Holiday Shopping Fair To Aid Pet Entities BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
More than 70 local businesses, crafters, vendors, and food sellers will come together to show their support for homeless pets at the eighth annual Holiday Shopping
Photo frames and other props may be downloaded and printed to build excitement for the Extraordinary Give, which will be held on Nov. 20.
“ExtraGive” Is Extraordinarily Important n a year when nonprofit organizations experienced significant losses of income opportunities, the Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive) hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) is of particular importance. For 24 hours, beginning at 12:00:01 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 20, individuals may make donations via credit card to participating nonprofits at www.extragive.org. To inspire generous donations, LCCF has solicited sponsors for more than $500,000 in matching funds and other prizes. “Every year we have a stretch goal. That allows people to ‘give extra,’” explained LCCF communications manager Aaron Spangler. With the assistance of the stretch goal, last year’s ExtraGive raised $10.9 million, for a total of $53.5 million since the event’s inception in 2012. The hope is that the 2020 ExtraGive will do as well or better.
“At its core, ExtraGive has been a digital event,” Spangler said. “From a pure mechanics standpoint, nothing has changed from past years, but it’s no secret that it won’t feel quite the same this year.”
More than 500 nonprofits will participate in the upcoming ExtraGive. To qualify, potential participants must serve Lancaster County
residents, be registered 501(c)(3) organizations in good standing, and have independent audits or reviews. In typical years, about 80 to 100 ExtraGive social events are held across Lancaster County during the 24 hours. However, this year, LCCF is requiring organizations to adhere to COVID-19 mitigation guidelines, so Spangler anticipates fewer socials. To encourage participants to adapt, LCCF will award a creativity prize after the event, and it has posted downloadable photo props and social media images that individuals may use at home at www.extragive.org/info/downloads. “At its core, ExtraGive has been a digital event,” Spangler said. “From a pure mechanics standpoint, nothing has changed from past years, but it’s no secret that it won’t feel quite the same this year.” Rather than host an in-person countdown to the close of the event, LCCF will present a live webcast from 5 p.m. to midnight. It will
“We’ve seen a lot of new faces. Our numbers have gone up about 20%,” Water Street Mission (WSM) president Jack Crowley said, speaking about the increase in people the organization has provided with food assistance this year. “HungerFree Lancaster is seeing that the numbers are going up across the community. Churches are stepping up to make sure those (organizations that) are here year-round

Spangler noted that when the shutdown was announced in March, the ExtraGive organizers knew that this year’s event would be different. “We were a little unsure about how everything was going to go,” Spangler commented, “but we have more sponsors this year than ever before.”

Fair and Pet Food Donation Drive on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. The event will be held in the space that previously housed the Bon-Ton department store at Park City Center, 142 Park City Center, Lancaster. This is a new venue for the Holiday Shopping Fair, as coronavirus mitigation guidelines necessitated finding a larger space. Booths will be spread throughout the store in order to promote social distancing. Additional precautions will be taken to encourage safety for everyone involved. Face coverings will be required, social distancing will be maintained, and hand sanitizer stations will be located at the entrances and throughout the space. Volunteers will count shoppers to maintain occupancy limits and will check the temperatures of everyone entering the room. The first 100 adult attendees will receive free goodie bags filled with special offers, coupons, and samples. There will be opportunities to enter prize drawings; attendees may collect their vendor passport

for COVID-19 control. Additionally, single beds rather than bunk beds were purchased to honor the dignity of guests. The beds can be spread out for social distancing. “We’ve experienced God’s providence in some of the design features,” Crowley commented. “We’ve been able to serve everybody that’s needed us so far. … We will find creative ways to address (greater needs).” To ensure that WSM is ready to feed its guests and clients this winter, WSM launched its annual Rescue Mission Food Drive (RMFD) on Nov. 1. The organization will make a special effort to collect 120,000 pounds of nonperishable food items by Sunday, Dec. 20. A list of suggested items has been posted at http://rescuemission fooddrive.org/. Glass containers are discouraged. Donations may be dropped off at Boscov’s at Park City, Javateas, the Lancaster city locations of Murray Insurance, and the Lancaster County locations of Sheetz, Weis Markets, AAA Central Penn, and M&T Bank. Large quantities may be delivered to the WSM food dock, 210 S. Prince St., Lancaster, on Mondays and Fridays from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Financial contributions may be made at https://wsm.org/make-an -impact/donate. aren’t getting overwhelmed.” Even with the additional help from community food pantries, WSM serves 400 meals a day in its dining hall and provides boxes of groceries to about 600 households every week. Crowley said he anticipates distributing more than 1,000 boxes for Thanksgiving and wants to ensure each one includes a turkey. WSM will not offer Christmas boxes, Crowley noted, as Lancaster County Project for the Needy has taken on that service. WSM is a part of HungerFree Lancaster as well as LanCo MyHome, the Lancaster County Homeless Coalition. More than 70 organizations are involved in serving poor and homeless individuals and families in Lancaster County. Three meals a day, seven days a week are available free of charge in Lancaster city, Crowley said. That enables WSM to focus on serving its long-term residents, those who stay in the emergency shelter, and those who participate in the outreach program. “We can have more than 200 people staying with us,” Crowley said. WSM had opened Providence Shelter this past winter, expanding WSM’s emergency housing capacity. The facility has a top-of-the-line air filtration system like those used in hospitals. It was installed because it works with the HVAC system to remove odors and promote the general health of occupants. It turns out that it is also what is recommended

