Love is Kind BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
How to avoid fire hazards in the new year BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
O

The event, titled Love is Kind, will be held from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tickets are available to purchase in advance at a set price per person, and registration is open to women age 17 or older. L ove is K ind w ill have a breakfast bar to offer guests refreshments such as waffles, egg casseroles, bacon, sausage, fresh fruit, yogurt parfaits, and hot chocolate. Coffee will be provided by One Mission Coffee. Love is Kind will also include a time of praise and worship, which will be led by Alyssa Mayersky. Throughout the morning, guest speakers Brittney Holzhauer and Renee Duke will share presentations that will incorporate personal testimonies and discussion on topics such as adoption and choosing love for yourself as an individual. Door prizes will be given out during the event, including a variety of items donated by small businesses and organizations in the Southern End. The prizes will feature items from Cam’s Macarons, Southern End Community Association, Junkin’ Junes Sourdough & Sweets and Rachel Nolt Photography. Forren organized the first event in 2019 with a vision to provide women an environment where they could create lasting friendships and connect with those who share
No matter what season it is, there are many fire hazards that have disastrous potential if they are overlooked. However, the winter months are a busy time of year for many fire departments due to the additional safety concerns that accompany cold weather. From an unmonitored fireplace to poor placement of electrical appliances, being mindful of common fire starters takes a small amount of effort - but it can prevent a big problem. Many homes rely on the Members of the Refton Fire Company use of space heaters to keep complete a training exercise to the cold out , but these prepare for car accident calls, which little devices are one of can occur more often in the winter due the most common causes to icy roads. of house fires. similar values. That event, titled Beloved, had no sponsorships or other involvement from local businesses. Beloved received an over whelmingly positive response from the community, however; more than 100 women attended it. Forren organized Crowned, a follow-up event, in October 2023. Interest in the series continued to grow, and Forren began to receive sponsorships and donated goods to support the events. Forren received several requests for additional events, and many women reached out to offer their assistance with the planning process. At first,

Professional women’s golf returning to Lancaster Country Club BY JEFF FALK
Not only is it one of the top sporting events in the United States and one of the most important golf tournaments in the world, but it’s also going to provide an economic boom for the area. The 2024 U.S. Women’s Open will prove to be a winwin for the Lancaster Country Club, Manheim Township and Lancaster County. The U.S. Open is coming to - or,
more accurately, returning to - the Lancaster Country Club (LCC) in five months. Apparently, the United States Golf Association’s (USGA) last trip to Lancaster in 2015 was so successful, everyone involved thought it would be a good idea to do it again. “It’s huge. Huge isn’t the proper adjective,” said Josh Saunders, Lancaster Country Club’s director of grounds. “ You don’t have to be a golf fan to come out and support See Women’s golf pg 8

Gregory A. “Greg” Schneider, 72, formerly of Mount Joy, passed away at his residence at United Zion Retirement Community in Lititz on Dec. 28. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Arthur F. and Mary J. Spangler Schneider. Greg was the husband of Karen Snyder Schneider, with whom he celebrated 38 years of marriage this past Aug. 10. Greg was a graduate of Donegal High School’s Class of 1968. He retired from Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. after 33 years of service, starting as a photographer and writer before becoming the sports editor. Greg was a baseball coach with the Mount Joy Athletic Association for 15 years and served as president for part of that time. He loved coaching Mount Joy Blue Junior Midgets and sharing with his teams his love of the game as well as his beliefs of sportsmanship and honesty. Greg was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed spending time at his cabin in Poe Valley, Centre County. He also had a love of lighthouses, and he and Karen spent many vacations “chasing lighthouses” and taking thousands of photographs. Having had a walking disability for many years, he often joked about publishing a book of his photos titled “Photos Taken From the Cab of a Ford F-150.” Greg attended Pursuit Church in Manheim. His strong faith and his love of God carried him through the later years of his life and sustained him through his short illness. Surviving in addition to his wife, Karen, is a daughter, Laura Lane, wife of Michael of Elizabethtown; two stepsons, Vaughn Brown of

accelerants such as gasoline. Although it might be tempting to get rid of leftover wrapping paper by tossing it into the fireplace, anything other than natural wood should be kept out of the flames. Even when using the proper fuel, a fireplace should never be left unattended while it is in use. Now that the holidays are over, many households have gotten rid of seasonal fire hazards such as stockings above the fireplace and precariously hung Christmas lights. But many families tend to keep their Christmas tree up for a few weeks after the holiday. To prevent Christmas trees from becoming dry and extra flammable, people should water their trees regularly until they are disposed of. Another common mistake made during the wintertime is using a chimney that has not been regularly cleaned and inspected. According to Rob Williams, fire
chief of the Refton Fire Company, chimneys should be cleaned and inspected once a year. If a chimney is not cleaned, residual chrysene builds up from the smoke and increases the likelihood of a chimney fire. Williams warned that older chimneys should especially be inspected often, as many are prone to cracking due to being made from terracotta. In addition to common fire hazards, local fire companies often respond to more accidents in the winter due to icy road conditions. Many back roads throughout the Southern End have sharp turns that can be especially dangerous when combined with even a little bit of freezng rain. “You don’t want to go flying down the road at springtime speeds in the winter,” Williams said. “If we do get snow, take your time driving and keep an eye on the weather conditions.”

Women’s golf from pg 1 your community. People are going to come from all over to witness this event. It’s not a feather in (the LCC’s) cap. It’s a feather in the community’s cap. The community has embraced the event.” During the week of May 27, 2024, many of the finest players in the world will descend upon the LCC, 1466 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, and its par-70, 6,600-yard layout to decide the championship of United States women’s golf. Players will play practice rounds on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of that week. The four-round, 72-hole championship tournament will begin on Thursday, May 30, and conclude on Sunday, June 2. “With 25 years of experience and the help of my staff, we’re going to put on the best show possible,” said Saunders. “It’s been a lot of planning. We’re all excited, and it’s exciting for the community. The Lancaster Country Club is committed to championship golf. I think that’s appealing to the USGA and one of the reasons they’ve come back. We’re going to be able to hold more people, the players are going to have an extremely different experience and it’s going to be a much more exciting venue compared to 2015.” The USGA estimates that the U.S. Women’s Open will inject more than $30 million into the local economy for businesses like restaurants, hotels and shops. In 2015, when the 70th U.S. Women’s Open was contested at the LCC, more than 134,000 spectators attended, a U.S. Women’s Open record total that still stands today. “It will have a huge economic impact,” said Saunders. “Just the number of people coming to town and spending money. It will mean millions and millions of dollars for the local economy. As a club, we really don’t get a lot of it. This is our gift back to the community. We want to get people into the community to see what Lancaster is all about.” “Women’s golf has taken off over the last nine years,” Saunders continued. “Tournament prizes have almost tripled. There are more women playing golf. These players are really good. They hit the ball just as far as the average male, and they’re consistent. They don’t get off line. The players love the golf course. The players love playing in this atmosphere.”
