Salem UCC Of Rohrerstown’s Bazaar Won’t Be So Bizarre BY COURTNEY MENGEL

2021 marks the 36th consecutive year that Salem United Church of Christ (UCC) of Rohrerstown has hosted a holiday bazaar on the first Saturday of November. Last year’s event was virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but Salem UCC of Rohrerstown’s 36th annual holiday bazaar will take on a

hybrid format. As the webmaster for Salem UCC of Rohrerstown and a co-chair of the bazaar, Alex DiMarzio thought it would be a great idea to offer the public with a hybrid online and inperson event. “We’re trying to be safe,” said DiMarzio. “People can pick up their online order, or people can come inside, shop around, and look at everything.” See Salem UCC pg 5

research Mountville history, and provide resources to educate Mountville residents on the borough’s past to help build a path for the future. The Mountville Museum is situated in the historic 1901 school building, 2 College Ave., Mountville. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the museum was closed for over a year and a half. The volunteers, however, did not stop working. They spent their time cataloging about 1,000 Mountville-related items that were donated by museum board member Robert Zink; his wife, Lois; and their daughter, Sonya. For the past 40 years, the Zink family found, purchased, and was given signs, badges, plot drawings, photographs, newspaper clippings, hats, flags, tools, trophies, furniture, machinery, ceramics, documents, books, Civil War artifacts, uniforms, and more. Now 81 years old, Robert decided it was time to donate the collection to the Mountville Museum. “We enjoyed

Gregory Frey Memorial Coat Drive And Giveaway Day Planned BY COURTNEY MENGEL

The year was 2013, and Gregory Frey was a junior at Penn Manor High School. To celebrate his 17th birthday, Gregory went on a fishing trip to Sullivan County with a friend and the friend’s family in late September. On the day they were supposed to come home, some of them went fishing. Gregory grew frustrated because his line kept getting tangled, so he walked away. When Gregory’s friend went to find Gregory because it was time to leave, Gregory was found unconscious and unresponsive. CPR was performed on Gregory for over an hour, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital. It has been eight years since the incident, and the Frey family is still not entirely sure how Gregory passed away. Instead of taking the average eight weeks, Grego-

ry’s autopsy took around 12 weeks, but results were inconclusive. In honor of Gregory, former Penn Manor School District crossing guard Charlee Seiple started a coat drive. Seiple saw firsthand how many kids needed warm clothing for winter, and she dedicated the coat drive to Gregory because “he was the kind of kid who would give you the shirt off his back,” stated Emily Frey, Gregory’s older sister. “My dad would always be like, ‘Where’s your such-and-such?’ And he would say, ‘Oh, I gave it to so-and-so because they needed it.’” Emily has been running the Gregory Frey Memorial Coat Drive for the past six and a half years after Seiple moved out of state. Just last year, Emily made the Gregory Frey Memorial Coat Drive an official nonprofit organization. She and Gregory were born

The Hempfield quarterback’s precision spirals landed in the hands of Evan Smith and Andy Garcia for touchdown passes. And speaking of the statistical shifts in the game, even though Harbaugh had a game to remember, the Bulldogs defense shut down the Knights’ running game, limiting the visiting team to only 25 yards. “That is characteristic of Wilson,” said Eager, referring to the Bulldogs stopping the run. “We knew they would be Photo by Cheri Sine Hempfield’s Gunnar Swanger battles Warwick’s Jake Smith for stingy for the run, but we the ball in the Lancaster-Lebanon League championship game in fully expected to rush for Lititz on October 21. more than 25 yards. Lancaster-Lebanon League rival Manheim Township. The 11th-seeded Blue Streaks were 6-1 winners at Central York, defeating the sixthranked Panthers. The Knights defeated the Streaks 2-1 in one of the two regular-season games they played each other. The other match ended in a scoreless tie. The Knights were coming off a 2-1 loss the previous week in the L-L League title game, Thursday, October 21, on Warwick’s home turf. The Warriors and Knights took this finale into extra time where Gage Meckley finally put the match away 13 minutes in. The one Hempfield goal came in the 60th minute courtesy of Jase Colino. Felty was formidable in goal, making seven saves in the 93 minutes of play. TENNIS The twosome of Sophie Carson and Grace Lehman posted a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Carlisle’s Rory Ade and Natalie O’Neill in the first round of the District Three Class AAA double championships at Hershey Racquet Club on Friday, October 22. In the second round they battled Sophie Lanius and Lexi Lakatosh of Red Lion. The Red Lion pair prevailed 75 in the first set. They fol-

us one-dimensional.” The Bulldogs (6-3, 4-0 league) capitalized on a break they got on the opening kickoff. “Their kickoff landed on our 15-yard line, and it bounced back to their kicking team,” Eager explained. “Three plays later, they scored, and we were down 7-0.” Using the short field, the Bulldogs scored on Brad Hoffman’s eight-yard rushing touchdown. The Knights came right back and tied the score on Harbaugh’s 21-yard scoring pass to Smith. “Cam did a good job finding him,” Eager said of Harbaugh finding the open receiver, who had not been the primary target on the play. Wilson pulled ahead 21-7 before the Knights closed the gap to seven points at halftime. They did so on Stephen Katch’s two-yard rushing touchdown. Hempfield pulled even in the fourth quarter on a great play by both quarterback and receiver. “We were actually pinned at our own five- or six-yard line,” Eager explained. We got a couple of first downs. Cam stepped up in the pocket and hit him in stride. Andy did the rest. “He is very quick and has good hands,” Eager said of Garcia. With the score tied, the Knights’ drive stalled. They punted to the Bulldogs, who used their strong rushing

