Succulents are ideal for arid conditions or for gardens where low-maintenance plants are desired.

Succulents Don’t Suck Your Summer Fun Time Low-Maintenance Landscaping That’s Attractive & Easy

Now is the time of year to focus on outdoor landscaping projects. One popular project involves redesigning the front yard or backyard to include an array of different flowers and foliage. While many people gravitate to the flashy and colorful annuals on display at nurseries and home centers, you may want to consider adding some succulents to your home landscape.

Succulent plants can be a boon to a homeowner who does not have the time or resources to maintain plants. Succulents get their name from their primary function, which is drawing up and storing water. They are able to thrive in arid conditions, and there are more than 300 different types, including some exotic species. The advantages to planting succulents are many. Because they

store water in their stems, roots and leaves, this reduces the number of times an owner must water them, and they can go several days between waterings. Succulents, like cacti, that have few if any leaves, are perhaps best at managing water because they lose little to evaporation through the foliage. Succulents are particularly good to have in areas prone to arid temperatures or where water restrictions are often in place. They can be environmentally friendly because of their ability to conserve water. Succulents treat water as a precious resource, and their entire makeup is designed to minimize consumption of water. Because they thrive in sunlight, succulents can be the ideal plants to put in extremely sunny and hot locations. They will not wither and dry out due to extreme heat. For par tic ular l y dry areas of landscape or where soil is subpar, consider the placement of different varieties of succulents to create a varied and eye-catching display. There are many other advantages to planting succulents, some of which include:

a Indoor greenhouses or sunrooms can be another good place

for succulents. They prefer not to get chilled, which makes a controlled environment advantageous. When considering a spot for your succulents, choose areas that get plenty of sun. Think about pruning back or removing trees that would create too much shade on the succulents. Space the succulents widely apart - more so than you would with other plants - to allow them to spread. Pebbles or gravel make good mulching material around succulents so that drainage will be adequate. It will also set the succulents apart from other plants by contextualizing them in your garden. Visit a gardening center or home improvement store to learn more about the myriad types of succulents that can add beauty to most gardens.

a

Succulents offer contrasts in shape, texture and colors. With the many varieties, you are bound to find something interesting and different to add to the landscape.

a Whether you have ample acreage in the yard or simply some containers available for planting, succulents will thrive. They grow just as well in containers as they do in the ground.

a Succulents do not tend to require pruning or cutting back of the plant. With this in mind, you can expect them to grow large. Therefore, space the plants adequately to allow for growth.

a Succulents are perennials. So once you plant them, they should last for years and years without the hassle and expense you can expect from planting annuals every year.

T hings to Consider When

Building an in-law suite

When older individuals prepare to downsize, many enter a retirement community or an assisted living facility. A growing trend, however, are multigenerational households with in-law suites, in which elderly relatives move back in with younger family members. Such arrangements have many benefits, including cutting down on assorted living costs and often, strengthening family ties and relationships. In-law suites are typically created by converting a room in the house, such as the basement or even a garage, into a livable suite. Before building an in-law suite in their home, however, homeowners might want to heed the following tips. v Be certain it is legal. Making changes to your home may require a permit, particularly if your in-law suite will be an entirely new addition to your property and not just a strict room remodel. Contact your local zoning board to ensure the project is within your rights as a homeowner. v Consider the health of your in-laws when making plans. Many in-law suites are occupied by aging relatives who might not be able to get up and down stairs as easily as they used to. That makes accessibility of the suite a top priority. Typically, it is best to locate in-law suites on the first floor, so relatives will not find it difficult to move about easily. v Do not overlook privacy. Just because your parents or in-laws will be moving in does not mean they do not still value their privacy. Chances are your relatives will initially feel as though they are invading your space and your privacy, so be sure the suite affords adequate privacy to all members of the household. It might be best to build the suite so it has its own separate entrance from the rest of the home. The suite should also have its own full bathroom and, if possible, its own kitchen area so your in-laws can cook for themselves and entertain their own guests without feeling like a burden. A second kitchen is also something to discuss with a zoning board, as some locales prohibit having two complete kitchens in a single residence. v Tailor certain amenities to the elderly. If your in-laws are older, install certain amenities, such as grab bars in the shower and bathroom, during the initial construction so you will not have to make changes down the road. Install easy-open drawers and make sure the suite has ample lighting. v Remember to install safety features. Safety features like fire, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are a necessity. Make sure the alarms on each of these detectors are loud enough so elderly men and women who have hearing loss can hear them without issue. Make sure all walkways leading to the inlaw suite have motion detecting lamps at night to reduce risk of falling. Also, if the suite will be a separate building from your house, such as a converted pool house or detached garage, install an intercom system that connects with the main house so your relatives can easily reach you in the case of an emergency. v Reduce Risk of Injury in the Bathroom. Wet tiled floors can greatly increase the risk of falling, so homeowners should make sure to have bathroom rugs that are slip-resistant. Install grab bars on the walls, including in the bathtub and next to the toilet. Also, make sure the towel bars are secure, as seniors might grab onto towel bars if they feel they are about to fall or need to regain their balance. Be sure to place a non-skid mat or strips in the standing area of the bathtub. v Keep the Home Illuminated. Nightlights should be used in hallways and along the staircase as well as in the bathroom and the kitchen. Elderly residents likely won’t be familiar with where the light switches are, at least not immediately. v Clear Out the Clutter. A cluttered home is a fire hazard regardless of who is living inside. However, a cluttered home is also a considerable safety risk for seniors. Be sure the bedroom is not overcrowded and make certain there is a clear path to walk around the bed. In the living room, make sure cords from the entertainment system are bundled and not lying open on the floor. Magazine or newspaper baskets should be moved away from areas where inhabitants will be walking. Explain to any young children in the home that their toys, inside and out, need to be put away and kept off of walkways to help others avoid injury. Adults who work around the house should also clean their work areas thoroughly and put everything away before calling it a day.

