Wayside Church slates annual Trunk ’n Treat

Wayside Presbyterian Church, 600 Stony Battery Road, Landisville, will host its 11th annual Trunk ’n Treat and fall festival on Wednesday, Oct. 23. The free event will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and it is open to children of all ages. Participants in sixth grade or below must be accompanied by an adult to participate.

During the event, members of the congregation and the surrounding community will park their cars in the lower parking lot of the church, which will be closed to traffic. Vehicles will be adorned with Halloween decorations and lined up with candy-filled trunks, and owners will hand out treats to costumed children as they make their way to each car. In the event of inclement weather, activities will take place inside the church. Complimentary snacks and hot dogs will be available on a

first-come, first-served basis. Live music will be provided by Grace Notes, Wayside Church’s resident praise and worship band. Members of Wayside Church’s family ministry team and youth group will operate a tent to offer games and activities to children and parents.

Professional magician Erick Hershey will perform in the church’s pavilion; the magic show will feature whimsical, Halloween-themed spectacles appropriate for children of all ages, and Hershey will roam the church grounds to entertain guests throughout the evening.

Wayside Church held its first Trunk ’n Treat community event in 2013 to provide a safe alternative and creative spin on traditional neighborhood trickor-treating. The church has continued to hold the event annually, and it has grown into a tradition that is beloved by both congregants and members of the greater community. “In the past, we’ve

At the start of each academic year, the Hempfield Foundation unveils a new batch of grants to support educational enrichment opportunities throughout Hempfield School District. The foundation’s grants enable teachers to offer unique projects and field trips to students at every grade level. This year, the Hempfield Foundation awarded 13 grants

totaling nearly $27,000.

At Hempfield High School, the Tom Albright Grant is providing $1,000 to entrepreneurship teachers Chris Hanusa and Andy Wise. Hanusa and Wise use the grant funds each year to provide groups of students in the Entrepreneurship II course with the resources necessary to create business plans and product pitches. At the end of the semester, each group in the

Success in the business world revolves around opportunity. Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology (TSCT) not only seeks to provide opportunities for students, but also assists them with skills that will make the most out of those opportunities. They are opportunities that have the potential to be life altering.

“We are always looking at workforce data to align our majors to the needs of the workforce,” said Pedro Rivera, who’s been TSCT’s president for four years. “We want our students to have careers. Everyone who graduates from here is employable for a lifetime. When someone can earn a living wage with one or two years of education and with little or no debt, they have more time to be mothers and fathers, to be civically

minded and to engage with their churches.”

Located at 750 E. King St., Lancaster, TSCT offers 24 two-year associate degrees and four one-year certificate degrees in pursuits like electrical technology, architecture, welding, carpentry, auto mechanics and masonry.

“We have offerings for anyone at any stage of life,” said Rivera. “We’re preparing you to be a learner and preparing you to be skilled in your workforce, and we’re preparing you to be a leader. We want you to grow and be prosperous and have a career.”

There are 1,470 students enrolled at TSCT for the fall semester, and they are all Pennsylvania residents. About half live in dorms on campus while the other half commute.

“Our students are about as dynamic and diverse as the commonwealth is,” said Rivera. “They come here with their eyes wide open. The students who come here know what they want to do with their lives. Most of them have done their research. They come here, and they’re focused. When we bring all of these students from different backgrounds together,

it’s amazing to see how quickly they begin to work together. To be successful, you have to be able to work in small groups.”

Nearly 95% of TSCT students stay in Pennsylvania after they graduate. Almost 97% of TSCT graduates are placed in jobs before or right after they leave the institution.

Many students receive financial aid in the form of grants and scholarships.

“Most of these kids are just like me, first-generation college students,” said Rivera. “They are looking to change their own trajectory and the trajectories of their whole families. I see them walk into this college for their first days, I see them develop confidence and I see them graduate. When you get to see firsthand how you’re changing lives, that’s incredible.”

TSCT is named for the Lancaster resident who bequested the funds to start it in his will. It opened in 1905 to provide an education in academics and trades for orphaned youths, and it became an accredited college in 1991. In additions to academics, TSCT offers its students extracurricular activities like clubs and intercolle -

Lancaster Flute Ensemble to present concert

The Apostles Academy of Arts & Sciences at Church of the Apostles United Church of Christ, 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, will present a concert titled “Characters” by the Lancaster Flute Ensemble on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 3 p.m. as part of its monthly concert series.

The Lancaster Flute Ensemble, formed in 2016, currently has more than 20 members from Lancaster, York, Elizabethtown, Ephrata, Lititz, Reading and Lebanon and regularly rehearses at Church of the Apostles. The group got its start when three enthusiasts met at a flute camp in the Poconos. Wanting to continue the musical camaraderie at home, they decided to form an ensemble in the Lancaster area. Welcoming players with diverse

giate athletics and operates a campus clothing bank, a food bank and a toiletry bank.

