Nine-year-old Parker Millhouse was born without a leg. Despite missing his right leg, Parker lives each day with a positive spirit and enjoys climbing rock walls as well as playing on the neighbor’s trampoline. He is also the inspiration and driving force behind Iron-Leg Corp, a nonprofit organization that raises funds to help children and youths age 18 and younger obtain advanced prosthetics and receive therapy to learn how to use them. The organization, created by president Matthew Millhouse and vice president Sean Laukhuff, became an official 501(c)(3) in April 2021. The board of Iron-Leg Corp. has grown since then, adding treasurer Mike Canarelli, secretary Darren Hershock and board members Matt York, Bill Coder, Andrea Schopf, and Josh Holland. In September 2021, Iron-Leg Corp. hosted a golf outing as its first fundraiser. The organization raised $38,000 at the event, and from that, the organization was

to raise money for Four Diamonds, which aims to conquer childhood cancer. The motto of Mini-THON is “FTK” because everything the students do during Mini-THON is “For The Kids.” “ We stay up for 12 hours straight, and the whole point of that is to try to give you a little bit of what it feels like for these kids who are having long, hard nights. They’re just going through so much,” explained Swarr. Due to a rise in COVID-19 cases locally, this year’s Mini-THON has been rescheduled from Friday, Feb. 11, to Friday, March 18. 2020 Mini-THON, and this year’s goal is to raise at least $25,000. “I like seeing everyone come together as a community and just support one cause,” said Titter. “This is a cause that you see teenagers get behind and really go out of their way to raise money for and show up in person. To see that all come together in one event is just a really cool experience.” To watch the video, visit https://bit.ly/LSHSMini-THONVideo. n 2017, the students at LampeterStrasburg High School (LSHS) filmed a lip dub video to the song “Footloose.” The video was intended to serve as an invitation for LSHS students to attend Mini-THON and get excited about what was to come at the event. After coming across this video recently, an executive committee member of the 2022 LSHS Mini-THON decided to resurrect the idea and make something new. Recorded outside, the four-and-ahalf-minute video shows about 1,000 students singing along to “Can’t Hold Us” by Macklemore and

Ryan Lewis. Mini-THON co-adviser Lindsay Shehan filmed while co-adviser Adam Titter held the speaker. A student captured drone footage, and members of the FFA trailered in a few horses. “I think the video was great because I think it had a great symbolic message of how much fun Mini-THON can be and how we can get everyone together to fight cancer, which is the ultimate goal of Mini-THON,” commented junior and Mini-THON chairperson Maggie Swarr. Mini-THON is an annual fundraiser where students must stay awake and stand for 12 hours

L-S Tops Garden Spot, Fink Gets 150th Win intensity, hit 7-of-8 free throws and pulled away. “Their 1-3-1 press bothered us in the first half,” said Fink. “We went to a 1-3-1 extended press and turned them over in the second half. Kiersten Hostetter and Maggie Visniski had big second halves and Daveler’s defense was stellar as usual.” Hostetter finished with a gamehigh 14 points on a pair of 3’s and an 8-for-8 effort from the stripe. Visniski added ten. Katie Ranck and Horst combined for 14. In non-league action last Monday, the Pioneers hosted Gettysburg, currently the top ranked team in 5A, and dropped a heartbreaker, 41-39. Down 17-7 in the first quarter, the Pioneers rallied in the second and cut the lead to two, 26-24. That proved to be the difference as both teams settled for 15 second half points. Hostetter bucketed 9 of her 15 points in the first half and Visniski added eight of her ten. for more photos see www.townlively.com BOWLING The Pioneer bowlers faced Section leader Cocalico Thursday, Jan. 20, but did not back down in a 5-2 loss. “It was nice winning the last game against a good team,” said head coach John Achille. “We were

about even with them after eight frames, and everyone contributed to pull out that last game highlighted by Nick Bukowski striking out in the tenth frame.” Bukowski’s 540 series, including a 187 in the final game, was tops for L-S. Ethan Snyder (502), Katie Pope (473), Gehrig Harsh (447) and Jacob Haas, with a personal best 143 in the third game, (396) provided the scoring. Last Wednesday the Pioneers dropped a thriller, 3-2 to Garden Spot. Snyder’s 595 was the top series of the day. WRESTLING The matmen moved to 2-4 overall with a 49-17 thumping of winless Lebanon last Wednesday at home. L-S won four of the six bouts wrestled and took advantage of five forfeits to pull away. Ian VanDeusen (152) pulled out a 6-4 overtime thriller after Lebanon claimed a fall at 138 to open the action. A tech fall at 160 capped the excitement for the Cedars. L-S answered with Joel Bitner’s major at 172 and falls by Treson Spahr (285) and Riley Bonholtzer (120), who pinned in 14 seconds. BOYS’ BASKETBALL The Pioneers scored over 80 points for the second time this season, hanging an 89-46 loss on visiting Donegal Friday, January 14. That win also included a season-high 17 three-pointers. Ben Wert, with a season high 27 and Ty Burton, who followed with 25 points, drained five treys each to spearhead an offense that scored 23 points or more in three quarters. “We got out to a fast start,” said head coach Ed Berryman of the 23-6 first quarter. “They beat us 16-15 in the second quarter, so we talked about coming out strong in the second half and they responded.” L-S won the second half 51-24. Less than 24 hours later, the Pioneers were in New Holland where they improved their winning streak to 12-0

Tune from pg 2 The SHS singers who performed in the festival were sophomore Sawyer Weyman and seniors Lilia McHugh, Cassandra Wright, and Aden “AJ” Jackson. According to SHS choral director and music teacher Erin Biles, a resident of West Lampeter, the students sang more professional and challenging pieces than what they normally perform in school chorus. “It was really nice to meet people from other schools, sing with their groups, and listen to what their experiences were like,” noted Sawyer. “And to have all that power of your sections behind you … it’s really powerful,” commented AJ. “I’m a really shy person, so I was really anxious about not sitting next to my fellow classmates,” stated Lilia. “I did talk to other people, so I did get out of my comfort zone, and it definitely made it better.” “It was a wonderful experience,” said Cassandra. “It was really cool to have a whole bunch of talented singers come together to create a concert.” Cassandra’s successful audition earned her a spot in the 2022 PMEA District 7 Festival, which will be held at Chambersburg Area High School on Friday, Feb. 11, and Saturday, Feb. 12. At that festival, Cassandra will work with about 150 singers from eight central Pennsylvania counties and guest conductor Brandon Williams from Rutgers University. She will also audition for the PMEA Region 5 Festival. “They’re incredible human beings already, but when they really work hard, they can do really amazing things,” said Biles.
