Taste what the Marching Knights have been cooking at Review Knight

Hempfield High School’s marching band, the Hempfield Marching Knights, invites the community to attend its annual Review Knight performance on Wednesday, Oct. 30. The free event will take place at 8:15 p.m. in the football stadium on the high school campus, located at 200 Stanley Ave. in Landisville. Doors will open at 7:45 p.m.

“It’s

a celebration of the community members who support us; they get a great show, and our kids get a great audience.”

Every year, Review Knight gives students in the Hempfield Marching Knights an opportunity to showcase the material they’ve been working on since the start of band camp

in August. The event always takes place during the week before the marching band travels out of town to compete in the state championship. This year, the Marching Knights will travel to New Oxford High School on Saturday, Nov. 2, to compete against other marching bands from across the state.

“We do this at the end of every year as a way to say thank you and to provide a great show to the community before our last show of the season,” said Matt Ceresini, director of bands and a music teacher at Hempfield High School. “It’s a celebration of the community members who support us; they get a great show, and our kids get

Salem United Church of Christ (UCC), 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, will host its 39th annual Christmas at Salem Bazaar from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2. The event will feature holiday ornaments, handmade crafts and a variety of items donated by members of the church’s congregation.

In addition to a mixture of crafts made by Salem UCC’s members and friends of the

church, several craft items will be available to purchase from craft vendors based in the local and regional communities. Tickets will also be available to purchase for a prize drawing that will feature gift baskets assembled by members of the congregation. Winners of the prize drawings will be contacted to claim their gift baskets.

Volunteers from the church will have a variety of beverages and homemade food available to purchase during the event,

There exists a specific group of people who frequent museums merely to satisfy their curiosity. They don’t go to intentionally learn, but the learning happens organically, naturally.

Perhaps it’s not important to know exactly what type of learning goes on at the North Museum, only that the place simply promotes learning.

“It’s the joy of discovery, and it draws you in,” said Scott Downs,

a great audience.” Ceresini added that younger music students in the school district may come to the show to see what the program entails should they decide to join when they get to high school.

The Marching Knights’ 2024 show is “On Top of Spaghetti,” a whimsical exhibition of musical pieces inspired by Italian opera and traditional Italian cuisine. Members of the marching band will bring a large plate onto the field as they play classic opera arrangements and incorporate large replicas of meatballs and pasta dishes. “The theme is amazing. It seems incredibly silly, but parts of it are endearing as well,” Ceresini said. “It’s been an absolute joy, and the kids love performing it.”

Another function of the annual Review Knight is to offer a complete performance of the season’s show. Audience members attending football games throughout the season see the show as the marching band continues to add pieces, and the finishing touches are typically in place by mid-October.

“The students have been awesome this year; they’re both extremely positive and extremely hardworking,” Ceresini said. “The show has become really fun because it’s a great show, but it’s also joyful, and it’s been a really cool thing to see students take ownership of it this year.”

Dayspring to present Thanksgiving story

Dayspring Christian Academy, 120 College Ave., Mountville, will present Thanksgiving Exposed: The True Story of the Pilgrims on Friday, Nov. 22, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the school. Guests will select a specific time slot for a living history walk-through tour that will take about one hour. This live re-enactment of the true story of the Pilgrims is drawn

from primary sources. Thanksgiving Exposed takes guests first through a timeline that starts with Jesus Christ being the focal point for all of history. The story traces the Gospel from Jesus to the Apostle Paul and onward. Guests briefly learn about the impact of historical figures and events like King John and the signing of the Magna Carta, John Wycliffe translating the Bible into

English, and Martin Luther and his 95 Theses. The tour moves on to the Reformation and Elizabeth I and James I, when persecution began for reformers in England, setting the stage for the rise of the Separatists.

Guests then move through six stations that highlight God’s hand in establishing the Plymouth Colony in New England. It tells the Pilgrim story from the Pilgrims’ beginnings in Scrooby, England, through their escape to Holland and their voyage to the New World. Thanksgiving Exposed enables guests to witness how the seeds of Christian self-government were planted and later gave rise to the United States of America.

Dayspring Christian Academy’s Class of 2025 will offer treats in front of the school for guests to enjoy before or after their Thanksgiving Exposed experience. Homemade treats will be available by donation. Funds raised will go toward the senior field study.