A space that serves as an indoor-outdoor transitional area in a home can be a valuable living space. Screened-in porches are often attractive to buyers, but they are typically not as popular as a room that can be used once the warm weather has passed. Certain features of a home can increase a home’s resale value. A bright, well-lit room helps people feel more cheerful and relaxed. To easily achieve more light and space, consider the addition of a three-season-room. When paired with energy-efficient new windows, this space can make a welcome addition to just about any home. A three-season room is often called a sunroom or extended season room. It is not to be mistaken for a fourseason-room, which is fully insulated and generally has heating and air conditioning just like the rest of the house. A three-season room does not have these amenities, but it may be used year-round with the help of a portable heater.

property. Consider your landscape and property lines before doing any building. You may have to reframe certain parts of the room if you are converting a porch to a sunroom. Be sure to use materials that will accommodate the addition of heavier, thicker glass or windows. Many homeowners find that weatherproofing the room is a good idea. Use construction-grade materials you can commonly find at home improvement centers. Wrapping the room in a material that guards against heat, humidity and moisture will ensure a more comfortable environment once construction is complete. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You’ve heard the sayings, and they exist for a reason. They certainly ring true when it comes to decorating style. Whether your taste is classic or colorful, expressing your taste outdoors can draw raised eyebrows and unsolicited comments from neighbors and guests. On the other hand, there is certainly a bit of character that lawn décor can add to your yard. Is a pink flamingo a no-no or a yes-yes? You decide. Go ahead—gnome if you want to. DIY Recipe for

a

Saving

Many homeowners or renters wrestle with the question of whether to tackle a project as a doit-yourself (DIY) venture to save some money, or whether they should simply leave it to a professional. Each situation is unique, but there are certain factors that must be considered regardless of a homeowner’s particular situation. On the surface, a DIY task can seem like a very good way to save some money. After all, a large percentage, sometimes as much as 50 percent, of the cost of hiring a contractor goes toward labor. For a DIY job with no such costs, the final financial tally can be substantially less. Although labor can be expensive, that cost is often justified. People who hire carpenters, electricians, plumbers, and the like are paying for the workers’ experience. They are also paying with the expectation that the job will be done correctly. With jobs that require a building permit or must be done to specific code, the contractor often puts his reputation on the line and will be held accountable if the work does not meet requirements. That is not to say an untrained individual cannot tackle a specific job around the house. There are some guidelines that may make such projects go more smoothly and, as a result,

make them more affordable.

Gardening Naturally: Pennsylvania’s Native Plants

Our state’s name, Pennsylvania, makes it clear that this territory comes with an abundance of vegetation. Combining “Penn,” for William Penn, the original land grant holder, with “sylvania,” meaning forest or woods, about 60 percent of Pennsylvania is currently forested. With lush, green plants and wildflowers blanketing this much of the state, many people may not be aware of the differentiation of native plants versus non-native. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), Pennsylvania has over 2,100 native plant species, including trees, shrubs, grasses and ferns, and flowering annuals, biennials, and perennials. A native plant is one that occurred here before European settlement. A non-native plant is one that has been brought into the state and become established. Invasive plants usually include weeds or plants that “take over,” displacing other plants. There are some native plants that fall into this category as well, but overall most invasive plants come from outside the area. From a landscaping and gardening standpoint, there are many advantages to using native plants. First, natives are plants that are already adapted to the local climate and soil conditions since this is where they naturally occur, so no extra fertilizers, fewer pesticides, and overall less toiling and fretting go along with caring for them. In addition, they are often important in providing habitat for local birds, insects, butterflies, and other animals, as well as nectar, pollen, and seeds that serve as food for these creatures. Native plants

