Strasburg Welcomes New Chief he retirement of Strasburg Borough Police Chief Steven Echternach and the swearingin of his successor, Nick Ferretti, on Jan. 12 was a historic occasion for the obvious reason. The presence of Bob Ham made it doubly so. “Between Bob Ham and I, you had 50 years of (serving as police chief),” Echternach explained, emphasizing the rarity of that longevity of service. Ham led the department from 1970 to 2002, when Echternach replaced him. Echternach, whose family has lived in the Strasburg area for more than two centuries, had worked as a paramedic, was a member of the Strasburg Fire Company, and served in the Army National Guard. When he decided to leave the emergency medical services, he joined the police department and later attended the police academy. Meanwhile, Ferretti’s parents moved to Strasburg in 1955, and he

grew up in the borough. In 1987, he began spending time at the police station with Ham and a young Officer Echternach. Ham offered him a job, and he completed police training in 1988. Over the years, both Echternach and Ferretti developed as officers and community leaders. Echternach graduated from the FBI National Academy, earned professional emergency manager certification from the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, and chaired the Lancaster County Police Chiefs’ Information Technology Committee. He has also served as coordinator of the Strasburg Regional Emergency Management Center, which covers the borough and Strasburg Township, and was a member of the South Central Task Force All-Hazards Incident Management Team and the Radio Advisory Committee to Lancaster County-Wide Communications. “(Community service) has always been something our department has promoted,” Echternach said.

Strasburg-Heisler Library will accept donations of new underwear through the end of February.

The oldest-known version of underwear might be the loincloth, but it is new briefs and boxers that Strasburg-Heisler Library and L-S Together are seeking during the second annual Drop Your Drawers event. Packs of new underwear in children’s and adults’ sizes may be dropped off in the specially marked collection bin on the sidewalk outside the library, 143 Precision Ave., Strasburg, through the end of February. Alternatively, individuals may also visit www.strasburglibrary.org and follow the links to the Amazon Wishlist, where they may purchase items that will be shipped directly to the library. In March, L-S Together will distribute the underwear to Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) School District schools and clothing banks.

Coping Kids & Teens is run by children’s services counselor Diane Kulas. The program has been around for 25 years, so hundreds, if not thousands, of youths have been helped by its individual and group support offerings. “Being in a group and knowing there’s another kid who went through this makes them feel like they’re not alone,” Kulas explained. During the pandemic, Kulas and her staff members have been focusing on offering individual sessions via Zoom and over the phone. They have been meeting with children and teenagers after school and during the evenings. To combat Zoom fatigue, the professionals have dropped off art materials and games for future sessions at clients’ homes. “The best way to get (young people) to talk is to engage them in something they enjoy,” Kulas remarked. The Family Support Series is a six-week program offered in fall, winter, and spring. Due to the pandemic, sessions are being held online. Families gather via Zoom, then break into age-specific groups. Children and teenagers receive peer support and counseling, while their adult caregivers learn how to help youths grieve. Dealing with loss and grief looks different in children and teenagers as compared to adults, Kulas reported. “The best way to support a grieving child is to make sure the adult knows how to support them,” Kulas explained. “We teach them how to talk with kids, the importance of offering security and predictability, and how to establish discipline, structure, and routines.” The Coping Kids & Teens Program also runs Good Grief Clubs and Camp Chimaqua. The clubs are school-based groups run by trained staff members. Camp Chimaqua is a weekend overnight camp for youths ages 6 to 12. Each camper is assigned a trained

Diane Kulas

volunteer who provides support throughout the experience. Camp was canceled in 2020, but Kulas said she hopes that it will be offered as a one-day event this year. “Camp is a lot of fun. We try to make it interactive,” Kulas said. “We help (campers) be kids again.” An intake appointment is required before participating in any of the Coping Kids & Teens Program activities. Parents or guardians may call 717-391-2413 or 800-9247610 to schedule a conversation with Kulas or a staff person, who will do an assessment to ensure the program will meet their family’s needs. Sometimes, young people are referred to therapists. “They can continue their therapeutic support while working on their grief,” Kulas commented. All programs are run in English, but Spanish language translation and materials are available. ASL interpretation has been provided in the past and may be again upon request. And if a teenager or adult has questions, program staff members are happy to help. “We will talk with them over the phone, give them ideas to start off with, and share resources with them,” Kulas said. Last year’s Drop Your Drawers resulted in 1,295 pairs of underwear, nearly three times the goal of 500. L-S Together chair Jenice Weaver shared that undies were distributed through the nurses’ offices in the schools. The nurses met daily needs - such as underwear soiled by accidents or from spilled drinks in the cafeteria - as well as long-term needs. They sent packs of underwear home with students who did not have wellfitting garments at home. “One of the simplest, yet most essential, needs of kids is clean clothing, especially underwear that fits and is comfortable,” Weaver explained. “When children have these essentials, they feel more comfortable and can focus on their schoolwork. We want all children at school to have a sense of dignity throughout the year.” L-S Together is in the process of launching a clothing bank, Weaver noted, adding that she hopes it will be open by late spring. For more information about Drop Your Drawers, readers may visit the library’s website or call 717-687-8969.
