Strasburg Welcomes New Chief BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

he retirement of Strasburg Borough Police Chief Steven Echternach and the swearing-in of his successor, Nick Ferretti, on Jan. 12 was a historic occasion for the obvious reason. The presence of Bob Ham made it doubly so. “Between Bob Ham and I, you had 50 years of (serving as police chief),” Echternach explained, emphasizing the rarity of that longevity of service. Ham led the department from 1970 to 2002, when Echternach replaced him. Echternach, whose family has lived in the Strasburg area for more than two centuries, had worked as a paramedic, was a member of the Strasburg Fire Company, and served in the Army National Guard. When he decided to leave the emergency medical services, he joined the police department and later attended the police academy. Meanwhile, Ferretti’s parents moved to Strasburg in 1955, and he

T

grew up in the borough. In 1987, he began spending time at the police station with Ham and a young Officer Echternach. Ham offered him a job, and he completed police training in 1988. Over the years, both Echternach and Ferretti developed as officers and community leaders. Echternach graduated from the FBI National Academy, earned professional emergency manager certification from the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, and chaired the Lancaster County Police Chiefs’ Information Technology Committee. He has also served as coordinator of the Strasburg Regional Emergency Management Center, which covers the borough and Strasburg Township, and was a member of the South Central Task Force All-Hazards Incident Management Team and the Radio Advisory Committee to Lancaster County-Wide Communications. “(Community service) has always been something our department has promoted,” Echternach said. other conservation methods can help reduce the amount of pollution entering freshwater. In Balak’s class, students have been learning about water distribution on Earth, the hydrologic system, watersheds, and water pollution. They have also explored water usage in the community, the U.S., and globally while also researching actions they can take to conserve water in their own environments. All of these topics tie in with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals of clean water and sanitation for all humans worldwide.

The American Heart Association, a nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, together with its signature movement, Go Red for Women, encourages community members to wear red and donate on National Wear Red Day, Friday, Feb. 5, and throughout February. National Wear Red Day seeks to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in women. The American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement is nationally sponsored by CVS Health and is supported locally by companies throughout central Pennsylvania. These numbers are total cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index. Additionally, women should make healthy behavior changes like moving more, eating smart and managing their blood pressure. Women should know the warning signs of heart attacks and strokes. Don’t Forget Valentine’s Day SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 14TH

Bling! from pg 1

Library from pg 1 may purchase items that will be shipped directly to the library. In March, L-S Together will distribute the underwear to LampeterStrasburg (L-S) School District schools and clothing banks. Last year’s Drop Your Drawers resulted in 1,295 pairs of underwear, nearly three times the goal of 500. L-S Together chair Jenice Weaver shared that undies were distributed through the nurses’ offices in the schools. The nurses met daily needs - such as underwear soiled by accidents or from spilled drinks in the cafeteria - as well as longterm needs. They sent packs of underwear home with students who did not

have well-fitting garments at home. “One of the simplest, yet most essential, needs of kids is clean clothing, especially underwear that fits and is comfortable,” Weaver explained. “When children have these essentials, they feel more comfortable and can focus on their schoolwork. We want all children at school to have a sense of dignity throughout the year.” L-S Together is in the process of launching a clothing bank, Weaver noted, adding that she hopes it will be open by late spring. For more information about Drop Your Drawers, readers may visit the library’s website or call 717687-8969.

Celli started out in children’s wear after graduating from New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology and working in fashion houses around the globe. The clothing was heavily embellished with ribbons, beads, and miniature toys such as racecars, checkers, and tiny dolls and was sold at Saks, Neiman Marcus, and other department stores across the country. “It was a colorful, textural, whimsical, and three-dimensional line,” Celli said. “My collection stood out, and that’s how the Gypsies found me. They tracked me down, and I’ve been designing for them ever since, and that was over 40 years ago.” Celli opened the Sondra Celli Company in Waltham, Mass., in 1981 and specialized in what she calls “uncommon crystal couture.” She

does all the patternwork herself and cuts all the pieces for every design. Staff members sew the garments together before other workers, called “blingettes,” add the surface embellishments. “The stones are put on one-by-one by hand,” Celli explained. “It’s a labor-intensive job, but the results are outstanding, eyecatching designs. As I like to say, ‘It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that bling.’” Celli published a book with Atglen-based Schiffer Publishing in 2019. “BLING! The Uncommon Crystal Couture World of Sondra Celli” includes insight into her career as well as directions for several embellishment projects. The common thread running through LASN’s programs this year is that of challenge. The first program, on Jan. 25, featured sewing with velvet, a persnickety fabric that can pose difficulties for

