Whendriving through eastern Lancaster County on Lincoln Highway, you might not notice a small, yellow building between Ronks and Soudersburg. Although the unassuming structure could pass as a quaint residence, within its walls resides a unique collection of history that has been assembled by its curator, Stephen Meyers.
Bible History Exhibits, located at 2827 East Lincoln Highway in Ronks, boasts a display of archaeological replicas and information that is related to the Bible. The exhibit begins with the book of Genesis and follows the Bible’s timeline through the book of Revelation; replicas of tablets, statues, weapons and scrolls that reference the events of the Bible are placed in chronological order in the display. “Most people may be reading the Bible but may not know that there’s a lot of archaeology and discoveries that directly relate to it,” Meyers said.
Each replica refers to civilizations or events that existed at the same
time as biblical characters if it does not refer to these characters directly. The beginning of the exhibit displays replicas of tablets that refer to the epic of Gilgamesh, the Great Flood and the Tower of Babel. Archaeological discoveries made in Egypt populate the section of the exhibit that documents the book of Exodus, followed by replicas of artifacts from Israel, Assyria, Babylon, Persia and Greece in biblical times.
“The real artifacts are in museums around the world,” Meyers said. “I’ve made replicas and brought them together so that you don’t have to travel to the other side of the globe to see everything.” Meyers occasionally acquires replicas from other people, but more often he creates the replicas himself. He stays up to date on the latest news of archeological discoveries so that he can recreate them and add them to the exhibit. Each segment of the exhibit is also accompanied by informational pieces that detail how some of the artifacts were created or used. One such educational display shows how ancient peoples tanned leather and treated papyrus to fashion into scrolls.

The modern world has evolved through the widespread use of new technology in a variety of ways; during the COVID-19 pandemic, schools and businesses heavily relied on technology to safely continue operating. Although the world is no longer in a state of emergency lockdown, organizations such as Junior Achievement of Southcentral Pennsylvania (JASCPA) have found that procedures adopted during the pandemic continue to prove themselves useful. Whether you live in a rural part of the Southern End or on a city block in Lancaster, many of your neighbors consist of local wildlife; if you live on a farm in Holtwood or Ronks, you’re no stranger to the occasional herd of deer wandering through your land, and local foxes are notorious for making themselves at home in garages and sheds in Lancaster city and the surrounding suburbs. While your human neighbors might drop off a plate of cookies or hot chocolate this time of year, your furry friends exhibit much different traditions, and being able to recognize them makes
the winter months safer for both parties.
Every year, Lisa Sanchez, a park naturalist with the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation, visits different parts of the county to help the public understand animals’ behavior during the winter. Sanchez explains what different types of animals are prone to doing in response to the cold weather and clears up misconceptions about behaviors such as hibernation. “If you’re someone who wants to feed the birds, it helps to realize what else might be eating at the feeder,” said Sanchez. “It’s always good to have awareness.”

Winter Animals
frompg 1
Animals in Lancaster County are divided into three categories: those that remain active during the winter, those that migrate to a warmer climate, and those that hibernate. For those that remain active in the winter, such as foxes, raccoons, deer and various birds, Sanchez will explain how they find their food and where they are prone to making shelter. “I’ve had people realize during a program what has been living in their yard,” said Sanchez. “Even if you’re on a hike, it’s good to be able to identify certain signs to know what’s in the vicinity.” Sanchez often brings pelts, furs and animal skulls for people to familiarize themselves with and better identify them in the wild.
Groundhogs, bats, jumping mice, reptiles and amphibians are Lancaster County’s hibernators. Although reptiles and amphibians in other parts of the country don’t hibernate, cold-blooded creatures in Pennsylvania must remain underground for the duration of the cold season to keep from freezing. A common misconception that Sanchez often clears up about hibernation is the patterns of bears; while bears exhibit some of the same behaviors as hibernators, such as fattening up and resting, they are often active on warms days and many female bears are awake to give birth to their young. Sanchez also warns people to stay clear of caves to avoid disturbing bats, which can’t afford to expend any energy until their food sources return in the spring.
For more information about programs offered by park naturalists such as Sanchez, call the environmental education office at 717295-2055.

In 2021, JASCPA implemented JA Inspire, a virtual career fair that schools can utilize for their students. The program simulates a real career fair, replete with business representatives who provide details on what it’s like to work for their companies and respective fields through the virtual platform. Upon signing into the application, students begin at the exterior of the career fair building accompanied by virtual students and school buses. They can navigate the page to visit the interior lobby, where dozens of companies have set up their digital booths. “It looks like a real career fair lobby,” said Allison Kierce, chief operating officer of JASCPA. “Students can visit any of the booths they are interested in to learn more about the companies and fields they may want to study in college.”
Students participating in JA
Inspire are provided with a virtual backpack that allows them to save videos, documents and any information provided by a booth that they want to keep for future reference. Students can log back into the fair at any time to review materials or visit more booths, and they can email specific questions to company representatives.
Prior to 2021, JA Inspire was a conventional career fair that was held in a physical location. Although schools resumed many in-person programs after the pandemic, many have opted to continue using virtual platforms such as the new iteration of JA Inspire. “A lot of people wanted to get back to having in-person career fairs, but there are logistics to that,” said Kierce. “Virtually hosting JA Inspire removes the need for schools to worry about transportation and allows students to see more companies in a shorter amount of time.”
JA Inspire is provided to schools free of charge, and in 2022, JASCPA was given funding to open JA Inspire to adults in addition to schools. Adults interested in the career fair can contact their local PA CareerLink agency for more information.
JA Inspire will return this year and will be open from Wednesday, March 1, to Friday, June 30. For more information, visit https://tinyurl.com/jainspirefair.

In addition to the artifacts and informational displays, Bible History Exhibits is peppered with photographs that Meyers took himself while traveling through the Middle East. When he is not traveling to the ancient world, Meyers resides in Philadelphia, where he moved from Ohio to attend Westminster Theological Seminary. He opened Bible History Exhibits about eight years ago and stays in Lancaster while the museum is open.
Meyers has also written several booklets on various historical topics, which he sells online and at the exhibit. Almost every item in the exhibit is for sale, and the profits from their sales help to keep the exhibit open. Bible History Exhibits operates under The Institute for Biblical and Scientific Studies, a nonprofit organization.
