Hear Him Roar: Student Wins Golden Lion Award BY COURTNEY MENGEL
Susie Dailey (left) and Lynda Charles promote Help The Fight’s annual Benefit Banquet and Auction.
Help The Fight To End Breast Cancer efore I was born, my nanny and pappy, Beverly and Joseph Mengel, separated. When I was in elementary school, I grew very close to a woman named Diana, who was dating my pappy at the time. While the two of them were together, Diana was diagnosed with breast cancer. Sadly, she passed away from the disease. A few years later, my pappy was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He stayed strong - stronger than I ever thought possible. But I woke up one morning during my sophomore year at Lebanon Valley College to a phone call from my younger sister. Through her tears and shaky voice, she told me our pappy was gone.
B
Our nanny passed away from ovarian cancer no more than a year after him. It all happened so quickly. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been aware of how cancer can affect not only those who have the disease, but also the friends, coworkers, and family members around them. Lynda Charles, founder of Help The Fight, understands what I mean. Located at 143 Oakridge Drive, Mountville, Help The Fight is a nonprofit organization that supports individuals living with breast cancer. The organization has provided funds to buy groceries and tires, pay rent and mortgages, and cover day care fees and medical bills. As a nonprofit, the organization can help anyone regardless of
where they live, but Lancaster County and surrounding counties are its prime focus. On Saturday, Oct. 2, Help The Fight will host its annual Benefit Banquet and Auction. The event will take place at Spooky Nook Sports, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim, from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. There will be giveaways, silent and live auctions, and games. Dinner will be included with the purchase of a ticket, and there will be a cash bar. The event will be casual, and Melanie Gardner from Warm 103.3 will serve as the master of ceremonies. “It’s a fun, fun, fun event,” stated patient coordinator Susie Dailey. “Almost no one leaves our event empty handed,” said Charles. “People should attend to support us and
because it is fun. It’s the community helping the community.” Preregistration, which is required, will close on Friday, Sept. 10. To preregister, call 717-455-7095. “I’m excited that we are able to have the event!” exclaimed Charles. “The October event is our biggest fundraiser of the year.” Sponsorships are available. Help The Fight is in need of donations for the banquet, whether in the form of gift baskets, artwork, or monetary gifts. Those interested can contact Help The Fight’s office at helpthefightnow@gmail.com. For more information, call 717-4557095 or visit www.helpthefight.org. Help The Fight is also active on Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

At Hempfield High School (HHS), students who enroll in the communications and technology, or “comm tech,” courses sharpen their skills in video production, camera operation, script and storyboard creation, lighting, audio production, and video editing. Eleventh-grader Maguire Younes is one of these students. Last year, one of the many projects Maguire completed for comm tech was a news story on Fastnacht Day. As an annual Pennsylvania Dutch tradition, Fastnacht Day is a celebration that falls on Shrove Tuesday, which is the day before Ash Wednesday. The German word “fastnacht” translates to “fasting night” or “almost night” in English. The tradition is to eat the very best foods before the Lenten fast. Maguire’s news story spotlights Weiser’s Market in Lititz, and he said it was his favorite project that fall semester. After his comm tech teacher, Mr. Matthew Binder, notified the students about a digital storytelling competition, Maguire decided to submit his Fastnacht Day project to the Golden Lion Awards.

The Golden Lion Awards is produced and directed by the Academy of Cinematic Arts, which is a Christian arts education nonprofit committed to helping students discover their stories through digital storytelling as well as providing youths with educational programming, competition, award recognition, social experiences, and a sense of community. The film festival is open to high school and middle school students who live in states within a 500mile radius of Columbus, Ohio. Maguire applied to the Golden Lion Awards in the spring and found out from a friend that the Fastnacht Day project was selected to advance in the competition. While watching the livestream results, Maguire discovered he had won the Golden Lion Award in the News Story category. “He’s always been interested in technology and computers,” stated Maguire’s

mother, Melissa Younes. “I mean, that’s his love.” In the history of the comm tech department at HHS, Maguire was the first student to win a first place Golden Lion Award. “I definitely see myself going into the communication realm after high school,” said Maguire. “I probably will submit another comm tech project in the spring.” To watch Maguire’s news story on Fasnacht Day, visit https://vimeo.com /566278105.