even experienced sewists. Celli has been asked to speak about challenges she encounters in her work, which include managing dozens of yards of fabric in a single gown and creating the attendant accessories, such as custom angel wings and blinged-out shoes. “For (the television show) we need to move equipment and people from the work room into the main show room and spread out on multiple folding tables,” Celli said. “The gypsy gowns usually need two to three large crinoline petticoats and are highly embellished. I have often had to put anywhere from three to six blingettes on one dress in order to get it done.” 2020 was also a challenge for the Sondra Celli Company. Celli noted that her biggest problem was getting supplies from her New York vendors because the state had shut down. She embraced the

opportunity to reorganize and restock. “Business was down but, thank goodness, consistent,” Celli commented. “We spent a lot of time using up inventory to create masks for front line workers, donating hundreds of masks to area hospitals, veterans, and senior citizens.” LASN president Rachel Siegel noted that the silver lining of meeting virtually is that the group can more easily host guest speakers from outside the area. “Even if we don’t expect to ever create or wear something as elaborate as Sondra’s creations, I am sure that we will all learn something that we can put into use in our own sewing, whether it is a handy tool, the name of a supplier, or a technique that cleverly solves an issue,” Siegel said. To learn more about Celli, readers may visit www.sondracelli.com.

Pauline Zimmerman will discuss her experiences of childhood family violence in a virtual Zoom interview on Thursday, Feb. 18, at 6:30 p.m. She will be interviewed by Linda Crockett, director of Safe Communities, an organization based in Lancaster and dedicated to supporting adult survivors of child sexual abuse as well as ending child sexual abuse. The event is a segment of the “Survivor Voices” series launched by Safe Communities as part of its effort to educate the public about how this issue impacts individuals and communities. Zimmerman is the author of the recently released book “I Heard and Saw Before I Knew: A Journey Through Abuse.” She also wrote “If I Cry, Will Someone Understand Me: Violence and the Church’s Response, Finding Hope & Healing.” A retired nurse and counselor, she has served in Somalia, Kenya and Lancaster County. She holds a license in marriage and family therapy. Interested persons may register at www.safecommunities pa.org. They will receive a Zoom link to the event. A recording will be available after the event for a limited time to registrants only. There is no cost to register, but donations to Safe Communities will be accepted.

Strasburg Chief from pg 1 Ferretti concurred, noting that he coached youth baseball teams along with Echternach and another officer a number of years ago. Additionally, Ferretti has served as president, vice president, and board member for the Strasburg Lions Club, and he is the president of the Strasburg Jaycee Park Auxiliary. He attended the FBI’s South Central Investigative School and completed the Pennsylvania

State Police Leadership Development Program. He also founded and administers the Strasburg Police Scholarship Fund. Although Echternach has retired from the police department, he has not left the building. The police station is located at the rear of 145 Precision Ave., Strasburg, and the borough office is at the front. Echternach had been simultaneously serving as chief and

borough manager since July, when previous manager Lisa Boyd retired. He will now focus solely on managing the day-to-day operations of the borough. As the new chief, Ferretti plans to continue running the department in the direction Echternach established. His major task will be to complete the requirements for the state accreditation process, which the department began at the end of 2018. .

The Strasburg Borough Police Department office number is 717-687-7128, but as it is not staffed full-time, Ferretti recommended calling the dispatch number, 717664-1180, for non-emergency inquiries. For more information, readers may also visit https://strasburgpd.org. “Less Snore, More Cuddle” Are you having trouble sleeping in 2021? If so, please... Take This Reader’s Quiz: 1. Do you snore at night, or sleep with someone who does? 2. Do you wake up with pain in your back or neck? 3. Do you share a bed with someone who wants a firmer or softer mattress than you? 4. Do you wish you could wake up more refreshed and full of energy? If you answered “Yes” twice or more, this story is for you.

Introducing “Less Snore, More Cuddle™” Sleep Systems The only sleep systems that provide a Cuddle Zone in the middle, while raising or lowering head or feet sections. This solves common health problems for couples who sleep together. Here are some of the healthy benefits:

The Snoring Solution Did you know that astronauts don’t snore in space? Snoring is made worse by gravity’s effect on the throat, which narrows the airway. For this reason, snoring can be cured by sleeping in zero gravity -- or on an adjustable Cuddle Zone sleep system to elevate you head.

