Mr. Ice Cream Kid featured at business conference

If you are a resident of the Landisville area, you are likely familiar with 13-year-old entrepreneur Bennett Dufrene, better known in the local community as Mr. Ice Cream Kid. With the help of his father, Bernie Dufrene, and a custom-made mobility scooter equipped with a cooler to store frozen treats, Bennett sells ice cream at local events and in area neighborhoods on hot summer days. Bennett was selected as a finalist in the Pitch the Pros celebrity judging contest at the Alibaba CoCreate manufacturing conference, which took place on Sept. 6 at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas.

During the conference, Bennett

and Bernie delivered a 90-second pitch to a panel of celebrity judges, including Daymond John from “Shark Tank,” Kickstarter CEO Everette Taylor, Mawer Capital CEO Rudy Mawer, Jason Feifer of Entrepreneur magazine, Socialfly CEO and co-founder Courtney Spritzer and Carmine Denisco, co-founder of Inventors Launchpad. The pitch showcased Bennett and Bernie’s plan to expand the Mr. Ice Cream brand by selling DelightBike, the custom-made scooter Bennett uses to sell ice cream, to aspiring young entrepreneurs.

Bennett began selling ice cream five years ago. At first, he used an ice cooler to store his products, but Bennett often had to throw away melted ice

cream that sat in the cooler too long. Since traditional ice cream bikes were bulky and dangerous for a child to operate, Bernie partnered with a manufacturer to modify an electric mobility scooter with a lightweight cooler Bennett could drive in stadiums, nursing homes and hospitals, as well as at outdoor events, with ease. “Bennett wants to offer DelightBike to the world,” Bernie said. “If people are interested in buying their own bike, we’ve worked with the manufacturer to produce and ship them.” Buyers of the DelightBike will have an option to purchase a branded or unbranded version of the bike through the manufacturer. Bernie first learned about the conference through his job, and

This year, Hempfield High School’s theme is “All In.” The theme highlights the dedication of students and staff members alike who go above and beyond, dedicating themselves to anything from academics to enrichment activities. Christian nonprofit organization American Home Life International (AHLI) began decades ago with the dream of Marvin and Ruth Powers, a newlywed couple from Lancaster that wished to serve side by side as missionaries overseas. Although their initial dream of evangelism abroad was never realized, Marvin and Ruth hosted their first international student in

1972. More than fifty years later, AHLI has served thousands of students from around the globe, and it continues to help them find host families throughout the United States.

AHLI’s mission statement is to “provide quality education programs to international students in the safe, caring environment of Christian host families where they will experience the love of Christ.” Nicole Bianchi, a resident of West Lampeter, is an

LCCF’s Elevating the Next Generation event will connect past with future

Young people are ambassadors for what Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) stands for.

The next major event in LCCF’s yearlong celebration of its 100th anniversary will focus on the future and empowering youths. It’s a great way to start the next hundred years.

ing ahead is being called Elevating the Next Generation. It’s being staged in multiple rooms of Millersville University’s student center, 21 S. George St., Millersville, from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Mr. Ice Cream Kid

he had already planned to attend the event to learn about international manufacturing. After seeing an advertisement for the Pitch the Pros event, Bernie and Bennett submitted an application to participate. Bennett was quickly selected as a finalist, and the event organizers asked if he would be able to bring his DelightBike to ride onstage and mingle with the audience after the conference.

Open to the public and free to the attend, the event is geared toward young people from middle school all the way through college age.

“We’re excited about this event,” said Schade. “The goal is to invite and inspire the Lancaster County community to think about how important the next generation is. It’s youth-centered and youth-designed, but it’s not only for youth. It’s meant to be energetic and casual.”

“Young people are the future,” said Val Schade, who’s been LCCF’s communications manager for three years. “We believe if we embolden children and young adults, we are all impacted. We’re taking an opportunity to look back, while looking ahead. Thanks to the past 100 years that saw opportunities for several generations, we are a community brimming with promise. We think it’s our turn to make history and change the next 100 years.”

LCCF’s evening of look-

LCCF’s Elevating the Next Generation event will feature food trucks, a gaming truck with over 100 games, a wellness room with interactive and mindful activities and a performance by the Crispus Attucks Community Center’s drill team and band squad, the Infamous Unstoppables. In addition, the event will include a session on food sustainability, displays of student artwork and poetry readings.

Although Bernie and Bennett have used a trailer to transport the bike to local events in the past, this was the first time they had to ship it to another state.

The father-and-son duo had five days to build a crate and ship the DelightBike to Las Vegas in time for the event.

