Vocal Harmonix Slates Virtual Open House BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

Women who enjoy singing are invited to attend a virtual open house hosted by women’s a capella show chorus Vocal Harmonix, the Lancaster chapter of Sweet Adelines (SA) International, on Monday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. The approximately 75-minute “mini-class” will showcase what the barbershop craft is about and provide some history and insight into Vocal Harmonix, formerly known as Red Rose City Chorus. Prior to the March shutdown, the group rehearsed at Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster. Since then, rehearsals have been held via Zoom. On Oct. 26, guests will get a look into what a typical “Zoomhearsal” looks like and will be able to view videos of performances by the award-winning chorus.

How exactly does a choir rehearsal take place via video conferencing? With some flexibility, Vocal Harmonix member Julie Pedelini explained. “It is not perfect, but we are making the best of it. Obviously, we have not been able to be together in person since March, but it was important to us that we keep the social connection and be able to continue our learning and singing, even if we are remote from each other,” she said. “Although we can sing ‘together,’ we obviously cannot hear all of us at once and hear the ringing harmony as if we were in the same room. We typically sing against some of our pre-recorded performances, and we also have learning tracks we can sing against.” The group had been recording its in-person rehearsals in order to fine tune the finished songs. Those recordings are now proving helpful

Gardner’s Mattress & More is celebrating 30 years of serving Lancaster County. The business was founded as Gardner’s Bedrooms in 1990 by Jim Gardner, who sold it to Ben McClure and Jeff Giagnocavo when he retired in 2010. McClure and Giagnocavo met as buyer and seller 18 years ago. Giagnocavo was a sales representative, selling products to Gardner’s Bedrooms, and McClure was the showroom and selling manager. When Gardner retired, the two younger men decided to form a partnership to buy the business, pledging a commitment to five-star service, experience, and products for their customers. Together, Giagnocavo and McClure have written buying guides, hosted seminars, and held events to connect with the community and educate the public on

the ways Gardner’s Mattress & More can meet individuals’ sleep needs. The business partners introduced the Dream Room and customer lounge shopping concepts, and they give back to the community with the Gardner’s Gives Back food drive. Gardner’s Mattress & More has won 11 consecutive Reader’s Choice Awards for Lancaster’s Favorite Mattress Store. In February, Giagnocavo published “Sleep Better,” and free copies may be obtained by stopping by the store, 830 Plaza Blvd., Lancaster, during October. “It’s the culmination of

his experience and knowledge base and clearly identifies where people struggle to get quality sleep and how we might be able to help them in our store,” McClure commented. “Of course, nothing in the book was written in a vacuum,” Giagnocavo added. “We succeed together as a team, and at Gardner’s, I’m the abrupt, hard-charging personality in the company, always pushing to do better. Along the way, Ben’s steady demeanor, customer service, and leadership skills have been a perfect fit with my skills of marketing and customer experience touch

points. There is no way each of us reaches this point in time alone. Our company and our customers are truly better with us working together.” The three decades of Gardner’s existence have seen ebbs and flows in the mattress business. Waterbeds surged in popularity, then plateaued, before nearly disappearing. Gardner’s was the first Lancaster County retailer to carry the novel TempurPedic offerings, beginning in 2002. The two-sided, flippable mattress design fell out of vogue, but it has returned full force, and more than 25 models are displayed in Gardner’s showroom. The last five years have been turbulent in the mattress world, with direct-toconsumer offerings increasing in number and options. The online companies’ return policies prompted Gardner’s to take another look at its customer exchange service, creat-

ing its Wake Up Happy Comfort Guarantee, which says, “If you don’t love your mattress, we’ll exchange it for one you do love, with no fees, costs, or delivery charges.” Buying mattresses is a highly subjective process, Giagnocavo explained. “We can offer, spec for spec, the highest quality mattresses at each price point possible, and yet, when we put 10 people on any one mattress, we will get 10 very different opinions,” he said. “Our bodies are all built differently, and we all have unique aches and pains along with some having intense medical issues. While we aren’t doctors and don’t pretend to be, everything we demonstrate and discuss with our customers can be felt and experienced by them in a positive way in which they feel better. That’s our job, (to) discover how our sleep systems fit your needs.” McClure noted that Gardner’s strives to give customers

