Promoting Good Conduct In Students

In 2018, Martin Meylin Middle School implemented a program to transform teachers’ interactions with students. The Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) program is centered around one core idea: that positive reinforcement works better with kids

1719 Museum Sets

Tour Guide Training

The1719 Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street, is looking for volunteers to serve as tour guides for its historic property. The museum will host training sessions every Saturday beginning on Feb. 11 and concluding on March 18, with the exception of Saturday, March 4. The sessions will be held at 9 a.m. at the 1719 Museum as well as Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster.

“We like to share stories about the area’s history,” said Lois Miklas, administrator of the 1719 Museum. “We want to get people to think about what it must have been like for the people who first settled here and connect it to their own lives.”

There are only a few requirements to attend the classes to become a guide: Tour guides must be at least 18 years old and have the ability to

educate small groups of people as they tour the property. Miklas noted that although the location has certain areas that can be physically challenging to navigate, such as narrow spaces and stairs, the museum will accommodate anyone who wishes to become a guide.

“The museum is great for people who like history; they’ll get a good dose of history from our local community,” said Miklas. The site is open from April until October, and the museum is looking for guides who can commit to providing tours at least one day or one half-day each month.

The 1719 Museum uses trained tour guides to take visitors through its property, which contains the original Hans Herr House, built by Mennonite settlers in 1719. It is the oldest site of Colonial settlement in Lancaster County and was inhabited by Mennonite settlers

who traveled from Europe to Philadelphia before finally landing in Lancaster in 1710.

Visitors touring the property will also have an opportunity to see a replica of an indigenous longhouse that would have existed around the year 1650. The longhouse offers guests a view of how Native Americans lived along the Susquehanna before and during Colonial times.

The 1719 Museum also hosts its Maize and Snitz Festival in October each year. The festival celebrates various traditions and customs exhibited by both early American settlers and local indigenous tribes.

“It’s important for people to have a sense of what their community’s history is, so that they can see how they may be connected to it,” Miklas said.

Acorn Acres announced that it will host a Groundhog Day scavenger hunt from Thursday, Feb. 2, until Sunday, Feb. 5. The wildlife rehabilitation center, which is located in Millersville, collaborated with multiple businesses in downtown Lancaster to coordinate an event that celebrates the holiday tradition and interrupts the infamous lull of the postChristmas winter months.

than negative reinforcement.

“(PBIS) came from the idea that punitive consequences aren’t always successful,” said Alicia Kowitz, school principal. “Instead of detention and suspension, the thought was that we would reinforce positive behaviors and set an example out of students who are doing the right thing.”

Lady Pioneers Earn Fifth Straight Victory

With playoffs just around the corner, the girls’ basketball team took care of business over the last week, grabbing three wins in five days to stay in second place behind undefeated Lancaster Catholic.

After opening the new year with three straight losses, including a 20 pointer against the Crusaders, the Pioneers have righted the ship. Their three wins last week pushed their winning streak to five straight.

L-S opened that three game run with a 49-46 thriller over Elco at home Thursday, Jan. 19. The girls pushed out to a

19-13 lead early in the second quarter before Elco went on an 11-0 tear and took a 26-23 lead at the break.

The visitors scored the first two buckets of the third before L-S poured in 18 points, held Elco to two and grabbed the lead for good.

Back-to-back triples by Anna Horner and Ava Vaughn highlighted the comeback.

Three times Elco cut the lead to two points in the fourth quarter and each time L-S responded. The first time, Horner’s three made it 44-39. The second time, with 3:12 left, Katie Ranck (11 points) scored in the paint to push it to 46-42, and the third time Kelsey McTaggart nailed a

pair of free throws with 45.2 on the clock, again keeping L-S in front, 48-44. Ranck’s final free throw, with 17.7 left, sealed the scoring.

“Anna came up big, scoring a career-high 21 points,” noted head coach Steve Villbrandt. “And Ava hit some big threes as well. Katie played tough in the paint and grabbed 12 rebounds. She never backs down and Kelsey’s free throws were clutch.”

Two days later the Pioneers hosted the last team in Section One, Elizabethtown (3-15 overall) and needed overtime to notch a 36-30 Saturday afternoon win.

“The Elco game was very emotional and physical,” said Villbrandt. “We were banged up and tired from that game and we couldn’t find the basket against E-town. This one was a struggle from start to finish.”

L-S fell behind 9-5 in the first quarter but held a 17-15 lead at the half and looked to take control with an 11-5 third quarter. The Bears, however, fought back and dominated the fourth quarter 10-2 to tie the game.

“Katie’s free throw tied the game,” Villbrandt recalled. “And they had a hail Mary at the buzzer.”

