Strasburg Fire Company Sets 45th Spring Sale By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The Strasburg Fire Company extended its annual spring donation and consignment sale to two days last year, and sale committee members were so pleased with the results that they will keep the two-day format again this year. The 45th annual sale will be held at the fire station, 203 Franklin St., Strasburg, beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22, and continuing on Saturday, Feb. 23, starting at 8 a.m. “Friday evening’s sale was very successful,” reported committee chair Ivan Fisher, referencing the 2018 event. “There were lots of people, and it made Saturday more enjoyable.” The auction on Friday ran until 8 p.m. last year, and Ivan expects it to run later this year. Crafts and small quilt items will comprise many of the auction lots.

This year, the food offerings on Friday evening have been expanded, with grilled sausage sandwiches, fried shrimp, and french fries added to the menu, which also includes chicken corn soup made by fire company members and volunteers. Soup takeouts will be available on Feb. 22 from noon to 5 p.m., as well as all day on Feb. 23. “We’re trying to make (Friday) a family night out. Sit down with your kids and enjoy your evening,” Ivan invited. He noted that tables will be set up in the station’s dining hall, and a few high chairs will be available for little children. The success of Friday’s sale last year enabled more items to be moved on Saturday, Ivan remarked. The weather did not appear to dampen spirits too much. “We had a good day (on Saturday) despite the rain,” said committee member Jonathan Peachey. See Strasburg Fire Company pg 7

During the event, the dry ingredients for 300,000 meals will be portioned and sealed into bags that will be sent to those in need around the world. It will take 1,500 volunteers and $66,000 to complete the project. The value of each meal is 22 cents, and volunteers are asked to contribute toward that cost. Donations from those who cannot help with the packing will be accepted as well. Event chairperson Lora Magnus Wenger shared that according to Feed My Starving Children, approximately 6,200 children around the world die each day from hunger and malnutrition-related causes. “As a community, we have the opportunity to do something to help alleviate this suffering,” Wenger said. “Last year, our community packed its 1 millionth meal. Over the last five years, more than 5,000 volunteers came together to pack meals that went to those most in need in Somalia, Belize, Haiti, Malawi, and the Dominican Republic. Though this is an awesome milestone, hunger and malnutrition continue to exist, so as a community we need to continue to work to combat it.” Food insecurity is not just a problem “over there,” but it is a local one as well, Wenger said. In addition to monetary contributions, volunteers are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items to the packing event. The items will then be delivered to the Lancaster County Council of Churches Food Hub. The food

bank has requested the following items: one-pound containers of peanut butter; canned salmon, chicken, or tuna; one-pound bags of rice; canned potatoes; 12ounce boxes of pasta or macaroni and cheese; and pouch meals, such as “helper” boxes. There will be a variety of tasks at the packing event, and people of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate. Some jobs will require lifting, while others may be done while seated. Training will be provided, and participants will learn about the impact Feed My Starving Children has on those it services. However one serves, it is a valuable event in which to take part, Wenger suggested. “Volunteering at a MobilePack is worthwhile on many levels,” Wenger remarked. “It brings our community together to make a positive difference in the world, it teaches all of us to have more compassion for those in need and to do something about it, and it allows us to use our blessings to bless others, resulting in us being blessed through the process.” To reserve a time slot to serve, beginning on Feb. 15, folks may visit https://give.fmsc.org/ willowstreet. Those who would like to make a financial contribution may visit that page at any time. For more information about the MobilePack event, readers may contact Wenger at lmw4fmsc@gmail.com or call the church at 717-464-2422.

A silent auction of Scouting memorabilia and camping equipment will raise funds for the continued maintenance of the Scout House. Craft activities will be available for youngsters attending the event. The construction of the Scout House was first proposed by a committee from Troop 56 in early 1957. Its purpose was to provide a permanent home for all Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Brownie, and Girl Scout groups in Strasburg. By August 1957, a house-to-house fund drive raised $1,856, which was more than one-third of the estimated cost of the project. The Paul R. Strubel VFW Post 8710 agreed to take out a loan for $2,000 to enable construction to begin immediately. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Sept. 5, 1957, and construction began the next day. Much of the construction labor was donated by

in 2021, so it’s important to have another good sale, Ivan said. Sale committee member Mike Lockard shared that the apparatus scheduled to be retired is a 1982 Seagrave pumper. In hopes of having another profitable sale, the committee has arranged for thousands of items to cross the auction blocks. Hundreds of quilts, crafts, new and used tools, antiques, groceries, new and used furniture, outdoor furniture, sporting goods, collectibles, shrubbery, feed and bedding, farm machinery, sheds, building materials, carriages, gift certificates, and lawn and garden supplies are slated for sale on Feb. 23. The fire company kitchen will sell a variety of food and beverages, and there will be several food vendors as well. A local Amishrun ice cream shop will be among the vendors for the first time this year. “They support the fire company, so it gives us a chance to support them as well, Ivan said. Ivan expressed his gratitude for the generosity of area businesses, many of whom have donated gift certificates or other items for the sale. He added a special thanks for the members of the sale committee, including his co-chairs, Isaac E. Fisher and Amos Fisher. The vast majority of the committee is Amish. “The Amish community feels it’s a good way to give back to the fire company for all the services it provides, Ivan said. “But it’s not just Amish that makes the sale successful; it’s the whole community. Donations for the sale will be received at the fire station from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 20 and 21, and from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 22. L-S Tops Garden Spot, Competes in L-L Playoffs by Mona Steinhauer