positive experiences. Buying mattresses is important and can best be selected by shopping in-person at the right store, he asserted. “The fact that seven days a week any one of our customers can visit us means we are always actively working to help our customers wake up happy and earn a five-star review from them,” McClure said. The Gardner’s team has developed a simple process devoid of buy-it-today high pressure and dubious sales tactics. “You’ll see us out and about in town. Our faces are on the side of the truck,” Giagnocavo said. “This is our company, and every action is a positive representation of who we are as people and our commitment to helping our neighbors be happier, healthier, and more productive.” Giagnocavo and McClure each have children, who sometimes help to unload trucks or sweep the store, so the business partners hope that Gardner’s may stay in the family and continue to be a meaningful part of Lancaster County residents’ lives. To celebrate the 30th anniversary during October, Gardner’s is offering “30 Days of Prizes & Gifts.” Readers may learn more by visiting the store or www.Gardners MattressAndMore.com/sales.

The next fundraiser will be held on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Ethiopian Evangelical Church in Lancaster (EECL), 175 Church St., Landisville. Guests should enter the church property from Camp Meeting Road and exit onto Church Street. The meal will be held as takeout only. In lieu of a set price, donations will be accepted. The last fundraiser, held on Sept. 12, was so popular that Siloam Ethiopia co-founder and kitchen coordinator Wegayhu Ketema had to cook more food, and supplies were exhausted in under two hours. Ketema is planning to prepare even larger quantities for the upcoming meal.

The proceeds from this fundraiser will be added to the $4,000 raised through last month’s meal and put toward the purchase of a machine used to test blood chemistry levels. Siloam Ethiopia cofounder Demeke Getahun, who is married to Ketema and is the pastor at EECL, noted that the organization, which founded and operates a free health clinic providing urgent and routine medical care in Harar, Ethiopia, will get the machine for a reduced price. “It is more than $30,000, but as a nonprofit, we will get it for $25,000,” Getahun said. “It is very expensive equipment.” Having blood testing equipment on-site at the clinic is in part a requirement by the Ethiopian government. It is also a service to clients, most of whom cannot afford to travel

Knights Battle Undefeated Blue Streaks

The Knights’ Sophia Kambouroglos fends off Manheim Township’s Anika Krasnai as she hustles to the ball in last Tuesday’s Section One battle in Neffsville. BY ARA GRIGORIAN

Playing their arch rivals on the road in a Tuesday afternoon girls’ soccer match, the Black Knights came up short at Manheim Township in a 2-0 final. The undefeated Blue Streaks, who had allowed only one goal per game in their first four matches, improved to 40 in the Lancaster-Lebanon League (5-0 overall) while the Knights fell to 1-2-1 (2-2-1). The scoring tandem of Jane Bowen and Caroline Wood lifted the Streaks with Wood assisting on both of Bowen’s goals - 4:00 into the match and again in the 77th minute. Hempfield goalie Emily Antesberger grabbed six saves between those two scores. BOYS’ SOCCER In a tight battle for the top spot in Section One, the Black Knights blanked section rival Manheim Township on Tuesday at Landisville. The victory raised Hempfield’s record to 3-1-0 in the L-L League (3-2-0 overall). Township fell to 3-1-0 (4-2-0)

while Conestoga Valley remained in first (3-0-0). Hempfield head coach Mark Ashley spoke of the strategy used against a Township team which had outscored opponents 19-3 coming into this match. “The fact that they had outscored their opponents by a lot, we took a defensive approach and were looking to counter attack,” Ashley explained. “We created a couple of dangerous opportunities in addition to our two goals.” The first of those two goals came off the foot of Ethan Keitel less than 10 minutes into the match. Nathan Leisure made it a more comfortable cushion in the 66th minute with Nate Schwartz and Hunter Green assisting. “Nate received a really nice pass as a result of good combination passing from the midfield,” Ashley described. “Nate Stoltzfus passed it out to Hunter Green, who passed it from the right wing to Nate Schwartz, who then