L-S went 6-for-6 at the foul line in overtime. Horner was 4-for-4 and Ranck was 2-for2. The Pioneers were 15-for21 for the game.

Ranck tied E-town’s Taryn Hummer for game-high honors with 17 points. Horner and McTaggart combined for 11.

On the road Monday at Donegal, L-S used a 42-21 run through the second and third quarters to take control. They defeated the Indians 62-36 behind Ranck’s game-high 18 points. Horner and Vaughn combined for 25 points and knocked down seven of the team’s 11 three-pointers. Ava Leonard added two and finished with eight points as L-S poured in a season-high 62 points.

SWIMMING

Despite a handful of top performances, the LampeterStrasburg swim team could not contain the visiting Bears of Elizabethtown last Monday, Jan. 23 and suffered a pair of losses. The girls put up a good fight in a 98-72 result while the boys, lacking E-town’s depth, fell 126-43.

The girls won two of three relays to keep it close. Madelyn Juba, Ashley Prouse, Kylie Gerhardt, and Zara Paisley claimed the 200 free while Prouse, Krista Lambert, Juba and Paisley capped the meet with a 400 free win.

Also rising to the top was Paisley and Juba (3rd in the 200 free), who went 1-2 in the 100 free, and Gerhardt with the top time in the 100 backstroke. Paisley earned a second in the 100 breaststroke while Gerhardt posted a season best in the 200 IM finishing a close second to sophomore Ali Fink. And in the closest race of the day, Prouse fell just .03 seconds shy of Fink in the 100 fly. Prouse was also second in the 50 free and Grace Schonour added a second behind Ger-

hardt in the 100 back.

Highlighting the boys’ action was Kyle Spaulding’s first place effort in the 100 free. Ryan Smecker added seconds in the 100 fly and 200 IM, Matt Rota claimed fourth in the 200 IM and freshman Adam Zook was fourth in the 500 free and fifth in the 100 fly.

BOWLING

With only one match over the last week, the Pioneers bowlers crossed over to Lancaster Catholic in Section Four and earned its seventh shutout of the season.

Ethan Snyder rolled a pair of 200 games and led with a 604 series. Peter Mecouch was close behind at 597. Maddux Harsh opened with a 206 and claimed a 536 series with Katie Pope adding a 503. Jack Ross and Nick Bukowski combined for a 508.

WRESTLING

In one of their closest matches of the season, the Pioneer wrestlers dropped a 35-26 thriller at home Wednesday, Jan. 25. The Spartans held a slim 29-26 lead with one bout left and sealed the deal with a fall.

Elijah Myers, with a 10-7 decision at 114 put LS on the board. A pair of Spot forfeits lifted the score to 15-6. The Spartans won three of the next four, slowed only by Josh Heisey’s 13-0 major at 145, and cut the lead to 19-17.

Justice Lugo (160) pulled out a 5-4 decision and Jaiden Newton added a 14-5 major gave L-S a nine-point lead with three bouts left. The Spartans earned two falls and gained

forfeit points to pull away. BOYS’

BASKETBALL

Playing three games in five days over the last week, the boys’ basketball team went about work as usual and collected three more wins, none bigger than Tuesday’s, Jan. 24, 69-52 win over Donegal.

“They were one game behind us in the standings,” noted head coach Ed Berryman. “The first time we played them we went up by 15 points in the first quarter and won by five. We did the same thing on Tuesday. I reminded the guys at the break. We knew it was far from over.”

That first quarter featured a combined 11 triples. L-S canned eight, five by Dean Herr, and the Indians added three to account for the 24-9 tally. Donegal closed the gap with a 15-12 second quarter but it wasn’t enough to gain momentum. L-S won the second half as well, 33-28.

Winter Games frompg 1

A large part of the program revolves around a ticket system. Every time a teacher notices a student who is exhibiting positive behavior, that student earns a ticket. These tickets can be used in a variety of ways, such as being redeemed at the school’s pride store. Students can purchase items like small trinkets and candy at the store with tickets they’ve earned. In the fall semester, students submitted their tickets in a drawing to determine who would

“We outscored them in every quarter, but the game always felt closer,” Berryman said. “This was a big win for us.”

Herr finished with a game-high 21 points, all on three-pointers. Justin Glick and Chase Smucker added 18 points and combined for 11-of-14 free throws. And

Luke Hines rounded out the double-digit scorers with an even dozen.

“Four in double figures is a season high,” noted Berryman. “We also had a seasonhigh 15 assists.”

The Pioneers were coming off a 55-42 non-league win over Wyomissing on Saturday. L-S survived a tight first half and led 26-24 at intermission. They broke the game open with a 16-5 run through the third quarter and played even with the hosts in the fourth.

pick the song that plays in the hallway between classes - and it’s safe to say that at this point, every student and teacher in the school has memorized every word of “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley.

