Women’s Bible Study Announces New Series Change of Pace South (COPS), a community women’s Bible study supported by the Friendship Foundation, will begin its winter session on Wednesday, Jan. 16, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Providence Church, 269 Cinder Road, New Providence. Breakfast refreshments will be served in the fellowship hall prior to a time of worship and music in the church sanctuary. Four courses of study will be offered this session, including “God of Creation,” “Hoping for Something Better,” “Psalm 23: The Shepherd With Me,” and “Jesus Among Secular Gods.” “God of Creation: A Study of Genesis” by Jen Wilkin is a DVD-based study with a workbook that addresses deep questions: Where did everything come from? Why is the world so broken, and how can that brokenness be made right? The in-depth study of the first 11 chapters in Genesis will reveal a transcendent God and will aim to shape participants’ understanding

of the Bible as a whole. The course will meet for a total of 13 weeks. The study of “Hoping for Something Better” by Nancy Guthrie will also meet for 13 weeks. According to Hebrews 11:40, God has something better planned for His children. The book of Hebrews was written to people who lived with disappointments and doubts and needed to see clearly what makes Jesus worthy of worship and pursuit. The thorough and practical book study of Hebrews aims to direct hope to Jesus. “Psalm 23: The Shepherd With Me” is a seven-week DVD-based study by Jennifer Rothschild that points women to the powerful tenets contained in the familiar Psalm, including that God is the Good Shepherd who provides the protection, comfort, guidance, rest, and companionship many women long to have. The study includes a workbook with daily personal assignments. See Women’s Bible Study pg 3

Local women are invited to register now for the new series of Bible studies that will be offered by Change of Pace South at Providence Church beginning on Jan. 16.

Livestock Judging Team Places Ninth In Nation By Chelsea Peifer

Four students from Lancaster County achieved ninth place as a team in the 95th National 4-H Livestock Judging contest held from Nov. 8 to 14 in Louisville, Ky. The team placed ninth overall out of 33 teams with students ages 15 to 19 from across the country, as well as 10th in beef cattle and 11th in reasons. Members of the award-winning 2018 4-H Senior Livestock Judging Team included Emma Musser, Maddie Musser, Jacob Snavely, and Leah Welk. Individually, Leah earned 15th overall for her scores at the national competition. Leah, the daughter of Don and Emily Welk of Strasburg, is a senior at Lampeter-Strasburg High School. She has been involved in 4-H for eight years and is also a member of FFA. After graduation, Leah plans to attend Penn State University to major in agricultural science and minor in animal science or

agricultural communications. Plus, she plans to get involved in livestock judging at the collegiate level. “I learned I can compete at a higher level just like anyone else can,” said Leah. “It was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.” Earlier in the year, Leah set the goal of becoming an All-American, and achieving that was the highlight of her year. Prior to the national competition, the team won the state championship at the Penn State 4-H Achievement Days held at University Park from July 23 to 25. The team placed second at the Keystone International Livestock Exposition on Oct. 5. Individually, Maddie earned fourth, Emma took eighth, and Leah came in 13th. At the Southeast Regional Contest in Raleigh, N.C., on Oct. 27, the team came in fourth place, with Maddie taking sixth and Leah placing ninth. See 4-H Livestock Team pg 4

A clear understanding of personal expenditures and savings rates is essential for securing a strong financial future. People may establish this understanding through the creation of a financial plan, which, according to the Financial Planning Association, identifies goals and objectives that take finances to achieve and creates a plan for making those things happen. Financial advisers may assist in the creation of these plans. When creating financial plans, people should use the following steps. 1. Identify goals. People should consider what they want to achieve, such as buying a home, retiring early, providing for a child’s education, or having more time and money for travel. Putting goals on paper may inspire people to pursue them more vigorously. 2. Conduct a financial audit. People should make a list of all their assets and then subtract existing debts to figure out their net worth. While tabulating, they should find out how much

money they bring in and spend each month so they can get a clear picture of their spending habits. The audit may help people make smart choices in regard to spending and saving. 3. Eradicate existing debt. One of the key parts of a financial plan is to pay down highinterest debt to free up money for the future. Focus on paying off credit card balances, highinterest loans, or balances for other accounts where interest is high. People who are having trouble paying down high-interest debt may consider a debt consolidation loan. 4. Start saving. Building savings is essential to reaching many goals. It also is key to avoiding financial ruin during emergency situations, such as home or car repairs or a disability that causes time off work. People should start small by having a certain percentage of money deposited into a separate account automatically. Investing in the right products also can help people grow their savings.