After the pitch, Bennett and Bernie spoke with Mawer, who gave them advice on potential upgrades for the DelightBike. During the trip, Ben-

nett and his father also visited Grand Canyon National Park and saw exotic cars up close, and Bennett became an undefeated go-kart racer. “The go-karts went up to 45 miles per hour, and I won all three times,” Bennett said, adding that he attributes his driving prowess to watching clips of professional racecar driver Max Verstappen.

celebration by participating in a full roster of upcoming events.

The high school will kick off its homecoming festivities with the annual fall fling on Wednesday, Sept. 25, during the school day. Akin to a pep rally, the fall fling will take place at the stadium on campus, and it will feature a presentation and various outdoor activities for students to participate in as they socialize and promote school spirit. Representatives of the National Guard and multiple school clubs will be in attendance. At 7 p.m., juniors and seniors will compete in the traditional flag football game at the stadium, and the homecoming king will be crowned at halftime.

On Friday, Sept. 27, Hempfield High School’s National Honor Society (NHS) chapter will offer tours of the building to alumni from 5 to 6 p.m. beginning in the performing arts center. At 7 p.m., the football team will face off against Penn Manor High School during the homecoming football game at Georgelis Law Firm Stadium. The homecoming queen will be crowned at halftime.

This year’s homecoming court includes students Alex Gregory, Kacey Klinger, Addie Leber, Julianna Kreider, Evy Sahd, Simeon Vieland, Cole Pham, Ty Myers, David Ennis and Cole Gibbons. The final round of voting to decide the homecoming king and queen will close on Sept. 25 prior to the flag football game.

At 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, the school will hold the Hempfield Homecoming Parade. The

parade will start on Stanley Avenue in Landisville near the entrance of the high school, following a route through the surrounding neighborhoods before the procession concludes in the parking lot of the quad on campus. The parade will feature Hempfield High School’s marching band, homecoming court and sports teams, in addition to police officers and firefighters from local police departments and fire stations. Refreshments will be available to purchase from food trucks in the quad parking lot after the parade.

In 2023, the school held its first homecoming parade in more than 20 years. Until the 1980s, the high school held an annual parade that featured a specific theme and various floats.

After the school’s marching band began holding a parade a few years ago, members of the Student Council decided to expand the event to include sports teams and local first responders in an effort to resurrect the former tradition.

“When you go to a college homecoming, they have activities designed to connect people back to their school. We’re trying to make homecoming about not just the students here, but alumni and the community as well to show off all the amazing things Hempfield does and how involved our students are,” said Bill Brossman, principal of Hempfield High School.

“They’re the ones doing the hard work, showing up every day and striving for excellence. Our students are all-in.”

Author to speak about clockmaker

Historic Rock Ford will host a presentation by Bob Frishman, author of “Edward Duffield: Philadelphia Clockmaker, Citizen, Gentleman, 17301803,” on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m. The program will be held in the Langmuir Education Room located on the first floor of the Rock Ford Barn, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster.

Frishman will present a historical overview of Edward Duffield, who was far more than a clockmaker in 18th-century Philadelphia. Duffield made, repaired, and sold floor-standing clocks, surveying instruments, and sundials that today are in museums and private collections, and he was also a wealthy property owner and active civic and Anglican Church leader. He was also a lifelong friend of Benjamin Franklin and served as executor of Franklin’s estate. Frishman’s presentation will be supplemented with more than 100 images from his newly released comprehensive biography of Duffield, which addresses all aspects of the clockmaker’s life and the practice of clockmaking in Colonial America.

After his presentation, Frishman will have a question-and-answer session and book signing.

Frishman lives in Andover, Mass., and is a Silver Star Fellow of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors. He has lectured at more than 100 places, including Winterthur Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Henry Ford Museum, the Museum of the American Revolution, and the Horological Society of New York. Additional biographical information may be found at www.historicrockford. org.

The presentation is free of charge, but all guests are required to register at http://rockford.yapsody.com due to space restrictions.

Bob Frishman displays a copy of his book on Edward Duffield.

Church to host Polka Mass

Christ Lutheran Church, 2 W. Strawberry St., Lancaster, will hold its annual Polka Mass on Sunday, Sept. 29, at 9 a.m. in the church sanctuary. The church honors its anniversary yearly with a Polka Mass led by the Heidelberg Brass Band under the direction of the Rev. Glenn Beard.

The Polka Mass combines the Lutheran liturgical worship service in a respectful way with popular waltz and polka tunes.

All are invited to share in the service of worship and praise, which will be followed by a fellowship time in the adjacent church parlor.

