Labor Day flea market will return to Landisville
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
The Hempfield recCenter will host the annual Labor Day Flea Market from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 2, at Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville. The outdoor event will be held rain or shine, and it will include local vendors and refreshments available to purchase from food trucks. The proceeds of the flea market will help the rec center sustain various community outreach efforts, including its financial assistance program and partnerships with Hempfield School District.
Vendors will sell items such as antiques, handmade crafts and vintage clothing. The rec center is still accepting vendors for the flea market; interested businesses and community members may call Catherine Hamby at
717-898-3102, ext. 141, to sign up for a space.
Food trucks will include The Eggroll Lady, Bricker’s Famous French Fries, Foltz’s Pretzels, The Donut Guys and a homemade ice cream vendor.
Parking for the event will be available by donation. In previous years, the Hempfield Fire Department partnered with the rec center to assist with parking. This year, parking will be managed by volunteers from Roses Rugby Football Club and the Thorns women’s rugby team. In exchange for volunteers and assistance with parking, the rec center will donate a portion of the event’s proceeds to each organization.
The proceeds from the flea market will benefit the rec center’s Everyone Belongs campaign, which includes various financial assistance programs for members and families in the community.

The Lancaster County Suicide Prevention Coalition will hold its annual conference on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the DoubleTree Resort located at 2400 Willow Street Pike in Lancaster. The event will include a talk from a keynote speaker, breakout sessions and training resources on topics related to mental health and suicide prevention.
Registration will be available online until Saturday, Aug. 31,
Suicide prevention
and it will include a lunch and snacks. To register, visit https://mhalancaster .org/conference.
This year’s keynote speaker is Matt Dorgan, founder and chief executive officer of Building Bridges for Brianna. Dorgan created the organization after the loss of his 15-year-old daughter to suicide in 2020. Building Bridges for Brianna, which is based in York, seeks to prevent suicidal and non-suicidal self-injury throughout local communities and to raise awareness of mental health issues.
Attendees will have an opportunity to participate in various breakout sessions during the conference, and each session will offer information on a specific topic. The sessions will feature discussions on how to use mindfulness to improve student executive functioning, the latest research on suicide prevention and various other mental health-related subjects.
In addition to the key -
note address and breakout sessions, the conference will feature Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) training. QPR functions as the mental health equivalent of CPR, and it serves as a tool to help identify when someone may be struggling with mental health or suicidal thoughts.
“Coming to this event will equip people with a lot of information, and it’s a great opportunity for people who want to become more involved with suicide prevention efforts,” said Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America (MHA) of Lancaster County. “Like our program manager Dave Krahling says, everyone is on the front lines of suicide prevention.”
The Lancaster County Suicide Prevention Coalition has hosted the annual conference for several years, and the schedule has been modified this year to feature more breakout sessions and information about suicide prevention strategies. “Our main goal is to bring stakeholders, educators, consumers and other community members together to gain skills and share the goal of preventing suicides,” McDevitt said.
MHA of Lancaster County has several initiatives that aim to decrease suicide rates in the area, including an upcoming campaign to raise awareness of gun safety. The organization also has several programs slated for September, which is National Suicide Prevention Month.

tickets will benefit various animal advocacy organizations. Each organization will operate a booth at the event to offer information about its mission and receive donations.
Veterinary students will be present at the event to offer services such as nail trimming and ear cleaning for pets for a fee, and Emmett Clay Glass Designs will hold a workshop for attendees to make resin craft jewelry. Proceeds from both the veterinary services and the resin crafts will benefit the participating nonprofits.
The participating nonprofits serve all of Lancaster County and the surrounding area, but two organizations, Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation and Woerth It Hollow, are based in the Southern End. Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation is a Millersville-based organization that specializes in the rehabilitation of squirrels, rabbits, groundhogs and other small woodland creatures. Woerth It Hollow, based in Kirkwood, operates a facility to offer equine therapy services to veterans and people with disabilities in addition to rehabilitating rescued horses. Other participating organizations include Leo’s Helping Paws and Honey’s RAID, which seek to raise awareness of puppy mills, dog fighting and other forms of animal abuse. The groups also raise funds for medical grants for animals that have been abused or abandoned. Other participating rescues will include Greenmore Farm Animal Rescue, Angie’s Stray Foundation, LaMancha Animal Rescue and Wagon Tails Farm Rescue.
“This is my favorite event of the year, and it helps so many organizations,” said Debbie Helm, owner of Britain Hill. “Right now is a cru-
for
heat, so many fosters and rescues are full.”
Helm, who owns rescued dogs herself, created the annual fundraiser four years ago due to her love

Fig Tree grant winners announced
Fig Industries recently announced the recipients of the 2024 Fig Tree grants. The grants represent more than just financial support; they symbolize the company’s commitment to nurturing Lancaster city’s small businesses and entrepreneurs. In collaboration with the Lancaster County Community Foundation, Fig Industries established The Fig Tree in 2023. Thanks to additional support from local businesses and individuals, this year’s grant cycle had $35,000 available for distribution. Through a grant to Lancaster City Alliance, local businesses received $5,000 each to support growth and innovative new ideas.
The Fig Tree 2024 grant recipients are EsōArts,
INGOMA Films, Lancaster Gift Box, PAVAA Gallery, Pham Enterprises, Pocket Books Shop and RichStitch Embroidery.
Grant recipients were chosen by an independent advisory committee composed of seven individuals from across the community. Members of the committee reviewed and scored the responses of all applicants based on their ideas.
Local businesses that invested in The Fig Tree for its first year along with Fig Industries are Work Wisdom, Cargas, and Trout CPA. Several local individuals also contributed.
The next Fig Tree grant cycle will open in March 2025. Find more information and support The Fig Tree at www.lancfound .org/fund/the-fig-tree.

Programs include financial assistance for summer camps, swim lessons and general membership costs. The funds raised by the flea market will also support Hempfield recCenter’s partnerships with Hempfield School District to meet the needs of families and students in the area. During the holidays, the rec center distributes gift cards, toys and clothing to local families that have been identified by the school district, and rec center members assist by making donations. The rec center’s community initiatives also include organizing drives for local food banks.