PBIS has evolved since it was first introduced, but the program is still centered around rewarding students for doing the right thing. Although the COVID-19 pandemic put several limitations on the program such as preventing large

assemblies for some time, PBIS remains a successful initiative at Martin Meylin Middle School and has been adopted in other district schools.

On Tuesday, Jan. 10, the middle school hosted its Winter Games event as a part of the PBIS program. The event consisted of six different events in which teams of students from each grade level and school staff members competed with each other. Students could use a ticket earned from the PBIS pro-

“Justin Glick had a doubledouble, scoring a career-high 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds,” said Berryman.

“And Juda White came off the bench and hit a big three late in the second quarter.”

L-S opened their busy week at Elco on the 19th and swept the Raiders with a 51-36 final.

The Pioneers outscored the hosts in every quarter and connected on 14-of-16 free throws to finish on top.

Smucker was a perfect 6for-6 at the stripe and netted a team-high 15 points. Herr hit a pair of triples and finished with 14 points.

“We’re 5-0 since Ben got hurt,” Berryman noted.

“That was a tough situation for Ben and for us. Everyone has stepped up. The guys are taking advantage of their opportunities and making plays. It has gotten us to where we are.”

gram to participate in the event, and over 30 kids from each grade level joined in the fun. The Winter Games featured sled races, where participants pulled a team member on a blanket to the finish line, and a relay race in which runners wore winter attire. Contestants also played musical chairs, competed in a contest to turn a team member into a snowman using toilet paper and saw which team could unwrap the most Hershey’s Kisses in under two minutes

while wearing oven mitts.

“The program also provides an opportunity for kids who were getting in trouble to showcase who they are and to be recognized,” said Cory Robison, assistant principal. “The success of it and the kids’ excitement is a direct effect of the work that teachers have put into the program.”

At the end of each marking period, the school will hold a recognition assembly to shine a spotlight on kids who have improved in ways such as participating in class for the first time or students who teachers have noticed to be hardworking. “It’s a chance for kids to recognize each other’s accomplishments in a way that isn’t centered solely on academic achievements.”

The event was first held in 2021, following COVID-19 lockdowns that put local businesses in a dire position.

“February is already notoriously bad for downtown businesses because of the cold weather,” said Betsy Shank, founder of Acorn Acres. “I wanted to do something to lighten everyone’s mood and get traffic into struggling businesses.” Shank connected with Heather Kreider, a friend of hers and the owner of Hempfield Apothetique, and the two began to brainstorm ideas for an event.

Shank and Kreider decided on hosting a scavenger hunt that involved several businesses in Lancaster city. For the duration of the four-day

event, participants were tasked with visiting a list of local stores, each offering a unique Groundhog Day item or promotion. Acorn Acres’ mascot, a groundhog named Poppy, also appeared sporadically throughout the event for photo opportunities. “People were smiling again. It was such a fun thing to do,” said Shank.

Now that a sense of normalcy has mostly returned after the COVID-19 pandemic, the scavenger hunt has expanded. Ten businesses will participate this year, and the event’s activities have been modified to include children in addition to adults. The event will kick off with a fourhour event at 10 a.m. on Feb.

2 at Hempfield Apothetique, 100 W. Walnut St., Lancaster. An official prognostication will be held at 11 a.m., and the opening day event will be attended by representatives from Our Town Brewery and Ville & Rue. Our Town Brewery will offer a new IPA brewed in collaboration with Acorn Acres and themed after Groundhog Day.

After Hempfield Apothetique, the event will move to Decades, located at 438 N. Queen St. in Lancaster. The bowling alley and bar hybrid will offer a cocktail named after Poppy, called the Snap Kraken Pop; for each of the special cocktail purchased, Decades will donate $1 to Acorn Acres. The festivities will resume on the following day at Lancaster Recreation Commission, 525 Fairview Ave., from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and pick up again at Ville & Rue, 8 W. King St., from 6 to 8 p.m.

On Saturday, the celebration will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Miesse Candies & Ice Cream, located at 118 N. Water St. in Lancaster. The event will then move to the Barnstormers’ Stadium at 3 p.m. and conclude at 7 p.m., during which activities will be offered for children. The Groundhog Day scavenger hunt will wrap up on Feb. 5 at Zoetropolis Cinema Stillhouse, 112 N. Water St., from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m., Acorn Acres will host a livestream on its Facebook page where staff members will read “The Night Before Groundhog Day,” a book geared toward younger children.

“One thing I wanted to do when I started Acorn Acres was support local businesses,” said Shank. “This event is our way of giving back to the community during the normally dreary months.”