passed it into the middle. Nate Leisure was able to play the ball near the penalty spot - turn and strike it into the side netting.” Never to be forgotten in a shutout is the effort by the defense and a goalkeeper. Noah Felty came through with 11 saves for a huge shutout. “Noah played without a doubt his best game ever,” Ashley remarked. “He made some great saves and kept us in the match. His timing and positioning were excellent. He held all the shots that came into him. “We got a little help from the woodwork too,” continued the coach. “It’s always nice to get breaks like that.” Township actually out-shot the Knights in this match, 11-5. But the hustle, the defense and midfield play helped Hempfield earn the most important stat. “Statistically they outplayed us with more shots and corners,” Ashley noted. “I would say they had the better of the possession as well. I was impressed with our hustle, and how we won the head balls and 50/50 balls.” Also important to note was the job done by Luke Kramer, who was assigned to Township’s leading goal scorer. “Luke’s job was to shut down Moses Beers,” Ashley explained. Beers came into the game with five goals and an assist on the year. He did a nice job minimizing his chances.” Hempfield improved its league mark to 4-1-0 with a Section One win at home over Cedar Crest on Thursday. “We had good passing, good possession, good defending and

unselfish teamwork,” said Ashley. Green, who tallied two goals, scored the first goal of the game off a corner from Leisure. Leisure, Keitel, Schwartz and sophomore Cannon Biscoe scored also. Kramer, Fausten Mucunguzi, Mason Orth, and Zach Antesberger earned assists while Felty and Tyler Enge each made one save. CROSS COUNTRY In a competitive race at Warwick, the Hempfield girls’ cross country team topped the host school 19-36 and improved to 42 on the year. Hannah Kilheffer’s time of 20:51 was the fastest for the Knights as she finished eighth overall. Molly Siebert (21:08) claimed 10th place. Right behind her was senior Lily Williams at 21:17 (11th place). Isabel Smith’s time of 21:35 earned her 13th overall. The boys’ team edged McCaskey 25-32 and downed Warwick 15-50, improving to 7-0 in Section One on Tuesday. With Aidan Hodge (16:49) and Evan Eshleman (16:50) taking second and third, respectively, and with strong finishes by Dale Winand (17:03, fifth) and Joe Fahrney (17:12, sixth), the Knights demonstrated their strength on the course. Finishing ninth in the race was David Jackson at 17:55. He was the first of a quintet that also included Sam Freedman (17:56, 10th), Chris Titter (18:09, 11th), Isaiah Hollinger (18:10, 12th), and Ryan French (18:16, 13th). ues to put away the competition. The Black Knights improved to 40 on the year with victories over Manheim Township and Penn Manor this past week. Against Manor, played on the road Tuesday evening, the only set given up by Hempfield happened in a 3-1 victory. Each of the previous three matches ended 3-0, including Monday’s match at Manheim Township. The Comets picked up momentum in the third set, outlasting the Knights 26-24. In the fourth set, the Knights eked out a 25-20 win after having won the first two sets, 25-16 and 25-11. Emma Bitner distributed 20 assists for Hempfield while Allison Cummings led the team with 14 digs. Emily James served up three aces and Joslene Morgan registered five blocks. The Comets fell to 2-4. The Township match began

with two 25-18 victories followed by a 25-17 set to complete the sweep. Morgan and James each put down seven kills with Morgan also recording a block. Cummings came through with four aces and 11 digs while Bitner had another 20 assist match. FIELD HOCKEY Two days following their Monday afternoon 4-0 loss to Penn Manor, the Black Knights traveled to Manheim Township for another Section One field hockey match. Hempfield’s fourth-quarter comeback bid - a goal by Karlly Bervinchak at the 13:58 mark landed one goal short in a 3-2 loss. The Knights fell to 1-5 in the L-L (1-6 overall). Keira Boensch also netted a goal, scoring for Hempfield in the first quarter. Goalie Eryn Murphy tallied six saves.

