SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954
VOL XXXVI • NO 26
Drawing Closer To A Cure BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
If there is a platinum lining to the cancellation of large in-person events, it is this: Moving events online allows anyone, anywhere in the world, to attend, provided they have an internet connection. Kelly Brazzo, co-founder and co-chair of the CureLGMD2i Foundation, has taken advantage of that opportunity in her plans for the 10th annual signature game night, which is the organization’s largest fundraising event. “People from all over the country are signing up,” Brazzo said. “The majority are people with the disease who haven’t been able to attend in the past because of travel limitations.” Brazzo predicted that more than 300 people will log on for the online event on Saturday, Oct. 24, rather than the usual 130 to 150 who have attended previous years’ events at Eden Resort and the Lancaster Elks. One of those people will be Dallas, Texas, resident Melissa Grove, who will serve as the master of ceremonies. Grove is a therapist and a professional
speaker with a background in theater arts. She also has limb-girdle muscular dystrophy type 2i (LGMD2i), a genetic condition that results in weakness and muscle wasting, particularly in the shoulder and hip areas. It is a progressive disease and can result in significant cardiovascular, respiratory, and overall physical complications. Grove was diagnosed at 18 and is now 52. She runs a $2 million nonprofit in North Texas but has begun making plans for her transition out of the organization. LGMD2i progression has meant that Grove has limited use of her arms and legs, and breathing is a challenge. Grove related that a barista once accidentally gave her a coffee one size larger than ordered. As Grove carried the beverage into the mall, she realized it was too heavy for her to hold. She had to stop every few steps to take a sip until it no longer strained her arm. “I’ve watched myself disintegrate. It’s a slow erosion of abilities - that’s what’s really tricky about it,” Grove commented. “Just the small things people take for granted (are difficult).” Grove and Brazzo, whose daughter
Samantha is a seventh-grader who also has LGMD2i, are excited that at least two treatments for LGMD2i have entered the human trial phase. “We always promised (Samantha) that by high school, we’d have a treatment for her,” Brazzo said. “We’re ahead of schedule now, if the treatment does what it promises to do.” CureLGMD2i has funded more than $600,000 in research projects, and with the announcement of clinical trials, the foundation has also begun to develop a travel fund that will cover the costs for people with LGMD2i, along with parents or aides as needed, to travel to testing sites and conferences. The foundation also hosts an annual LGMD2i conference in Iowa. “The research is very important because it’s what’s going to get us out of this, and the conference is important because it brings us together,” Grove remarked. “To be in the same room as someone with my exact same disease … is incredibly healing and important.” Grove is excited about the prospect of treatment options, and she hopes many

Bringing Food And More To Lancaster BY ANN MEAD ASH
INSIDE THIS ISSUE
Several years ago, Mike Mitchell, former owner of a discount market, was sitting in church when he had a vision of bringing closeout liquidated overstock merchandise and thrift store items together with groceries, fresh produce, dairy, frozen foods, and fresh meat. Mitchell thought, “If God brings me the right team to put this together, I can do this.” That team, which has brought just such a market to a food desert, with a population of 33,000 within a mile

Pautz noted that closeout items, including new clothing and shoes, priced at less than a third of the original retail. Outside, 40 free parking spaces are available. The store is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays. Pautz explained that the mission of Treasures Markets has several facets: first, to supply affordable food in a food desert; second, to make other items available in the store at reasonable prices and to keep those items out of the waste stream; and third, to offer jobs. “We are working with Water Street Mission’s (WSM) Step Up program,” said Pautz, adding that they received a grant to do job training. “We are working in that program to bring some folks over once they complete the program at Water Street.” Groff added that the organization is already working with a few men to do job training. But job training is not the only way the organization has partnered with WSM. “This is a social enterprise,” said

of the location, in Lancaster, includes vice president of development Pam Pautz, who has worked with area nonprofits; vice president of purchasing Mike Willig; and Ken Groff, vice president of store operations. Willig and Groff are both former Amelia’s employees with many years of experience. On June 30, that vision became a reality when Treasures Markets opened its flagship store located at 515 N. Franklin St., Lancaster, between the McDonald’s and McCaskey High School. The 30,000-square-foot building features a variety of groceries, including brand-name and locally produced food items, at discount prices on one side and merchandise ranging from jewelry and clothing to furniture and large appliances on the other. Willig pointed to the variety of food items neatly organized to the right of the store. “We wanted to give the local community access to the type of (grocery store) they don’t have access to in Lancaster City,” he said.