The girls’ basketball team wrapped up the regular season with a win over Garden Spot last Monday, opened the Lancaster-Lebanon League playoffs with a win over Pequea Valley on Wednesday and dropped their quarterfinals game against Cedar Crest

Saturday, all without starting point guard Brittney Zameroski, who continues to suffer symptoms from a concussion. The Pioneers, in a game that honored seniors Emma Gochnauer, Hayley Phenegar and Zameroski, broke a 4-4 tie with a 13-2 run through the first quarter and never looked back in a lopsided 39-18 win over Garden Spot, the last place team in Section Two.

Kiersten Hostetter takes a short jumper for the Pioneers during their 39-18 Senior Night victory over Garden Spot last Tuesday at L-S.

L-S held Spot to a single free throw in the second quarter while building a 26-7 halftime lead. With everyone seeing action, the Pioneers outscored the visitors 13-11 in the second half. Gochnauer, Emma Drouillard and Olivia Vranich each netted eight points to lead a balanced attack. Nora Holmes (6), Jackie Martin (3), Jackie Schultz (2), Phenegar (2) and Maggie Visniski (2) also contributed. Two nights later, the Pioneers opened L-L League playoff action with a hard-fought, 50-41 win over Pequea Valley at Garden Spot. Gochnauer fueled a 13-7 first quarter effort with six points. Marlena Ferry netted all seven of the Braves’ points. Martin sparked Lampeter’s 20-point second quarter with a pair of triples and eight points while Vranich put up six points in the paint and Holmes added five as L-S pushed out to a 33-21 lead. The Braves, in the L-L playoffs for the first time in program history, held L-S to four third quarter points. Annabeth Groff netted their only bucket of the frame, a triple that put the Pioneers in front 36-26. PV, however, went on a mini run and cut the lead to 37-31 with eight minutes left. L-S went 11-for-17 at the free throw in the fourth quarter and Gochnauer added a field goal to push the Pioneers into the quarterfinals. Gochnauer and Martin finished with 13 points each, offsetting Ferry’s game-high 19 for PV. Vranich and Holmes combined for 17 and

Drouillard and Groff each added 3. In quarterfinal action Saturday night, the Pioneers traveled to Lebanon to take on Section One champ Cedar Crest and came home with a 43-28 loss. The Falcons (17-5) posted identical 11-4 quarters in the first and third frames and outscored L-S 12-8 down the stretch, offsetting the Pioneers’ 12-9 second quarter advantage. The Pioneers (9-4, 17-7 overall), on a triple by Gochnauer, cut the lead to 26-20 midway through the third quarter but did not score again in that frame. Crest, on the other hand, dropped in a buzzer-beating trey for a 31-20 lead. Gochnauer, who leads the team with just over a 16 ppg average, dropped in a game-high 14 points. Drouillard followed with six with Holmes (3), Martin (2), Phenegar (2) and Vranich (1) rounding out the point-getters. Next up for the Lady Pioneers (17-6), seeded fifth in the District Three Class 5A playoffs, is a first round home game against No. 12 Palmyra (12-10) on Tuesday, February 19. Both Horner’s teamed with Fluhr and Wagner for a fifth place finish in the 200 medley relay, breaking their own school record with a 1:55.08. The Pioneers also picked up a seventh place finish in the 400 free relay with E. Horner, Curran, Fluhr and C. The girls earned seven top eight finishes and five of them were with new school records! C. Horner led the medal-winners with a gold medal school record in the 100 back (57.91).

On Wednesday, the Pioneers went toe-to-toe with Red Land but, despite winning 6 of 14 bouts all with bonus points, fell one point shy. L-S dropped a pair of major decisions to open the match but got on board when Davidson worked a 3:40 fall over Connor Taylor at 182 and Franklin followed with a major decision to go in front 10-8. night, which Red Land won by decision, 8-2. The Red Knights were deducted one team point at 120 for unsportsmanlike conduct. BOYS’ BASKETBALL The streak is over. After racking up 19 straight wins, LampeterStrasburg’s boys’ basketball team suffered a 63-57 double overtime loss to Garden Spot in their last league game of the season in New Holland last Tuesday. “If there is a good time to lose, maybe this was it,” said head coach Ed Berryman. “Now we can get things back into perspective and refocus.” The second place Spartans lost a 19 point outing in Lampeter on January 18 but kept pace with the Pioneers this time around. Both teams were neck-and-neck through the entire game. L-S held a 20-19 lead in the first quarter but the hosts were up 25-24 at the half. “It really was back-and-forth the whole time,” said Berryman. “It kind of felt like no matter what we did, we weren’t going to win. Garden Spot wanted it more. They got the 50/50 balls and the extra rebounds. They had very few turnovers and they made the plays. They also hit 16-of-18 free throws.”

