Faith Friendship Villa Seeks Support System’s Return BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
he past seven months have not been easy for the residents and staff members of Faith Friendship Villa, 128 W. Main St., Mountville. The personal care facility is home to 74 residents, 95% of whom have some form of mental illness. “Not only were we keeping people safe from a physical issue, but we were keeping their mental health safe as well, said executive director Gwen Didden. “We would try to keep things as normal as possible but also keep exposure down. We did a lot of educating (and) talking through emotions (like) fear and frustration. Because outings were no longer allowed, staff members had to be creative with in-house activities. They offered crafts, meaningful conversations, and encouragement.
T
Some staff members downloaded Zoom and other video-conferencing software to their personal devices to help residents stay connected with their friends and family members. Store runs, when a staff member would venture out to shop for the residents, were highlights of their weeks. “It really did help us as a community grow closer, Didden said. “We’ve been really gentle with ourselves and each other, but we’re focusing on being the best we can be. While the residents and staff members of the villa are making the most of things, the community misses having visitors. Due to state regulations, guests are limited. This means that the families that served meals, the churches that hosted bingo on Sunday nights, and even the student group from Milton Hershey School that visited have had to
suspend their involvement. “We really miss our support system, Didden commented. She noted that some groups have been able to do some work on the grounds surrounding the villa. “Residents loved it because they could look out the window and see their support system hasn’t left us. Some churches have hosted collections of items for the residents. Many are low-income, so there is always something they can use, Didden said. Additionally, financial donations are appreciated. The villa is run by Faith Friendship Ministries, which is a registered nonprofit organization. The second annual fundraising gala planned for this year has been postponed to 2021. Plans for Thanksgiving and Christmas are also expected to look different than in previous years. A special holiday meal is planned for See Friendship Villa pg 2
Churches Plan Food Giveaway BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
There are plenty of topics upon which to disagree today, but a group of Lancaster-area churches wants to do things differently. “We really feel like now’s the time for the Church to come together to build relationships, said Matt Kroll, pastor at Lord’s House of Prayer and a founding member of Lancaster United Pastors. “Lancaster needs to hear the Church’s voice - not a church. Gardner’s Mattress & More Marks 30 Years Gardner’s Mattress & More is celebrating 30 years of serving Lancaster County. The business was founded as Gardner’s Bedrooms in 1990 by Jim Gardner, who sold it to Ben McClure and Jeff Giagnocavo when he retired in 2010. McClure and Giagnocavo met as buyer and seller 18 years ago. Giagnocavo was a sales representative, selling products to Gardner’s Bedrooms, and McClure was the showroom and selling manager. When Gardner retired, the two younger men decided to form a partnership to buy the business, pledging a commitment to five-star service, experience, and products for their customers. Together, Giagnocavo and McClure have written buying guides, hosted seminars, and held events to connect with the community and educate the public on the ways Gardner’s Mattress & More can meet individuals’ sleep needs. The business partners introduced the Dream
Room and customer lounge shopping concepts, and they give back to the community with the Gardner’s Gives Back food drive. Gardner’s Mattress & More has won 11 consecutive Reader’s Choice Awards for Lancaster’s Favorite Mattress Store.

“Our residents share the values of hospitality, love for each other, and care. They’re very proud to be part of the Mountville community and Lancaster County,” Didden remarked. “I truly believe Faith Friendship Ministries belongs to Lancaster County. In February, Giagnocavo published “Sleep Better,” and free copies may be obtained by stopping by the store, 830 Plaza Blvd., Lancaster, during October. “It’s the culmination of his experience and knowledge base and clearly identifies where people struggle to get quality sleep and how we might be able to help them in our store,” McClure commented. “Of course, nothing in the book was written in a vacuum,” Giagnocavo added. “We succeed together as a team, and at Gardner’s, I’m the abrupt, hard-charging personality in the company, always pushing to do better. Along the way, Ben’s steady demeanor, customer service, and leadership skills have been a perfect fit with my skills of marketing and customer experience touch points. There is no way each of us reaches this point in time alone. Our company and our customers are truly better with us working together.” The three decades of Gardner’s existence have seen ebbs and flows in the mattress business. Waterbeds surged in pop-