game cards at the information desk. The Holiday Shopping Fair and Pet Food Donation Drive is open to people and pets, as it is presented by Furever Home Adoption Center, 5984 Main St., East Petersburg, and Pet Pantry of Lancaster County, 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster. “It is the perfect opportunity to get a head start on holiday gift-giving, knowing each purchase contributes to the well-being and homing of pets in need, said Furever Home CEO Mary Jo Meinzer. “(The vendors) feature a wide range of products: jewelry, soaps, cosmetics, animal-related products, artwork, apparel, home goods, holiday-themed gifts, and unique crafts. “In this unprecedented year, we recognize the need many people are facing each day, including taking care of their pets, added Pet Pantry CEO Melody Sanders. “We ... appreciate everyone’s participation and generosity as we seek to take care of homeless pets and our pet family members. Furever Home and Pet Pantry share a mission to relieve the suffering and meet the needs of homeless animals in Lancaster County. Both
organizations exist through public support and private contributions. Meinzer noted that annual events traditionally held in April, July, and September were canceled due to the pandemic, and the Holiday Shopping Fair will serve as the primary fundraiser for the pet-focused partners. To help stock the Feed the Need inventories at Pet Pantry and Furever Home, Holiday Shopping Fair attendees are asked to bring donations to the event. Everyone who brings items will be entered in a prize drawing. Requested items include dry or canned cat/kitten food, KMR Kitten Formula (powder or liquid), liquid bleach, laundry detergent, paper towels, and toilet paper. To learn more about the Holiday Shopping Fair and Pet Food Donation Drive or to participate, sponsor, or donate, readers may email fundraising chair Tina Krueger at flippers1@ aol.com. Information about the respective organizations is available at www.Furever HomeAdoptionCenter.com and www.PetPantryLC.org. A list of participating vendors may be found on the Vendor Events page on Furever Home’s website.

District, Museum Work Together Hands-on House, Children’s Museum of Lancaster recently announced a new partnership with Hempfield School District’s Library Media Program. Designed to increase access to the museum for the district’s students and their families, the partnership provides two family museum passes in each of the district’s seven elementary school libraries for checkout. By offering the opportunity for students to visit the Hands-on House with their families at no cost, this partnership is intended to execute the department’s mission to provide resources that support the curricula being taught in classrooms.
Hempfield School District’s Library Media Program already provides print resources and 24/7 digital resources. The family passes for Hands-on House Museum offer interactive exhibits that illustrate some of the classroom learning elementary students have experienced. Museum officials noted that they hope to establish more school library programs. For more information, readers may visit www.handsonhouse.org. To learn more about bringing museum passes to a school, readers may contact Handson House at info@handson house.org.

“Elf the Musical,” based on the film “Elf,” will play at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre from Thursday, Nov. 12, through Sunday, Jan. 3, 2021. This musical comedy follows Buddy the Elf in his quest to find his identity and help New York City remember the true meaning of Christmas. As a young orphan, Buddy crawls into Santa’s bag and winds up in the North Pole, where he is raised, unaware that he is human, until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to discover his identity. For the second time in his career, Kole Mitchell McKinley will play the part of Buddy the Elf. McKinley is from North Carolina and is a graduate of East Carolina University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical performance theater. Although new to the Dutch Apple stage, he appeared in Dutch Apple’s virtual cabaret series this spring.
Performances will be on Tuesday through Sunday evenings with selected matinees. There will be separate dinner and show ticket pricing for adults, for students ages 13 to 18 and for children under age 12. Special pricing is available for groups of 16 people or more. Tickets are now on sale and can be reserved by calling 717-898-1900, visiting www.DutchApple.com or stopping at the box office at 510 Centerville Road in Lancaster.
The No Longer Alone Family Support Group, supported by Landis Communities, will hold its next meeting on Sunday, Nov. 15, from 3 to 5 p.m. via Zoom. The group usually meets on the fourth Sunday of the month, but a change was made in November due to Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 26. The guest speakers for November will be Jonas and Barb Borntrager. Barb is author of the book “A Mother Held Hostage: My Journey With Jon.” The Borntragers’ presentation, titled “The
Story of Our Life With Jon,” will be followed by a time of sharing. The monthly meetings provide a place for those who have a loved one living with mental illness to learn and share their experiences. Meetings will be held via Zoom until further notice and will return to Landis Communities when it is safe to do so. For more information or to receive a monthly meeting reminder, readers may call 717-381-3599 or email JAlbright@landis.org by noon on Friday, Nov. 13.