MERCHANDISER - Hempfield Edition - October 14, 2020 - 11

Local Physical Therapists Speak At Conference Falls Prevention Awareness Week was held from Sept. 21 to 25 as part of an effort to bring attention to the public health problem of falls. The National Council on Aging sponsors the awareness initiative.

Two Lancaster physical therapists, Lisa Goussetis and Tim Kauffman, Ph.D., were featured speakers at the Pennsylvania Physical Therapy Association Conference, where they presented information about new research as it pertains to the issue of falling. Their presentation included a discussion of the emerging syndrome of osteosarcopenia as it relates to falls. They shared that treatment interventions to prevent falls require strategies that work bone and muscle together.

Lancaster physical therapist Tim Kauffman teaches balance and Tai Chi exercises to physical therapy and nursing students at a nursing home in Paramaribo, Suriname.

Goussetis treats patients at Drevna Physical Therapy, and she lectures regionally on the topics of bone health, balance, falls, faulty posture and how to prevent or overcome problems in these areas. She is a specialist for treating persons with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems which can be related to poor posture. She has taught courses for the Pennsylvania Physical Therapy Association and local physical therapy schools. Kauffman was the owner of the former Kauffman Physical Therapy which is now Hartz Physical Therapy. He is a Fellow in the American Physical Therapy Association and the Gerontological Society of America. He is the lead editor of three geriatric rehabilitation textbooks and has lectured nationally and across

the world. He has published seminal research on hip fractures, aging posture and strengthening. Until COVID19, he taught a weekly Better Bones Better Balance class for the community at two local churches. Joining them in the presentation was physical therapist Joanne Fagerstrom, owner of Mindful Physical Therapy near Philadelphia. In addition to her office practice, she teaches an online, evidenced-based balance exercise class twice weekly for anyone who is interested in strengthening muscles and bones and improving balance to reduce the risk of falls. Their talks, based on the latest medical research, emphasized that falls can be prevented and that bones and muscles do not have to waste away as people age.

Five local apprentices received top scores at the ABC Keystone Annual Craft Competition on Sept. 26. The event was held at the chapter’s training facility in Manheim. Earning the top scores in their respective trades provides these apprentices the opportunity to move on to the 2021 ABC National Craft Competition (NCC) to be held Tuesday, March 9, through Thursday, March 11, 2021, in Gaylord, Texas. This year, two of the chapter’s carpentry apprentices received tied scores, and both will be joining ABC Keystone’s NCC team in March. Top scorers receive an allexpenses paid trip to the upcoming ABC National Competition this spring. ABC Keystone has a history of producing National Craft Championship medal winners representing the southcentral Pennsylvania area, and the chapter will again be well-rep-

resented by these five apprentices in March 2021. In appreciation of their hard work training for the event, all 12 competitors received $50 gift cards (top scorers received $75 gift cards), a tool bag donated by ABC Keystone member Capitol Electric and a tape measure donated by ABC Keystone member Milwaukee Tool Company. The fourth-year top-scoring apprentices represented four trades: carpentry, electrical, plumbing and sheet metal. The 2020 ABC Keystone local craft competition top scorers were as follows: Sky DeLaughter, electrical, Cedar Electric Inc., Fleetwood; Philip Gregg, sheet metal, James Craft & Son Inc., Columbia; Dakota Leibensperger, carpentry, Arthur Funk & Sons Inc., Lebanon; Jeremy Ressler, carpentry, J.D. Eckman Inc., Lancaster; and Matthew Tressler, plumbing, James Craft & Son Inc., York.

The timed competition followed a similar format as the upcoming national competition, and apprentices were challenged to follow plans to craft projects that tested their skills, knowledge and attention to safety. The competition has two components: the written test, which counts for 25% of their total score, and the practical “hands-on competition, which counts for 75% of their total score. In addition to showcasing their top-quality work, the competitors must also adhere to strict safety standards. They are challenged throughout the day by having to maintain focus in a busy environment just as they will be at the national competition. The Keystone Chapter’s PAregistered apprenticeship program offers education in nine trades and focuses on handson training under the guidance of experienced instructors.
