice Rewards, they will also be able to earn points through targeted
“bonus earn” offers. When it comes time to redeem points, customers can either redeem their points for discounts on gas - with 100 points equaling a $0.10 discount per gallon up to 25 gallons - or choose among new offers such as converting points to dollars to save directly on groceries. In addition to viewing their personalized offers and rewards earnings on the app, customers can load digital coupons, activate Deli Order Ahead, or place a grocery order with Giant Direct. In the app, customers can track their earning progress while managing their points and rewards. Points earned expire on the last day of the month following the month in which they were earned. For more information about Giant or Martin’s, readers may visit the https://giantfoodstores.com or https://martinsfoods.com.
Tournament from pg 1 HOPE International Schedules Annual Golf Outing By Ann Mead Ash
Tucked away in an office building in the heart of Lancaster County is a nonprofit organization that seeks to alleviate poverty in all its forms, including spiritual, material, social, and personal. Working toward that end, in 22 years, the organization has loaned out $1.3 billion to 950,000 clients in 16 countries. While those figures are impressive, Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, prefers to talk about the people the organization has helped. “It’s not about the numbers, it’s about guys like Nico,” said Rutt, referring to a rice farmer Rutt met in the Philippines during late 2018 and early 2019. Nico, who lives on the island of Tacloban, has a dream of sending his sons to college. When
his fishing business was wiped out in a 2013 typhoon that hit Tacloban and killed 7,000, Nico learned how to grow rice. “(Nico) got involved in a HOPE International savings group there, (participating in a) welcome, worship, Word, work, and wrap up group program,” explained Rutt. “He is just thriving.” Rutt asked Nico if he had advice for other farmers. “He said three things: ‘Trust God, work hard, and save,’” recalled Rutt. Rutt is offering area residents and businesses a chance to help more people like Nico by sponsoring and registering to attend the organization’s 19th annual golf tournament at Heritage Hills Golf Resort, 2700 Mount Rose Ave., York, on Friday, Sept. 13. Round one of the four-person scrambleformat tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 7 a.m. Round two will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Morning golfers will receive a continental breakfast and

attend the awards luncheon, and afternoon participants will receive a boxed lunch and attend the awards dinner. According to Brian Boycan, regional representative with HOPE, the tournament can comfortably accommodate a total of 230 golfers. Boycan explained that HOPE will reach even more countries by entering a partnership with Compassion International to train representatives in savings group programs. This year, HOPE will train Compassion staff members in Rwanda, Thailand, Kenya, Indonesia, and Tanzania. “We want to make a big difference. We want to collaborate for the kingdom,” explained Boycan. Rutt noted that it is important to train those who are indigenous to an area to oversee savings groups. He shared the story of Rosalie, a woman in the Philippines who was asked by a HOPE representative about her dreams. “She said she would love a house, but it is too big a dream,” relayed Rutt. “The indigenous leader, Florine, talked to her about big dreams and small steps toward them.” Rutt explained that the leader can relate to those in the groups in a realistic way. “(Rosalie’s) group leader can say, ‘I grew up here, and I know what you’re going through,’” explained Rutt. Boycan noted that it is the design of the savings groups to give people a way to lift themselves from poverty. “The microfinancing and savings groups restore dignity
and help break the cycle of poverty,” said Boycan. “People feel terrible when they are unable to take care of their families, (but) you see their dignity restored when they realize, ‘I am capable. God has given me the gifts that I need, and I can (take care of my family).’” Last year, HOPE exceeded its goal of raising $350,000 from the tournament. Much of the money raised by the tournament is donated in the form of sponsorships. A variety of sponsorship levels are available to businesses. One package includes a HOPE trip to the Dominican Republic for 12 participants. Currently, the 2019 tournament has raised more than $200,000. Readers who would like to take part in the tournament may visit www.hopeinternational .org/take-action/event-detail/ 19th-annual-golf-tournament. Those who wish to play are asked to register by Saturday, Sept. 7. Individuals who have questions may call 717-464-3220, ext. 456, or email bbeachy@hopeinternational.org.

The National American Legion is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, and the organization has announced the passage of The Legion Act. The U.S. Congress has always set the criteria and eligibility dates for membership in the American Legion. In July, Congress voted on and approved opening up membership to any veteran who served honorably at least one day on active duty since July 7, 1941, to the present or when hostilities cease. It was signed into law on July 30 by President Trump. Local American Legion Post
185, located at 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy, is also celebrating its 100 anniversary this year. It has congratulated two members for recent accomplishments. Member Scott Baker took over the reins as commander of the Sons of the American Legion for the entire state. Legion Rider Matt Neidinger has been named the Pennsylvania American Legion Law Enforcement Officer of the Year, and he was also selected by the national organization to be the Northeast Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. The northeast region includes Connecticut,
Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Also, beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 3, the Mount Joy American Legion will become a smoke-free facility. Post 185 is currently accepting applications for all components of the Legion family - Legionnaires, Riders, Auxiliary, and Sons.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has received a $5,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation to help fight hunger in the Food Bank’s 27-county service area through Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) application assistance. With this grant, the food bank will scale access to SNAP among eligible households, with particular emphasis on reaching seniors. SNAP is a federal nutrition program dedicated to helping millions of people who face hunger. According to the food bank, SNAP improves food security, offers benefits that enable families to purchase healthier foods, and frees up household resources that can be used for preventative services and needed medical care. The food bank says that more than 15 percent of Americans eligible for SNAP currently do not receive this benefit, and seniors are disproportionately affected by food insecurity and barriers to SNAP access. Among seniors, 58% of eligible individuals are not enrolled in SNAP. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s team of SNAP experts provides assistance and helps individuals determine their eligibility for SNAP benefits. Team members are available to assist in the application process through the bilingual Food Stamps Helpline at 877999-5964. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s programs that reach more than 136,000 individuals each month include ElderShare, MilitaryShare, Fresh Express, BackPack, Kids Café, Summer Pantries and Summer Feeding. Last year, the food bank provided nearly 45 million meals and distributed more than 11 million pounds of produce from its locations in Harrisburg and Williamsport. See Food Bank pg 11

The Mount Joy 4-H Community Club recently made a float for a local parade. At the first 4-H meeting of the year, club leader Katina Musser let club members know that a chairperson for the club float committee was needed. A recent transfer to the club, Meghan Becker, decided to take on that role. Meghan is a 16-year-old who, until a few years ago, lived in Dublin, Ireland. This was her first

After sketching a design for the float, Meghan sent a picture to Musser, and thus started the journey of creating the float. As the only member of the committee, Meghan took on most parts of the

leadership process. Her grandfather helped to build parts of the project based on her ideas. Many other members of the club helped as well, including Xavier, who helped with much of the pre-planning, and Jenavieve, who showed up to every work day. The main concept behind the float was to show off different projects that 4-H offers, such as agriculture and woodworking. The concept was well received by the parade audience, and the club hopes to use it in the future at other parades. 4-H is a youth education program of Penn State Extension. It is a nonformal
program for youths between the ages of 8 and 18, and a 4-H Cloverbud Program is also available for youths ages 5 to 8. 4-H extends the knowledge base of the land grant university system to youths to help them develop life skills in citizenship and leadership. For more information on available 4-H clubs and programs, contact the Lancaster Penn State Extension Office at 717394-6851 or LancasterExt@psu.edu.
