Saying Farewell To EMM’s Salunga Campus A Letter From The Publisher
By Dayna M. Reidenouer
After 64 years in Salunga, Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM) is preparing to move. In February, EMM hosted a groundbreaking event at its new facility at 450 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Even with slight delays caused by the shutdown this spring, the renovations are on schedule, and the organization is planning to relocate its offices in November. As excited as EMM workers are about the move, they recognize the emotional connection many people See EMM pg 7
A farewell to the Salunga campus of Eastern Mennonite Missions will be held on Sept. 19. Guests may tour the meetinghouse, former train station, and house during the event.

The young couple at a dinner party that Valley Farm Supply owners J.C. and Caren Remsberg attended was frustrated with the challenges facing their small trucking company: hiring people, growing the business, and even the possibility of returning to work for someone else. The Remsbergs were empathetic, and they passed along the same advice J.C. had received from a college friend who owns a logging business. “Nothing is better than being on your own as a businessperson, and he knew that,” J.C. related. “We really talked SCORE up to him and (that) he needs to be in the next Simple Steps program.” “SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon is an active chapter of professional mentors who are here to help people who want to start or optimize their business,” explained certified mentor and education

“Practice makes perfect,” so the saying goes, and it is proving true in the fundraising meals hosted by Siloam Ethiopia in Landisville. Prior to the shutdown in March, the organization co-founded by nurse Wegayhu Ketema and her husband, Ethiopian Evangelical Church in Lancaster (EECL) pastor
Demeke Getahun, held quarterly buffet dinners. When indoor dining was discouraged by state guidelines, the buffets became takeouts. “Takeout style is very good,” Getahun commented after Siloam Ethiopia’s second fundraiser in the new format. He noted that one of the benefits is that customers can enjoy Ethiopian food for more than one meal. “It’s also easier for us,” he added. “It saves our time: We don’t have to set up or clean up (a dining room).” See Ethiopian Takeout pg 4 Getahun and Ketema

It comes as no surprise that we continue to face many of the challenges we have experienced over the past six months. Who hasn’t used the word “uncertainty” more times than they can count? Despite this uncertainty, we have worked hard to keep our families and community safe while providing positive, creative ways to reinforce that we are in this together. We encourage you to continue sharing your stories and connecting with us on social media so we can go on spreading all the good we see in this world. At Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. The local SCORE chapter offers one-to-one mentoring as well as educational programs, including the flagship “Simple Steps for Starting a Business.” Simple Steps involves five twohour sessions - currently conducted online - in which experienced professionals cover business planning, funding, legal considerations, marketing, and other subjects. “The Simple Steps program was excellent and helped answer a lot of basic questions we had about business,” J.C. said. “We got to hear from other new and potential business owners in the program and heard what they wanted to achieve.” Simple Steps alumna and Sage Heart Studio owner Ramona Ndlovu also found the program helpful. “It was an encouragement to see so many other small business owners and hopefuls giving entrepreneurship a try. I was not alone,” she said. “Some of my classmates had already been running successful businesses, and it was especially helpful to hear their questions, insights, and ways of solving challenges.” Ndlovu appreciated the opportunity to ask specific questions
about her business, which enabled her to determine what she could do on her own and where she might need to hire experts. At the first session, she learned about important paperwork she needed to file with a state agency. “The course provided helpful, timely, and thorough information for supporting the growth of my business. In class, the presenters made sure to use class members’ business types as examples so we could better understand how to put the tools into practice,” she remarked. The Simple Steps program is offered six times a year, and information about upcoming sessions is available at https://lancaster.score.org. There is a cost to participate in Simple Steps. SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon offers additional educational programs, some of which have been designed specifically to address current issues in business. “We regrouped when COVID hit,” Bonser commented. “We put together a number of programs … to help businesses navigate these new waters.” A number of those programs were recorded and posted to the @scorelancaster YouTube account. LABOR DAY SPECIALS! SEPTEMBER 2-8
Getahun and Ketema have continued to perfect the process for the takeout meals. At the meal on Aug. 1, customers pulled up to EECL, 175 Church St., Landisville, and were handed preassembled bags of containers with doro wat, the signature chicken-and-hardboiled-egg dish of Ethiopia; spicy lentils; split peas; atikilt wat, a mixture of onions, cabbage, and carrots; and injera, a sourdough-type flatbread. At the next meal, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 1 to 5 p.m., customers will be able to choose which plant-based dish they would like to accompany their doro wat and injera. The change was made in response to customer feedback. Donations will be accepted for the meal, and proceeds will be used to purchase a blood chemistry machine for use in the free medical clinic that Siloam Ethiopia established and operates in Ketema’s hometown of Harar, Ethiopia. Thanks to a previous fundraising meal, Siloam Ethiopia previously purchased a complete blood count machine. Having these two devices at the clinic will enable bloodwork to be performed on-site. “Because we don’t have it, our patients have to go to other places, but they don’t have money to do it,” Getahun explained. The free clinic serves the poorest people in Harar, providing medical care for homeless and elderly populations, as well as individuals who live in the area. Based on the results of bloodwork, the medical staff will refer clients to the hospital or order medicine so they do not have to spend money they might not have on a trip into the city.

