SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

VOL LVIII • NO 41

A Rewarding Opportunity BY COURTNEY MENGEL

“Being fair queen means that I can represent our community in a positive way and that I can also be a role model for the youth in our community, which is super important to me,” said Brooke Smith, the daughter of Mark and Jennifer Smith of Lancaster. In October 2021, Brooke was crowned West Lampeter Fair queen and received a scholarship and cash prizes for herself and her sponsoring organization, which was the National Honor Society (NHS). Brooke noted that she was surprised when she was announced fair queen because she has minimal agricultural background, but she said she is excited to have the opportunity to give back to the community. As fair queen, Brooke represented the West Lampeter Community Fair at

the 2022 Pennsylvania State Fair Queen Competition at the Hershey Lodge & Convention Center from Jan. 20 to Jan. 22. “I was really grateful to have the opportunity, and I had so much fun,” stated Brooke. “I met a lot of really awesome girls who are so friendly, welcoming, and just really genuine about their love of their fair, which was really exciting.” The first day of the competition began with check-in, orientation, and 15-second stage introductions, where the 58 contestants stated their names, their hometowns and their fair, and shared a few remarks about their fair. Afterward, they enjoyed dinner and entertainment. The next day, Brooke attended a leadership seminar with Denise Lee, 1990 Pennsylvania state fair queen and later worked the communications table. In the afternoon, she had a six-minute personal interview

with the judges and then attended the judges’ reception, where the contestants were assessed based on their conversation skills. The evening concluded with a pizza party and team bonding exercises with Allison Neff, 2021 Pennsylvania state fair queen. The final day of the competition consisted of threeto five-minute speech presentations, youth day events, and the coronation rehearsal, banquet, and ceremony. “I just wanted to be able to give back to the community that’s given me so much over these past couple of years, especially with my cousin, who passed away this past year,” explained Brooke. “The community just rallied around me and my family, which was so special and incredible and really helped us through that time, so to be able to give back to the community was just my top priority.” See Brooke Smith pg 2

The first four people with Pennsylvania State Police Troop J - Lancaster to be trained with Project Lifesaver were (from left) Trooper First Class Chadwick Roberts, Sgt. Samantha Minnucci, Trooper Kelly Osborne, and administrative manager Shannon Cessna.

Trooper Kelly Osborne, a resident of Strasburg Township, has worked in Lancaster County since 2000. Over the years, she has developed friendships with several local police officers, state troopers, and employees of municipal departments, which is why she was surprised that she had never heard about Project Lifesaver until 2019. That year, Kelly decided to put her father, Courtney Osborne, in an assisted living facility because his dementia had worsened. Prior to that, Courtney had wandered at least twice, and on one occasion, he got lost while driving and was See Project Lifesaver pg 4

Whenever the ministry has leftovers, someone from the congregation takes them to Tenfold, which is an organization formed by the merger of Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership (LHOP) and Tabor Community Services in 2020. Tenfold offers housing advocacy and financial empowerment to Lancaster County residents. “There’s a good group of lay people who have just been so

Prior to the pandemic, people from both the congregation and the community came to the church, sat down, and enjoyed a meal and fellowship together. However, the ministry had to adjust to certain safety measures in 2020, so it was decided that the meals would be served as takeout in a drive-up format only. The meals have continued in this format and will do so for the foreseeable future. These meals are free to the public, but free will offerings are accepted to fund the ministry’s mission. “This is just part of our calling as Christians to engage in fellowship, to do an outreach to the community, and to kind of follow Jesus’ command to feed people,” said the Rev. Maureen L. Seifried, Ascension Lutheran Church pastor. “Being a Christian is about being in relationships with other people. We’re supposed to reach out and be in relationships with all sorts of people, so I think that’s kind of one of the core values of Joseph’s Table. It’s not just about feeding people; it’s about building those relationships with one another.” Seifried noted that members of the congregation volunteer their time and talents to preparing these meals to the community. They make a wide variety of dishes, such as meatloaf, chicken corn soup, tacos, lasagna, pork and sauerkraut. Sometimes, the ministry will do a pig roast because one of

Ephrata National Bank Posts Video Contest Ephrata National Bank (ENB) is accepting submissions for its “Lights, Camera, Save!” video contest, which is organized by the American Bankers Association Foundation. This national competition encourages teens to use video to communicate the value of sound money management and to set their peers on a sound financial path. “Lights, Camera, Save!” gives local students an opportunity to harness their creativity, learn about using money wisely and communicate those lessons with their peers. ENB believes that a strong financial education is critical to a successful future and the contest reinforces that message. To participate, students ages 13 to 18 must create a video lasting 30 seconds or less and focused on using money wisely. Students must provide the bank with a link to their video and a completed entry form by Thursday, March 31. The contest is open to filmmakers of all experience levels. ENB will host the first round of judging and select a winner to compete on the national level for one of three cash prizes. Additionally, the first-place winner will receive a local grand prize from ENB. National contestants will face off head-to-head in the first round of national judging on the American Bankers Association’s Instagram page at www.instagram.com/ americanbankersassociation, which will determine which videos advance to the second round of national judging. Videos will be judged on their quality, message and content and the criteria set forth by the contest’s official rules. To learn more about the “Lights, Camera, Save!” contest, visit www.lightscamerasave.com or www.epnb.com/lights camerasave.