February 13, 2019 - 9

Both teams scored 11 third quarter points and L-S got that one point back with an 11-10 effort in the fourth quarter. Zach Kingsley snagged an offensive rebound in the final seconds but his stick back fell short in ending the game during regulation. Spot’s Andrew Zentner canned a triple to end the first overtime and Matt Sharp canned his first three of the game and brother Joe banked in a jumper and then made two free throws to ice a 10-4 second overtime and the win. “Our first loss of the season was in overtime against Central Dauphin,” recalled Berryman. “That game I felt we lost. This game…Garden Spot beat us. It was their senior night and they came out with energy. It was also the first time in 12 years that they’ve beaten us.” Adam Stoltzfus tied Keontae Nunn for game-high honors with 17 points. Kingsley netted 12 and Patrick Holmes rounded out the double figure scorers with 10. Chase Broderick (7), Seth Beers (5), Nevin Book (4), and Jarred Getchis (2) also contributed.

LMHS To Present “Bye Bye Birdie” Director Dean Sauder considered a number of plays before settling on “Bye Bye Birdie” for the Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) spring musical. Sauder noted that one reason for selecting the show was to contrast 2018’s “Wizard of Oz” production. “We are intentional about choosing Kathleen Calix-Alvarado (left) will play Rosie opposite Javon shows from different eras to help Thomas (right) as Albert Peterson in the upcoming Lancaster give our students a rounded theMennonite High School spring musical, “Bye Bye Birdie,” which ater experience,” said Sauder. LMHS will present “Bye Bye will be presented at the school on Feb. 28 and March 1 and 2.

Birdie” in the LMHS Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28; Friday, March 1; and Saturday, March 2. A matinee performance will be held at 2 p.m. on March 2. “Birdie” is the story of Conrad Birdie, played by Noah Schnabel. When Birdie, a singer and teenage heartthrob, is drafted into the Army, his agent, Albert Peterson, played by Javon Thomas, and Peterson’s secretary and love interest, Rosie Alvarez, played by Kathleen Calix-Alvarado, concoct a scheme to turn the situation into a publicity coup by planning to have Birdie sing one final song to a female member of his fan club, accompanied by a “last kiss.” The song and subsequent pucker are to take place on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Enter teenager Kim MacAfee, played by Willa Beidler, who wins the competition. Kim’s parents, Harry MacAfee, portrayed by Isaac Harnish, and Doris MacAfee, played by Mikayla Beers, are not exactly thrilled at the prospect of their daughter kissing

a rock ‘n’ roll star. “Birdie,” which is based loosely on Elvis Presley’s induction into the Army, is set in the late 1950s. While the story of Conrad and Kim plays out, Rosie is struggling to move forward in her relationship with Albert. The pair is impeded by Albert’s mother, Mae, played by Merry Yirga, who dislikes Rosie and continually takes steps to thwart the relationship. “It’s a challenge as Rosie to stay strong,” said Calix-Alvarado of her role. “She does show her sensitive spots.” Sauder noted that the role of Rosie stands out in the show for a number of reasons. “Even as Albert keeps folding … and she’s being picked on by her future mother-in-law, she rises above it, and in the end she triumphs,” said Sauder. “There are not many shows from this era that have a woman (character) with that strength.” Beidler pointed out that performing from a script written for a different era can be a challenge. “We’re doing a show set in the 1950s in 2019,” she said. “There

are a lot of things said in the show that you cannot say now.” Sauder agreed, noting that gender roles that were assumed during that time period have changed drastically. The show is known for catchy tunes, and the cast members are looking forward to presenting the songs with dances choreographed by Katie Sina-Kindig. Students mention “Put on a Happy Face,” “Honestly Sincere,” “The Telephone Hour,” and “A Lot of Livin’ to Do” as standout numbers Schnabel noted that he hopes to see audiences enjoying the show. “With a musical like ‘Bye Bye Birdie,’ (you can) a bring your (children) and parents (because it’s) fun for the whole family,” he said, adding, “It’s fun for the cast (too).” Advance tickets for the play may be purchased at www.lancaster mennonite.org under the Fine Arts tab or by calling 717-740-2456 or emailing boxoffice@lancaster mennonite.org. A discounted student price will be offered, and tickets to the matinee performance will also be discounted.
