Hempfield

Grant will fund enrichment opportunities in local schools

The Academy of Arts & Sciences, a program offered by the Church of the Apostles United Church of Christ, 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, recently announced a $1,000 grant it will provide to the Hempfield Foundation. The grant will support the foundation’s efforts to fund various science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics projects in Hempfield School District schools. This is the first year the Academy

of Arts & Sciences has partnered with the Hempfield Foundation. In the past, the academy has used a portion of its funds to offer various scholarships for students to receive an education in music, including the instrument and voice lessons. Due to a lack of applicants in the last year, the academy decided to use the scholarship funds to offer a grant to the Hempfield Foundation. The foundation will use the grant to help teachers sustain various enrichment projects and educational opportunities for students

in the 2024-25 academic year.

“We would love to work with the Hempfield Foundation again,” said Lars Potteiger, director of music ministries at the Academy of Arts & Sciences.

“They’re our neighbors here. As long as we have funding available that can benefit students, there’s definitely consideration to apply it in the future.”

The Church of the Apostles founded the Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2011 to provide education in the arts and enrichment opportunities for students

The experiences of fostering and adopting children can be both challenging and rewarding. They’re experiences that COBYS can both enhance and make more manageable.

Louis and Melissa Zoeller have been married 16 years, and they are the parents of seven kids, two of whom are their biological offspring and five of whom they adopted through the help

When you’re young, the world is full of adventure. Children’s imaginations can make digging holes in the yard feel as exhilarating as an archaeological dig, and with some creativity and a few sticks of sidewalk chalk, a driveway can transform into an intergalactic space vessel. Many adults grow out of the tendency to explore the wonders of everyday life that was enjoyed by their younger selves, but Adam Zurn, a local teacher and real-life

adventurer, is an exception. Zurn is a resident of Conestoga and a technology education teacher at Lampeter-Strasburg High School. But when Zurn is not in the classroom, you can probably find him exploring nearby historical sites off the beaten path or organizing competitive treasure hunts via his website, https://unchartedlan caster.com.

In April, more than 700 history buffs participated in Uncharted Lancaster’s fourth annual treasure hunt, which

Lars Potteiger (left), Dmitry Ishenko (center) and Rob Mintzner performed at the Church of the Apostles United Church of Christ in June as part of its free concert series.

of COBYS Family Services. For the Zoellers, who have affectionately dubbed their family “The Zoeller Bunch,” it’s sometimes a hectic, topsy-turvy existence, but one that they have no regrets about.

“If there was one thing that brought (Melissa and me) together, it was that we felt God was calling us to adopt,” said Louis. “It was the one thing we could agree upon. When we got involved with COBYS, it helped that they were a faithbased organization. When they asked us if we wanted to adopt, we prayed on it and said yes.”

In addition to Louis and Melissa, the Mountville-based Zoeller Bunch includes Coral, 15; Dominic, 14; Sophie, 8; Izabel, 6; Tatum, 6; Oaklee, 5; and Carson, 4. Sophie, Tatum, Izabel, Oaklee and Carson

were all under the Zoellers’ foster care first before being officially adopted at various times over the last six years.

Before they were legally adopted, the children were wards of the state, meaning they could’ve been removed from the Zoeller household at any time.

“Foster care exists to give biological families an opportunity to get safe,” said Melissa. “Foster care exists to provide safety for children. Kids need to be safe. If (biological) parents can’t meet those safety standards, the goal changes from re-unification to adoption. Adoption only happens when kids can’t re-unify safely. The primary goal is always working with the (biological) family. There’s no question that the biological families love them.”

whose schools may have limited courses. For more than a decade, the academy has offered art classes and private music lessons for students in any age group. “Some of it is mission work,” Potteiger said. “The idea was to have a place where students could study music and art as well.” The academy

also offers science courses such as stream studies, as the Church of the Apostles’ large property encompasses part of Brubaker Run.

In addition to its educational enrichment programs, the Academy of Arts & Sciences frequently hosts free concert series at the Church of the Apostles. The church previously held the Crown Concert Series, which it revived as one of the academy’s programs after a hiatus caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The next concert will feature local jazz group Temple Avenue, and it will take place on Sunday, Sept. 29, at 3 p.m.

“For us, we truly never knew if we were going to adopt until the decision was kind of made for us,” said Louis. “The courts decide which way the case is going to go. You know that any day (the children) could be out of your home.”

Before they became foster parents, Melissa and Louis received specific training from COBYS Family Services. During and after the foster care and adoption processes, the Zoellers have been afforded support opportunities that include regular visits from COBYS representatives, advice, encouragement, financial assistance and 24-hour access to a counselor.

“(COBYS) is there to facilitate and support foster families,” said Louis.

“If we have questions, we go to them. We had a county caseworker and a COBYS caseworker. (COBYS) was basically our main contact. Overall, COBYS is there for you.”

According to COBYS Family Services, approximately 15,000 children are currently in the Pennsylvania child welfare system. They are unable to live with their biological families because of abuse, neglect or behavioral issues.

