Ironville UMC slates upcoming bazaar

The holiday season is approaching quickly, and many community members are excited participate in the Lancaster County tradition of holiday bazaar shopping. Ironville United Methodist Church (UMC), 4020 Holly Drive, Columbia, is gearing up for its annual Christmas Bazaar, which it will host from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2.

Members of the Willing Hearts, a community outreach committee at Ironville UMC, and congregational members of both Ironville UMC and Newtown UMC have been working hard since February to craft crocheted items, wooden snowmen, gift card boxes, assorted tree ornaments, and other

interesting holiday craft that will be available to purchase at the upcoming bazaar.

In addition to crafts, this year’s event will feature more than 15 vendors. Each vendor will showcase a variety of unique items such as antiques, knitted clothing, tree ornaments, handmade aprons, hand-painted ornaments, jewelry, toys, crafts, and dream catchers.

The Christmas Bazaar will incorporate a silent auction to feature items such as a set of china, an original oil painting, a Christmas wreath, a framed Christmas song sheet, a picnic basket, and various other items that guests may bid on.

The church will highlight a

collection of unique goods and traditional holiday items in a room reserved for a white elephant gift exchange. All available items have been donated by members of Ironville UMC and Newtown UMC. A separate room in Ironville UMC will contain children’s crafts and toys available to purchase.

A variety of refreshments will be available to purchase during the event, including hot dogs, beef barbecue sandwiches, chicken corn soup, homemade apple dumplings, cakes, pies, and other baked goods. Hot and cold beverages will also be available to purchase.

Ironville UMC pastor Jeff Engroff invites community members to shop, enjoy

homemade food and meet members of both Ironville UMC and Newtown UMC as they shop at the Christmas Bazaar. Many congregation members have participated in the annual tradition for more than four decades, and the bazaar features new vendors every year.

Proceeds from the Christmas Bazaar will benefit Ironville UMC’s capital improvement fund. The church hosts weekly worship services at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays, and each service is livestreamed on the church’s YouTube channel, @IronvilleUMC.

Of all the holidays traditionally celebrated around the world, Halloween is one of the most unique - and most peculiar - celebrations of the year. When autumn ushers in the start of the holiday season, many people first think of Thanksgiving turkeys and Christmas gifts as the colder months approach. But Halloween, a day that one might regard as the delinquent younger sibling in the family of holidays, has a long history of odd customs that set it apart from Yuletide and Easter, and residents of Lancaster County have added their own traditions to the mix over many years. Halloween originated as All Hallows’ Eve, taking place before the annual Christian celebration of All Hallows’ Day on Nov. 1. The evening signifies the beginning of Allhallowtide, a time of year when Christians honor saints, martyrs and departed souls who are yet on their journey to heaven. All Hallows’ Day has been observed for more than a thousand years, but the Halloween we know in modern times is the product of various cultures and traditions picked up through the centuries. Similarly to Christmas, All Hallows’ Eve adopted many customs that historians attribute to Celtic societies, including the Gaelic festival Samhain. Samhain marked the beginning of winter in the ancient Gaelic calendar, and its rituals involved offering food, drinks and crops to wayward spirits and wandering souls who may arrive at the door. By the 16th century, Scottish celebrators practiced “guising,” the

In addition, the church will host its fourth annual Trunk or Treat night on Thursday, Oct. 31. Church members and friends will decorate vehicles and give out candy and treats in the church parking lot from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Last year, candy was provided at 25 vehicles for an estimated 220 kids and about as many family members.

Foundation awards grant to Tec Centro Workforce Network

Fulton Forward Foundation, an independent, nonprofit private foundation funded by Fulton Bank, recently presented a $250,000 grant to the Tec Centro Workforce Network, a coalition of community advocates, public

officials, philanthropic leaders and business professionals serving central Pennsylvania.

The funding, which will be distributed over the next five years, will support Tec Centro Workforce Network’s expansion of

regional workforce development centers in the area, including new curriculum and equipment for each training center. The Network is focused on creating job training and workforce development opportunities across Tec Centro organizations in Lancaster, York, Lebanon and Berks counties, in addition to the establishment of a new Tec Centro in Harrisburg this year.

