EPC will celebrate 70th anniversary with community event

In 1954, Alvin Engle bought a printing press with a dream of starting his own publication. Alvin, who had been working full time in the printing business, put the press in the basement of his home in Mount Joy, and together he and his wife, Pauline, laid the foundation for what would become Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC). As EPC celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, the company invites members of the community to attend an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, at its facility at 1100 Corporate Blvd. in Lancaster.

“It’s important for us to continue the legacy of what was started.”

Refreshments will be available to purchase from food trucks such as Auntie Anne’s, Cupcakes by Casey, Tri-County Barbecue and Homage. Guests may enjoy complimentary ice cream from Kreider Farms while supplies last. Live entertainment will be provided by Blessing & Fowler from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Comprising musicians Zach Blessing and Nate Fowler, the duo performs soulful tunes and classic hits throughout central Pennsylvania. The event will also feature a live broadcast from WJTL from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and local mascots Johnny from Achenbach’s Pastries and Cylo from the Lancaster Stormers will make an appearance.

UDS wraps up another successful golf outing

The first day of school can be an exciting time for many children; the start of the academic year sets the stage for countless opportunities to make friends and explore new subjects. But the first few weeks of classes can also be a stressful time for students as they transition to a different schedule and acclimate to the change of pace. On the first day of the 2024-25 school year, many students in Lancaster

County were greeted by a special staff member: a facility dog that has been trained by United Disabilities Services (UDS) to help kids overcome the anxiety and stress of the school day.

Dogs trained by UDS specialize in a few key areas, but the organization has seen a growing trend in the number of local school districts requesting canines for their classrooms. These facility dogs are placed in schools to help create a calming learning environment, and they receive

West Hempfield Fire & Rescue (WHFR), 3476 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, will host an open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15. The free community event will feature demonstrations from firefighters and police officers, interactive activities for children and information about general fire safety, as well as vendors and food trucks. A rain date has been set for Sunday, Sept. 29.

Members of the 70th anniversary committee and EPC staff invite the community to attend the open house celebration.

Church sets concert, plein air event

First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster, will continue its “Organic Reflections” concert series with The Lighter Side from Living Composers” on First Friday, Sept. 6, at 8 p.m. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m.

Guest organist Ken Krause will play the Hill Byrne Christiansen Memorial Organ, presenting music by living composers. Selections will include “Procession” by Russell Schulz-Widmar and “Grand Choeur in d-Minor” by Paul Fey. Admission is free. For more information, call the church office at 717-397-5149.

Additionally, Art in the Garden, a free plein air event, will be held in the courtyard of First Reformed Church on Sept. 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. During the event, the public is invited to stroll through the gardens and

watch local artists at work or shop for works of art.

Visitors should enter via the courtyard from Orange Street to the left of the church or from Christian Street to the rear of the church.

First Reformed Church is a diverse congregation with a continuing commitment to engaging downtown residents and guests, including serving more than 16,000 free meals each year for those facing food insecurity. Art in the Garden is one way the church shares its urban garden with the community while supporting local artists.

Local artists are invited to join by contacting Theresa Rettig at 717-682-2240. Artists should bring their paints, brushes, easels, table or pottery equipment and work on a piece or display work for sale.

Young entrepreneur chosen to pitch business plan

Thirteen-year-old entrepreneur Bennett Dufrene, known on social media as Mr. Ice Cream Kid, alongside his father, Bernie Dufrene, has been

selected as one of 14 finalists who will pitch their business plan at the Alibaba CoCreate conference. Bennett was chosen from

Food, drinks and desserts will be available to purchase from food trucks, including Spud Muffin, Lori’s Lattes, Munchiez, Drifters, Softie Whirl and Pappy’s BBQ. Vendors such as Hess Woodwork, Division Sports, Tastefully Simple and Kendra’s Kraft Corner will sell a variety of items, including custom-made apparel, jewelry, artwork, hair tinsel and 3D printed creations.

Children will have an opportunity to make crafts at a coloring station, and firefighters will allow kids to take a close-up look at fire engines and try on safety equipment. WHFR personnel will also offer an interactive safety demonstration in the smoke trailer; participants will learn how to safely exit a burning building and avoid smoke inhalation during a simulated house fire in the trailer. An additional demonstration will be offered by members of a police K-9 unit.

