Films released “I Heard the Bells,” a feature-length film that marked the beginning of the company’s foray into the world of movie production. The film, which follows the story of famed poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, was shot almost entirely in Lancaster County and was shown in theaters across the country.
Sight & Sound Theatres, the parent company of Sight & Sound Films, is known in the area for the many stage productions that it offers throughout the year, and it hopes to continue its expedition into film with more movie productions. “We are excited to take our storytelling beyond the stage,” said Katie Miller of Sight & Sound Theatres.
The production team filmed at several locations in Lancaster County
and near Sight & Sound Theatres, including downtown Strasburg, the Strasburg Rail Road, Landis Valley Museum and Hope Episcopal Church in Manheim. “We live in such a rich land, both historically and visually,” said Josh Muffley,

production manager for the film.
“We felt that we had a lot of resources at our disposal right in our backyard, which granted us the ability to accurately re-create things from the time period.”
The film was also shot at a handful of locations outside of the county, the farthest away being the Longfellow Museum in Boston. Many scenes were filmed in Gettysburg at a farmhouse
owned by the Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Association. The film takes place in the mid-19th century and depicts events from the American Civil War. The ability to use existing locations that were historically preserved and accurate for the time period saved Sight & Sound the time and money that would have been used to construct the sets. Although most of the scenes could utilize these locations, the production team built a set for the church that is featured in the beginning and end of the film. “It was such a specific and pivotal part of the film that we knew we wanted to take the time to build it early on,” said Muffley.
The talent for the film consisted primarily of local actors, many of whom are currently performers and employees at Sight & Sound Theatres. Sight & Sound Films also partnered with a few living history groups to find actors, and performers
Most people are familiar with the concept of recycling in the year 2023. If you’re not, you have likely seen the phrase “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” and the many billboards that discourage wastefulness. The majority of municipalities in Lancaster County collect the carefully sorted bottles and boxes that sit on the curb when trash day arrives.
LMS sold its New Danville campus to Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning, and the LMS campus in Locust Grove was purchased by Clark Associates. The main LMS campus on Lincoln Highway welcomed the

