Mosaic Completed At St. Leo The Great Open Houses Planned For Jan. 26 And 28 It was four years in the making, but a ceremony on Dec. 6 capped the celebration of the 50th anniversary of St. Leo the Great Catholic School that began in 2015. During the event, the Very Rev. Peter Hahn, pastor of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, pronounced a blessing on a mosaic that was recently completed in the school’s lobby. Art teacher Kathryn Hemlick designed the mosaic, known as the Seven Sacrament Mosaic, and oversaw its construction, investing more than 600 hours in the project. With the help of more than 350 students, 14,000 pieces of glass were carefully set in place, with the final image depicting the efficacious signs of the Catholic Church. The efficacious signs represent the

seven sacraments that are believed to be the lifeforce of God, reaching down and offering the gift of grace, said school principal Christine McLean. “The mosaic art form signifies that God can transform brokenness into beauty. Now that is worth celebrating,” she added. About 50 people, including students in second, seventh, and eighth grades, attended the blessing of the mosaic. Students’ parents also attended, and McLean reported that one parent, visibly moved by the artwork, said, “As soon as you come into our parish school and see this mosaic hit you, you see our identity. God is a merciful God who wants to affect our lives in a personal and powerful way.” Hemlick was also touched by the event and expressed her gratitude for the support of the school community. “This really was a highlight of my life’s

Sweet Pea Project Launches Book Drive Sweet Pea Project recently launched the “this is ten” book drive, which will continue through Tuesday, Dec. 31. The collection is being held in honor of the 10th birthday of Max, son of Sweet Pea Project board secretary Nicole Vasquez. Vasquez said that, when Max was stillborn a decade ago, she received a book that had been donated in memory of Madeline, daughter of Sweet Pea Project founder and president Stephanie Cole. This gift connected her to the Sweet Pea Project and began her service to the organization. Since Vasquez was connected to the organization through the gift of a book, organizers thought it would be fitting to honor Max’s 10th birthday and a decade of his mother’s service to the community through the Sweet Pea Project by collecting books. Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) will hold its 10th annual Glen Lapp Memorial Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 4, and Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020, at Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS), 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The tournament will be divided into two divisions with a maximum of 20 teams playing in each division. Division B will play beginning at 9 a.m. on Jan. 4, and Division A will play beginning at noon on Jan. 11. The tournament, which is held every January, commemorates the death and honors the life of Glen Lapp, a 1987 LMHS graduate and one of the school’s 2019 Alumni of the Year. The event benefits the Glen D. Lapp Endowment for Student Aid. Glen was killed on Aug. 5, 2010, when he and nine others were ambushed after holding an eye and dental clinic in a remote area of Afghanistan. Glen, who was a nurse, had first traveled to Afghanistan in October 2008 through Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in partnership with International Assistance Mission. To reach the village where the clinic was held, members of the group first flew, then drove, and then walked, packing their equipment on hired horses. Before becoming a nurse, Glen attended Eastern Mennonite

from pg 1

University (EMU), where he played volleyball and earned a degree in math. Following graduation from EMU, Glen worked as the dorm supervisor at LMHS and coached volleyball. He later completed a Johns Hopkins accelerated course to become a registered nurse in one year. During his adult life, Glen lived in six states, serving people from all walks of life as a registered nurse. He worked at Lancaster Regional Hospital and for the Traveling Nurses Association, which took him to New York City and Oregon. He also worked in a government clinic on a Native American reserve in Supai, Ariz. The tournament is organized by Mark Leaman and Kevin Groff, with help from Glen’s cousin Joel Lapp. Leaman and Groff played volleyball for LMHS and were coached by Glen in 1992 and 1993. The initial tournament held in Glen’s honor was organized by his cousin Tim Lapp. From the tournament and other donations, the endowment has received almost $50,000. Funds are used to provide scholarships to immigrant and refugee children at the school. Play during the tournament is “Glen-style,” which means there are no officials. Glen-style play will be explained to the teams prior to each tournament.

A few years ago, in honor of Madeline’s 10th birthday and the 10th birthday of Mark, son of treasurer Beth Gauthier, Sweet Pea Project held a blanket drive, reflecting back to the organization’s beginnings with blankets. Community members are invited to contribute to the effort. For every donation of $10, a copy of “Still” or “to linger on hot coals” will be donated to a hospital to be given to a newly bereaved parent. Each hospital will receive five copies of each book for a total of 10 books, so a donation of $100 will provide an entire box of books for one hospital. A bookplate will be placed inside the front cover of each book, and the name of the child whose loved ones contributed will be handwritten on the bookplate, dedicating the donation in his or her memory. Anyone who donates a complete box may designate the hospital to which the box will be donated. Sweet Pea Project encourages parents to consider using the book drive as a way to involve their family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers in their child’s remembrance over the holidays. A list of all the hospitals that receive the books will be made available so that supporters are able to see just how far their generosity - and their child’s legacy - have reached. Donations in increments of $10 may be made with a credit card or bank account via PayPal at www.paypal.com. Community members may also mail checks to