require less water and can help reduce water runoff, erosion, and flooding. They also contribute to reducing air pollution by removing carbon from the air. The DCNR recommends some basic tips for “going native.” R Protect native plant communities and minimize habitat destruction. This can also include removing invasive species. R Landscape with native plants. Parks, campuses, and other public gathering spots, as well as your own backyard, are ideal spots for growing Pennsylvania’s hardy and attractive native plants. R Learn more about native plants. A guide of Pennsylvania’s native plants and growing recommendations can be found at www.dcnr.state.pa.us/forestry/wildplant/native.aspx. R Buy native plants at local nurseries. To avoid depleting native populations, do not remove native plants from the wild. R Practice responsible landscaping techniques by not introducing invasive species that could spread throughout your yard and your neighbors’. Also, note particular plants’ growing conditions (shade, sun, soil type, amount of water, etc.) and plant them accordingly, like you would with any other planned gardening.

Gardening can be a rewarding and relaxing hobby, one that allows gardeners to escape from the daily grind and soak up some sun. As rewarding as gardening can be, it is even more so when gardeners ply their trade in an eco-friendly way. Gardening with the environment in mind is something many gardeners might do already without even knowing it. The following are a few ways to garden in a way that is mutually beneficial to gardeners and the environment. z Use mulch to conserve resources and reduce reliance on fertilizers. Conserving resources is one of the best ways to help the environment, and applying mulch is a great way to conserve water. Mulch helps the soil retain water, keeping the water from evaporating into the air, which means less watering for gardeners who want to keep their gardens looking lush and healthy. In addition to helping to conserve water, mulch can also help reduce reliance on fertilizers. That is because mulch provides nutrients to the soil as it breaks down, providing an eco-friendly alternative for gardeners who

do not want to rely on fertilizers to deliver nutrients to their soil. z Plant more flowers. Planting flowers is another eco-friendly way to garden. Native flowers, in particular, can help maintain an area's natural ecosystem, providing food and shelter for insects and other wildlife. More flowers and plants around the property also means there will be significantly less grass to mow, which reduces the amount of gas necessary to mow that grass in the warmer weather and the amount of greenhouse gases the lawn mower produces. In addition, less grass means less need for fertilizers and pesticides to maintain that grass. z Choose gardening tools and products with the environment in mind. Veteran gardeners have a host of tools that help tackle every problem imaginable. But many older tools or gardening products might not be made of recycled materials. When shopping for gardening tools, whether you are a beginner who needs everything or a veteran gardener whose tools have seen better days, choose products made from recycled materials. For example, many gardeners use mats to help reduce stress on their knees when kneeling down to garden. When buying a new mat, choose one made from recycled tires. But emphasizing recycled products should not stop at the tool shed. Mulch, for instance, can be made from recycled rubber and will not impact the environment in a negative way. Just be sure to purchase recycled mulch that is nontoxic and does not consume natural resources. z Live and let live. Insects might be a nuisance, but they can also be a gardener's best friend. Spraying insecticide simply because insects can be pesky is shortsighted and impractical. Certain spiders prey on other insects that can be harmful to a garden, while butterflies and bees help pollenate flowers. Earthworms are also very beneficial to a garden, helping to aerate and fertilize the soil and enabling plants to grow by removing harmful matter from the soil.

Planting more plants and flowers around the property is one way gardeners can garden in a more eco-friendly way. [24] home appeal Spring 2013

All-Natural Fertilizer Options v Compost. Compost is often called “black gold” because of its rich nutritional content and how it can quickly amend the quality of the soil. Compost heaps or bins can be set up in the yard so that individuals can manufacture their own compost from scraps of material used around the house. Discarded fruit peels, eggshells, leaves, and paper can be added to the compost pile. Over time, natural bacteria will break down the materials until they form an effective fertilizer. v Manure. Manure remains one of the best and most practical fertilizers available. It is easy to find, and any animal that eats a plant-based diet will produce manure that will be acceptable for the garden or lawn. Avoid manure from animals that eat meat, as the feces may contain harmful bacteria or parasites. Not only will manure add nutrients to the soil, it will also help with moisture retention.

v Elemental sulfur. A lawn that has turned yellow may be lacking in the right levels of sulfur. Elemental sulfur, when used sparingly, can help boost levels and return the lawn to normal. v Blood meal. This dried blood product is collected from slaughtered animals and can be another nitrogen booster for the soil. Vegetarian gardeners may want to avoid its use for this reason, however. Some gardening enthusiasts say that blood meal may also be a deterrent for deer and other animals who like to nibble on garden plants. v Peat moss. Peat moss is a type of moss that grows on the top of peat bogs. Peat moss is able to hold large quantities of water in its cells, which makes it a good soil additive to help retain moisture at the roots of plants. This is handy when dealing with very sandy soil or plants that need an increased moisture content to grow well.

v Fish meal. Made from ground and dried fish scraps, this fertilizer is a good source of nitrogen. It can provide a boost to soil in the early spring that will last well into the growing season.