Gardner’s Mattress from pg 1 ularity, then plateaued, before nearly disappearing. Gardner’s was the first Lancaster County retailer to carry the novel Tempur-Pedic offerings, beginning in 2002. The two-sided, flippable mattress design fell out of vogue, but it has returned full force, and more than 25 models are displayed in Gardner’s showroom. The last five years have been turbulent in the mattress world, with direct-toconsumer offerings increasing in number and options. The online companies’ return policies prompted Gardner’s to take another look at its customer exchange service, creating its Wake Up Happy Comfort Guarantee, which says, “If you don’t love your mattress, we’ll exchange it for one you do love, with no fees, costs, or delivery charges.” Buying mattresses is a highly subjective process, Giagnocavo explained. “We can offer, spec for spec, the highest quality mattresses at each price point possible, and yet, when we put 10 people on any one mattress, we will get 10 very different opinions,” he said. “Our bodies are all built differ-

Protect yourself and those around you. This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the flu. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness. We’re fighting two health threats this season, so every little bit helps. One little shot can make a big difference.

ently, and we all have unique aches and pains along with some having intense medical issues. While we aren’t doctors and don’t pretend to be, everything we demonstrate and discuss with our customers can be felt and experienced by them in a positive way in which they feel better. That’s our job, (to) discover how our sleep systems fit your needs.” McClure noted that Gardner’s strives to give customers positive experiences. Buying mattresses is important and can best be selected by shopping in-person at the right store, he asserted. “The fact that seven days a week any one of our customers can visit us means we are always actively working to help our customers wake up happy and earn a five-star review from them,” McClure said. The Gardner’s team has developed a simple process devoid of buy-it-today high pressure and dubious sales tactics. “You’ll see us out and about in town. Our faces are on the side of the truck,” Giagnocavo said. “This is our company, and every action is a positive representation of who we are as people and our commitment to helping our neighbors be happier, healthier, and more productive.” Giagnocavo and McClure each have children, who sometimes help to unload trucks or sweep the store, so the business partners hope that Gardner’s may stay in the family and continue to be a meaningful part of Lancaster County residents’ lives. To celebrate the 30th anniversary during October, Gardner’s is offering “30 Days of Prizes & Gifts.” Readers may learn more by visiting the store or www.GardnersMattress AndMore.com/sales.

According to many travel polls, travelers are choosing small-town destinations for getaways and vacations. Not just now, because of COVID, but into the spring and summer of 2021. Fewer crowds, less traffic, unique culture, and friendly locals make visiting obscure locations more desirable than ever. As the editor of Where & When Pennsylvania, a publication of Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC), I quickly learned that many of us have little idea of what’s going on in our surrounding area, let alone across the commonwealth. That’s why we’re launching a new series in our community papers called EXPLORE Across Town, Across PA. Each month we’ll feature a town in our coverage area, as well as a desti-
nation somewhere in Pennsylvania. Along the way, we hope to show that you don’t have to travel far to find great restaurants, unique shops, amazing outdoor locations, and world-class historical sites. Traveling locally can have a big impact on small businesses without having a big impact on your wallet. Take a train trip through the Pocono Mountains on the Historic Stourbridge Line, visit the Jimmy Stewart Museum and the iconic actor’s hometown, see the amazing architectural feats of Frank Lloyd Wright, and hear the distinctive bugle call of a bull elk in Pennsylvania’s northwest. There are so many fascinating destinations to be discovered across town and across Pennsylvania. Our first highlighted destination will be Jim Thorpe; look for the article in your mailbox in early November.

