Nine months have elapsed since the first shutdown order was announced. For Christians who have not felt safe to attend church in person during those months, it has been a long time since they have participated in Holy Communion. To remedy that and with Christmas approaching, the leaders of Wayside Presbyterian Church, 600 Stony Battery Road, Landisville, came up with the idea of serving the Eucharist drive-through-style. “At this difficult time, our outreach and worship and music teams felt this might be another way to offer support to those missing the sacrament and offer this vehicle to receive not only for our own congregation, but as a gift to the community, for Christmas,” explained the Rev. Dr. Stephen Fritz. “Ideally, the holidays bring people together in a physical location
in community with others, but these times call for flexibility and adaptation, something Wayside is well positioned to do.” The event will be held in the afternoon on Sunday, Dec. 20. At 9:30 or 11 a.m., interested participants are invited to visit www.waysidepc.org to tune in to Wayside’s livestreamed Sunday morning services and to hear updates to the afternoon Communion plans. The traditional-style service is held first and is followed by the contemporary service featuring the Grace Notes praise band. If all goes as scheduled, vehicles may enter the church parking lot between 2 and 4 p.m. Drivers will be directed to maintain safe traffic flow. Individuals should not exit their vehicles, and each person above age 2 should wear a
protective face mask that properly covers their mouth and nose. Those who are not feeling well or have a high temperature are asked to stay home. Fritz will approach a window at each vehicle and offer prepackaged wafers and grape juice, saying, “The Body of Christ, broken for you; the Blood of Christ, shed for you.” Participants may respond, “Amen.” Fritz will step away from the vehicle, at which point participants may close the window and partake of the Eucharist in the presence of the pastor. As vehicles exit the parking lot, a station will be available where individuals may request prayer, obtain information about Wayside Presbyterian Church, or leave an offering to continue the
church’s ministry. Ever since houses of worship began to reopen in accordance with COVID guidelines, Wayside has offered attendees the choice of participating in limited in-person gatherings following all COVID safety protocols or connecting online through the church website. Various live and recorded programs for children, youths, and adults, such as sermon summaries, daily devotionals, Bible studies, Grace Notes concerts, and interactive lessons for families, may be accessed under the “Media” tab on the website. For more information about Wayside or the drivethrough Communion, readers may visit the aforementioned website or call 717-898-1551.

Trinity United Church of Christ, 450 W. Main St., Mountville, invites community members to stop by and light a candle on Sunday, Dec. 20, between 4:30 and 6 p.m. The event is intended to offer a safe place for children,
youths, and adults to express sorrow, anger, and fear and to seek comfort and hope. This is not a worship service nor will it be specifically religious, although people will be available to offer prayers if requested.
Contactless Amish Farmland Tour Offered The Amish Experience, a guided bus tour company in Lancaster County founded in 1959, has announced that in order to serve those visitors who are concerned about getting on a bus with strangers, it has developed a completely contactless option for the traditional 90-minute guided Amish farmland tour. A small FM radio transmitter was installed in the Amish Experience bus, so that everything the guide says into his or her hands-free microphone in the bus is broadcast over a vacant frequency on the FM dial, thus allowing customer to drive in the safety and comfort of their own vehicles, following the bus down the scenic back roads, with the live, in-the-moment narration of the guide coming through their car’s speakers. The only thing a customer must have in their vehicle to enjoy the contactless option is an FM radio. There is a fee per car. People may make a reservation online and check in on their phone upon arrival, so no actual tickets are exchanged and the guest does not have to enter any buildings in order to take the tour. They are isolated from people they do not know, yet they can have a fully guided, narrated tour of Lancaster County farmland. A stop along the way is made at an Amish roadside stand and farmbased shop, for people to shop for locally-made crafts, baked goods and treats, if they choose.
The contactless Amish farmland tour will be available for a noon departure on Saturday, Dec 19; Tuesday, Dec. 22; Wednesday, Dec. 23; Thursday, Dec. 24; Saturday, Dec. 26; and Sunday, Dec. 27. Reservations must be made online at www.amishexperience.com. The Amish Experience is located at 3121 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many people to embrace new forms of resilience and exercise their creativity. Two Lancaster leaders, Patience Buckwalter and Krista Martin, are among those who have adapted to the changes caused by the pandemic. Buckwalter is executive director of the Grape Leaf Empowerment Center, and Martin is Eastern Mennonite Missions’ (EMM) Kingdom Team (K-Team) director. Stay-at-home orders, social distancing requirements, and capacity restrictions have reduced the ability of community services like the Grape Leaf Empowerment Center, which serves refugee and immigrant families. COVID-19 realities also altered the way the K-Team program ran this summer. KTeams are weeklong, summer discipleship and cross-cultural experiences offered in small urban centers in the U.S., specifically for youth groups. Due to the pandemic, teams were not able to stay in the same residence, and outreach opportunities were either canceled or limited in scope. During the week of Aug. 3 to 7, Mountville Mennonite

Eastern Mennonite Missions Kingdom Team director Krista Martin helps to sort supplies as part of an outreach activity with Mountville Mennonite Church.
Duke Street. Buckwalter noted that the next goal was to fundraise in preparation for buying a camper/RV that would be used to bring services directly to communities where client families reside. Martin said she hopes to see K-Team participants connect on a relational level with refugee families, even though that can be difficult during a pandemic. The Grape Leaf Empowerment Center provides a safe
gathering place for local refugee and immigrant community members where they can receive support, connect with one another, and access resources in Lancaster city. It was founded by Buckwalter in 2018 to bridge the gap between refugee and immigrant families by providing a hub of services, including culturally sensitive case management and resources for as long as they are needed.
Church’s K-Team creatively partnered with Grape Leaf Empowerment Center to serve the refugee community of Lancaster. Because of limited access to resources and services, the Mountville youth group helped the Grape Leaf Empowerment Center move supplies out of James Street Mennonite Church and into a pop-up center at Trinity Lutheran Church on South

The Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium hosted a Home Run Derby for first responders and members of the military, including veterans, on Oct. 24. The event, coordinated by the Barnstormers, raised over $3,000 for local first responder organizations. Contestants were given 15 swings each with a wooden bat. At the end of the preliminary rounds, the top three in each category - fire, police, EMT, and military - took part in a two-minute speed round. A winner in each of the four groups was determined, and