Liven Up

Your Outdoor

Outdoor living spaces have become increasingly popular over the last several years, as residents seek to transform their home into a private sanctuary. Outdoor living areas have become an extension of the home’s interior, with many homeowners creating outdoor living rooms and dining areas so they can relax and eat meals outside just as they do indoors. But homeowners thinking of creating outdoor living spaces should consider a few tricks of the trade before beginning their projects. o Strategically place the space. Property often dictates where the outdoor living space will go, but it helps to keep in mind that the outdoor space is more likely to be used if it is easily accessible from the inside of the home. For instance, if residents need to walk out the front door to access a space in the backyard, then residents might find the area is too inconveniently located and they will not make the most of the space. Whenever possible, plan the outdoor living space so it is easily accessible from the home’s interior, preferably from the kitchen so it will be easier to carry meals outdoors when dining outside. o Emphasize comfort. Many homeowners look at their outdoor living areas as places to kick their feet up and relax, so comfort should take precedence. Forgo the plastic patio chairs of yesteryear for furniture that is more sturdy and roomy so you will not feel cramped or sweaty on warm summer evenings and afternoons. In addition, do not forget to shade the area. Some homeowners choose to build pergolas, but oftentimes an umbrella or two can do the trick at a fraction of the cost. If the

Living Space outdoor living area is near trees, leaves might provide sufficient shade from the summer sun. But keep a few umbrellas in the garage just in case. o Illuminate the area. Summer nights spent relaxing in the outdoor living area make for great memories. But such nights are nearly impossible if the area does not have some lighting. Tiki torches might do the trick for some, while others might prefer solarpowered accent lights. If your backyard attracts its fair share of insects, look for insect-repelling lights or lamps. Whatever your preference, do not forget to have some lighting options in place so that those summer evenings spent under the sky do not have to end when the sun goes down. o Keep the design consistent with your home. In addition to providing an outdoor respite from the daily grind, an outdoor living space can also increase a home’s resale value. However, homeowners who have one eye on R&R and the other on resale value should keep the design of their outdoor living space consistent with their home. One of the goals when designing an outdoor living space should be to create a seamless transition from the home’s interior to its exterior. The best way to do that is to keep the designs of both living spaces consistent. o Don’t forget the fire pit. A fire pit provides a great focal point for an outdoor living area. Instead of sitting at the dinner table, families and friends can gather around the fire pit and relax with some s’mores and share stories. But even when guests are not expected, a fire pit makes for a great place to relax. By employing a few simple tricks of the trade, homeowners can create the outdoor areas of their dreams.

o Weight: Unlike furniture inside the home, outdoor furniture will be moved around quite frequently to protect it from inclement weather or changing seasons. As a result, the weight of the furniture bears importance. While you do not want furniture that is too lightweight, which may blow away any time a strong gust of wind comes along, it is a good idea to choose furniture that is not too heavy. This makes it easier to move should a storm suddenly appear, and it will not require the entire household to help move the furniture into and out of the garage when inclement weather arrives. o Comfort: The whole idea behind an outdoor entertaining area is to have a relaxing place to spend time outside. So be sure to choose furniture that is comfortable and can handle the elements. Metal furniture, for example, might be durable, but such furniture can also get very hot if it is out in the sun. o

Versatility: Many homeowners enjoy changing

their home’s interior decor from time to time, and it can be just as enjoyable to do the same to a home’s exterior decor. That said, look for furniture that can be accented with a variety of accessories, so you can change the look of your outdoor entertaining area easily.

o Protection: Protecting exterior furniture from the elements should be a priority. When shopping for outdoor furniture, figure out if a protective covering is available or if it will need to be custom made. The latter alternative can be quite expensive, so you might want to consider more generic furniture that comes with standard protective coverings to make it more affordable.

Outdoor entertaining areas have always been popular among homeowners. The ability to entertain friends and family or simply relax by yourself is something homeowners cherish, particularly during the warm weather seasons. Finding the right furniture to match your outdoor area, be it a deck, patio or poolside lounging area, is essential to making the most of this special area of the home. When shopping for outdoor furniture, consider the following.
