In November, Lancaster-based screamo outfit Fragile Like Life After toured to celebrate the release of its latest EP, “A Long Look At A Short Distance.” The fall tour marks the band’s third time hitting the road this year, and the EP follows two albums and a single that Fragile Like Life After has released since 2021. The expedition served as an opportunity for the three-piece project to showcase the fresh material as it trod new ground -
creatively and literally. Fragile Like Life After comprises bassist Adrian Alicea, guitarist Max Ludewig and drummer Chris Copeland, who formed the band in 2021. The three Millersville University alumni met through school a few years prior, and they had already become close friends by the time the band took shape. Volunteers sought for Christmas Bird Counts The Lancaster County Bird Club will sponsor the Lancaster County Christmas Bird Counts. Citizen scientists may participate in Solanco on Sunday, Dec. 15; in Lancaster on Sunday, Dec. 22; in the Christmas Bird Count for Kids at the Lancaster County Central Park on Dec 22; or in Lititz on Sunday, Dec. 29. Since 1900, the National Audubon Society has conducted a bird census called the Christmas Bird Count, with much of the legwork done by volunteers. Birders of all skill levels may participate, including backyard bird watchers. The data collected has been used for studying bird population trends, migration patterns, and con-
servation policy. T he C hristmas Birds Count for Kids will be held in collaboration with the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation. It is designed to teach children about birding and volunteering as a citizen scientist. All children are required to register with the Parks Department by calling 717295-2055, and all kids must be accompanied by an adult. Adults without kids are also welcome. Additional questions about the Christmas Bird Count for Kids may be directed to John Lahr at 717205-3030 or johnlahr324@ gmail.com. For all the Counts, backyard birders are asked to register with the contact person

Manos House from pg 1 re h a b i l i t a t i o n f a c i l i t y located at 1290 Prospect Road, Columbia, is one of many efforts to confront the stigma surrounding recovering addicts and help young men pursue healthy and fulfilling lives. Manos House is one of three programs offered by nonprofit organization Dr ug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Services, Inc. (DARS). The program serves young men between 14 and 20 years old who are experiencing substance abuse disorder as well as many clients who may have committed crimes as a result of their addictions. Manos House residents typically live on campus for four to six months, during which time they have access to a variety of services and resources to help them on the road to recovery. “ We focus on all the underlying issues that have led a young man to seek drug use as a coping strategy or a means to relieve

emotional and mental pain,” said Chris Runkle, executive director of DARS. “Early on, we fell victim to the same stance as society: Don’t talk about substance abuse addiction. We realized that philosophy is against our mission; we want people to know what we’re doing and how we do it.” The residential treatment center was established in 1972, and it became incorporated as a DARS service program in 1975. Manos House operated in Lancaster city for several decades until the program moved to its current facility in 2012. The nonprofit decided to move from its former location to expand its programming and square footage, as its two downtown facilities were consistently at full capacity. T he move to Columbia allowed Manos House to offer clients additional resources and a full roster of services,
including the addition of a computer lab, a kitchen for cooking classes, an art therapy room and a music studio. The Manos House program incorporates various academic resources and amenities designed to give residents access to creative outlets. The facility recently added a woodworking shop, where clients can learn skills such as home repair and carpentry. “Our core belief is that our clientele’s needs are always changing. For us to be adaptable and inclusive to what their needs are, we must continue to expand our programming to new o u t l e t s ,” R u n k l e s a i d . “Maybe it’s an opportunity for guys to build a demolition derby car to develop the self-confidence and communication skills that will lead them to be successful young men in the community.” For more information, visit https://manoshouse. com.

tradition this year: “Journey to the Land of the Sweets: A Nutcracker Tale.” Created and choreographed by Katie Reiter, former assistant director of Hudson Youth Ballet and professional ballet dancer, this ballet is a new twist on an old tale that tells a slightly different story. The story does not include Clara, a Mouse King or even a Nutcracker.
Instead, audiences will be transported into the dreamlike world that is “The Land of the Sweets.” Fifty student ballet dancers from nine studios across Lancaster have been rehearsing since July to bring Reiter’s vision to life. There will be four opportunities to see their work on display at the Hempfield See Ballet pg 5

Scudner said the club decided to add the program after noticing how many younger siblings of skaters would often sit in to watch the class. In addition to equipping children with the basic skills needed to skate on the ice, the Ice Explorers program incorporates games and activities such as making snow angels and drawing pictures. “A lot of ice rinks don’t offer classes for children this young, but we’ve had a great turnout. The series is a way to gently ease

The run time for the evening and matinee shows is 50 minutes, while the sensory-sensitive show will run approximately 35 minutes. The 12-track release show cased Ludewig’s glittery guitar melodies and Alicea’s poignant delivery of spoken-word poetry; the dreamlike combination is anchored by Copeland’s vigorous but surgically precise drumming. i t s s o phomore a l b u m , “(I Don’t Think They’re Coming).” The band became an active player in Lancaster’s music scene and the East Coast DIY circuit with frequent local shows and its first tour, and the 10-track album reflects Fragile Like Life After’s increasingly cohesive sound. “(I Don’t Think They’re Coming)” introduced gripping vocals screamed by Alicea to Ludewig’s lead vocals and the driving riffs that defined its debut. Three years of touring and recording sharpened Fragile Like Life After’s edge and allowed its members to refine both their sound and their dynamic as a band. The trio’s live shows became increasingly electric; Fragile Like Life After’s sets typically feature Ludewig’s rowdy engagement of the crowd while Alicea and Copeland remain individually locked in an intense showdown with their respective instruments.

The band’s latest EP incorporates its new approach to writing and performing, featuring more lyrical contributions from bassist Adrian Alicea.
Chris Copeland’s intense drumming anchored the band’s first show of the tour.
“A Long Look At A Short Distance” is the product of three years of hard work as a band and the personal growth of its members, and the five-song EP separates itself from Fragile Like Life After’s earlier releases with an entirely new approach. Although shorter than the band’s first two albums, “A Long Look At A Short Distance” doesn’t waste a second; the songs are sequentially structured and work together to tell one story. “It felt like the most collaboratively we’ve ever written something,” Alicea said. “I filled in on bass, but my contribution was more lyrical. Max took initiative in writing the guitar riffs, and Chris helped structure the songs and flesh them
out.” “Sonically and lyrically, (‘A Long Look At A Short Distance’) is a lot more concise than the other stuff. The songs flow into each other,” Copeland added. “From the start, it was (Alicea’s) idea to write something that doesn’t stop,” Ludewig said. “They said to me at one point, ‘I don’t want to talk during our set at all. I want to say hello, play our songs and say goodbye. (‘A Long Look At A Short Distance’) is not just five songs; this is a piece of work.” To listen to “A Long Look At A Short Distance” or for more information, search for “Fragile Like Life After” on Spotify, Instagram or Facebook.