Grant provides canoes and more for anyone interested in getting out on the water

Dr. David Eichler loves being out on the water. He also loves sharing his knowledge of boating with students of all ages. Now the member of Glossbrenner Church in Mount Joy can do both those things more often. Thanks to Eichler’s efforts, the church was awarded a Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission (PFBC) R3 grant in July. “R3” stands for recruitment, retention and reactivation. The grant awarded the church funds to purchase seven canoes, a trailer, paddles and personal flotation devices (PFDs).

Eichler taught health, physical and outdoor education at Donegal High School for 35 years. He used canoes provided through PFBC grants and fundraising initiatives to teach and certify students in boat safety. When he retired in January of 2020, he hoped to keep instructing people, but he needed canoes and equipment to do so. When the school district held a public drawing for the canoes, kayaks and trailers that Eichler had used, members of Glossbrenner Church submitted ballots, but they were not chosen.

“Doc,” as he’s referred to by his students, wasn’t deterred. He applied for the PFBC grant this year and took students on maiden voyages of the canoes in September.

A group of Boy Scouts from Maytown Troop 53 took to the water at Speedwell Forge Lake in Elm for the first trip. “The Scouts learned things like floating in their PFDs, how to retain body heat while in the water, the use of throw bags, safely capsizing their canoe, performing boatover-boat rescues and paddle strokes,” Eichler said.

Scout Logan Kean commented, “I liked it when we went in the canoe and flipped it over. I think overall it was a fun day here.”

Assistant Scoutmaster Tim Ford added, “The classroom instruction was very interactive; even with the young boys it was very engaging. The on-water training was a lot of fun for the boys, and they did better than I expected!”

The second outing brought members of Glossbrenner Church out on Speedwell Forge Lake. “The goals for Glossbrenner Church members were to not intentionally capsize

but to stay dry, learn some basic paddle strokes, properly don a life jacket or PFD, relax and have fun,” Eichler said of the group that included church members Wayne and Debra Kennedy, Vaughn and Debbie Nissley, Steve and Pat Spence and Jackie Roberts and Glossbrenner Church youth member Jordan York.

“It was great to be out and about with church friends,” said Debbie. “The canoes and accessories are fantastic, and we are so blessed to have them.” Other participants emphasized the easy-to-follow instruction they received as well as the opportunity to enjoy nature, including a blue heron that followed their route.

“I haven’t canoed for over 35 years and was looking forward to the outing,” said Roberts. “I wasn’t disappointed and want to definitely participate again.”

Eichler proclaimed that the Lord blessed his church with these canoes and related equipment through the graciousness of the R3 grant. “I’m privileged to have the ability to share my knowledge of canoe and boat safety to the Glossbrenner Church family and to the Maytown Boy

Scouts,” he said.

When the organizers of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church bazaar say they have something for everyone, they’re not kidding.

“If you enjoy going to craft fairs, we have something for you. If you have a sweet tooth, we have something for you,” said organizer Mary Ann Eshleman. “If you like yard sales, we have something for you. If you don’t feel like cooking dinner, we have something for you.

You can pick up some new decorations for your home, buy Christmas gifts, eat your lunch here and take home dinner and dessert and feel good because your money is going to a good cause.”

The bazaar will be held at the church, 1290 River Road, Marietta, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1 and 2.

The event will feature food, crafts and white elephant items for sale.

“Handcrafted items are made by a small group of dedicated church members

who get together monthly to create seasonal and decorative items, in addition to some members who make things at home,” Eshleman said. “Some new things that we have this year include: wooden items - cats, snowmen, reversible pumpkin stack and snowman, cardinals, penguins, pillar candles and tree-shaped candle holders.” Other handmade items will include wreaths, floral arrangements, snowman tea light holders and Christmas ornaments, as well as crocheted items such as dish cloths, fun creature hats, amigurumi animals, card baskets and catnip mice. Beaded jewelry, including earrings, bracelets and necklaces, will be for sale, along with paper items such as gift bags, gift tags, memo pads, journals and gift card holders.