Show To Feature “Book Of Matthew Project” The Community Room on King, 106 W. King St., Lancaster, will host a show titled “The Book of Matthew Project” by artist Daehong Kim for First Friday, Jan. 4, from 6 to 9 p.m. “The Book of Matthew Project” was conceived in June 2010 as a personal pledge to support a church ministry that was sending a group of young adults on a short-term service mission to South Korea. Kim committed to handwriting each verse from the Gospel of Matthew on individual cards, accounting for 1,071 verses. Kim also invited people to participate by contributing verses, and these verses and others were collected and applied on five canvases. The purpose of writing each verse was to facilitate

a contemplative mode of worship and to help Kim choose wonder, praise, and gratitude in response to a challenging time in his life. Kim is an American artist who was born in South Korea in the late 1970s. He took up studio art and music performance as a child. At age 7, he became fascinated with basic generative design in a computer programming class. He is an advocate of art as an agent for telling stories and as a medium of renewal. He considers art integral to the narrative of his personal pilgrimage in human portrait and faith. Attendees of the First Friday event will be able to meet the artist, read some of the handwritten verses, and enjoy snacks.

Women’s Bible Study from pg 1 The second seven-week study option will be “Jesus Among Secular Gods” by Ravi Zacharias and Vince Vitale. Through DVD and workbook lessons, the study aims to prepare participants to defend the hope of Christ against the cultural philosophies that are prevalent today, such as atheism, scientism, hedonism, relativism, pluralism, and humanism. A conversational approach will be encouraged in learning about these views and sharing the claims of Christ with others. The two seven-week studies will be followed by a six-week study of “Finding I AM: How Jesus Fully Satisfies the Cry of Your Heart” by Lysa TerKeurst. In addition to the Bible studies, a prayer group will be available for women to attend at any time. COPS is interdenominational and welcomes women from all generations, churches, backgrounds, and experiences. The group will meet regularly on Wednesday mornings for a total of 13 weeks throughout the winter and spring unless inclement weather would prompt a cancellation. Weather closings will be posted at www.changeofpacesouthpa.org. Women are encouraged to preregister at the group’s website. Registration may also be done in person on Jan. 16. During each meeting, children will be supervised by dedicated child care workers who strive to provide a loving nursery for infants and toddlers as well as a program for 2- to 6-year-olds to learn Bible lessons enriched

with related crafts, songs, games, and activities. Supervision is also provided for homeschooled children. There is no fee to attend COPS, but there is a cost for study materials. A freewill offering will be accepted each week to cover child care expenses. For more information, women may view the website or call Jennifer Hatch at 717-548-2962. Shredded Nice, Boneless

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is the largest nonprofit food distribution organization in central Pennsylvania and serves as the ongoing host of HSH’s annual kickoff event. The food bank counts on HSH each year to provide thousands of pounds of lean venison from deer harvested by central Pennsylvania hunters. HSH also works in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Deer Management Assistance Program to receive donations to help conserve a healthy, natural habitat that supports wildlife diversity and healthy deer populations throughout the state. HSH also partners with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, which donates $20,000 annually and uses deer management practices that directly provide venison to the program. Hunters interested in participating can take their deer to one of the participating meat processors throughout the state and donate any amount of their venison to the program. Pennsylvanians can also donate money to the Buck for the Pot campaign, which supports HSH. For more information on Hunters Sharing the Harvest, readers may visit www.sharedeer.org. Thanks to record-breaking donations of deer meat from Pennsylvania hunters, generous donors, and more, the state’s charitable food system will provide more than half a million servings of ground venison through food banks, soup kitchens, and pantries throughout the commonwealth. Now in its 27th season, the nonprofit charity Hunters Sharing the Harvest (HSH) helps to coordinate the donation, processing, and distribution of venison to Pennsylvanians facing food insecurity. HSH has donated 1,356,281 pounds of venison to the hungry since 1991. The Department of Agriculture partners with HSH to cover some of the costs of processing the meat, with the department increasing its share of financial support over the last two years due to increased deer donations. With continued support, Pennsylvania hunters can donate their deer cost-free. During the 2017-18 season, a total donation was made of 3,337 deer, yielding 130,930 pounds of deer meat and providing 667,400 meals for individuals and families in need. Due to this increase in donations, additional meat processors are being recruited throughout the year to better help turn hunters’ donations into high-value protein for hungry families. This year, the department will help to cover the service cost of more than 110 processors throughout the commonwealth.

