Gifts That Give Hope Fair Moves Online Spreading A Pandemic Of Love By Ann Mead Ash

By Ann Mead Ash

A year ago, Jenn Knepper, founder of the Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Lancaster Alternative Gift Fair, was looking forward to moving the fair from its location at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster to The Junction Center in Manheim. This year, Knepper is talking about the online fair that the organization will hold on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. During that time period, those wishing to give an alternative gift may visit www.giftsthatgivehope.org and choose an organization to donate to. “You’re purchasing a gift for somebody, and we will send you a card with a description of the gift you purchased,” said Knepper,

Annette Roland of Music for Everyone (left) and Grace Julian of The Edible Classroom manned their tables at the 2019 Gifts That Give Hope Fair. The 2020 fair will be held as a virtual event on Dec. 5. who added that the fair is the perfect vehicle to find a meaningful gift, especially for those who do not need anything in particular. Looking back at the abrupt changes he dealt with last March when COVID-19 restrictions temporarily closed the state, Spencer Browne, now a rising senior at The Stone School in Lancaster, was philosophical. “When something as shocking as a pandemic happens, there are many different ways to (react),” noted Spencer. “I think it consumes a lot of people and they are stuck in shock about the world being so different they can’t do anything … but we saw it as an opportunity to help people who are in that stasis.” Spencer, along with his family, which consists of his parents, Jen and Sean Browne, and his brother, Jayden, home from college in Minnesota, joined forces with volunteers Michelle Simon

A Way To Honor Your Grandparents

For the past 10 years, Lynda Charles, founder and president of Help The Fight, a breast cancer charity, has spent late summer preparing for the organization’s annual benefit banquet and auction, which is regularly held at Spooky Nook Sports in October. This year has been a bit different. Charles noted that the board of directors carefully considered the implications of hosting the event and decided that the wisest course of action was to suspend the banquet even though its cancellation will have an economic impact on Help The Fight. “We’ve built a good support team over the years, and we just aren’t willing to put anyone in jeopardy,” Charles said. She noted that even though the venue offered extra precautions beyond

the standards required by the CDC, guests with altered immune systems and those undergoing cancer treatment might not feel safe at the event. Additionally, attendance at the event would have been capped at 250, a significant decrease from the 600 people who participated in the 2019 affair. Proceeds from the banquet and auction are used to support individuals living with breast cancer. Help The Fight has provided funds to buy groceries and tires, pay rent and mortgages, and cover day care fees and medical bills. The Internal Revenue Service caps the support at $500 per client per calendar year, but clients may reapply each year. In 2019, Help The Fight assisted nearly 200 individuals. It is on track to aid a similar number of people this year. “The requests are coming just as they have any other year. We like to keep a

Pandemic Of Love from pg 1 the Lancaster chapter of Pandemic of Love. The grassroots, nonprofit organization connects those in need with those who have something to give. It has more than 650 volunteers nationally and, as of late June, had matched nearly 190,000 donors with those in need for $25.1 million in transactions. Pandemic of Love was founded in Florida by Shelly Tyglielski. “She started it for her community,” said Jen, who noted that the

idea spread quickly and soon became a global network. Jen shared the story of the nonprofit’s founding with her family, and by late May, she had contacted Tyglielski through www.pandemicoflove.com. By early June, all the Lancaster volunteers had been trained via an online forum, and the Lancaster County chapter was ready to let the public know of its existence. Jen lauded Spencer and Jayna and their expertise in social media

helpful. One recipient had a service dog that was ill and needed help with vet bills and to purchase special food. When a donor has food to give away, Jen turns to the caterer Scarlet Runner to help distribute it to the recipients. Even as the state has reopened, Jen said that many residents continue to be affected economically for a variety of reasons. “Some people have not been able to go back to work because their employer is not going to reopen, but also a lot of people (have) anxiety (that) is preventing them from going back,” she explained. Because there are only two chapters in the state, Jen and the other volunteers have fielded requests from tiny towns as well as from Philadelphia. They ask donors if they have a preference for keeping donations local. Spencer noted that Pandemic of Love is unusual because it is completely run by volunteers who do not actually handle the donations. “Pandemic of Love has no overhead costs,” he explained. “There’s no money involved in the matching process. People come to us and we document everything.”