attack to march down the field and score with 30 seconds to go. Jones scored on a 14-yard rushing TD. GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL Hempfield held off Ephrata on Monday, October 25, in the L-L League volleyball semifinals, which the Knights hosted. Despite the Mountaineers strong first set, the Black Knights (15-0) triumphed 25-19. They won the next two sets 25-18 and 2519, finishing the sweep. In the other semifinals match, Section Two champ Elizabethtown defeated Section One runner-up Manheim Township 3-0. Hempfield setter Melody Butzer (31 assists) and libero Allison Cummings (16 digs)

helped to frustrate Ephrata’s efforts. Joslene Morgan poured in nine kills for Hempfield. Addison Leber and Nyah Smiley registered six kills and three kills, respectively. The quest for a league championship came down to Wednesday night’s clash at Conestoga Valley where Hempfield took a 1-0 lead over E-town, taking the first set 25-15. Just as the Knights inched closer to earning their fifth straight league trophy with a 25-14 win, E-town answered with their own 25-14 win. In fact, the Bears clawed away and tied the match at 2-2 before the Knights won their 18th title in 20 years on a 158 tiebreaker victory.

Tail-Wagging Fun Inspiration struck Lynn McCleary when she was on vacation in 2006. “I took my dogs to a dog park. … They took off running, and I could see how happy they were,” she recalled. “I said, ‘We need one of these at home.’” Fast forward 10 years and thanks to McCleary and a committee of volunteers, Dog Park Mount Joy opened on Nov. 1, 2016. The journey from idea to fruition was a difficult one, she noted. Obstacles included finding the right location, getting township permission and coming up with the $220,000 needed to create and open the park. Located in Rapho Township Community Park, Dog Park Mount Joy features a oneacre section dedicated to dogs under 35 pounds and a twoacre area for bigger dogs. Benches and walkways are found throughout the park,

which is accessible by a gate activated by a membership card. Having a membership-only dog park helps visitors feel invested in keeping the park clean and well maintained, McCleary said, noting, “They feel like they own a piece of the park.” The park is open to anyone who pays the annual membership fee, completes an application and provides a liability waiver and shot records for the dog. Discounts are offered for more than one dog. “We have about 600 families who are members, and some of them have multiple dogs,” McCleary noted. “We have people from all over Lancaster County.” Members even come from out of state, including South Carolina, Wisconsin and Florida, when they are in town with their dogs to visit friends and family. Dog Park Mount Joy is a nonprofit organization, and a committee of about 20 people

has been instrumental in opening the park and keeping it open for five years, McCleary stated. The team of volunteers emphasized that all funding for Dog Park Mount Joy came from fundraising plus a matching grant from DCNR. “No taxpayer dollars were used to build this,” McCleary stated. She said that although the park charges an annual membership fee, it’s only to cover operating costs. “We’re not looking to make money on this,” she remarked. “We are looking to have a place for our dogs to run and have fun.” Ellie Garner brings her dogs, Molly and Perry. She lost her husband, Gene, this year, and the park is a place she can come for peace and fellowship. “Molly is blind now, so she mostly sits on my lap, and Perry just loves to be with the other dogs,” Garner said. Lani Coelho said her dogs, Bo and Rocco, enjoy seeing

their furry friends. “The dogs find their own little group of dogs, and they all hang out, while their owners get to talk with each other,” she said. “It’s a social outlet for both people and their dogs.” Although she’s been instrumental in fundraising for the park, Gail Fridy is among the few members who do not have a dog. Still, she said coming to the park brings her joy, and she credits the community with the park’s success. “We have thousands of followers on Facebook, in addition to our members,” she said. “The community support for this has just been incredible.” Dog Park Mount Joy will be participating in the Extraordinary Give on Friday, Nov. 19, and new members are always encouraged to join, McCleary emphasized. LancasterFunding.org, a nonprofit agency based in Lancaster, is seeking donations to help veterans age 68 and older with the expenses of purchasing food. Initially, the program will cover Lancaster County, but the goal is to expand throughout Pennsylvania and eventually to other states.

The agency was launched in February by veteran Dale Vega to supply veterans with groceries. The program is sponsored by donations from small businesses and individuals, and Vega collects donated funds and passes them on to veterans to buy groceries. In addition to donations of funds, the agency is seeking a

donated SUV or van so it can deliver groceries to veterans, as well as a donated computer to track its processes. Anyone interested in donating a vehicle, assisting the agency in creating a website, or donating funds may call 717-669-9323 or email dalevega2@outlook.com. Donations are tax-deductible.

Royer’s To Collect Holiday Cards, Coloring Pages

R077041

wsm.org

Royer’s Flowers & Gifts is collecting holiday cards and coloring pages for service members and veterans throughout November in each of its stores. Royer’s will present the collected items to the American Red Cross’ Holidays for Heroes program. Cards and coloring pages may be dropped off at any Royer’s store during normal business hours. Free coloring pages can be downloaded at www.royers.com/heroes. The Red Cross offers several guide-

lines for preparing the cards. People should use generic salutations such as “Dear service member” or “Dear veteran.” When writing in the card, people should express reasons why they are thankful for the service members or veterans. Those who have a personal connection, such as a family member who served, should add that information to the card. The cards should not be overtly religious, but messages such as “Merry Christmas” or “God bless you” are acceptable. Inserts such as glitter, photos and business cards should not be included. Also, the cards should not include personal information such as telephone numbers or home or email addresses. However, the cards should be signed with the giver’s name. Family-owned Royer’s has 16 stores in Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties, including one Stephenson’s Flowers & Gifts location in Harrisburg.