Hempfield High School hosted a daylong event for its 2,300 high school students on Oct. 16. Called Super Wednesday, the day consisted of speakers, presentations, career exploration opportunities, group activities, and PSAT/NMSQT testing. The overarching goal of this day was to better familiarize students with various career options to help them identify a pathway to success. In the morning, freshman, sophomore, and junior students listened to keynote speaker Dan Jurman, the CEO of Lancaster County’s Community Action

jockey, an electrician, a physical therapist, a college professor, a labor and delivery nurse, a welder, and a social worker. Juniors reported to classrooms to participate in PSAT/NMSQT testing to help them identify what they have learned in high school and what they will need to succeed in postsecondary education, should they select this pathway. Additionally, the PSAT/NMSQT test is used for a variety of recognition programs, including eligibility for potential scholarships. Seniors were given many opportunities to address their own specific college or career needs. They chose from the

St. Anne School in Lancaster held its fourth annual Third-Grade Historical Wax Museum on Nov. 4. Third-graders portrayed historical figures, including Dr. Seuss, St. Michael the Archangel and Helen Keller, and presented memorized biographies of these people. The students had been working on this project for the last two months. It is the creation of third-grade teacher Karen Henry. The students were each required to read a book from the Penguin Books “ Who Was?” series, which tells the stories of trailblazers, legends, innovators and creators. The students used this information to write a paragraph highlighting the important details of their subject’s life. They

memorized their paragraph and also worked in class to create a background mural for their figure. Murals ranged from Benjamin Franklin’s kite in the air to a blue sky for Amelia Earhart. With help from their parents, students created costumes to wear in the wax museum. The wax museum was constructed in the gym, where students had a designated area with their mural behind them and a podium with a “play” button in front of them. Parents, faculty members and fellow students visited the museum. When a student’s play button was pushed, the student came to life and recited his or her memorized informational biography.

Volunteers will drive a van provided by St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church to pick up and drop off senior citizens in need of a ride to the meal. Bechtold and Luzader stressed the fact that the event is made possible thanks to donations from area businesses, organizations, and individuals. Both

Pennsylvania CARES, Susquehanna Valley EMS demonstrates its commitment to saving lives by strengthening the links in the OHCA chain of survival. Pennsylvania CARES is a statewide partner of the Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES), a national cardiac arrest registry that allows communities to measure bystander and 911 response, including information about bystander CPR and AED application, telephone CPR, and EMS response. Using this information, EMS agencies can discover promising practices and implement new programs to improve emergency care for patients in their communities. Participation in a national registry is recommended by the Institute of Medicine. Recipients of this year’s

Pennsylvania CARES Award successfully participated in the registry for the 2018 calendar year and are commended for collecting data, in collaboration with and on behalf of BLS, first responder, and community partners, to measure outcomes, improve the quality of care, and save lives. Susquehanna Valley EMS’ dedication to collecting OHCA data has helped strengthen the collaboration between 911 centers, first responders, EMS agencies, and hospitals, with the ultimate goal to improve OHCA survival rates. For more information on CARES and the benefits of cardiac arrest data collection, readers may visit https://mycares.net and https://smemsc.org/ index.php/programareas/138-2/. Univest Financial is hosting its eighth annual Caring for Community Giveaway, which will award a $5,000 donation to a local nonprofit organization. Univest is asking the public to determine which local nonprofit deserves financial support. Individuals may nominate a local nonprofit organization by submitting the name of the nonprofit in the comment section of the post promoting the Caring for Community Giveaway on Univest’s Facebook page or Instagram account or by tweeting the name of a nonprofit to @UnivestCorp using #CaringForCommunity. Each comment or tweet will count as one entry. An individual may submit one entry per day, per voting method. The winning nonprofit will be randomly selected from all entries. Entries for the giveaway will be accepted through Tuesday, Dec. 31. To be eligible, the nonprofit organization must be registered as a 501(c)(3) and must operate within Univest’s service area, which includes the Pennsylvania counties of Berks, Bucks, Chester, Cumberland, Dauphin, Delaware, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Montgomery, Northampton, Philadelphia, and York. Complete rules are listed at w w w. u n i v e s t . n e t / c a r i n g f o r community. Previous winners of the Caring for Community Giveaway were Quakertown Community Outreach, Logan’s Heroes Animal Rescue, Hope Against Heroin, St. Isidore School, the Granny Project, Vets for Vets, and Bucks County SPCA. Headquartered in Souderton and founded in 1876, Univest and its subsidiaries provide a fullrange of financial solutions for individuals, businesses, municipalities, and nonprofit organizations primarily in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Univest delivers these services through a network of more than 50 offices in southeastern Pennsylvania extending to the Lehigh Valley and Lancaster, as well as in New Jersey and Maryland, and at www.univest.net.

The Lancaster Center of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (LCDHH), 2270 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, will offer beginner noncredit American Sign Language (ASL) classes from 6 to 8 p.m. from Tuesday, Jan. 7, through Thursday, Feb. 27. Students will meet once per week on either Tuesday or Thursday. There is a cost per student, plus a fee for books. All courses will be taught by instructors who are deaf. For details or to register, contact 717-207-9822 or lcdhh@ bdhhs.org. Individuals may also stop by the office for an application.