Coached by Adam and Dani Zurin of Mount Joy and Johanna Rohrer of Manheim, the team began holding practices in January 2018 at the Farm and Home Center. Beginning in March, practices went from going over basic information in a classroom setting to visiting local farms for hands-on experience judging real animals. Each student was required to raise funds for the costs involved with traveling to and from competitions and did so by sending letters to family and friends as well as selling baskets at the Elizabethtown Fair and Manheim Farm Show. “We bonded really well as a team, and it was a lot of fun being together,” remarked Emma when reflecting on the group’s success. Emma, the daughter of Greg and Jodi Musser of Elizabethtown, has been a 4-H member for eight years. She is a junior at Elizabethtown Area High School, where she is president of FFA and plays tennis. “It was cool getting to see livestock from different states and getting to meet people from different states,” said Emma, “and representing Lancaster County and getting to do it all with my sister.” Emma’s sister Maddie has been a 4-H member for nine years and is currently a freshman at Penn

State University, where she is studying agricultural business management. Maddie attributed the team’s outstanding year to the coaches, who volunteered countless hours instructing and practicing with the students. They also planned stops at nine farms along the way to the national competition in Louisville for the team to practice judging animals. Jacob Snavely, the son of Jason and Erica Snavely of Manheim, has been a 4-H member for six years. He is a sophomore at Manheim Central High School, where he is actively involved in FFA and started a student livestock judging club. Jacob decided to try out for the Senior Livestock Judging Team after hearing about it at the annual Lancaster County 4-H reorganizational meeting, where volunteers share about the various opportunities for the coming year. The 2019 4-H Livestock Clubs reorganizational meeting is set to take place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Budgeting Tips Posted Successful financial plans often begin with the creation of a budget. A budget is an estimate of income and expenses in a given period of time. Budgets help with longterm goals like paying off a mortgage or sending a child to college as well as short-term goals like financing a dream vacation. Not all budgets are alike, and when people hear the word budget, they may get apprehensive. Budgeting may require making some concessions in regard to spending habits, but it does not have to put a complete damper on plans. In fact, with a budget in hand, people may be more free to spend, because they will have a stronger grasp of their financial situation. To make a budget, people should start by listing their necessities. They should calculate the costs associated with fixed needs, including rent/mortgage, utilities, food, and any other bills that have to be paid each month. Existing debt should then be added. Debt includes any routine payments being made in connection with credit cards, student loans, car payments, or unpaid medical bills. A spending analysis should

be conducted over several months. Budgets are easier with fixed numbers, but unforeseen variables can affect spending every month. These can include clothing, entertainment, and more. The cost of these expenses should be averaged throughout the analysis period so one can get some idea of how much to allocate for them. Software or apps can be used to help. There are plenty of resources available to help people calculate their budgets and get a picture of their financial habits. Resources such as Mint, You Need a Budget (YNAB), and various accounting programs can produce spreadsheets, pie charts, and bar graphs as a budget is created. People are encouraged to start trimming gradually. Quitting a certain lifestyle cold turkey can be jarring. People should gradually cut back on spending if the analysis suggests that is the way to go. Saving should be automated. Immediately removing a set amount from paychecks by having it directly deposited into a separate account can remove the temptation of spending too much. Budgets are a key part of a financial plan and can help people reach their goals.

Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church has slated the fourth annual Nuts ’n’ Bolts Of Consignment. This fundraising consignment sale, set for Saturday, Jan. 12, was originally targeted at male sellers and shoppers. “I thought, ‘We have all these yard sales and stuff women come to, wouldn’t it be interesting to have a sale that would attract men?’” event organizer Boni Henry recalled. “People look for it now and are hoping to come back.” Tools, sporting goods, gardening items, construction materials, fishing and hunting gear, and crafts will be of interest to all shoppers. Those items and much more will be available at the Nuts ’n’ Bolts Of Consignment event. The sale has expanded so that it includes an even wider variety of items such as antiques, furniture, landscaping,