for helping to get the word out. “I really credit the young volunteers with making this as successful as it’s been,” said Jen. “They know how to tag the right people. We are fortunate to have young volunteers who know what they’re doing.” Thanks to the volunteers’ hard work, by early July, the Lancaster Chapter had matched 30 donors with recipients. “What was shocking in the beginning is that I had so many donors who were interested,” recalled Jen, noting that at one point she had more donors than people in need. “I was so impressed with that,” she said. Jen explained that Pandemic of Love focuses on putting together the puzzle pieces of donors and recipients. “We look at what someone wants to give and try to connect people who are a good fit for each other,” she said. “So if (someone can’t pay a) bill for $150 and we have someone who has $150 to give, I connect those and then they pay the bill directly.” In addition to utility bills, the organization has fielded requests for help with groceries, fuel, and medication. She said gift cards for those items are tremendously

certain amount in our accounts (so that) no one gets turned down,” Charles commented. “We like to keep a cushion in case something like this happens.” “Something like this” includes the loss of several smaller fundraisers that had been scheduled since March, as well as the signature October event. “ We have a backup plan,” Charles said. “We want to help our community as much as we can.” This year’s benefit had been set for Saturday, Oct. 3, but Help The Fight has traded a buffet dinner of chicken piccata for a drive-through chicken barbecue meal. The organization hopes to sell at least 1,000 tickets for the meals, which will each include a leg and thigh, an apple, coleslaw, chips, a roll and butter, and a beverage. Baked goods prepared and prewrapped by a local smorgasbord will be available for a la carte purchase. The drivethrough pickup will be held at Help The Fight’s headquarters, 143 Oakridge Drive, Mountville, beginning at 11 a.m. and continuing until sold out. Tickets may be purchased by calling the office at 717455-7095 or visiting www.helpthefight.org. Additionally, the auction will go forward as planned, but it will take place online instead of in person. Since the first benefit auction in 2009, auctioneer John Carl has donated his time to Help The Fight, and this year is no exception. John Carl Auction Company will host the online auction, which will go live on Thursday, Oct.

1. Bidding will close on Saturday, Oct. 17, and the winning bidders may pick up their items at the Help The Fight office afterward. Help The Fight is accepting donations of new items or quality antiques for the auction. In contrast with in-person auctions, gift cards cannot be accepted, “but we love gift baskets,” Charles said. Past auctions have included furniture, jewelry, vacation stays, fine art, children’s toys and crafts, home accessories, and fashionable attire. Individuals may call the office to arrange transport of donations before Saturday, Sept. 19. “We’re going to hope and pray that we have decent support,” Charles commented. “The community is hurting, and we know this, but we’ve also found that the community is so giving, especially during difficult times.” The Help The Fight office is open, but appointments are preferred. Temperatures will be taken before entry into the building, and masks must be worn at all times. “We are here if someone needs to see us physically, but we are sensitive to health concerns,” Charles explained. Patient coordinator Susie Dailey noted that she is overseeing an email subscription drive. Anyone who would like to receive emails with Help The Fight updates may sign up on the website. Volunteer opportunities with Help The Fight are available, and readers may call the aforementioned number for more information.

Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, will offer two classes this fall. “Mastering the Monologue” will take place on Tuesdays, Sept. 8 through Oct. 13. One of the most intimidating aspects of auditions can be the monologue. In “Mastering the Monologue,” local director and actor Kevin Ditzler will guide attendees through what they need to know to make an impact at their next general audition. Partcipants may join via Zoom for this small group class that will allow them to work privately, perform for an audience, and receive realtime feedback. This class will provide weekly 60-minute group sessions for performance and one weekly 30minute session for each student with Ditzler for in-depth one-on-one work. Participants will leave the class with two audition-ready monologues.

