High school slates annual Holiday Shoppe

Hempfield High School, 200 Stanley Ave., Landisville, will hold its annual Holiday Shoppe on Wednesday, Dec. 4, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event will feature a variety of student-run businesses, and it will serve as an opportunity for classes in the Hempfield School District to share their efforts with staff members and the greater community.

During the event, the Franklin Gymnasium at the high school will be full of cash-only stands. Students will sell various goods at each stand, including wooden button ornaments, hand-painted decorative plates, holiday-themed mason jars, handwritten notecards, embroidered items, pet treats, customized picture frames and holiday gnomes, among many others.

Representatives of the Hempfield Foundation will operate a giftwrapping station at the Holiday Shoppe, and gift wrappers will receive donations throughout the day. All donations will benefit the foundation’s Help Thy Neighbor Fund, a program that was introduced in 2009 to support families in the school district that are experiencing financial difficulty. Members of Hempfield Sisterhood will also offer giftwrapping at the Holiday

Shoppe. Hempfield Sisterhood is an after-school club that strives to empower young women in the Hempfield School District by organizing community events and spreading positive messages on social media.

The annual Holiday Shoppe is a Hempfield High School tradition that began nine years ago. Every year, the event grows more popular in the community and features more student businesses than the previous Holiday Shoppe. Guests typically include other students and staff members in the school district and local residents, as well as many visitors who travel from beyond Lancaster County to shop for unique Christmas gifts. Twenty-two student businesses will participate in this year’s Holiday Shoppe.

In September, students began preparing for the Holiday Shoppe by holding classroom meetings to discuss ideas for new products and review their sales numbers from last year. Once the inventory was revised, the young entrepreneurs started collecting supplies and assembling their merchandise.

“The Holiday Shoppe is an opportunity for each student to use their individual strengths and skills to contribute to a project that benefits the whole class and community,” said Ann Jurgensen,

a learning support paraeducator at Hempfield High School. “I see the students enjoying the scale of this event. Showcasing their hard work to the community is also a big perk.”

The profits from the students’ stands benefit extracurricular activities for their classes such as field trips and classroom events, in addition to teachers’ budgets for school supplies. Students also

use a portion of their sales profits to buy supplies for the next Holiday Shoppe.

“Mini businesses really embrace the challenge to make a great product each year and have a successful day,” Jurgensen said.

“A successful day isn’t just measured in product sales - success is measured in the smiles generated and skills enhanced during this event!”

Lancaster County has a long history of unique traditions and community-centered events. From annual celebrations such as Maize and Snitz Fest in Lampeter and East Petersburg’s Blues Festival to county-wide programs like the Miss Lancaster County pageant, every town contributes to the area’s distinct culture. Many annual traditions have withstood the test of time and continue to be held today, but some events, such as Spooknacht, have been lost to time.

In 2024, few people have ever heard of Spooknacht. But prior to the 1970s, the annual event was highly anticipated by community members, and it involved every school in the county. According to archived photographs and clippings from old newspapers, Spooknacht took place every year around Halloween, and the event was organized by the former Lancaster Jaycees. One photograph from LancasterHistory’s archive, believed to have been taken during an event circa 1950, shows members of the Jaycees serving food

Serving seniors at Christmas

For more than 35 years, Helen Bechtold has been providing free Christmas dinner to seniors age 55 and up throughout the region. This year she’s back at it again - and she could use community help.

“This year, more than ever, we need community donations,” Bechtold said. “With the cost of living on the rise, help is needed more than ever.”

Donations are needed for both the meal fixings and additional items given to the seniors such as hygiene products and paper products. For the meal, each senior will receive turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, a vegetable and a dessert.

Meals will be available for takeout only at the Hambones Social Club of the Columbia Borough Fire Department, 726 Manor St., Columbia, from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 25.

Last year, Bechtold and

other volunteers, including longtime cook Sis Luzader, distributed more than 100 meals, and Bechtold expects to do even more this year.

“There is definitely a need for this,” she said. “The older population of this area is growing.”

She emphasized that the meal and additional items are available to anyone age 55 and older, no matter their economic status.

“This is not only for low-income seniors,” she said. “It’s for everyone 55 and up who is alone on Christmas or who just doesn’t feel like cooking. It’s for anyone who wants to come out and talk with someone and spend some time with other people while they pick up their meal.”

And although the meal is offered in Columbia, it is available for seniors anywhere.

“It’s a community effort,” Bechtold remarked. “It’s not only for people in Columbia. It’s for Lan -

caster, Maytown, Marietta, Washington Boro, anywhere in Lancaster County and beyond. I’ve had people from Virginia that come every year.”

Bechtold worked for the Columbia Senior Center for more than two decades, and her desire to serve seniors continued after her retirement.

“Seniors need socialization,” she said. “For a lot of people, Christmas Day is one of the hardest days of the year. This is a way to help.”

Preparation for the meal begins weeks in advance when Luzader starts some of the dishes and freezes them, Bechtold said.

“Sis does all the cooking. I love to cook, but I’m not cooking for a hundred and some people,” she said with a laugh. Instead, Bechtold takes care of soliciting donations and rallying volunteers to help.

“We have a great group of volunteers, some of whom have been here for a very long time,” she said, calling out individuals including Robin and Jack Gamby and Chuck Kloidt.

stated. “I try to connect them with community resources.”

She’s also started a group called Friends of Lancaster County for seniors who want to go out for lunch once a month.