Well, it won’t exactly be a visit, but there will be a virtual watch party. On Wednesday, Sept. 8, and Thursday, Sept. 9, Christian Business Fellowship and Mission Church will co-host a watch party for Faith Driven Movements’ two virtual conferences: “Faith Driven Entrepreneur Live” and “Faith Driven Inventors.” The mission of Faith Driven Movements is to inspire, educate, and mobilize people to use their time, talents, and other resources in the marketplace. Faith Driven Movements brings together leaders from around the world who seek to make a financial,
social, environmental, and spiritual impact through their business ventures. Last year, Faith Driven Movements held its first global, virtual conference. The first day was catered to entrepreneurs and the second to investors. The same two-day format will be used this year. Watch parties in Lancaster County for Faith Driven Movements’ two virtual conferences will be held at Mission Church, 651 Lampeter Road, Lancaster. On both Sept. 8 and Sept. 9, registration will open at 11 a.m. and the event will begin at 11:30 a.m. Lunch will be provided both days, and the conference will conclude at 5 p.m. “The price to attend is kept
very reasonable,” said Jeff Hostetter, member of Mission Church and Christian Business Fellowship. “People can come to one day or they get a combo ticket to attend both.” There will be 31 virtual speakers at “Faith Driven Entrepreneur Live” and 33 at “Faith Driven Inventors Live.” Among them will be Tim Keller, Cathie Wood, and Donald Miller. Keller is the founder of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, chairman of Redeemer City to City, founder of The Gospel Coalition, and author of “The Reason for God.” Wood is a star stock-picker and founder of ARK Invest, which invests in innovations like self-driving cars and genomics. Miller is the
CEO of StoryBrand and author of “Building a StoryBrand,” “Blue Like Jazz,” and more. “This is a great way to gather, feel connected, meet someone new, and build relationships,” stated Hostetter. “In addition to the relationships, the teaching will be really high-quality. There will be stories of impact woven into the time together, and they will be very powerful and impactful.” Faith Driven Movements recently published its first book, and all attendees of the global, virtual conference will receive a free copy. For more information or to purchase a ticket, visit www.faithdriven entrepreneurlive.org and www.faithdriveninvestorlive.org.

All AmTryke riders and their families are invited to attend the event, which will include noncompetitive riding
courses, entertainment and refreshments. In the case of rain, the event will take place on Sunday, Sept. 26. The chief mission of the
Lancaster AMBUCS chapter, a Lancaster-based service organization dating to 1925, is to purchase, build and grant AmTrykes.

We need volunteers like you! Contact smethers@uwlanc.org for more details and to sign up for an Informational Session in September or October.

Wiederseim Associates is pleased to offer the private collection of Carol and Ed Stoudt for auction on Saturday, July 24, at 9 a.m. The sale includes the contents of the legendary Stoudt’s Black Angus d i
The couple opened the Black Angus Antique Mall along with the restaurant and beer garden in the 1980s. Business was good. Why not open a brewery? Based on German beers brewed in the i h i b di i h
for their business and home. They assembled items such as Black Forest carved furniture (including two tall case clocks), whimsical circus novelties, Art Nouveau
running rooster, vintage posters, a large collection of German steins, a restored 1932 Auburn Convertible and a 1937 Ford Woody, partially restored, all of which will be in the July 24 sale. “If you’ve ever been to Stoudt’s, you’ll be very familiar with the items in this sale and won’t want to miss it. Their Oktoberfests were the best! Ed in his lederhosen leading the procession, the beer hall with great German food and the German band,” said Ted Wiederseim, auctioneer and owner of Wiederseim Associates Inc. “The Stoudt sale will be our first live sale in over a year, and we’re very excited about getting back to business as usual.” Bidding will be live/in-person as well as live online through Bidsquare, Invaluable and Liveauctioneers. A preview starts Monday, July 19, and runs through Friday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be held at Wiederseim’s facility, located at 1041 W. Bridge St., Phoenixville, Pa. For additional information, call 610-827-1910 or visit www.wiederseim.com.
