Students from all levels of the Hempfield School District have been busy producing items for the Hempfield Holiday Shoppe. The bazaar-style event will be held on Friday, Dec. 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Franklin Gym at Hempfield High School, 200 Stanley Ave., Landisville. The Holiday Shoppe was created by Lauren Gardill, a paraeducator at the high school, in 2016. She had observed increased Hempfield student participation in a bazaar hosted by LancasterLebanon Intermediate Unit 13 for 1 8 years. “There were so many Hempfield students, classrooms, and teachers involved that I thought it would be nice to have our own,” Gardill related. Kristie Beatty, a special education teacher at the high school, related that the first Holiday Shoppe was held in the
board room of the district administration building. “But we quickly outgrew that,” she said. A total of 15 student-run minibusinesses, some with more than one table, will be part of the Holiday Shoppe. The products they will offer include embroidered apparel, beaded crafts, illustrated mugs, picture holders, holiday decorations, snow globes, magnets, stationery, artistic tiles, wine glass decorations, fabric banners, wooden signs, rustic tree slab art, tablets, gift packs, painted dishes, jewelry, cranberry jam, and canvas art. Additionally, members of The Grind, which makes and delivers coffee to students and staff members at the high school and administration building every Friday during the school year, will sell coffee, hot tea, doughnuts, chips, and hot dogs. “We get to vote on designs (for our mugs),” said junior Yaniel Colon. Christmas in the Village will be held at Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 7 and 8. Visitors are invited to enjoy Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum’s old-fashioned Christmas Village, which will be decorated for the season and full of the sights, sounds, and smells of an old-fashioned holiday. Visitors can walk through an authentic Pennsylvania Dutch crossroads village with living history re-enactors and experience what Christmas was like in mid1800s Lancaster County. In the Tavern, guests can see what is cooking on the hearth and view the whimsical cookie ornaments and unique Christmas tree on display in the corner of the room. On display in the Firehouse is the Putz, a traditional Moravian model village like those each household would have created just for the holidays. On Dec. 7 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., there will be a harpsichord and harp concert. On Dec. 8 at 12:30 and 2 p.m., a solo handbell musician will perform. Belsnickel, a traditional German character who identifies who has been naughty or nice, will be around both days to visit with families. There will be plenty of make-and-take crafts for children and adults alike. Children can write and post a letter to Santa Claus at his special local post box. Unique gifts will be available at the museum store. Weather permitting, horse-drawn wagons will take visitors on a tour of the property. The hours of the event are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 7 and noon to 4 p.m. on Dec. 8. Tickets are available online or at the gate. Landis Valley Associates members may attend for free. For additional information, readers may visit www.landisvalley museum.org.

Volunteers are needed to wrap holiday gifts at Park City Center during the Christmas season. Wrapping is sponsored by United Disabilities Services Foundation in support of the lives of people with physical and age-related disabilities. Gifts are wrapped for shoppers at the “S” Mall of Park City Center during all regular mall hours through Christmas. More than 500 volunteers from throughout the community are needed to provide coverage for all available shifts. A shift is typically two to four hours. Proceeds from the gift wrapping project will benefit United Disabilities Services Foundation, a Lancaster-based nonprofit which provides programs and services to help people with disabilities live more independent lives in the community. Funds raised will be put to work in programs such as adult day programming, custom wheelchair seating, and United Disabilities Services (UDS) service dogs. The foundation is still accepting volunteers to wrap. Individuals and volunteers 14 years of age or older from church, community, civic, or school groups or individuals are invited to register for various shifts. To volunteer, readers may contact Lori Spradling at 740-624-1866 or email lorispradling@ hotmail.com.