With a storied past, the quaint charms of a European village and the outdoor recreation of a mountain sports destination, the town of Jim Thorpe is a must-see town tucked into the Pocono Mountains. Thorpe’s appeal, one must first look at its roots. Originally named Mauch Chunk, the town was pivotal to America’s industrial development as a main transport area for coal mining. The coal mined throughout what’s now known as the Pocono Mountains was transported from Mauch Chunk to Eastern markets via the Lehigh River, which helped to build the local economy and establish the community as an independent leader in a growing industrial market. Many of the transportation systems of the era, including canals, locks, dams and early gravity railroads, are still a strong part of the community’s culture today. The focus on coal and modern transportation methods brought early 19th-century entrepreneurs to the area, including Asa Packer, a Connecticut native and carpenter by

trade. Packer realized the opportunity the coal region held and used his skills to build and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the firm of A. & R. W. Packer, which built canal boats and locks for the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. Packer and his family settled in Mauch Chunk. Packer’s sights were set even higher on finding ways to use technology to transport the region’s rich coal resources. In the mid-1850s, Packer took control of a railway line from Mauch Chunk to Easton and connected railway lines to the coal mines in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties. Known as the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company, the line eventually extended into the Susquehanna Valley and New York state to connect with the Erie Railroad, effectively growing the region’s industrial reach even farther and establishing Mauch Chunk as a center of industrial commerce, tourism and entertainment. Today, visitors can get a glimpse of Packer’s success with a visit to the Asa Packer Mansion, a National Historic Landmark that overlooks the Lehigh River and Mauch Chunk National Historic District and that remains much like it did when first constructed in 1861 as a memorial to Packer and his accomplishments. Visitors can learn more about Packer’s successes as a businessman and his work as a philanthropist through guided tours held See Jim Thorpe pg 7