In the second meeting of the season with Conestoga Valley, Hempfield’s boys’ soccer team came up short Thursday evening at home. The Buckskins pinned only the second Lancaster-Lebanon League loss of the season on the Knights in a 3-0 shutout. The scoring started with Richard Valverde-Gomez slipping past the Knights’ defense seven minutes into the match. At the midway point of the first half an own goal gave the Buckskins a 20 advantage. long throw-ins. “They have a guy who’s 6-foot-3 and can throw the ball all the way to the far post,” said head coach Mark Ashley. Ashton Herr capped the scoring eight minutes into the second half as the CV defense allowed only four shots on goal. Noah Felty recorded four saves for Hempfield. “We had more dangerous chances on goal but couldn’t finish them,” said Ashley. “So, give CV credit.” The first-place Buckskins, who had handed Hempfield its first league loss on October 1, improved to 6-1-0 and posted another league victory two days later over Cedar Crest. FIELD HOCKEY With three matches in four days, Hempfield posted an impressive 5-0 shutout at Cedar Crest sandwiched between two tough losses. “This past week we had some competitive and close games where it really could have gone either way, but we struggled to capitalize on some scoring opportunities,” said head coach Sara Brooks. The week began with a 4-1 defeat at home to Conestoga Valley on Tuesday. It was a 1-0 match going into the second half with CV’s Ellie Livingston scoring at the 9:26 mark of the first period. “We came out strong - ready to compete by cutting to every ball and looking for teammates to get the ball up field,” said Brooks. “In the second half, possession was back and forth. They scored early and were able to capitalize on opportunities more than we were able to do.” The Buckskins carried a 2-0 lead into the fourth where Olivia Wenzel scored for Hempfield at the 8:14 mark. Despite plenty of scoring opportunities by CV, Knights goalie Eryn Murphy came away with nine saves, combining for a shutout with Lauryn Savitz, who played the first half. Keira Boensch put Hempfield up 1-0 in the first. Gianna Hoover and Kenna Price each tallied one goal in the second quarter, making it 3-0 at the half. Wenzel and Kelsea Dague each tallied one goal in the third quarter. Karly Bervinchak finished with two assists. “We capitalized on our opportunities and a variety of players were on the scoreboard,” Brooks noted. Hempfield fell to 3-7-0 overall with a 3-0 loss at Conestoga Valley on Friday. Savitz put up a strong effort with 14 saves. GIRLS’ SOCCER Hempfield stepped up to the challenge on Thursday at Conestoga Valley in a Section One girls’ soccer showdown. The Knights blanked the Buckskins 3-0 with Georgia Kielmeyer scoring two goals. “One of Georgia’s strengths is her ability to compete with a physical and aggressive style of play,” said Hempfield coach Jason Mackey. “She came out with a mission.
“I think that was huge - a momentum builder,” continued the coach. “We haven’t started fast like that in most of our games.” Thanks to the attacker finding the back of the Buckskins’ net for two early goals, it was 2-0 just 14 minutes into the match. Freshman Maya Trowbridge made it 3-0 just past the midway point of the first half. “We do have a significant amount of young players,” Mackey noted. “Freshmen and sophomores are contributing at a level they have not played before. “With youth you get growing pains, but also great learning experience,” he added. Emileigh Antesberger (two saves) and the defense held strong the rest of the way as Hempfield improved to 3-3-1 (2-3-1 league). FOOTBALL Two rushing touchdowns by Cade Clancy and two more by Evan Clark stunned Hempfield in the first quarter as Manheim Township built a 28-0 lead en route to a 49-7 victory Friday night in Landisville. Clark scored on an eight-yard run and a one-yard surge across the goal line. Clancy scored on a 14-yard TD and a 41-yard scamper. The loss ended the Knights’ (3-2 overall) three-game win streak. The Streaks, meanwhile, won their third straight. Early in the second quarter, Hempfield got on the board thanks to Cam Harbaugh’s 43-yard scoring pass to David Almodovar. Spencer Biscoe’s PAT kick made it 28-7. The Streaks responded with a Clark to Anthony Ivey pass for 53 yards. Clancy added two more rushing touchdowns to cap the scoring. GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL Hempfield stayed unbeaten (8-0) with 3-0 victories over Cedar Crest, Warwick, and CV, and maintained possession of first place in the Section One volleyball standings. Tuesday night they downed Crest 25-11, 25-17, 25-11 on the road with Joslene Morgan and Ashley Weaver delivering seven kills each. Emily James served up three aces to go with four blocks while Allison Cummings led the team in digs - 19. Emma Bitner distributed 27 assists. Thursday nights’ sets against Warwick were 25-12, 25-12 and 2520 on Hempfields’ home court. James collected 12 kills and tied Morgan in blocks with two each. Bitner finished with 20 assists while Cummings added 11 digs. Trinity Gruber served up four aces. In their 25-19, 25-13, 25-15 sweep at CV on Friday, the Knights got 26 assists from Bitner and 16 digs by Cummings. Gruber delivered two service aces and James notched 10 kills. CROSS COUNTRY The cross country squads hosted Ephrata on Tuesday with the boys’ team (11-0) staying undefeated and the girls’ team improving to 6-3 with a 27-31 win. The boys’ team dominated in a 15-50 win, claiming the top eight

Freshmen Callie Herr (11th, 22:27) and Norah Rynier (13th, 22:32) were followed by Grace Stringer (22:36) and Lily Clinton (23:16) at 14th and 15th, respectively. TENNIS Grace Lehman reached the L-L League championship semifinals in both singles and doubles. In the tournament that came to a close at Conestoga Valley on October 6, Lehman
and freshman Lydia Sullivan defeated Ellen Zern and Aubrey Jones of Donegal 6-2, 6-0 in the first round and won the second-round match 75, 7-5 over Manheim Central’s Eliana Shenk and Brianna Mylin before losing in the semifinals to eventual champs - Avery Palandjian and Scotty Reynolds of Manheim Township. Lehman had a first-round bye in the Flight One singles followed by a 6-0, 6-3 win against Ryan Gerhart of Lampeter-Strasburg. Palandjian earned a 6-1, 6-1 win in the semis against Lehman.