“A Celtic Christmas” from pg 1 Tom Knapp on fiddle, bodhran, and backing vocals. Various incarnations of band have been performing throughout southcentral Pennsylvania since 1999, but the current members have been together since 2015. The band has made several appearances on QVC, where it played with the Irish Tenors. On Dec. 8, the band will perform “A Celtic Christmas,” a special selection of Yule-themed music, which will include a variety of familiar Christmas carols, as well as holiday music from Ireland, Scotland, and England. Attendees who know the words will be welcome to sing along. There will also be plenty of traditional Scottish and Irish music, since a Christmas party in Celtic lands is never complete without an old-fashioned Irish music session and sing-along. The band’s repertoire ranges from the humorous - “Eggnog in the Jar” and “Miss Fogarty’s Christmas Cake” to the spiritual - “Angels From the Realms of Glory” and “O Holy Night.” Fire in the Glen has performed “A Celtic Christmas” at various local churches, retirement communities, and private functions. The group performed at Wayside last year to a standing-room-only crowd. Wayside Presbyterian is located between Hempfield High School and the QVC warehouse. For more information about Wayside or the Dec. 8 concert, readers may call the church at 717-898-1551 or visit http://waysidepc.org.

Holiday Shoppe from pg 1 noted that Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Christmas trees, and snowmen were among the winning designs. Gardill shared that while some of the mini-businesses are strictly classroombased, others have partnered with other classrooms or community businesses. A sewing class prepped towels, and students in Chris Hanusa’s and Andy Wise’s business marketing classes designed the event flyers. The marketing students will also help at the Holiday Shoppe. The tablets offered by The Knights of the Red Tablet were made at The Art Printing Company in Columbia. Special education teacher Jamie Berryhill takes groups of students out to the print shop, where they assemble the tablets.
“The students (in the mini-businesses) are making decisions and products, and they run the stands,” Beatty added. “We want them to learn those skills.” Interacting with the public is an important part of the mini-business experience, as it gives students an opportunity to practice their social skills. They also get to stretch their math muscles as they ring up purchases and make change. Other lessons are learned behind the scenes, and sophomore Daniel Haldeman is grateful for the experience. “I’ve taken (from this project) the idea of running a business: the finances part, talking with people, and having fun with it,” he said. “I would (eventually) like to start a landscaping business.” Seed money for the mini-businesses has come from several sources. Pampered Chef parties funded The Grind’s coffee venture, and Hempfield Education Association grants
helped others. Each classroom or business uses its proceeds in different ways. Some buy lunches when students make visits to community businesses, others purchase uniforms for students attending the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center, and others host end-of-year appreciation parties for their students. The offerings at the Hempfield Holiday Shoppe will be affordably priced. Cash will be accepted at all stands, and a few will take checks. Credit cards will not be accepted. The entrance to the Franklin Gym will be decorated with balloons for visitors to find easily. The venue is wheelchair-accessible, and the layout will be open. Out of respect for those with sensory processing difficulties, efforts have been made to plan an event that is not loud or intimidating. For more information about the Hempfield Holiday Shoppe, readers may email communications@hempfieldsd.org.

Ursula Wolfer, director of the Red Rose Figure Skating Club’s December show, has chosen for this year’s presentation a storyline that will focus on the trials and tribulations of being a teenager. The show is called “Bring It On,” and Wolfer said that the script and skating will add a few twists and turns to the musicals and movies of the same name. “We use the musical as our base, but we spin off in many directions,” explained Wolfer. The Red Rose Figure Skating Club show will be presented on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 1 and 5 p.m. at the Lancaster Ice Rink, 371 Carerra Drive, Lancaster. The show will feature more than 50 skaters, including beginners, adults, and ice hockey skaters. The storyline follows Campbell, played by Courtney Meyers, a cheerleader at Truman High School, a suburban school with a preppy leaning. “(Truman) has a cheerleading squad that makes nationals every year,” explained Wolfer, who noted that there is a

During the first act, Campbell learns that she has been redistricted to a different high school, Jackson High School. To her dismay, the city school has a dance squad rather than a cheerleading squad. Bridget, the mascot of the Truman cheerleading squad, played by Sophia Babar, is transferred to Jackson as well. Act two focuses on confidence, with the students from Jackson High School beginning to encourage each other and build each other up. Other characters in the show will include Danielle, played by Ellamay Cassidy; Kyler, played by Hannah Mencer; and Nautica, played by Livia Siefert. Other characters will include La Cienga, played by Carmen Guzman; Skyler, played by Anna Mayers; and Steven/Randall, played by Evan Bertz.