Tara Ney, who manages public relations for WHFR, said the main goals of the event include familiarizing children with fire safety protocol and giving them the tools and information necessary to navigate emergency situations. “My youngest is going into fourth grade, and I was surprised to hear how many kids are afraid of certain kinds of equipment,” Ney added. “That’s why we want them to be able to try on face masks and other gear so they don’t look scary. Ultimately, we want

everyone to know what to expect in these situations and what to do.”

Ney said the other goal of hosting an open house is to engage the community and share information about the work WHFR does in the area. Although the event will be free to attend, the organization will receive donations to help cover the cost of its equipment and general operating expenses. “On average, a firefighter’s gear from head to toe costs anywhere from $10,000 to $12,000. The jaws of life can cost up to $10,000 for a single one,” Ney said. “Like everything else in the world, prices of equipment have gone up, so we’re hoping to do more community events and to make sure our members are protected.”

WHFR is always accepting adult volunteers and junior members, who are able to sign up once they turn 14 years old. Individuals interested in volunteering will have an opportunity to walk around the fire station and learn more about firefighters’ duties from WHFR members during the open house.

hundreds of submissions. The conference will take place at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas, Nev., on Friday, Sept. 6.

Hosted by Daymond John and Christopher Guerrera of The Modern Inventor, the highstakes pitch will be a focal point of the conference, with an audience of more than 2,000 attendees and an estimated 7 million online viewers via www .alibaba.com.

Bennett and Bernie will showcase their plans to expand Mr. Ice Cream, a brand known for its electric DelightBike, a revolutionary way to bring joy and ice cream to communities. Their vision aims to create new opportunities for entrepreneurs to make an impact and deliver joy wherever they go.

special training to comfort students who struggle with anxiety and to help de-escalate emotional outbursts.

Over the last five years, UDS has received more applications for facility dogs than ever before; the organization began talks with the School District of Lancaster to place dogs in its schools downtown, and these special canine helpers can be now found in nearly every school district in the county.

UDS began training 16 new puppies this year, and it invests upward of $25,000 per dog over the course of its training. To sustain its service dog programs, UDS holds an annual golf tournament. The event took place on Aug. 16 this year,

and it was the first time the fundraiser had a full flight of 144 golfers. The tournament raised more than $65,000 for UDS, which is a $10,000 increase from last year. “I am beyond proud. We exceeded all expectations,” said Lori Breece, UDS service dog manager. “Starting out strong in the new fiscal year puts us in a good position to continue our work through the winter months when things usually slow down.”

This is the fourth year UDS has hosted a golf fundraiser. A few key changes were made to enhance golfers’ experience and to keep the pace of play moving swiftly, and the event was shortened from six hours to five hours. UDS attributes

the growing success of the fundraiser to the growing demand for dogs, as well as new partnerships with local businesses and sponsors.

In addition to the funds raised by the golf outing and local sponsors, UDS relies on numerous volunteers to sustain its service dog programs. Each dog must complete a 22-month training process, and volunteers assist by walking dogs and taking them home for a weekend to get a break from

the kennel. “I can’t overstate how important volunteers are. Without them, we can’t bring in new puppies and they don’t get enough socialization during training,” Breece said. “We’re always looking for people to help with whatever they can, even if it’s just walking a dog for an hour. There’s no commitment.”

Exhibit to feature artworks created during the pandemic

“Isolation,” a collection of abstract paintings created during the pandemic by Jeremy Lee Rebuck, will be on display at Mulberry Art Studios this September. The public is invited to join the artist for a First Friday Reception on Sept. 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. Mulberry Art Studios, located in downtown Lancaster at 19-21 N. Mulberry St.,

offers free parking in its private lot.

Rebuck, who created the pieces over the course of four years, began painting at the beginning of the pandemic while living alone in quarantine. He found painting to be a great outlet for all the emotions he was feeling. He decided to share his artworks with the

community once everyone was able to gather together again; through the project, he hopes to raise awareness of mental health and the benefits that art and creativity can have.

and their sponsors

Zion Lutheran Church, 85 Brandt Blvd., Landisville, held a “Bring a Friend to Church” Sunday on Aug. 4. When registrations were complete, there were 21 guests in the congregation for the 9 am. service.

Guests and sponsors received a gift card from Landisville/ Salunga’s newly opened Trolley

The recipient of the scholarship must have attended East Petersburg Elementary School for at least three years and must have participated in one extracurricular activity or have had 32 hours of volunteer service in the 2023-24 school year.
