Keeping A Steady Hand At The Helm New Headmaster Takes Charge At Dayspring BY ANN MEAD ASH

Michael Myers, founder of and Vision Ambassador for Dayspring Christian Academy in Mountville, knew a time would come when he would step out of his role as headmaster. “We wanted a hand-inglove type of transition because of

anonized in 1161, Saint Edward the Confessor was one of the last Anglo-Saxon kings of England. He reigned from 1042 to 1066. Centuries later, in 1981, St. Edward’s Episcopal Church was formed in East Hempfield Township. With 120 people in attendance, the first service of the newly formed mission was held on Sept. 13, 1981, at the International Molders and Allied Workers Union Hall, located at 921 Nissley Road, Lancaster. The construction of the present church building at 2453 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, occurred between 1984 and 1990. The groundbreaking service was held on March 5, 1989. To meet the demands of a growing community, a new parish hall was built in 2005. On Sept. 12, St. Edward’s Episcopal Church celebrated 40 years of serving the East Hempfield Township community. The event began

Stephen C. Casey, who served as a rector of the church for 20 years until 2008. Casey died this past January due to complications from COVID-19. Memorial projects donated to the church in honor of Casey will be completed over the next few months. A brand-new organ will be delivered and a stained-glass piece of the Sea of Galilee will be installed. “We will see the fruits of Stephen Casey’s memory coming to play in special gifts given by people who want to remember him in a way that is permanent in the church,” explained Bauer. Bauer mentioned that he wants the community to know that St. Edward’s is a welcoming place. He said the congregation proclaims a loving and merciful God and does not leave anyone out. around 10 a.m. with a service led by the Rev. Richard C. Bauer and two prior rectors of St. Edward’s: the Rev. Timothy K. Small and the Rev. Aaron B. Zull. The service was followed by a lunch outside while a jazz trio performed. Bauer noted that more than 125 people attended the event. “I mean, I was pretty blown away,” stated Bauer. “It was the first time since I (became rector at St. Edward’s) at the beginning of COVID where we had that many of our parishioners together. Our sanctuary was whole. It was really special.” There are 10 episcopal churches in the Lancaster convocation, and the oldest turns 300 this year. “In a way, (St. Edward’s) is still being born,” said Bauer. “ We are the youngest in our convocation. We are continuing to work together to build something special.” A chair was kept empty during the lunch in honor of the late Rev.

the specificity of our vision with a Principle Approach school,” said Myers. “It’s so ingrained in every part (of what we do).” According to Myers, many years ago, the organization’s board identified longtime staff member Dan Stone as a likely candidate. “(They) gave him experiences to lead him to the place that he would be ready (to move into the position),” said Myers. Earlier this summer, Stone officially transitioned to headmaster. Stone joined the Dayspring team as a history teacher in 2004, and, almost immediately, he was leading field studies, coaching baseball and soccer, and taking on administrative duties, eventually moving into the position of athletic director. Stone grew up in the South, the son of a Christian school administrator. “I knew from my high school years that I felt the Lord calling me to work with young people,

You’re Invited To Sing “Messiah” BY CATHY MOLITORIS

When Handel composed “Messiah” in the 1740s, he wanted it to be performed as a concert, said Tom Berdos, director of music at Chiques United Methodist Church (UMC) in Mount Joy. With that desire in mind, Berdos is inviting singers in the Mount Joy area to join him for a performance of the piece in December. Rehearsals will be held on Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. at the church, 1215 E. Main St., beginning on Oct. 6.

“This is a new and unique opportunity for this community,” said Berdos, who has been conducting “Messiah” for about 20 years at other locations. “I do it for the glory of God, and it gives people the opportunity to sing this wonderful piece of music.” Berdos is looking for all voice parts for the concert, which will be presented with a full orchestra he assembled and will run about 70 minutes. He noted that the church can accommodate up to 90 singers and that people have returned year after year to perform the piece. In

2018, he held the concert in the metro New York area of New Jersey, and a group from there will Zoom in for rehearsals and perform live at the December concert. Berdos said he does not hold auditions for the performance, but rather leaves it up to people to know their voice part and capabilities. “Some people come to the first or second rehearsal and think, ‘I’m not sure I can do this,’ but I encourage them to keep coming back,” he stated. “It’s a real sense of accomplishment when it all comes together.”

Junior Air Rifle Program Promotes Marksmanship BY CATHY MOLITORIS

The Junior Air Rifle program is looking for participants who want to learn gun safety and marksmanship in a friendly and relaxed environment. The program will be held at the Mount Joy Sportsmen’s Association, 85 Range Road, beginning on Saturday, Oct. 9. The classes will run through Saturday, Dec. 18, and will begin at 9 a.m. “We hope (participants) have a good time, learn safe gun handling and proper respect for guns and perhaps decide to make this a longerterm activity,” said instructor Tom Amlie. “If nothing else, familiarity with shooting air rifles should take some of the mystery and fear out of the idea of guns and shooting.” As Amlie explained, air rifles propel a projectile, either a pellet or BB, by compressed air or by a spring rather than by gunpowder. “Air rifles can range from the spring-powered Daisy Red Ryder up to Olympic-quality air rifles, which use pre-compressed air and cost several thousand dollars,” he stated. The program is open to any youth age 9 and older, and it begins with an extensive safety orientation for all participants, even those who have shot with the club previously. “On the first day, we shoot at larger air pistol targets, shooting off of supports,” Amlie stated. “This lets the shooters concentrate on sight picture and trigger control. The more forgiving air pistol targets also provide some better positive reinforcement on that first day.” As the course progresses, the targets become more difficult, and students may advance to unsupported shooting in a prone position.