Getahun noted that right now, due to COVID-19, the hospital is accepting only the most serious of cases. The medical clinic is trying to pick up the slack. “Siloam Ethiopia is giving service more efficiently now,” Getahun said. “The clinic is jammed. They help a lot of people.” The clinic is also providing some food support for elderly clients. Ketema has picked up extra shifts at a Hershey rehab hospital in order to send money to the clinic to buy food. “(The elderly individuals) don’t have anything,” Getahun said. “Expenses have doubled since before COVID.” The medical staff members at the clinic have been providing COVID-19 awareness and safety training to clinic clients and community members. Ketema has been collecting personal protective equipment (PPE) to send to Harar for use at the clinic and in the community. She plans to soon send a shipment, which will include 10 donated wheelchairs. “People are sending us masks. We are really blessed,” Getahun commented, adding that hospitals in York and Baltimore have donated PPE upon Ketema’s request. Siloam Ethiopia had established satellite clinics in schools around Harar, but they closed when the school year ended. When students return to class, the clinics will resume operation. The organization also plans to dig a well at a school that has no access to running water. At a previous fundraising meal, a supporter dropped off a $5,000 check for the project. “I am amazed at how God is working. It’s just blowing my mind,” Getahun remarked. For more information about Siloam Ethiopia, readers may visit www.siloamethio.org. Orders placed in advance for the Sept. 12 meal are appreciated but not required. Individuals may email siloamethio@gmail.com or call Getahun at 717-874-8510 to indicate their meal preferences.

EMM from pg 1 silent auction. Admission will be free of charge, but timed-entry tickets must be ordered in advance to ensure appropriate physical distancing. Tickets may be ordered by searching for “Farewell to Salunga” at www.eventbrite.com. The rummage sale will offer furniture, books, and artifacts that will not be making the move to Lancaster. The sale will be located in the meetinghouse basement, but some items will be located outside so shoppers can spread out more, Martin said. The silent auction will feature bigger-ticket items. “It’s furniture that we feel might be a little more valuable, such as the deacon’s chairs from the meetinghouse,” Martin explained, noting that an artist has been commissioned to make sketches of all three of EMM’s homes - Intercourse, Salunga, and Lancaster - and the resulting artwork will also be up for bids. The chicken barbecue meal will include a leg and thigh, applesauce, coleslaw, chips, a baked good, and a beverage. Leg quarters may be purchased separately. The meal will be takeout only, but customers may bring blankets and chairs to eat their meals outside on the Salunga campus grounds. Orders may be placed as add-ons to the entry tickets select “0” if not desiring to enter the buildings - on the Eventbrite page. There is a service fee for payments processed online, but the promo code “CASH” can be applied to pay at pickup. The deadline to preorder chicken is Saturday, Sept. 5. Some extra meals will be available on a first-come, first-served basis on Sept. 19. Donations will also be accepted. Proceeds from the event will go toward the $35,000 goal to cover labor, materials, furnishings, and landscaping for the Lancaster facility. For more information, readers may contact Martin at 717-898-2251, ext. 266, or krista.martin@emm.org.

have with the current facility at 53 W. Brandt Blvd., Salunga. A farewell event has been planned for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19. “We want to give everybody who’s been connected (with EMM) a chance to see the space again,” kingdom team director Krista Martin said. “We want to honor the legacy and what we have before we move into the city.” Martin noted that Salunga is only the organization’s second home. EMM began in 1894 as Home Mission Advocates, when a dozen men from Lancaster Mennonite Conference who had a heart for missions began meeting together for prayer and to determine what missions could look like. When EMM outgrew its Intercourse space, it bought the Salunga Mennonite Church meetinghouse in 1956 and established a campus there, with an office building, a house, and an old train station across the street. The property is divided among three deeds and is for sale. The Prince Street building will consolidate operations to one deed and one roof. “We’ll all be on the same floor there, with an open floor plan,” Martin said. “We’re hoping it will be beneficial for more collaboration among staff.” The Sept. 19 event will feature walkthrough tours of the Salunga campus, a rummage sale, a chicken barbecue, and a