vintage jewelry and more. Some of the items that have appeared at previous sales included cornhole games, fishing rods, duck decoys, and Amish-made items. As with any sale of this type, no one can predict what specific treasures might be found at the upcoming event. “We get a lot of different things,” Henry said. “It seems like it’s kind of morphed where some women come and bring things they want to sell too.” Te event will run from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the church social hall, with free coffee and snacks for shoppers. This year there will be a special “Mystery Tool or Antique.” Those who attend will have the opportunity to guess what it is. Correct entries will be given a prize. Consigners, who will retain 80 percent of the sale price, are still being sought. Anyone with items to sell should contact Henry to ensure a space will be available. She may be

reached at 717-808-4534 or bohphen@outlook.com. Readers may also call the church office at 717-786-3402. Items should be tagged with prices and delivered to the church in the evening on Friday, Jan. 11. Sellers do not have to attend the sale. Unsold items must be picked up in the afternoon following the sale on Jan. 12. Proceeds from this event will go to the church’s mission team, with a goal of $500 in mind for this event. Henry described the church as mission-minded with projects and support assisting areas in this country and around the world. “We’ve been going to Peru every year for a long time. We have other mission projects too,” she said. In Peru, the church efforts have centered on the village of Tamshiyacu. “Our main project for many years was to try to get some clean water going,” Henry

said. “Now we concentrate more on medical issues. They have issues with malaria, parasites and tuberculosis - we take them medical supplies. Every year when we go, we have some sort of project we work on.” Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church is located at 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville. The Nuts ’n’ Bolts Of Consignment event will be held indoors, but in the case of dangerous weather, there is a snow date of Saturday, Jan. 26. Notice of postponement as well as more information on the sale can be found at www.middleoctorara.org. Pictured on front: Hunter

Orchestra Plans Concert The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) will present the third concert of its 72nd season on Saturday, Jan. 12, at 3 and 8 p.m. at the historic Fulton Theatre, 12 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The concert will include Maurice Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro for Harp, Flute, Clarinet and Strings; Serge Koussevitzky’s Double Bass Concerto, featuring the LSO’s principal double bassist, Brent Edmondson; and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony. Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro for Harp, Flute, Clarinet and Strings was a commission from the Érard Company, one of the first harp manufacturers from the 1800s. In 1905, the company asked Ravel to write a piece to display Érard’s pedal harp’s expressive range and to promote sales of the instrument. Ravel quickly composed the work in a matter of days in order to attend an extended sailing vacation with friends to Belgium, Holland and Germany. In the chaos of preparing for

the long voyage, the score became lost. It was recovered when a young musician found it at a local shop where Ravel dropped it while purchasing new shirts for his trip. Ravel dedicated the work to Albert Blondel, the Érard Company director. He later expanded the piece, original a chamber work, for full orchestra. Koussevitzky was a prominent conductor and well known for his 25-year tenure as music director for the Boston Symphony from 1924 to 1949. Before he turned his career toward conducting, Koussevitzky started out as a touring double bass virtuoso. It was during this period that Koussevitzky composed the Concerto for Double Bass. It is one of very few concerti in existence for double bass and is considered a cornerstone in the instrument’s repertoire. It is also a prime example of Russian Romanticism. Koussevitzky dedicated the concerto to his fiancée and gave its premiere in Moscow. Once Koussevitzky

Many people are aware they should be saving for retirement, but it can seem impossible in households where every dollar counts. By following several tips, however, people may be able to save more for retirement without making dramatic lifestyle changes. 1. Turn raises into retirement savings. Each time working professionals receive a raise, they should consider increasing the percentage of their income deposited into their retirement account. 2. Put bonuses to work. Professionals who receive bonuses can speak to their employer and request that their retirement contribution rates

be increased when bonuses are issued. Many 401(k) retirement plans allow workers to contribute as much as 80 percent of their paychecks. While that is not sustainable for most people every pay period, increasing the contribution rate when a bonus is issued is a great way to save more for retirement. Contribution rates can then be returned to normal in the following pay period. 3. Downsize. Empty nesters nearing retirement age may benefit from downsizing their homes. Doing so may reduce utility bills, property taxes, and other expenses, and those savings can then be redirected into retirement accounts.

4. Reinvest tax returns. Working professionals accustomed to receiving tax returns can use that money to catch up on their retirement savings. Rather than spending tax returns or depositing them into traditional savings accounts, people can reinvest them in retirement accounts. People should speak with a financial planner to help figure out how to accomplish this goal. Even if it requires opening a new account, the longterm benefits or reinvesting returns are substantial. Saving for retirement is important, and it is never too late or too early to start setting aside more money for the golden years.