Library Posts Clothing Collection During February, the Strasburg-Heisler Library, 143 Precision Ave., Strasburg, will host a Drop Your Drawers campaign to collect new underwear to be distributed within the community by LS Together. In its fifth year hosting the campaign, the library’s goal is to collect 1,000 pairs of underwear. LS Together will distribute

the donated underwear to schools and clothing banks. The availability of underwear at schools can provide students relief from embarrassment and keep them in the classroom, so they can focus on learning. Drop Your Drawers originated in Campbell, Ky., when a librarian in the public library had a conversation

with a local school nurse. The librarian was shocked to learn that the school nurses handed out hundreds of pairs of underwear, most of which they had purchased themselves, for students who needed them. The librarian contacted author Dav Pilkey for permission to use his Captain Underpants character to promote an underwear collection

Prior to Lampeter-Strasburg’s Lancaster-Lebanon League basketball matchup with Garden Spot on Feb. 8, the Pioneers recognized members of the 1955 section championship team. Don Duvall, Lloyd Gochenauer, and Earle Hershey from the Class of 1955 and Larry Lutz from the Class of 1956 were recognized at half-court, and then they congratulated this year’s section champs. In February 1955, Lampeter-Strasburg claimed its first basketball section championship, which, according to L-S records, was also the school’s first section championship in any sport. The team had a 9-2 record in the 1955 version of Section Three competition and had come-frombehind victories against New Holland, now known as Garden Spot, and beat Paradise, now known as Pequea Valley, in a one-game playoff by a score of 36-31 to claim the section crown.

CAP Squadron Seeks Drill Instructor Jesse Jones Composite Squadron 304 of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is seeking someone with recent military experience - possibly a recent drill instructor or drill sergeant to teach teenage cadet members leadership and military drill and ceremonies. Squadron 304 normally meets on Monday nights at Lancaster Airport, Lititz. In the upcoming months, the squadron is prohibited from meeting due to the recent surge in COVID-19. The squadron hopes to fill the role during this hiatus. CAP’s program includes

aerospace education, physical fitness, emergency services, and character development as well as military drill. The squadron uses a variety of skill sets within its diverse Air Force assigned missions and welcomes membership inquiries from all interested parties. To learn more, contact Senior Master Sgt. Glenn Knight at gknight@cap.gov or 717-6260136. Noncommissioned or petty officers E-4 and above can be appointed to an equivalent rank in CAP. In addition, information is available at www.gocivilairpatrol.com or www.cap.news.

Like this year’s team, the 1955 team did not have a lot of height, but the players made up for that with their ball handling, perimeter shooting, and defense. They won a couple of section games with scores of 77-31 and 76-36 and were coached by the late Ed Krause, a member of the L-S Hall of Fame. Krause was instrumental in creating Lampeter-Strasburg’s nickname, the Pioneers, the year after that first championship season.

Fulton Theatre Posts World Premiere Fulton Theatre, 12 N. Prince St., Lancaster, will continue the Ellen Arnold Groff Series, produced in the Tell Studio Theater, with the world premiere of “Changing Channels.” Shows will take place on select dates through Sunday, Feb. 20. Written by John Reeger, the play is set backstage at the DuMont Television Network in New York City during the Cold War, when some actors were blacklisted for their political beliefs. The show explores the space between fame and personal freedom and between acceptable dissent and political betrayal, all amidst the pressure of the rise of a hit comedy show. Kate Fahrner plays comedy actress Maggie Carlin alongside Rubén Flores as Peter Bell. Joining Fahrner and Flores are Peter Bisgaier as Eddie Gilroy and James Patterson as Bullets Bloomquist. Rounding out the cast is DJ Gleason as Kenny, who is making his Fulton debut. “Changing Channels” is directed by Kevin Earley, whose past Fulton activities include both performance and direction. Other members of the creative team include Marc Robin, Beth Dunkelberger, Jeff Cusano, Sophia Marshall, Paul Black, Tyler Mills, Seth Asa Sengel, Katelin Walsko, and Joey Abramowicz.