Thaddeus Stevens was a congressman and champion of freedom and equality who lived in the 18th and 19th centuries.

“Our namesake is very important to us,” said Rivera. “Everything we do revolves around our values. Over the years, our majors have changed, our

campus has changed and it’s become a much more inclusive campus. We take our responsibilities to the community very seriously. We want our students to be prosperous. We want to give every single person who walks through that door an opportunity to be successful.”

The group features a variety of flutes, including piccolos, C flutes, alto and bass flutes and contrabass flutes. The group even incorporates a cello to enrich the sound. The repertoire spans classical, popular, sacred and folk music, with original arrangements by founding member Ray-Michael Kauffman.

As part of its outreach to the greater Lancaster area, the academy offers a variety of cultural programs, including concerts, music and art lessons, and support for local scholarship initiatives. Most recently, the academy contributed to STEAM programs in partnership with the Hempfield Foundation.

class receives $100 to buy materials for a competitive project based on the show “Shark Tank.” This is the fourth consecutive year the high school has been able to offer the project due to grant funding from the Hempfield Foundation. “Entrepreneurship is really just an idea. The big challenge is taking it from an idea to an innovative reality,” Hanusa said. “That’s the big advantage here; students can take risks they didn’t think they could take, buy stuff, put it together and have a prototype by the time they get to

Shark Tank.”

Last year, a separate grant from the Hempfield Foundation allowed Hanusa to establish the “maker space,” a multipurpose workshop at the high school that is equipped with a 3D printer, a label maker, a heat press and other equipment students can use for marketing projects. “(The Hempfield Foundation) has been an absolutely phenomenal partner in helping us educate our students and provide the best opportunities possible,” said Hanusa. “They’ve been the biggest player in expanding our

entrepreneurship opportunities at the school. We really couldn’t do what we do without them.”

The foundation’s 202425 academic year grants will also fund a workshop at the high school titled “Creative Things for Classical Strings” offered by guest musician Tracy Silverman.

At Landisville Education Center, educator Sue Allen received grant funding to introduce technology integration lessons to enhance class materials via robotics. The foundation also awarded several grants to teachers at Landisville

Lions Club sets chicken potpie meal

The Mountville Lions Club will hold a chicken potpie meal on Saturday, Oct. 19, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 100 W. Main St., Mountville, from 10 a.m. until sold out.

The potpie is homemade; the club members cook the chicken and roll out the dough, and the whole club participates. The group usually uses 460 pounds of chicken, 240 pounds of potatoes, 200 pounds of flour, and 60 dozen eggs.

Takeouts only will be available, and there is a fee. Homemade desserts, including pies and cakes, will also be for sale.

The Lions Club will offer brooms as well. The brooms used to be manufactured by people with vision impairments but are now made by local Amish craftspeople.

In addition, the club will collect pajamas for children in foster care. New pajamas in all sizes are needed both for males and females. The Lions Club has been collecting items for several weeks

via baskets placed in the community.

The Mountville Lions Club holds potpie suppers on the third Saturdays of March and October, and the events started more than 50 years ago. The suppers are the club’s main fundraisers.

The club also raises funds by operating roller ball stands at the Mountville Days Carnival and the Washington Boro Tomato Festival. Proceeds are used to help support Lions projects. Projects supported by the club include funding scholarships at Hempfield High School; supporting Beacon Lodge, a nonprofit camp in Mount Union that offers programs for people who are blind or challenged physically in other ways; other projects that help people with vision impairment; and maintaining the pavilion at the borough park. The club also supports the Columbia Food Bank and organizes an annual Easter egg roll.

Youths invited to Elks Hoop Shoot

When it comes to future success, one factor has a strong influence: grit.

According to researchers from the University of Pennsylvania, grit is a more accurate predictor of success than IQ, physical health, social intelligence or attractiveness.

Members of the Columbia-Middletown Elks 1074 have been promoting the

power of grit for decades through the Elks Hoop Shoot. The event, open to anyone between the ages of 8 and 13, will be held this year on Sunday, Nov. 3, in the gym at Park Elementary School, 50 S. Sixth St., Columbia. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m., and the contest will begin at 12:30 p.m.

“The Hoop Shoot started in 1946 at national level,” said Valerie Kissinger, chair

Mardi Gras Halloween Parade will roll through town

For 77 years, the annual Mardi Gras Halloween Parade has rolled through the streets of Columbia, entertaining spectators and raising spirits. This year’s parade will be held on Thursday, Oct. 24. It will step off at 7 p.m. from 10th and Manor streets in Columbia and will proceed along a 1.5-mile route that includes sections of Manor,

South Fourth, Union, South Second, Locust and South Sixth streets.

The parade is sponsored by the Columbia Lions Club and Sunsnappers, a men’s service organization. This year’s parade theme is “Food Fiesta,” and both participants and spectators are encouraged to wear costumes reflecting the theme.