If you want to experience a little of what it was really like to live as a Packer you can stay at the Harry Packer Mansion Inn, just down the street from the Asa Packer Mansion. Harry Packer, the elder Packer’s son, lived in the Victorian mansion, complete with 15-foot ceilings, marble fireplaces and gilded mirrors reflecting the elegance of the Victorian age. Guests can enjoy period furnishings and artwork at the inn and even take part in special wine tastings or murder mystery weekends, a nod to the fact that the home was the inspiration for Walt Disney World’s “Haunted Mansion.” Take a self-guided walking or Segway tour to learn more about some of the historic downtown. Knight Booters Knock Off Top Seed Wilson
BY ARA GRIGORIAN
There are labels that are given to players and teams in the world of sports. One such label is “underdog.” When you’re the eighth-seeded team in a playoffs bracket with just that many teams, and you’re facing the top-seeded team on the road, most would say that you’re not the favorite in terms of odds. Odds? What are the odds that the 2020 Hempfield boys’ soccer team goes into Wilson and stuns the Bulldogs by a 3-2 score in the first round of the District Three Class 4A playoffs? Asked if he would categorize this win as an upset, Hempfield head coach Mark Ashley replied, “Yes it was - the number eight seed, beating the number one seed. “We actually didn’t know very much about them,” added the coach. “Wilson didn’t play many games outside of their league, so we weren’t able to talk to any of our opponents who might have played them.” The Bulldogs compiled a 10-0 regular season record, going 8-0 in the Berks County Interscholastic
Athletic Association. The Black Knights, who improved to 8-4-0 overall, drew first blood. Senior Hunter Green scored 22 minutes into the match. “Hunter put us on the board and Nate put us up 2-0 about 12 minutes later,” Ashley explained. Devvyn Fry cut the lead in half just two minutes into the second half. Schwartz scored his second goal of the night in the 67th minute. Gunner Swanger, Luke Kramer and Ben Ammon each recorded assists on the Hempfield scores. “With nearly three minutes left to play, they scored again,” Ashely said. “It was a frantic last few minutes. They would’ve had the momentum going into overtime. “When we were up by one goal, it could have easily been a four- or five-goal lead,” continued the coach. “We actually had some near misses - their keeper made one save that he pinned between the ground and the post.” Hempfield also had three shots that either hit or nearly missed the post. The Hempfield defense and midfield did an excellent job possessing the ball and using a judo strategy of using Wilson’s
strengths against them. “Their attempt to play very direct played into our hands,” said Ashley. “We were able to defend those long balls, using possession passing to exploit soft spots in their defense. “Also, they were running extra people forward and we were able to take advantage of that when they were weak at the back,” he added. Wilson did capitalize on their long balls, scoring both goals on long direct kicks. “Our midfielders played very well,” added the coach. “That was one of the strengths of our team. We would switch the field through our midfielders and play the ball through to our attackers. Our strikers got on those.” The Knights out-shot the Bulldogs 12-5. Noah Felty made three saves for Hempfield. CROSS COUNTRY The unbeaten boys’ cross country squad put forth a memorable performance in the District Three Class 3A championship race on Halloween, claiming victory with only 48 team points. In the district championships at Big Spring High School, the Knights topped York Suburban by 13 points. Cedar Crest finished third with 72 team points. Aidan Hodge crossed the finish line in fourth place, posting a time of 15:58.9 and Evan Eshleman’s time of 16:10.0 was good for ninth. Joe Fahrey came through in 11th place (16:12.0). Also helping Hempfield gain a strong finish
was Dale Winand (18th, 16:21.8), David Jackson (59th, 17:21.1), Isaiah Hollinger (60th, 17:21.2) and Sam Freedman (74th, 17:59.8). Penn Manor’s Thomas Graham, who won the league championship race in October, was the district champ at 15:41.5 - a solid 16 seconds ahead of second place. In the girls’ race Ella Wolfe led Hempfield with her 21st-place finish. She registered a time of 19:23. Molly Seibert (39th, 20:17.8), Hannah Killhoffer (46th, 20:31.3) and Lily Williams (51st, 20:39.3) also placed. VOLLEYBALL The undefeated and top-seeded Hempfield Black Knights played host to Elizabethtown on Thursday evening, November 5, in the first round of the District Three Class 4A girls’ volleyball playoffs. Hempfield came out on top 3-1, earning a spot in the district semifinals against fourth-seeded Cumberland Valley. Hempfield followed its 25-18 victory with a 25-13 defeat of its Lancaster-Lebanon League foe. The Bears roared back with a 2523 victory in the third set before Hempfield responded with a 25-17 triumph. Ally Cummings scorched five aces while Ashley Weaver and Morgan Minnich each served three aces. Cummings led the squad with 17 digs while Minnich tallied 12. Camille De La Torre registered 10 kills. Weaver and Minnich pitched in with nine and seven

kills, respectively, and Emily James had five kills. As usual, it was Emma Bitner leading the squad in assists with 30. She also had eight digs and one ace. FOOTBALL With a 21-point second quarter, Warwick remained undefeated with a 34-20 victory at Hempfield in a non-league football game on Friday, October 30. The Warriors improved to 7-0 overall while Hempfield fell to 3-4. Cameron Harbaugh’s second touchdown of the game cut the Warwick lead to 27-20 in the third quarter. Earlier in the game,
Harbaugh’s 14-yard touchdown toss to Jadin Jimenez tied the score at 6-6, which was how the first quarter ended. Caleb Schmitz caught two touchdown passes, including a 71yard pass from Joey McCracken, who finished with three touchdown passes and 187 aerial yards on nine completions. Schmitz was on the receiving end of 142 yards on five catches. Harbaugh’s night included 48 rushing yards and a touchdown on 18 carries while he threw for 140 yards on 13 completions. Jimenez caught a total of six passes for 88 yards.

Seventh- and eighth-grade Advanced Math students at Sacred Heart School in Lancaster are learning to program micro:bits this year. Block scheduling as a result of COVID-19 makes it possible to do this enrichment activity. Students have learned to program displays to read room temperature and to use variables to convert the temperature from Celsius to Fahrenheit. They use block coding, and Margaret Bila displays some students have switched to the micro:bit that she programmed in her JavaScript for their programs. Advanced Math class.

royers.com/heroes. The Red Cross offers several guidelines for preparing the cards. People should use generic salutations such as “Dear Service Member” or “Dear Veteran.” When writing in the card, people should express reasons why they are thankful for the service members or veterans. Those who have a personal connection, such as a family member who served, should add that information to the card. The cards should not be overtly religious, but messages such as “Merry Christmas” or “God Bless You” are acceptable. Inserts such as glitter, photos and business cards should not be included. Also, the cards should not include personal information such as telephone numbers or home or email addresses. However, the cards should be signed with the giver’s name.