Siloam from pg 2 The next fundraiser will be held on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Ethiopian Evangelical Church in Lancaster (EECL), 175 Church St., Landisville. Guests should enter the church property from Camp Meeting Road and exit onto Church Street. The meal will be held as takeout only. In lieu of a set price, donations will be accepted. The last fundraiser, held on Sept. 12, was so popular that Siloam Ethiopia co-founder and kitchen coordinator Wegayhu Ketema had to cook more food, and supplies were exhausted in under two hours. Ketema is planning to prepare even larger quantities for the upcoming meal. The proceeds from this fundraiser will be added to the $4,000 raised through last month’s meal and put toward the purchase of a machine used to test blood chemistry levels. Siloam Ethiopia co-founder Demeke Getahun, who is married to Ketema and is the pastor at EECL, noted that the organization, which founded and operates a free health clinic providing urgent and routine medical care in Harar,
S TA R T A L I F E LO N G R E L AT I O N S H I P
Ethiopia, will get the machine for a reduced price. “It is more than $30,000, but as a nonprofit, we will get it for $25,000,” Getahun said. “It is very expensive equipment.” Having blood testing equipment on-site at the clinic is in part a requirement by the Ethiopian government. It is also a service to clients, most of whom cannot afford to travel the distance to the nearest laboratory to get bloodwork done. Readers may visit www.siloamethio.org to learn more about Siloam Ethiopia. Reservations for the Oct. 24 event are not required, but for planning purposes, readers are asked to email siloamethio@gmail.com if they will attend.

MERCHANDISER - Hempfield Edition -
BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
Hempfield United Methodist Church (HUMC), 3050 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, has created a safe place with consistent internet access for middle and high school students to study on days they do not have to report to school in person. Students may report to room 170 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the program, which has been dubbed a “virtual classroom.â€? Adult volunteers who have passed background checks and received Safe Sanctuary training will monitor the classroom. While some of the volunteers are former teachers, their primary role is not that of educators. “Our goal isn’t necessarily to provide classroom aide service, but if (students) are having issues ‌ we’re there for them,â€? said Kevin Kresge, HUMC associate pastor and director of online ministries. “Mostly we’re just there to make sure it’s safe, but we’ll offer help if we can.â€? Students must bring their own devices and will not have access to printers. Participation will be limited to 15 students at any time, and Kresge has set up a SignUpGenius page accessible at https://hempfieldumc.org /classroom so individuals may reserve their spaces. The calendar currently runs through Thanksgiving, but the classroom will be open as long as it is needed, Kresge said.
COVID-19 mitigation protocols will be followed, including daily screening, wearing masks, and social distancing. Volunteers will sanitize the classroom before students arrive and after they leave. Room 170 has an exterior door, so after students are screened outside, they may enter the room without passing through the rest of the church. The doors and windows will be open as much as possible to provide ventilation. A storage space for packed lunches will be provided. “ We’re trying to get our cafĂŠ reopened in the church so we can offer some sort of snacks,â€? Kresge commented. There is no cost to attend the virtual classroom. Participation is ideally for students who do not have sufficient internet service. Kresge related that he heard of students spending long hours in the lobbies of fast-food restaurants so they could do their schoolwork, and he wanted to do something to help. “We perceived a need in the community, and after some discussion with several of the local school district superintendents, our concerns were confirmed,â€? Kresge said. “We knew that we needed to find a way to help families that don’t have access to reliable internet for their students who are attending school virtually.â€? The idea for the virtual classroom stemmed from a conversation with another United Methodist pastor. Kresge then contacted the districts most represented by the students who participate in HUMC activities: Hempfield, Columbia, Donegal, and Penn
Manor. As word about the program has spread, other churches have called Kresge to find out how they can do something similar for students in their communities, and Kresge has been happy to share his experience. “Taking care of our communities is one of the big values we espouse, he said. For more information about the virtual classroom, readers may visit the aforementioned website or call the church at 717-285-5156. Emails may be sent to Kresge through the contact form at https://hempfieldumc.org.