The film relays a message of hope in dark times, as it follows

Lampeter-Strasburg’s wrestlers competed in the LancasterLebanon League championships Friday and Saturday, January 2728 at Manheim Township High School. They finished in 16th place out of 23 teams and brought home six medals.
Josh Heisey (145) and Jaiden Newton (172) were Lampeter’s highest medal-winners, placing 5th overall. Heisey went 4-2 over the weekend, posting a pair of
falls, including a 2:18 pin of McCaskey’s Jessiah Jimenez to grab fifth. He also worked a 3:24 fall over Elco’s Sam Bechtel in his opening match.
Newton, who improved to 23-9 overall, also went 4-2. He pinned Township’s Logan Martin in 3:51 before being knocked into the consolations with a quarterfinals loss to Central’s Brodie Daugherty. Newton earned his fifth place medal with a 5-2 decision over Warwick’s Jack Koons. He also posted identical 4-3 decisions over
Elco’s Isaiah Angley and Solanco’s Blaine Plastino to advance.
Settling for sixth place was Tre Spahr (285) and Connor Erb (127). Spahr posted falls over Central’s Tyler Groff, Cocalico’s Josiah Boyer and E-town’s Bradley Candy before forfeiting his last two bouts of the tournament due to injury.
Erb suffered an opening round loss but rebounded with three straight falls, including a quick 36 second decking of Solanco’s Paul Kocher, to advance. He added a 5-2 decision over Cedar Crest’s Jason Brooks to get to the consi semis where he suffered an 11-1 major decision to Central’s Barrett Keiffer. He lost a 9-5 decision to Autin Reitmeyer (E-town) in the battle for fifth.
Also grabbing a medal was Riley Bonholtzer (121) in seventh and Elijah Myers (114) in eighth place. Bonholtzer went 3-2 overall, getting knocked to the consis by eventual second place finisher Travis Clawson (Penn Manor). He came back with a fall over Solanco’s Nathan Smith, lost a 9-2 decision to E-town’s Francis Burke before decking Hempfield’s Suton Schopf in 1:21 for the medal.
Myers also suffered a first round loss and came back with three straight wins, including a tight 8-7 decision over Columbia’s Loudon Rupp in the fourth consolation round. He lost his last two bouts of the tournament.
Also competing for the Pioneers were Charlie Creighton (133), Mitchell Swarr (152), Justice Lugo (160) and Ian VanDeusen (189).
BOWLING
The Pioneer bowlers fought from behind and split the series with Manheim Central, Thursday, January 26, topping the Barons 5-2 at Rocky Springs Lanes.
L-S held a five point lead coming in so a win was crucial to stay on top of the Section Three standings.
The Barons pulled out a 965-956 game one despite Nick Bukowski’s 224. Ethan Snyder led the second game with a 227 as the Pioneers rallied down the stretch for a 922894 win.
“We had an edge going into the 10th frame,” said head coach John Achille. “They had three misses in the ninth and all five of our bowlers marked in the ninth, then we had three misses in the tenth. We couldn’t take advantage of the opportunity.
“In that second game, we got behind early but inched our way back. It was pretty even going into the tenth but Ethan had a solid tenth, getting three strikes for the win.”
L-S maintained that momentum through the final game, opening with 12 straight strikes and rolling to a 1000-918.
“Later in that third game we had eight consecutive strikes, building a big lead and they could not catch us,” Achille stated. “As a team, we averaged 191.9 for the entire match. The kids bowled great.”
The Pioneers racked up another win on Monday, January 30, when they blanked Section Four leader Columbia. Snyder and Bukowski both rolled three 200+ games, including matching match-high 256s to lead the way. Bukowski topped everyone with a 708 series with Snyder two pins back.
“The kids bowled great,” praised Achille. “This was the first time we bowled two games in the same match over 1000 and five different bowlers had a 200 or better game. We’re peaking at the right time.”
The Pioneer swimmers suffered mixed results in their Section Two clash Monday, January 30 with the girls posting a 95-71 home victory over Cocalico and the boys falling short 86-69.
Zara Paisley and Kylie Gerhardt topped the scoring sheet with a pair of individual wins and contributions to two relay victories. Paisley claimed the 50 free and 100 breaststroke while Gerhardt had top times in the 100 free and 100 back. Both swimmers joined Ashley Prouse and Madelyn Juba for wins in the 200 medley and 200 free relays.
Prouse, who was second in the 200 free, led a sweep in the 100 butterfly with sophomores Addie Rodriguez and Liliana Bacon taking second and third.
The boys won six of the 11 events contested but claimed just one relay and managed just two individual second place finishes.
Ryan Smecker, Kyle Spaulding, Matt Rota and Christian Rota, who
was second in the 100 back, opened the meet with a winning 1:53.57 in the 200 medley relay. M. Rota followed up with firsts in the 200 free and 100 butterfly while Smecker was tops in the 200 IM and 100 free. Spaulding added a win in the 100 breaststroke and a second in the 500 free.
The second placed Pioneers did not have an answer for Section Three leader Lancaster Catholic on Friday, January 27. The Crusaders, in front of a packed house, used their full court press to forge a 135 first quarter lead and went on to outscore the hosts in each of the next three en route to a 56-16 win.
“Our lack of experience and ball handlers really showed,” said head coach Steve Villbrandt. “The atmosphere affected us as well. The place was packed and loud and that got us out to a slow start, and we never got it going. This was a rough one.”
Anna Horner topped the scoring sheet for L-S with five points. Katie Ranck and Ava Leonard each added four.
Three days later the Pioneers struggled on their home floor while Spring Grove seemed to knock down everything they put up. The Rockets exploded to an 111 lead early and never looked back. They led 27-10 after eight minutes. L-S regrouped with an 11-0 run to start the second half, cut-
ting the lead to six, but never got closer than four.
The game featured 35 fouls called and a combined 48 free throws taken, 25 in the fourth quarter and 20 by the Rockets. The Pioneers were 7-of-22.
L-S did pour in 22 fourth quarter points with Horner dropping three triples, Vaughn two and Ranck one but that only kept the game close as Spring Grove connected for 32 points and had two players score 20 or more. Ranck settled for 19, Horner added 14 and Saurbaugh finished with a season-high 10.
Lampeter’s six game winning streak came to a halt last Tuesday, January 31 at Cedar Crest. The Section One Falcons, clinging to a 3230 first half advantage, outscored the Pioneers 32-18 in the second half to pull away.
Luke Hines netted a game-high 19 points with Chase Smucker adding 11 to lead the way.
Back in Section Three play Friday, January 27 the Pioneers used a 23-13 run through the first quarter to spark a sweep over Lancaster Catholic, 64-47. They led 44-25 at the break and survived Catholic’s 22-20 second half advantage.
Justin Glick’s 18 points led the way. Smucker netted 15 including three triples and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line while Dean Herr knocked down four treys en route to 14.

The unification of LMS’ campuses has provided the school with an opportunity to update and expand its facilities, many of which were vital to housing the new students. The additional changes to the campus were designed to allow the school’s curricula to focus on areas such as faith formation, the fine arts, science and technology, outdoor learning and world languages.
The building that was previously used as a library for the high school has been converted into science classrooms, furnished with labs, tables and other equipment for biology and chemistry courses. LMS converted an office into what it calls a MakerSpace, which serves as a facility for students to develop their creative skills by making art, building crafts and completing projects. In addition to the academic upgrades, LMS installed a new playground for its younger students.
The transition has yielded many positive outcomes for the school, many of which were pleasant surprises for the administration. Unifying the students under one roof has allowed teachers who were limited
to specific roles at a previous location to embrace other teaching duties. One such teacher is Galen Sauder, who was formerly a middle school teacher at LMS’ Locust Grove location and now serves as LMS’ experiential learning teacher. On one day each week during recess, Sauder takes a group of kids out to explore the 95-acre campus’s outdoor areas. The students are able to learn about nature and insects during the outing, and Sauder often brings animals such as chickens and rabbits to the school for the children to interact with as part of the animal husbandry classes.
“We’ve had some unique opportunities to have outdoor education and hands-on learning experiences,” said Kreider. “People can shift roles because we have the space and location to do that.”
Now that the campus holds children from kindergarten to high school, the transition has created opportunities for peer mentoring among the students. The highschoolers serve as aids in the younger grades’ study halls and often visit the kindergarten classrooms to read for the kids. “The little kids look up to the bigger kids, and the bigger kids love supporting the younger classes,” Kreider said.
The largest changes to the school have been completed, although LMS is still raising funds for several practical and cosmetic renovations, which it expects to be completed after school lets out this year for summer vacation.