Stop Compromising Your Sleep If you wish you half of the bed was firmer or softer, a Cuddle Zone system can help. With “His & Her” custom-fit technology, you get a firmness that’s just right for each of you, you keep the Cuddle Zone.

Back and Neck Pain, Gone Sleeping without pain requires body support and spinal alignment. Unlike “firm or soft” mattresses, Cuddle Zone systems support the spine and neck with 2 to 4 comfort layers.

More Energy, More Life Pauline Zimmerman

Cuddle Zone systems help give you deep, restorative sleep. Your muscles repair and grow, and your brain flushes out toxins. You wake up refreshed and energized.

Budget Bed or Sleep System? Why visit a local store when you can shop online? Because we don’t sell budget beds. We offer sleep systems, combining mattress, adjustable base and pillow. Each fitted to your needs. You can even experience any sleep system in our Dream Room. No website does that.

And those “unbiased” mattress review websites? They’re often owned by huge, private equity firms. But we’re not a faceless company. We’re locally owned in Lancaster. When you shop here, you support the community.

Pioneer Swim Teams Upend Cocalico

BY MONA STEINHAUER

Sweeps were the name of the game for the girls who splashed their way past the Eagles, 132-36. The girls won all but one event and went 1-2-3 in the 200-medley relay, and all four freestyle events to pull away. Bre Fluhr, Emma Kury, Ellie Parido and Elizabeth Horner won the 200-medley, Horner claimed the 50 free and 100 breaststroke and Fluhr took the 500. Kara Scranton won the 100 back and 100 fly and anchored the winning 200-free with Zara Paisley, Fluhr and Horner. Paisley also claimed the 200 free. Abby Welchans, a 100 free winner, anchored the 400 free with Ashley Prouse, Tori Smith and Krista Lambert contributing. Tuesday the girls won 2 of 3 relays and pulled out a 97-73 win over Elizabethtown. Horner won the 200 IM and the 500 free, Welchans was tops in the 200 free and Paisley won the 500 free. All three, along with Scranton, took the 200-free relay. Welchans also led the 400-free relay with Kury, Lambert and Prouse. The boys’ team, on the other

hand, fell short 110-60 despite two wins from Spaulding (200 and 500 free), who also swam on the winning 400 free relay. WRESTLING The Pioneers won just six of 13 events, all via the fall, but it was enough to hand Garden Spots its first loss of the season, 36-27 last Wednesday. Alex Cardwell (145), Owen Witmer (152), and Joel Bitler (160) made quick work of their opponents, pinning in a combined 5:24 and vaulting L-S to an 18-0 lead. Jaiden Newton (189) and Parker Owens (215) worked back-to-back falls extending the lead to 30-3 while Austin Reiff’s decking of Matthew Casey at 113 was Lampeter’s last win. The Spartans rand off the final four bouts of the night but only recorded one fall in the run, leaving L-S in front. After cruising to a lopsided 60-17 win over Lebanon on January 20, the Pioneers came back with a solid 42-21 verdict over Elizabethtown two days later, scoring four falls and picking up two forfeits. Treson Spahr earned a third period fall over Ryan Hottenstein to open the action and Zach Shelley

from start to finish. They enjoyed their largest lead at halftime, 22-15 and had an answer every time the visitors challenged. “Rebounding was the key,” said Fink. “We won by 13. Maggie Visniski was dominant. We also took care of the ball and had balance throughout. Again, we closed it out at the foul line.” Kiersten Hostetter’s bucket early in the fourth extended the lead to 34-27, matching their largest lead of the night. Cocalico scored five straight before Katie Ranck and a pair of free throws by Visniski kept the lead at five. The last 13.4 seconds saw Drouillard connect on three-of-four free throws to seal the win. Visniski led the way with 12 points. In non-league play Saturday, the Pioneers were held scoreless in the third quarter, did not hit a single three pointer and dropped a 40-25 result against Twin Valley. Visniski finished with 12 points

and Drouillard and Ranck combined for 13 to account for the scoring. In a battle to stay on top of the Section Three standings, L-S split the series against Central last Monday, Jan. 25. The Barons avenged their 46-29 first half loss with a solid 41-33 result in Manheim. “We had a lot of unforced turnovers and they won the loose ball battle,” stated Fink. “Maggie had another solid game, but we needed more players to step up.” The Barons won each of the first three quarters to hold a 33-21 lead with eight minutes left. L-S pressed for a fourth quarter comeback but fell short. Visniski and Drouillard combined for 15 points. BOWLING After suffering three straight losses, the bowling team grabbed a pair of 5-2 wins, defeating Manheim Central on Jan. 22 and Elco three days later. Nick Burkowski’s 484 series against Elco was tops for the Pioneers.

