Close out the summer with community fun in East Petersburg

Before summer’s long and leisurely days bid a final farewell, the East Petersburg Events Committee will offer the community a full roster of festivities to send the season out with a bang.
The community events will take place at East Petersburg Community Park, 6051 Pine St., East Petersburg, and the event committee’s lineup will kick off with the East Pete Blues Festival at noon on Saturday, Aug. 31. This year, the annual concert will feature performances by Smokehouse 4, Bluestime, Soul Miners Union, Buzzard Luck, Muddy Ruckus, the Blues Reincarnation Project and Skyla Burrell Band. Throughout the day, refreshments may be purchased from food trucks such as Walk-O Taco, Simply Greek, Scoop Ó Dough, Krazy Kones and Dutch Country Concessions. The Blues Festival will once again feature a beer garden provided by Mad Chef Craft Brewing, which was introduced to the event in 2023.
From Wednesday, Sept. 11, to Saturday, Sept. 14, the East Petersburg Days series will return to the park to offer a variety of events to local community members and visitors from across the county. Each day of the series will
feature carnival rides and games for guests of all ages, and the activities will be provided by Russ Amusements. Food, drinks and desserts will be available to purchase from different food trucks and local organizations on each day of the series. The East Petersburg Lions Club will attend the event on Wednesday and Thursday, and Friday and Saturday will feature M&M Makin the Bacon, Traveling J’s, Halo’s Eatery and Premium Shaved Ice.
The 2024 East Petersburg Days will feature live music from a different artist on each day. Rock
group Andora will perform in the evening on Sept. 11, which will kick off with the national anthem and recognition of first responders to commemorate 9/11.
This year, the schedule has been modified to move several activities to Friday instead of Saturday to better accommodate attendees’ schedules. The Friday, Sept. 13, festivities and live entertainment will include a juggler, a whoopie pie eating contest, a magician, balloon animal twisting, face painting and games for kids offered by the East Petersburg Elementary PTO. Scotch will perform from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., and the evening will wrap up with a firework display at 9:30 p.m. “We tweak what we’re going to be doing a little bit every year, and we really try to include as many different parts of the community as possible,” said Kristin Troop, chair of the events committee. Organizations such as local Scout troops, the East Petersburg Historical Society and vendors from the area will participate in the 2024 series.

In 2009, Lynda Charles organized a bake sale to raise money for her sister-in-law and her co-worker. The women had recently received diagnoses of breast cancer, and the treatments prevented them from receiving an income or insurance from working. The bake sale raised more than $9,000, and it prompted Lynda and her husband, David Charles, to create Mountville-based nonprofit Help The Fight. Fifteen years later, the organization has raised more than $1.2 million dollars for breast cancer patients throughout Lancaster County.
Help The Fight will host its 15th annual fundraising banquet on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Spooky Nook Sports, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim. The event will take place from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m., and it will include live and silent auctions, prize drawings and giveaways. Only 500 tickets for the banquet will be sold, and the deadline for registration is Saturday, Sept. 14. Each table will seat a maximum of eight guests. Arts and craft show planned
The 36th Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show will take place at Root’s Country Market, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1. The event will feature artists and craftspeople from the local area and beyond. All works in the juried event are handcrafted by the artists, and the items range from traditional to contemporary works.
Demonstrations will showcase the design and construction processes. Those who will give demonstrations include Elizabeth Carroll, tie-dyeing; Lodema Lindamood from Virginia, carpet bags; Frank LaMartina, pencil drawings; Pam Bartl, weaving; Susan Quinn, decorative painting; Dan Shultz, personalized icicle ornaments; Holly Wellington,
sterling silver and gemstone jewelry; Mary Ann Vessey, oil painting; John Paul Warren, broom making; new exhibitor Morgan Pallas, watercolors with a fantasy theme; Andy Smith from Lititz, realistic watercolors; and Susan Wolf, painted gourds for use as boxes, bowls, teapots, and birdhouses.

The banquet will include a buffet dinner and a benefit auction. Items available to bid on will include designer handbags, weekend getaways, artwork, jewelry, gift baskets, toys for children, furniture, gift cards from local restaurants and services for homes and families. Separate tickets may be purchased with cash to participate in various prize drawings held throughout the evening. A prize drawing for a cash reward will take place to celebrate the event’s 15th anniversary.
Every year, the items included in the banquet’s auctions are donated by various local businesses and individuals in the community. Anyone who wishes to donate items prior to the banquet may contact Help The Fight’s office via email or by calling 717-455-7095.
“We’re inviting members of the local community to join us as we celebrate 15 years and raising $1.2 million for cancer patients
in Lancaster County,” said patient coordinator Susie Dailey. “The generosity of our supporters allows us to continue our mission to help people throughout the community in need.”
Although Help The Fight’s annual fundraiser has evolved to incorporate a banquet and auctions, the event always includes a bake sale to remember its humble origins.
Lynda decided to make the first fundraiser a bake sale to enable local residents to support the cause regardless of their income levels.
“I think many people have rallied behind us because the money we raise stays in the community,”
Dailey said. “Our board of directors
is also totally volunteer-driven, and everyone feels passionately about the cause.”
The funds raised from the annual banquet directly benefit breast cancer patients in the local community. Help The Fight provides Lancaster County residents with what the organization calls gap funding, which entails financial support to help recipients pay for household bills as well as medical expenses. Many Americans’ insurance benefits are provided by
their employers, and breast cancer patients often lose their insurance while undergoing treatment because their treatment prevents them from working fulltime.