But where do these recyclables go once we set them out?
Privately contracted haulers pick up the trash and recyclables from the street. These trucks bring their loads to the local waste management facility, where the waste is combined into larger heaps to make transportation easier and minimize the number of trucks needed. However, not all

drop-off locations, including the one that West drives her recyclables to every week.
Different parts of the county have varying guidelines for how to handle recyclable waste.
Solanco resident Wendy West lives in an area where recycling is not required, and her recyclables do not get picked up every week. Instead, she collects items like boxes and glass jars in her garage, loads them into her car once a week and delivers them to a drop-off location in Oxford. “I’m choosing to do this extra step because I want things that can be recycled to be recycled, but I’m concerned that they’re going in the trash,” said West. Once the collected waste is compiled into larger groups, it is transported by a waste management organization to a processing center. At the processing center, the waste is fed through several machines that
“We all want to do the right thing and recycle,” said Steve Burn of the Southeastern Chester County Refuse Authority (SECCRA). “I can guarantee that all of the recycling that comes through our facility is handled and processed to be recycled.”
SECCRA is a nonprofit organization that operates with the long-term management of waste in mind.
“We’re in it for the long haul,” said Burn. “The less trash that we’re putting in landfills, the better it is for the community.” SECCRA services 10
Burn noted that not all plastic items are recyclable. The machines that process recyclables are designed for simple items such as cans, bottles, cardboard and paper. Items such as plastic toys and containers that are not suitable for the machine cannot be sorted and are thrown in the trash.
Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) limits the recyclables that it accepts to what it calls The Big Four. The Big Four refers to corrugated cardboard, plastic bottles and jugs, metal food and beverage cans and glass jars and bottles.

Making fastnachts at Holy Trinity Catholic Church is an exact science. Sort of. There are specific steps required in making the treats, but because each one is handmade, no two are alike, said Betty Mahan, a member of the fastnacht committee at the church.
“There is a correct way to roll the dough,” Mahan explained. “It’s not like rolling dough at home. You don’t flour the dough. You only flour the board and the pin. You don’t turn the dough over. You relax the dough by lifting if off the board.” The dough rises twice - once overnight before it’s rolled out and once after rolling - before the treats are fried. She noted that the resulting fastnacht is unique, adding, “I’ve never had any that taste like ours.”
Holy Trinity’s annual fastnacht sale will begin on Monday, Feb. 20. Sales will continue Tuesday, Feb. 21, and Wednesday, Feb. 22, followed by Mondays and Wednesdays through March 15.
The fastnacht sale started as a project to raise funds to build a new church. While the current bake will produce more than 5,000 dozen fastnachts, the sale began as a small endeavor, noted volunteer Kathleen Lutz.
“It started out with only one or two days of sales,” said Lutz, who has been volunteering with the bake since the 1970s. While the original recipe is the same, she noted that some things have been tweaked.

“We’ve found easier ways to do things over the years,” she said. “Everybody has good ideas. Some work and some don’t.”
The sale is still a fundraiser for the church, with proceeds used for parish projects and to support Our Lady of the Angels Catholic School. Members of St. Peter Catholic Church in Columbia also assist with the sale, said St. Peter member George Overmeyer. “This is a ‘fun’ raiser more than a fundraiser,” he added. “We all have a lot of fun.”
Volunteers are needed to help with the bakes, with shifts available starting at 4 a.m. for people who want to help roll the dough. Experience is not required, said volunteer Karen Sahd. “There’s always somebody around who knows the correct way to do things,” she commented. Mahan noted that working at 4 a.m. is not required. “People can give an hour of time or help when they can,” she said. “We need second shift people and cleanup people, too.”
Fastnachts are available by the dozen, either glazed or plain. The committee members estimate that 75% of orders are for glazed treats. “You don’t even need to look in the bag to know if they are glazed or not,” volunteer Jim Knapp said. “It’s evident by the weight of the bag because we use so much glaze.”
Orders will be taken for fastnachts online only until sold out. To place an order, visit www.holytrinitycolumbiapa.com. Doors will open at 10 a.m. each day for pickup at the side entrance of the school, 404 Cherry St., Columbia. Orders not picked up by 1 p.m. will be resold on a firstcome, first-served basis. To volunteer with the fastnacht bake, call the parish office at 717-684-2711.