Acting and Scene Study will be offered on Thursdays, Sept. 17 to Nov. 5. This class is for committed, experienced actors age 18 and up who wish to refine their craft. Starting from existing foundations of technique, participants will consider physical life, emotional life, and character development through text analysis, improvisation, and warm-up exercises with paired scene partners to explore the actors’ instrument in a safe environment. Managing artistic director Jim Johnson will teach the class. Class size will be limited to 12 to 16 actors. A final showcase is possible, but the emphasis will be on discovering strengths and weaknesses, not performance. There is a registration fee for each class. To register, readers may visit https://mariettaarts.org/ and select Education Programs.

The City of Lancaster was awarded a $50,000 grant in July by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for the Office of Public Art’s Public Art Community Engagement (PACE) program. The grant was awarded to fund the new PACE manager position in the Office of Public Art, which will run the PACE Neighbors program. The PACE manager will also support the Office of Neighborhood Engagement through resident-driven public art projects. The position was posted on Feb. 14 and applications closed on March 13, but the selection process was delayed due to COVID-19. The Office of Public Art was one of 855 organizations nationwide to receive a grant from the NEA. The grants were made possible through CARES Act funding to support previous NEA award recipients with staff salaries, fees for artists or contractual personnel, and facilities costs. This award marks the third grant that the City of Lancaster has received from the NEA in the last year. To learn more, readers may visit www.cityoflancasterpa.com.

Knepper suspects that recent occurrences may have changed perspectives on meaningful gifts. “I think through this (pandemic) people may have realized that stuff really isn’t important, other than basic necessities,” she said. “(Instead of) all the stuff we might have thought was necessary, we can refocus on what’s important.” COVID-19 and the resulting restrictions also encouraged the changes in how the fair will be held this year. “We decided to keep it virtual,” said Knepper, who added that the organization will be spotlighting 30 nonprofit organizations that have taken part in the fair previously. “The sponsors that would normally have been our supporters are going through a tough time, so we are trying to have minimal overhead costs,” she explained. She added that, as in the past, there will be variety in the organizations that are featured and that both local and global nonprofits will be included. Local organizations that will be featured in the 2020 GTGH are Milagro House, SWAN, Music for Everyone, Lancaster County Reach Out and Read Coalition, Lancaster Farm Sanctuary, The Common Wheel, and Power Packs Project. Other area nonprofits that will be highlighted are Lifecycles, The Edible Classroom, Mom’s House, Aarons Acres, Faith Friendship Community of Mountville, the Lancaster Junior League, Nurse Family Partnership, North Star Initiative, Clare House Lancaster, Church World Service Lancaster, and Advoz. Organizations with furtherreaching missions are Feed My Starving Children, World Bicycle Relief, Connection Ubuntu, Habitat for Humanity, Rafiki Africa Foundation, Brittany’s Hope, HOPE International, Heifer Project,Vickie’s Angel Foundation, Outreach Paraguay, Siloam Ethiopia, and Meals on Wheels.

Introduces Reusable Bag Program

The Giant Company introduced a new reusable bag program on July 16. The program is designed to provide additional support to community partners focused on eliminating hunger, changing children’s lives and healing the planet. The bags will rotate seasonally, with a portion of the proceeds going to the corresponding nonprofit partner. The first bag, in stores now, benefits eight local Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals in the communities where the company has a presence: The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia; Penn State Children’s Hospital in Hershey; Geisinger Janet Weis Children’s Hospital in Danville; Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.; University of Virginia Children’s Hospital in Charlottesville, Va.; WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va.; Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore, Md.; and Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital. In September through early next year, the reusable bag will have a hunger relief focus in support of regional food banks. In spring 2021, customers can support Planet Bee Foundation, a nonprofit organization focused on driving awareness for pollinators in local communities.