“For us, (adoption) really wasn’t a question,” said Melissa, “because you get to know the kids. We already knew them; they already knew us. There’s no reason for it not to be forever.”

entailed a five-week quest to find a statue of a golden osprey. During the game, teams of treasure hunters worked together to answer riddles and to solve puzzles related to local history, slowly uncovering the coordinates of the statue and a cash prize. The annual scavenger hunt also serves as a fundraiser; this year, it raised around $4,200 for the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County and roughly $500 for LancasterHistory.

In addition to organizing the annual treasure hunt, Zurn offers a list of adventures on the Uncharted Lancaster website. Each adventure takes participates to historical sites, caves and ruins found throughout the Southern End and other remote parts of the county to discover prizes. Uncharted Lancaster’s adventure page also features “side quests,” scenic destinations that offer a hike on a beautiful trail as their reward. The adventures are self-guided, but Zurn tests each

one before he publishes it on his website along with recommended provisions and a fedora rating to denote how difficult the route is; one fedora indicates an easy hike, while five fedoras warn adventurers to be ready for a challenge.

“I think a lot of people - including myself - neglect our own local history. You take things for granted when you grow up around them,” said Zurn, a native of Susquehanna County. “Being a transplant in Lancaster, I’m always asking questions that make me want to peel back the layers and learn more about the area.”

Zurn has always had a love for history and an adventurous spirit, part of which he credits to watching iconic treasure-hunter movies such as “Indiana Jones” and “National Treasure.” But the idea for Uncharted Lancaster started in 2018, when Zurn had a conversation with a co-worker about his dog-walking routine. Zurn shared some of his favorite places to walk

his golden retriever, including the Enola Low Grade Trail and Shenk’s Ferry, and his co-worker asked if he had ever visited the old cemetery nearby. With only a few details and vague information about the graveyard available online, Zurn spent several weeks combing through the area until he discovered the elusive location, which contained gravestones dating back

to the 1700s. “It became a recurring thing in Lancaster; Google has no idea about these places, so I decide I’m going to find it,” Zurn said.

Zurn said he’s already prepping for next year’s treasure hunt, which will entail a quest to find the lost treasure of the Buzzard Gang of the Welsh Mountains.

Find a bargain at Fall Fest

As summer winds down, the residents of St. John’s Herr Estate are ready to serve up fun, flavor and fantastic finds during the annual Fall Fest. The event will be held at the retirement community, 200 Luther Lane, Columbia, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21.

The indoor yard sale will feature a large variety of items, said Carolyn Livingston, who is helping to organize the event.

“We have it set up in departments,” she said. “We have jewelry. We have baked goods. We line up paintings along the walls in the second-floor hallway. We have items for the kitchen, decorative items, puzzles, seasonal items, electronics, linens. We have oodles and oodles of books, CDs, DVDs and other mixed media.”

As resident Mary Miller stated, “You could almost decorate your entire apartment with everything you find here.”

New this year, visitors to Fall Fest will have the opportunity to win a handmade quilt as well.

Along with yard sale items, Fall Fest will feature a variety of food.

Additionally, Lancaster COB is offering a fall semester of Wednesday Night Live programs. The series began on Sept. 18 and will continue through Nov. 20. Each week includes a brief devotional and a meal by donation at 5:30 p.m., followed by activities for children and youths and an adult class in the church’s chapel at 6:30 p.m. In the adult class, pastor Don Fitzkee and Bob Kettering will lead a six-week study using the video series “The After Party,” which focuses on Christianity and politics. Produced by RedeemingBabel.org,

Baked goods prepared by residents will be for sale, as well as hot dogs, sloppy joes and beverages. Chicken corn soup, prepared by the St. John’s Herr Estate chef, will be available by the bowl or quart.

“People can take their food to go, or they can sit in our dining room and eat here,” Livingston said. Fall Fest has been held at St. John’s for more than 20 years. Items for sale are donated by residents and their families, and a group of people helps to sort and price everything.

“Originally, we started sorting and pricing a few weeks before Fall Fest,” Livingston said. “Last year, we started in April. This year, we started in March. We had so much fun. On Saturday mornings, we would get together and sort and price. We just had a great time.”

Over the years, Fall Fest has grown significantly, she shared. It started out just in the chapel of the residence but has since moved into neighboring spaces.

“We’ve had to keep expanding,” she said. “There are items in the chapel. The rotunda has puzzles and children’s items and jewelry. Our rec room has been taken over

by baked goods, and we had to move the food into the dining room.”

children’s programs of Luthercare, the parent organization of St. John’s Herr Estate.

the series features video clips of Redeeming Babel founding executive director Curtis Chang, New York Times columnist David French and Christianity Today editor-in-chief Russell Moore.

During the final four weeks of the fall season, beginning on Wednesday, Oct. 30, Lee C. Barrett from Lancaster Theological Seminary will talk further about how faith and theology shape politics. He will also suggest ways for Christians to support each other even when they disagree politically.

St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 2427 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, will host a talk about the Shroud of Turin on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 6:15 p.m. in the parish hall.

Bill Wingard will speak about the centuries-old cloth, which some people believe is the burial cloth of Jesus Christ. The shroud bears an image that first sparked interest over a century ago and continues to fuel debates among

scientists, historians, artists, and theologians. Wingard’s program was previously presented at other venues on the East and West coasts, including Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Attendees will have the opportunity to view a full-size replica of the shroud and photographic negative images that were made from it.