“We often try to use recycled materials in our crafts, including wood from pallets, corks, buttons, old Christmas cards, glass yogurt containers and globes from our old candelabras,” Eshleman said.

A white elephant area will feature gently used and reasonably priced books, jigsaw puzzles, seasonal decorations and other treasures.

Food for sale will include homemade baked goods such as breads, cookies and cupcakes; candy; and sweet and salty snacks. Church members will also create cute candy treats such as

Hershey bar snowmen and penguins, owls made from caramel creams and miniature chocolate candies, and Tootsie Pop pumpkins and flowers.

“We will sell a variety of soups, including vegetable beef, chicken corn and ham and bean, sold cold by the quart, and hamburger and pork barbecue by the pint,” Eshleman shared. “For the first time since 2019, we will have a dining area with a menu of hot dog and meatball sandwiches, macaroni and cheese, chips and drinks.”

Proceeds from the bazaar will be split between the church’s elevator fund and its outreach ministries of the East Donegal/Conoy Area Christian Food Bank and Tools 4 School.

Eshleman invites everyone to come to the bazaar to get a jump on holiday shopping and pick up some new-to-you items. She emphasized the event relies on a team of volunteers.

“Our bazaar is a great group effort,” she said. “Our entire congregation helps in one way or another - making crafts and food for sale, donating items for the white elephant table, helping to set up our displays and work during our bazaar. It’s a lot of work, but it’s also great fellowship with our friends and neighbors in the community.”

annual tradition of performing door to door to earn food and treats. Many “guisers” carried turnips carved with faces and symbols to scare away evil spirits, a custom that was inspired by an Irish folk tale.

Irish and Scottish immigrants brought many Halloween traditions to the United States, and the rituals continued to evolve as the country developed. Turnips were replaced by pumpkins, as they are native to North America and easier to carve. As popular media began to include macabre fictions and what eventually became the horror genre, Halloween celebrations started incorporating skeletons, ghosts and vampires.

Many parts of the country developed their own unique Halloween traditions, and Lancaster

County is no exception. “I heard stories of people who would go out and tip over outhouses as a prank (in Washington Boro),” said Charlie Douts, president of Blue Rock Heritage Center and lifelong resident of the area. Douts added that children throughout the Southern End would often shuck ears of corn and toss them onto porches to make residents wonder if a restless ghost had arrived for dinner.

As one of the first colonized areas in America, Lancaster has a multitude of allegedly haunted houses, spectral residents and other folk tales derived from its rich history. Although ghost sightings cannot be confirmed, every part of the county has its own nuanced accounts of paranormal encounters. Today, visitors travel

The end of October is approaching quickly, and the spookiest day of the year is but one week away. May this be a reminder to stock your candy bowls for young trick-or-treaters, and if you visit Washington Boro, it may be wise to exercise caution when using an outhouse.

Art exhibit to explore new season of life

Danielle Rose, a selftaught local oil painter, is exhibiting her latest collection, “Into the Wild Yonder,” at Mulberry Art Studios, 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, throughout October.

Your Invited to the Catholic War Veteran Auxilary

PAINT & SIP

Come out for fun. Be an artist for a day with our Paint & Sip Event. The public is welcome.

Sun., Oct. 27

The series explores how a new season of life - including entering into marriage and beginning a family - has impacted the artist’s way of seeing the world and interacting with her craft. She has adapted both her style and subject matter.

Rose has been a resident artist at Mulberry

Art Studios in Lancaster since 2018. She began painting in college at St. Francis University, where she earned her doctorate in physical therapy. After moving to Lancaster, Rose continued to develop her abilities in oil painting, frequently drawing inspiration from local artists and the unique atmosphere Lancaster offers. She and her husband welcomed their first daughter, Lucy, on New Year’s Eve in 2022.