Pautz. “We created Treasures Markets as a benefit to Treasures of Hope Foundations, which is a 501(c)(3) with the sole intent to give the profits of this store back to the community it serves. This store is just a vehicle to fund the nonprofit.” WSM is one of the foundation’s main partners, and WSM will receive a large portion of the proceeds. However, Pautz explained that the goal is then to give funds to other nonprofits in Lancaster city that battle homelessness and food insecurity and help provide employment opportunities. “Eventually, there will be a grant process where local nonprofits will be able to apply for money,” she said. Treasures Markets could use volunteers at both the store and the organization’s warehouse at 1140 Enterprise Road, East Petersburg. “We need lots of volunteers at the warehouse and here for greeters, to sort donations, tagging, and dressing room attendants,” said Pautz, who directed those who are looking to volunteer to the organi-
zation’s website at www.treasuresmarkets.com. She noted that volunteer information includes a description of each job along with a chance to sign up online for the days they are available to help. Donations are also accepted at the warehouse. “We need donations of clothing, household goods, small appliances, and furniture,” said Pautz, who added that no appointment is necessary to make a donation. Donation hours may be found at the website. On one wall of the market are logos of organizations that have sponsored the market, including High Foundation, Fulton Bank, Ephrata National Bank, and Community Fellowship Church. The foundation launched a capital campaign in August to try to lower expenses at the store so that money can be invested into the community more quickly. “There’s room for more names on the wall,” said Pautz, who noted that those interested in donating may email ppautz@treasuresmarkets.com.
Closer To A Cure from pg 1 people will attend the Oct. 24 event to learn about LGMD2i. “Get to know some of the people you’re supporting actual people who are living with muscular dystrophy,” she invited. “They’re just living their lives and working their jobs and trying to stay afloat, but they’re doing it with a physical disease.” The games aspect of the Oct. 24 event will be minimal, but there will be a “Vegas” theme. The event will be hosted on Zoom from 7 to 9 p.m. and will include a virtual happy hour, an online auction, and prize drawings.
Additionally, an LGMD2i family with professional singers will perform, the new ambassadors will be announced, and pharmaceutical company representatives will speak about available clinical trials. There is no cost to attend the event, but registration is required. Sponsorships are available as well. To register to attend or to sponsor as well as to learn more about LGMD2i, readers may visit https://curelgmd2i.com. Readers with questions may email Brazzo at kbrazzo@curelgmd2i.org.
Outdoor Concert from pg 1 Attendees should bring their own own lawn chairs or blanket. Social distancing and masks are required. A freewill offering will be received. For further information, readers may call 717-2038662. In the case of rain, the event will take place on Sunday, Oct. 4.

Orchestra Posts Music Education Program In collaboration with Carnegie Hall, the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra is participating in the Link Up program The Orchestra Rocks, a music education program provided by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute (WMI), during the 2020-21 season. The nearly 5,500 students participating in Link Up will participate in a virtual culminating concert in May 2021 where they will sing and play the recorder or the violin with the orchestra from home. This performance often serves as students’ first concert experience and provides them with the opportunity to apply the musical concepts they have studied. For more than 30 years, Link Up has paired orchestras with students in grades three through five at schools in their local communities to
explore orchestral repertoire and fundamental musical skills, including creative work and composition, through a hands-on music curriculum. Link Up provides a free, yearlong curriculum that teachers can implement, along with classroom materials, online video and audio resources, and the professional development and support necessary to make the program an engaging experience for students. The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra is one of 120 national and international organizations chosen for this program. Since 2003, Carnegie Hall has partnered with professional, community, and university orchestras across the U.S. and around the world to support their existing education programs and strengthen their partner-

St. John Neumann Catholic School marked the first day in its new Education Center addition at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Lancaster after relocating from St. Anne School in downtown Lancaster. Designed by Lancaster architectural firm Hammel Associates Architects LLC, the addition and renovations to the parish buildings were completed by Wohlsen. The project provided the Catholic education facility with nine additional classrooms, restrooms, and office support spaces. Upgrades to the west portion of the church building are designed to support the education facilities and increase security and accessibility. Select renovations to the church continue and are scheduled for completion by the end of September. A special event to celebrate the project’s completion is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 24.

The Lancaster County Community Foundation, in partnership with the United Way of Lancaster County, has awarded the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA) Lancaster Center with a $3,500 grant to assist with the Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR) surgeries of community cats in Lancaster. The funds are being put into action immediately to provide free spay and neuter surgery for community cats in the Lancaster area. Upon usage of the grant funds, TNR surgeries will continue at the PSPCA Lancaster Center for a set amount. TNR involves the humane trapping of feral cats, bringing them to a veterinarian to be altered and vaccinated and, after recovery, returning them to their outdoor homes. TNR aims to reduce the number of stray cats over time; relieve cats of the constant
stresses of mating and pregnancy; reduce mating behaviors such as roaming, yowling, spraying and fighting; improve cats’ physical health; and provide necessary vaccinations including those for rabies and feline viruses, rhinotracheitis, calicivirus and panleukopenia (FVRCP). TNR can also help protect the local wild bird population. The TNR services provided at the PSPCA Lancaster Center will include the spay/neuter surgery, rabies and FVRCP vaccines, ear tipping to denote the cat has been altered and vaccinated, flea and tick treatment, ear mite treatment and ear cleaning. TNR services will be scheduled on Thursdays through October or until the grant funding is used, serving 15 cats each week. Traps will be available to rent for a set fee at the PSPCA Lancaster Center. Upon return of the trap, most of the fee will be refunded. Community members who would like to take part in the TNR effort for cats throughout the region may email lancaster@pspca.org to schedule an appointment.

teers followed all CDC regulations and guidelines, such as social distancing, for this project. Following completion of the gardening, Donegal provided lunch for volunteers and Lancaster EMS administrative staff and first responders.