The church is located at the corner of Manor and West Strawberry streets in Lancaster, with parking available in the lot behind the church on Lafayette Street.

AHLI coordinator. Bianchi’s job is to locate families in the community that wish to open their homes to students, visiting the potential hosts to make sure they will be a good fit. “I love my job. The kinds of families that open up their homes are usually incredible people,” Bianchi said. “Every time I leave a home, I’m blown away by the heart of the community.”

Bianchi’s experience with AHLI began when she was 6 years old, after her parents had decided to host students through the organization. “It was just a part of our normal family culture,” said Bianchi. “I even went to Japan to visit a student who I consider a sister to me.”

After graduating high school, Bianchi married a professional baseball player whose career required them to travel frequently. Bianchi and her husband lived with AHLI host families until his retirement, and they decided to become a host family themselves after returning to Lancaster. Bianchi has hosted students from various

countries in Europe and Asia, and she is currently hosting a student from China. As a coordinator, Bianchi meets with visiting students once per month to check in and share a fun activity.

“I had such a passion for (AHLI) from hosting,” Bianchi said. “I feel like it does things really well, putting kids in safe, caring homes while they get an education in Lancaster.” Although Bianchi is based in West Lampeter, host families can be located anywhere in the county.

In addition to providing international students with a safe environment to receive an education, Bianchi said AHLI allows families a paid opportunity to learn about other cultures.

“People think it’s going to be like having another kid, but it really ends up being a blessing,” added Bianchi.

“Parents already have to make dinner, and every

day our student will tell us about his culture, which is good for my kids to hear about.”

Program to focus on ABLE accounts

Individuals receiving government benefits often have limits on how much money they can save before their benefits are affected.

But these limits make it difficult to save for housing, a car or educational or other goals. ABLE accounts, which are tax-advantaged savings accounts that can fund disability-related expenses, were created to assist individuals with disabilities to overcome these barriers.

Hope Served will host an ABLE account community training program with Diana Fishlock from the

Pennsylvania Treasury Department on Thursday, Sept. 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. Attendees will learn who is eligible for the accounts, how to open an account and how to utilize an ABLE account for the benefit of themselves or a loved one. Fishlock is one of Pennsylvania’s main experts on the topic. The training will be held at Hope Served’s offices at 201 W. High St., Manheim.

To register, contact Rachelle at office@hopeserved .org or 717-347-9785 to ensure adequate seating and refreshments.

Nicole Bianchi (far left) and her children frequently host international students through Christian nonprofit American Home Life International.
Bennett Bianchi (far left), Novella Bianchi (second from left) and Josie Bianchi (far right) are learning about Chinese culture from Erica Yin (second from right), whom the Bianchi family is hosting via American Home Life International.

Rock, mineral and fossil auction posted

Boltz Auction Company, 3601 Columbia Ave., Lancaster, has announced the upcoming auction of the rock, mineral and fossil collection of Jim and Mimi Stauffer. An in-person and online auction will take place on Saturday, Oct. 12, at 10 a.m.

In addition to the live auction, Boltz Auction Company will facilitate two online auctions, offering

additional opportunities to view and bid on select items from the collection. The first online auction will close on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. The second online auction will close on Friday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m.

Previews are scheduled by appointment. For more information and to schedule an appointment, call 717-392-4257.

Also, the next round of recipients of LCCF’s Shaping Tomorrow awards and scholarships will be announced that evening.

“We’re hoping for a large turnout,” said Schade. “We recognize that if the event is open to young people that they’re going to be accompanied by family. It’s youth and family friendly.”

Elevating the Next Generation is the third of four events LCCF is conducting to commemorate its founding in 1924. The first two were staged at Rock Lititz in March and at Buchanan Park in April, and the fourth, titled Protecting Our Planet, will be held at

the Farm at Eagles Ridge on Thursday, Oct. 17.

“Lancaster County Community Foundation stewards the county endowment, and we harness the power of community and local philanthropy to make Lancaster a better place to live,” said Schade. “We are here because of the work and hope and vision of people who came before us. Our mission is to work for the people who are coming after us, for generations to come.”

Over the last century, LCCF has donated more than $60 million to local causes. LCCF’s signature event, ExtraGive, has generated more than $100 million in donations for local organizations.

“Lancaster has always been a county of change-makers and hard workers,” said Schade. “The endowment has always been shaped by community members with that in mind. The beautiful thing about the endowment is it can be flexible and that it can be used to meet needs in the moment.”

For additional information about the Lancaster County Community Foundation, go to www.lanc found.org.

Two young people represent McCaskey High School at an LCCF community outreach event earlier this year.