“This year’s parade is shaping up to be one of the biggest in years,” said

John Grunden, Lions Club treasurer. “We already have more units registered than we did last year. It’s a great way for people to come together for an evening of fun with family and friends.”

The parade will feature five divisions with at least one band in each division. The procession will include high school marching bands, emergency response units, baton twirlers, Scout troops, fire companies, floats, walking groups, businesses and a steam calliope as the final entry. Several nonprofit organizations will sell food along the parade route.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in various categories, including baton groups, floats, walking groups and individuals. Grunden explained that

judges are anonymous and roam the parade route to rate entrants on their overall appearance and performance. This helps ensure that parade viewers get a fair representation of what each unit has to offer, including elements that might have been missed if the entrants were to save their best performance for a specific reviewing area.

Jeff Groff, a lifelong resident of the Columbia area, will serve as grand marshal. He and his wife, Joan, will ride in a horse-drawn carriage at the front of the parade.

“Jeff’s dedication to serving the community runs deep,” said Paul Resch, president of the Lions Club.

“Whether it’s driving two hours to help clear brush at the Lions Beacon Lodge Camp for blind and disabled children or pitching in here in town to put up American flags, pick up trash or support educational projects like The Edible Classroom, Jeff is always willing to lend a hand where there’s a need. The only thing that surpasses his long list of volunteer efforts is the generosity of his heart.”

Groff has volunteered with numerous organizations, including the former Columbia Jaycees, which

sponsored the parade for many years. He serves as president of the Columbia Park Rangers, a volunteer group he helped found more than 20 years ago. He also assists with repair work at Mount Bethel Cemetery, serves with the Columbia Shade Tree Commission and volunteers with projects at Glatfelter Memorial Field. Outside of Columbia, he has helped Lancaster Conservancy and Penn State Extension with tree planting, maintenance and invasive species clearing and has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, among other organizations.

“It has been wonderful to be a part of Columbia organizations for several decades and stay involved with the parade throughout,” Groff said. “I’ve also been given the opportunity to participate in many projects and experiences while meeting people along with enhancing and sharing my skill set while contributing to a better world.”

For more information on the parade or to register, call John or Cheryl Grunden at 717-305-8348 or email parade@columbia lions.org. Online registration is available at https:// columbialions.org.

had hundreds of people attend from across Lancaster County. In recent years, we’ve started doing more outreach to our immediate neighbors in the Hempfield community,” said Steve Fritz, Wayside Church’s pastor. “We get a lot of returning families every year who appreciate the more family-friendly focus on the season.”

Wayside Church frequently hosts free, community events throughout the year, including concerts, picnics and arts and crafts activities for children. The church also offers jazz worship services that incorporate toe-tapping tunes and unique renditions of classic worship songs.

The jazzy Sunday services feature Wayside Church’s music director, Janelle Pabon, as well as the church’s accompanist, Charlie Postas. Every summer, Wayside Church hosts Waystock, an annual outdoor concert and family-friendly event open to the public. of the local event. “At first, it was just boys, but in ‘74, they allowed girls to enter.” Over the years, Columbia’s event has drawn strong participation, but that dwindled a bit since COVID, so organizers are hoping to build the event back up to its pre-pandemic level.

For the free-throw competition, children are divided into three age groups and separated by gender. Each participant may take warm-up shots and then will attempt to make as many baskets as possible in 25 shots.

Prizes will be awarded for first-, second- and thirdplace finishers, and the top scorer in each division will move on to a district competition in January 2025.

“From there, winners will go to the state competition in March and then on to the regional competition and to the finals, which will be held in April in Chicago,” Kissinger said. “In the past, we have had people move on to states, but we haven’t had anyone go to nationals. We’d love to see that happen.”

At the national event, six finalists are crowned national champions, and their names are displayed in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.

The Hoop Shoot is open to anyone in the age range from any area, and participants

do not have to be members of a basketball team to participate. Members of the Columbia High School basketball team will volunteer at the event, helping with rebounds and serving as role models for the younger kids, Kissinger said.

The mission of the event is to have fun but also to help students set a goal, she explained.

“I think a competition like this is good for kids because it’s something they can practice and strive for,” she shared. “They start building that grit and determination, and that helps them throughout their life.”

Hosting the Hoop Shoot is just one way the Elks give back to the community, said volunteer Robin Gamby.

“We do a lot of things for

the community,” she said, noting that the organization participates in National Night Out and hosts a Flag Day event. “We want to make an impact, and the Hoop Shoot is a way for us to reach out to kids in the community.”

The Hoop Shoot is part of the organization’s charitable arm, the Elks National Foundation (ENF). The ENF strives to build stronger communities through pro-

grams that support youths, serve veterans and meet local needs.

For more information on the Hoop Shoot, visit https://tinyurl.com/ 4vjut2wb, call 717-5759032 or email bpoe1074@ comcast.net. Participants who register by Friday, Oct. 25, will be entered in a drawing for Dick’s Sporting Goods gift cards. Preregistration is encouraged for the event, but it is not required.
