Lancaster band wins Country Rock Group of the Year award

Tim Farrell, one of the leaders of the Lancaster Prayer Breakfast, which was held for the second year on Nov. 3, said that when the committee organized under the Leaders of Faith Foundation, the goal was to make the event unique, with prayer as the key component. The group decided to focus on six areas - business, government, art/media, education, family, and church - and ask a community leader to lead prayer on each of those segments. Each speaker asked

table groups to pray on a subject and then concluded by leading the gathering of more than 400 in prayer. Master of ceremonies Tracey C. Jones, president of Tremendous Leadership and T3 Solutions, opened the event, saying, “The Lancaster Prayer Breakfast endeavors to further the rich heritage and spiritual guidance handed down by the Founding Fathers … and magnify Jesus Christ through unified prayers.” Worship music was provided by Dave Ross, pastor of worship ministries at Calvary Church, See Prayer breakfast pg 3

On Oct. 22, Lancaster-based music group The Jess Zimmerman Band won the Country Rock Group of the Year award at the ninth annual Josie Music Awards in Nashville. The Jess Zimmerman Band is led by Jess Heitz, who is accompanied by guitarist Joe Barszowski, bassist John Knobler and drummer Joe Mattis. This is the second year the outfit has been nominated for awards at the ceremony, which

was hosted at the famous American country music venue the Grand Ole Opry. Last year, The Jess Zimmerman Band received the Album of the Year award for its debut album “Breathe.” This year, in addition to being nominated for multiple awards, the band performed during the ceremony. Out of nearly 1,000 applicants, only 10 artists were selected to play at the event. “It was really one of the biggest highlights of the year,” Heitz said. “The Grand Ole Opry is iconic for country music.” The Jess ZimmerSee Rock group pg 5

Prayer breakfast from pg 1 “God help us think clearly, act rightly, and do so in a spirit of love,” he prayed. Beth Haldeman, assistant to the superintendent of the Cocalico School District, prayed for education, with special attention to families, atmosphere, students, teachers, and staff. She specifically prayed for schools of all types to be “places of enrichment and nourishment.” Walt Mueller, president of the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding, spoke about sin, brokenness, and the need for a redeemer and new life, and he pointed out current cultural issues facing families. “We are here by God’s design in this moment,” he said. “We pray that You would fill all families with a hunger to live Your will … to understand our responsibilities before You. May we seek to live out Your kingdom way in our families to Your glory,” he said. Kevin Eshleman, lead pastor of Ephrata Commu-

Don Hoover, retired CEO and current facilitator of Business Community Network, prayed for the business community, noting that Jesus said, “I must be about My Father’s business.” “It’s crucial for us to understand God’s purpose and will for us as individuals,” he said. Sen. Ryan Aument asked attendees to join him in lifting up the government - elected and appointed officials, first responders, and the military. “Pray for vision, courage, perseverance, and strength to serve in love and lift up their families and to preserve their marriages,” said Aument. Doug Myer of WDAC prayed for art and media, quoting Franklin Roosevelt’s address to Congress that concluded with the Four Freedoms Speech. Myers focused on the freedoms of speech and expression of every person to worship in his own way.

Marching band from pg 1 dancing along,” said Ceresini. Throughout the season, the members of the marching band worked hard to push the program to a level of success that had not been accomplished at Hempfield in nearly a decade. On Oct. 21, the Marching Knights traveled to the University of Maryland to compete in the Bands of America Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship. After all of the participating bands played in the morning, the top 12 groups were selected to perform again for the finals at the end of the competition. Hempfield’s band qualified for finals for the first time since 2014 and finished in sixth place after the second performance. “This year’s group was

great at working hard and giving effort no matter if they were experiencing success or failure,” Ceresini said. “The kids were committed to trusting they were going to get where they needed to. Even if something didn’t go well, they got better quickly.” The season concluded with a performance at Warwick High School on Nov. 4. for the Cavalcade of Bands Championships. The Marching Knights presented their show “Mad Science” to earn a final score of 96.2 in the Yankee Open Class, the highest score achieved by Hempfield since 2019. Ceresini credited a large part of this year’s success to the marching band’s

Creative Works of Lancaster will bring its sock puppets back to the stage this December with the return of “A Christmas Carrie,” featuring an original script by playwright Erich Goldstein. Performances will take place on Friday, Dec. 15, at 6, 8, and 10 p.m. in the theater at Zoetropolis, 112 N. Water St., Lancaster. Based on the 1976 film version of “Carrie” - which is rated R - it combines the telekinetic prom queen with the time travel of “A Christmas Carol” and reimagined versions of musical hits. This production is not recommended for children. Rock group from pg 1 man Band performed songs from an album released in May, titled “Be The Light.” “The idea behind ‘Be The Light’ was putting together something that puts you in a good place when you listen to it,” said Heitz. “It’s bright and bold, and it shines through.” The group began to work on the album at the end of 2022, and it will be submitted for the 2024 Josie Music Awards. The Josie Music Awards specifically highlight independent artists, as in musicians who are not signed to a record label. Without a label,

independent artists like The Jess Zimmerman band manage their own recording, producing, touring and marketing. “Breathe” and “Be The Light” were both recorded at Omnisound Studios in Nashville, and Heitz and her bandmates have remained busy with and performing shows throughout the East Coast, Midwest and South. Following The Jess Zimmerman Band’s success at last year’s Josie Music Awards, the group had opportunities throughout the year to share the stage with artists

such as Shania Twain, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Marshall Tucker Band. “It’s been quite a year,” said Heitz. “Winning Album of the Year helped set the tone for 2023. Going into 2024, who knows what’s in store?” Although The Jess Zimmerman Band has multiple gigs booked in other states, the group will perform several shows in Lancaster and York counties in the new year. Ephrata Cloister to offer Lantern Tours Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will host Lantern Tours on Wednesday, Dec. 27, through Saturday, Dec. 30. Each day, tours will leave the visitor center every half hour, with the first tour at 6 p.m. and the last tour at 8 p.m. When planning a trip nowadays, people often rely on Tripadvisor for reviews, but in the 1750s, it was word of mouth or written communication that people turned to for advice. During the Lantern Tours, attendees will hear reviews to learn what others thought of the founder of the Ephrata Cloister, Conrad Beissel, and his followers. The Ephrata Cloister Student Historians will bring these stories to life.

Ephrata Cloister Student Historians rehearse for the Lantern Tours.

Attendance is limited, and advance tickets are required by calling 717733-6600 or visiting https:// bit.ly/3SMzBI4. There is a

discount for seniors, students ages 6 to 17 and Ephrata Cloister Associates members. Admission is free for those 5 years of age and younger.