Giving back to her community is just part of who she is, Bechtold said, adding that she sometimes feels like a celebrity when she’s out in public.

“Every time I go downtown, people say, ‘know you! You’re the Christmas lady!’” she said with a smile. “I give up part of my Christmas to do this, but it’s to make others happy. We want to make an impact on the community.”

from a vehicle with the words “Jay-cee Schpookmobile” painted on its side. The only information provided by the caption reads, “Official Lancaster Jaycees Schpookmobile, used during the Spooknacht celebration at Halloween.”

Julia Whitfield, a lifelong resident of Lancaster and manager of Mennonite Life’s visitor center, said she has no memory of Spooknacht. According to Whitfield, most members of Lancaster’s Mennonite community rarely celebrate Halloween or trick-or-treat, but instead hold a harvest celebration every fall. Pete Kingsley, one of the former members of the local Jaycees club, said he has no memory of Spooknacht either. After following a trail of old newspaper clippings and bits of information in Willow Street Church’s archive, local historian Eric Schubert discovered that

his acquaintance Linda Ross won the Spooknacht Queen contest in 1965.

“It was a big celebration at McCaskey High School that involved all the schools in the county,” said Ross, a Penn Manor High School alumna who now resides in Marietta. “It was accompanied by other activities, but the contest was a huge deal. It was driven by the Jaycees, and that year’s Miss Pennsylvania and Miss Lancaster always attended.”

Ross recalled that each Lancaster County high school held its own Spooknacht queen contest, during which contestants would display their talents at a school assembly. Students voted on a candidate to send to Spooknacht for the county-wide competition, and contestants in the final pageant showcased a talent and answered questions in front of a panel of judges.

Ross said she does not know when or why the annual event officially stopped taking place. The origins of Spooknacht began several decades before Ross won in 1965; Ross’ mother won the title of Spooknacht Queen in the 1940s. “I think women just became less interested in participating in beauty pageants,” Ross speculated.

Shop, dine and give back at annual Christmas Bazaar

For one-of-a-kind gift items and some delicious food, stop by the annual Christmas Bazaar at St. Peter Catholic Church. The event will be held at the church’s Parish Center, Second and Union streets in Columbia, beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7. It will also run on Sunday, Dec. 8, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“We have handmade items made by women of the parish, basket (giveaways), and White Reindeer items,” said Claire Storm, event volunteer.

“The White Reindeer table contains gently used and new items for purchase.”

Saturday’s festivities will feature the items for sale, and Sunday’s event will include a full-course dinner, served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The dinner menu will include ham, scalloped potatoes, a vegetable, a roll, coffee, tea or water, Storm said. “Desserts made by parishioners are also available for purchase,” she stated.

The dinner is open to the public and will be available for eat-in or takeout.

The bazaar is sponsored by the Parish Council of Catholic Women, with assistance from the men of

the parish. Proceeds benefit missions of the church.

“Proceeds support the parish activities as well

“Some people used it as a stepping stone for other contests. I’m a dancer, so I just entered everything I could.”

Lancaster County may never hold a Spooknacht celebration again, but despite vanishing with almost no trace, the bygone tradition will always hold a place in the area’s long history of unique festivities.

Church to dedicate new sanctuary

On the weekend after Thanksgiving, the congregation of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Lititz will dedicate its newly renovated sanctuary. After the church’s founding in 1904, the congregation began worshipping in rented rooms in Lancaster until the completion of its first church building, located at Plum and Clay streets, in 1906. As membership grew, the decision was made to move to Lititz, and the current facility was completed in 1993. The original plan was to utilize a multipurpose room for worship and add a permanent sanctuary at

some point in the future. That plan never materialized, so the decision was made in 2023 to refinish the multipurpose room as a permanent sanctuary and complete needed renovations of the building.

The new sanctuary has been turned 90 degrees on its original footprint to face east, with the arrangement of the organ, pews, baptismal font and altar designed to guide the eye toward the cross suspended above the altar. The original brass cross is now fitted into a custom-made wooden frame that better fits the space. Many local contractors, architects, designers,

and craftsmen contributed to this project, managed by Arthur Funk & Sons Inc. of Lebanon. New HVAC systems were installed by Clark Inc., wooden pews were crafted by Miller Church Interiors of New Holland, kneeler cushions were fabricated by Stump’s Upholstery Design, and the pipe organ was refurbished by Brunner & Associates, to name a few.

The Rev. Christopher Seifferlein, pastor of the congregation since October 2019, and the English District bishop, the Rev. Jeffrey Miskus, will lead a service of dedication on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 9 a.m. An

additional service and celebration will take place on Saturday, Nov. 30, at 6 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

Mount Calvary Lutheran Church is part of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, a biblical and liturgical church body. The mission statement of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church is “Confessing Christ in Word and Sacrament.”

The church is located at 308 Petersburg Road, Lititz. Worship services are held on Sundays at 9 a.m. followed by Sunday school and an adult Bible class at 10:30 a.m. For more information, visit www.lancaster lutheran.com.

Community warned of scams

Members of the public are encouraged to use caution to avoid scams during holidays.

Matt Schiltz, staff attorney for the Midwest regional office of the Federal Trade Commission in Chicago, said impostor scams are the most frequently reported type of fraud. For example, fraudsters may use artificial

intelligence to mimic the voice of someone known to the victim, such as a friend or family member.

Schiltz explained that fraudsters create new, more persuasive scams by improvising on old ones. In a recent scam, a person posing as a bank employee contacted potential victims and informed them