Blessings of Hope has announced a Church Spirit Contest. The fundraiser will support the organization’s mission of partnering with ministries that provide food outreaches to their local communities in Pennsylvania and beyond. This year, Blessings of Hope has experienced an increased demand for its services of over 500%, thereby requiring it to accelerate its expansion plans. The contest will continue through Wednesday, March 31, and has a goal of raising $500,000. Any church or ministry that signs up to become a fundraiser through the peerto-peer fundraiser campaign and that raises at least $250

will be placed into a drawing. One winner will be randomly selected to have 100 Hands of Hope food boxes delivered anywhere in the 48 contiguous U.S. states. All organizations that participate and raise at least $250 will be invited to tour Blessings of Hope’s facility in a private Church Spirit Contest open house. Grand prizes will go to the two churches with the most donations at the end of the contest. The winner of the first-place Grand Prize will receive 1,000 Hands of Hope boxes of food. Aaron Fisher, founder of Blessings of Hope, will attend and assist with the distribution of the food at the winner’s event.

Up to 20 members of the church leadership team will be invited to be special guests at Blessings of Hope for a thank-you dinner and tour; travel and lodging expenses are not included. The second-place Grand Prize winner will receive 500 Hands of Hope boxes of food for distribution. To register a church for the Church Spirit Contest, readers may visit www.blessings ofhope.com/church-spirit/. Readers may order food for distribution by their church by visiting www.blessingsofhope.com, clicking on “Community Food Boxes” under “Our Programs,” and clicking “Check out our online store.”

Museum Continues STEM Programming Pandemic response programming developed by the North Museum of Nature and Science attained a milestone shortly before Christmas, exceeding a reach of more than one million households. This program is designed to address the emerging educational needs which students, parents, and educators are facing. North Museum @ Home is the e-learning portal and curriculum designed to assist students, parents, and teachers. The program is science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) focused; multifaceted; and mapped to Next Generation Learning Standards. It consists of downloadable STEM Learning Activity Packs which provide hands-on educational experiences for multiple subjects, including oceans, geology, nature, dinosaurs, space, agriculture, and more. Young learners also have access to many in-house education programs, presented virtually, like field trips and live animal room feedings. Another feature is STEM Storytime @ Home, a virtual book experience for children with STEM related themes. Programming also includes access to the museum’s YouTube channel and the North Museum @ Home Facebook group. The North Museum continues to seek funding from community members and local businesses to support its pandemic response programming, as some local school districts have continued to operate with 100% virtual learning models to help combat the spread of COVID-19. “We are workforce specialists, commented Judy Wechter, site administrator for Pennsylvania CareerLink Lancaster County. “We provide job training and supports for individuals who are displaced and currently looking for employment, and we are an outlet for the county for employment and workforce resources. The CareerLink facility is located in the same building as Liberty Place, 1016 N. Charlotte St., Lancaster, but during the pandemic nearly all of its services are offered solely online. “Everything can be done virtually except physically working on a computer. We

hope to, in January, allow people to come in to use a computer, Wechter said. “We are very sensitive to people who don’t have technology or don’t have internet access. We are working on providing WiFi in the parking lot. CareerLink provides three levels of service, and clients may choose which to use. The self-service option features a career resource room where individuals may use computers to conduct job searches, update resumes, file Unemployment Compensation (UC) claims, and print or fax jobrelated documents. The enhanced service includes computer usage as well as attendance at workshops, job fairs, and other activities offered by CareerLink.

Personalized service - the top tier - includes a career navigator who provides personalized assistance as the client explores career options. The navigator can administer assessments of interests and strengths, interpret the results, and help clients determine what they need to access those careers. Wechter noted that $10,000 per person is available for up to two years of training in high occupancy careers. Soft skills training and computer-read resume development are also available. “You need to put as many tools in your toolbox as you can to find a job today, Wechter said, adding that CareerLink can help both laborers and executives find meaningful work. “Nowadays,