Thanksgiving Exposed is an outreach to the community that is designed to tell the true Pilgrim

It’s only October, but Nancy Husser is already thinking about Santa. More specifically, she’s focused on the Santa Run and Walk, a 5K organized by the Manheim Lions Club. The race, which encourages participants to dress in Santa costumes or other holiday garb, will take place on Saturday, Dec. 7. It will begin in Manheim

Square at 8:30 a.m.

“The Santa 5K is a fun event,” Husser said. “We start with Christmas music in the square all morning until the start of the race.

The 5K course takes you through the west side of Manheim. We do encourage residents to come out and cheer the participants on.”

The course is relatively flat, she shared, with a hill around the 2-mile mark. Both walkers

including barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs, egg salad sandwiches, sticky buns, coffee, water and soda. Beef vegetable soup may be purchased by the bowl or by the quart, and customers may bring their own containers to fill. Homemade desserts and treats such as pumpkin pies, mince pies, fruit pies, cakes, breads and candy will be available to purchase from the bake sale table.

Used books and magazines will be sold in the church’s parlor. This year, a local author will be stationed in the parlor to offer a reading and sell copies of her book.

The Christmas at Salem Bazaar will include a kids’ craft station to keep youngsters occupied while their parents shop and browse vendors’ tables. This year’s event will also feature an appearance from Santa Claus.

Attendees of the bazaar will have an opportunity to learn about the history of Salem UCC during a tour of the church’s 1906 sanctuary. The tour will include details and anecdotes related to the founding of Salem UCC, and guests may view the stained-glass windows in the gothic-style sanctuary.

Lee Martin, Salem UCC’s community outreach coordinator and church historian, said he and his wife, Kathy Martin, have participated in the annual bazaar since

it was first held nearly 40 years ago. Kathy and fellow congregant Chris Wanner are the co-chairs of the event. “(Kathy and Chris) have been instrumental in making sure things run smoothly and setting up the event,” Lee added.

Proceeds from the bazaar will benefit Salem UCC’s community outreach efforts in addition to helping the church cover general expenses and maintenance costs. Salem UCC organizes various community outreach programs every month, including efforts to support local food banks and schools in Lancaster city and Hempfield School District. “We enjoy doing that outreach to let the community know we’re here to help,” Lee said. North Museum

the North Museum’s director of development and strategic partnerships.

“That’s what happens at a museum. As you wander around the museum, you discover things. You stumble into things. Who knows what you’ll find? You don’t know what to expect. It’s a fascinating place.”

For the curious of all ages, there is plenty to find and discover at the North Museum of Nature and Science, which is located at 400 College Ave., Lancaster. The North Museum is three floors of exhibits, informational displays, stories and memories in the making - more than 500,000 objects in all.

“Without learning, I don’t think any of us survive,” said Downs. “Humans have been learning since we first populated the Earth. The North Museum prides itself as a leader in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). The natural sciences are important. We’re really proponents of curiosity. It’s terribly important to foster that interest.”

An independent, nonprofit regional facility once associated with Franklin & Marshall College, the North Museum of Nature and Science is home to all sorts of interesting exhibits, like a live animal room, a dinosaur hall, rock and mineral collections, a planetarium, a nature gallery, an art gallery and an ornithology collection. It’s a wonderful space to uncover things you didn’t know.

“The North Museum is committed to the community,” said Downs. “We are committed to being an educational resource for everyone in the community. Science is ever changing. We’re not constrained to a fixed number of topics. It can be anything and everything. It’s living.”

The North Museum hosts more

than 35,000 visitors annually, the majority of whom come from within a 100-mile radius of Lancaster. The North Museum has become a popular destination for field trips and bus trips alike.

“It’s genuinely inquisitive people,” said Downs. “They are people who are passionate about the museum because we have been doing it for so long. When parents bring kids to the museum, it’s an opportunity to explore together. It’s not just mom and dad bringing kids and letting them roam around the museum.”

“For me, the best thing is when I hear the noise of the kids,” Downs continued. “I hear kids teaching each other, discovering things and having a great time. It reminds me of why I do it. I’m with an organization that preserves the past, looks to the future, and we sell education and fun.”

The North Museum, which was established in 1953, employs nine full-time staffers and 12 part-timers. The facility is funded through donations, sponsorships, government grants, admission fees and paid programming.

“I like to call us the Little Museum Who Could,” said Downs. “There is no shortage of big ideas and big accomplishments here. We continue to change and evolve. There’s always something new and fresh to see with us. We partner with so many different organizations throughout the community. We also help bridge the gap between education and industry.”

“We really try to create access for everybody and create opportunities for everyone,” added Downs. “That’s a big part of our mission too.”