Amlie, who has been running the program for two years, said he enjoyed marksmanship activities when he was a teenager. “Air rifles … provide a safe, inexpensive, low-key introduction to the shooting sports,” he remarked. “Some of the local high schools have air rifle programs, so this also provides a nice background in case anyone wants to get involved with their school team.” The air rifle program offers an opportunity to try something new and hone skills, he stated, adding, “Shooting is a sport where competing against yourself and seeing improvement is as or more important than competing against others. Although we track the shooters’ averages from week to week, we focus more on the improvements from week to week rather than ranking shooters.” He noted that he also likes to emphasize the longevity of the sport. “I always point out to our shooters that marksmanship activities can be a lifetime activity, irrespective of age or gender,” he said. “One of the oldest Olympic athletes ever was a free pistol shooter Ragnar Skanaker, who took the bronze medal in 1992 at the age of 58 - while the overall champion of the NRA National High Power Rifle Championship in 2021 was a young lady from Harleysville.” Club rifles and eye protection are available for participants, and parents are encouraged to stay and assist or observe. There is a small fee for participation. For more information or to register, contact Amlie at 717-3424484 or tta2@psu.edu.

Participants in the Junior Air Rifle program learn gun safety and marksmanship.

but I didn’t know in what capacity,” said Stone, who decided to go into education at Liberty University. Stone dabbled in theater at Liberty, and one summer, he auditioned to take part in “Daniel” at Sight & Sound. There he met a young woman named Julie, who was a member of the first graduating class at Dayspring. The pair became engaged, and after they married, Stone came to Lancaster County and went to work at Dayspring. “I really enjoyed teaching, but I also enjoyed leadership, helping people, and getting things done,” said Stone, who earned a master’s degree in administration from Clarks Summit University in Scranton in 2017. Dayspring was founded by Myers in 1987 after a career as a public school teacher and after learning about the Principle Approach, which focuses on the classical method of education that works to develop excellence in academics and character with the aim of restoring America’s biblical foundation. The school quickly outgrew its first home, and it was located in several Lancaster County buildings over the years before moving to its current home at 120 College Ave., Mountville, in 2010.

Myers was watching for a successor to carry on his vision. “Early on I felt in my heart that Dan might be the man,” he said. “I wanted to hand this off to someone I really had confidence in.” In his new role, Stone began meeting with staff and faculty during the summer to focus on Principle Approach training. “We did a whole session on quality control,” Stone explained, noting that the group looked at the specifics of the Principle Approach and how they were being implemented at each level of the school. “We talked about continuing to be distinctive in our methodology and our philosophy … what makes us unique.” Myers will continue to be involved as he shepherds the school through the process of constructing a new school building on land in the Mountville area. He is also working part-time for the Foundation for American Christian Education. “My role is to help with startups and transitioning to Principle Approach schools,” he said. “There is a great awakening coming in Christian education.” More information about Dayspring may be found at www.dayspringchristian.com.

There will be a short service and blessing. The service will celebrate and give thanks for pets and all God’s creatures. Lancaster City’s Mounted and K-9 units will be on hand for the event. Donations will be accepted for the Pennsylvania SPCA, which provides local shelter and adoption opportunities for dogs and cats. Pets in attendance should be leashed or in a cage or carrier. Attendees may bring a picture of their pet for blessing if they feel that bringing the pet to the event would be too stressful. Toy pets are welcome, too. All human participants are required to wear a mask and practice social distancing during the gathering. For more information, call St. John’s Episcopal Church at 717-299-1188 or visit https://stjohns-lancaster.org/.

a volunteer court-appointed special advocate, she realized that in many cases, the teen mothers were as much victims as their children. With the help of several advisers in the social work and psychology fields, Abel started Second Grace to provide a nonjudgmental mentoring program to guide the teen mothers on the path to success. The Artisan Fall Festival will follow state and federal guidelines regarding COVID-19 safety measures. For more information, visit www.secondgrace.org.

The rehearsals are also an opportunity to make friends and connect with others in the community, he noted, adding, “I’ve had singers tell me it’s a life-changing experience to participate. They work so hard as a team, and we really bond.” Berdos emphasized the choir consists of people of all faiths, and it includes a range of ages and backgrounds. “We have at least three teenagers and at least three people who are in their 80s, so it’s a multigenerational experience,” he said. “I would love to have people who were members of their church choir, but maybe their church doesn’t have a choir anymore.” Berdos has been the music director at Chiques UMC since June, where his wife, Deborah, is the organist. She will accompany rehearsals and sing soprano in the concert. Performing “Messiah” is an opportunity to take on a difficult piece of music, and it’s an expression of faith, Berdos said. “It’s a worship experience to conduct this piece and to sing it,” he remarked. “How can you participate with this and not feel that you’re giving to the Lord?”
