Depression hit artist Jeremy Miller hard during the first shutdown in 2020. As a way of coping, he focused his paintbrush on an uplifting subject: sunflowers. “Every year, I do a collection. The way I keep myself motivated as an artist is to come up with an idea and work with it all year long,” Miller explained. He had initially planned to feature pottery, with the theme of service, but 2019’s collection, “Meet Me in the Garden,” had made a lasting impression. “When I was working on that show, the flower that showed up more than any other was the sunflower. As someone with depression, the yellow just makes you happy.”

Fire Company Schedules Mud Sale Alternative
“We normally make $75,000 from the mud sale, and we have to try to figure out ways to make money in different avenues,” said Isaac. All items will be available for takeout beginning at 10 a.m. Cash sales will be made on a first-come firstserved basis until all the food is sold. Chicken meals will include a half-chicken, a baked potato, a roll, coleslaw, a whoopie pie, and a beverage for one price. “We will

sell gallons and quarts, and we provide the container (for the chicken corn soup),” said Isaac. Organizers have devised a drive-up system where each car will be met by a volunteer who will take the order, and then the car will move forward for the occupants to receive their order. In December 2020, the fire company purchased a new piece of equipment called a Tac, a truck-sized apparatus that seats four volunteers, boasts four-wheel-drive, can hold 300 gallons of water, and is fitted with a pump. “We got it for smaller calls,” said Amos Fisher, who is co-chairing the fundraiser with Ivan Fisher. “(The idea is) to save wear and tear on the bigger units.” Amos said the $300,000 vehicle will be used for trash fires, brush fires, and car fires, among other calls when a full-size fire truck is not necessary. “It’s a smaller version of your basic fire engine,” said Amos,
I interviewed for a part-time job as a proofreader a few hours before my wedding rehearsal on Dec. 28, 2006. When I received the offer to join Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. as a full-time feature writer and photographer, I was buying last-minute decorating supplies in a discount store. I was so excited to have my first salaried professional job that I forgot to introduce the members of the bridal party to each other. One of my sisters later asked me who the person was who escorted her down the aisle.

“The fire company is not having their annual mud sale,” said Strasburg Fire Company member Isaac Fisher, who noted that the nearly 50-year tradition was canceled because the event is not advisable during the COVID-19 pandemic. Isaac is enthusiastic, however, about the alternative fundraiser the organization has planned, which will involve sales of chicken barbecue, soup, and sandwiches on the same day the mud sale would have been held. “We have done this before, and we usually sell out,” Isaac noted. On Friday, Feb. 26, the fire company will sell chicken corn soup only by takeout at the station, 203 Franklin St., Strasburg, from noon to 5 p.m. On Saturday, Feb. 27, a barbecue, soup, and sandwich sale
will feature chicken barbecue meals; chicken corn soup; American sub sandwiches with ham, lettuce, tomato, and onion; and ham and cheese sandwiches on round rolls.

“Less Snore, More Cuddle” Are you having trouble sleeping in 2021? If so, please... Take This Reader’s Quiz: 1. Do you snore at night, or sleep with someone who does? 2. Do you wake up with pain in your back or neck? 3. Do you share a bed with someone who wants a firmer or softer mattress than you? 4. Do you wish you could wake up more refreshed and full of energy? If you answered “Yes” twice or more, this story is for you.
Introducing “Less Snore, More Cuddle™” Sleep Systems The only sleep systems that provide a Cuddle Zone in the middle, while raising or lowering head or feet sections. This solves common health problems for couples who sleep together. Here are some of the healthy benefits:
The Snoring Solution Did you know that astronauts don’t snore in space? Snoring is made worse by gravity’s effect on the throat, which narrows the airway. For this reason, snoring can be cured by sleeping in zero gravity -- or on an adjustable Cuddle Zone sleep system to elevate you head.
Stop Compromising Your Sleep If you wish you half of the bed was firmer or softer, a Cuddle Zone system can help. With “His & Her” custom-fit technology, you get a firmness that’s just right for each of you, you keep the Cuddle Zone.
Back and Neck Pain, Gone Sleeping without pain requires body support and spinal alignment. Unlike “firm or soft” mattresses, Cuddle Zone systems support the spine and neck with 2 to 4 comfort layers.
More Energy, More Life Cuddle Zone systems help give you deep, restorative sleep. Your muscles repair and grow, and your brain flushes out toxins. You wake up refreshed and energized.
Budget Bed or Sleep System? Why visit a local store when you can shop online? Because we don’t sell budget beds. We offer sleep systems, combining mattress, adjustable base and pillow. Each fitted to your needs. You can even experience any sleep system in our Dream Room. No website does that.
And those “unbiased” mattress review websites? They’re often owned by huge, private equity firms. But we’re not a faceless company. We’re locally owned in Lancaster. When you shop here, you support the community.
Now Explore Your Options At Gardner’s Mattress & More, we’ve curated over 24 Cuddle Zone sleep systems for you to see in person, 7 days a week. Private appointments are available. People enjoy our shopping experience, in part because there’s no sales pressure ever. And we have over 200 verified stories of customer delight for your review. in the first period. Tied at 9-9 after four bouts, the Pioneers finished with six falls over the last eight bouts. “This was a great team effort,” said head coach Brad Heeter. “Matches are won and lost with bonus points. We have been fortunate this season to win the bonus points battle.” Joel Bitler’s 1:06 fall over Ethan Stoltzfus (160) broke a 9-9 tie. Liam Feister (172), Austin Reiff (113) and Conner Erb (120) all recorded first period falls while Treson Spahr (215) pulled out a thriller. Holding a slim 7-6 edge with :50 left, Spahr rolled Wyatt Kupres to his back for another L-S pin. Zach Shelley (285) followed, pinning Ryland Fittery in 3:20. “Tre had the match of the night,” said Heeter. “He is wrestling with an injury and it took a lot of heart to finish that match.” Arik Harnish opened the action with the fastest fall of the night, needing just 18 seconds to deck Uriah Warner. Alex Cardwell picked up an exciting 10-8 decision after holding to a 9-1 lead in the second period. “Joel is having a good season and both Austin and Arik are heading into the L-L League tournament with 14-1 records,” Heeter noted. “Zach is also heading into the tourney with one loss. The Pioneers were coming off a ten-point league win over Ephrata on February 6. L-S won four bouts by forfeit, securing 24 points. Of the nine bouts actually wrestled, the hosts won three. Harnish (132) earned the fastest fall of the day, decking Tanner McCracken in 41 seconds. Bitler (160) and Feister (172) also pinned. “We went nine days without a competition,” said Heeter. “We just came out flat.” BOWLING The Pioneer bowlers went up against the top team in Section Three on Thursday, Feb. 4 and despite suffering a 7-0 defeat, turned in some solid performances. “Kaite Pope rolled a 151 in her first game and Sawyer Lancaster had a 157 in game three,” said head coach John Achille. “Both were high games for the year.” Nick Bukowski continued to lead the Pioneers with a 537 series and a high game of 208. Ethan Snyder rolled a 201 in his second game and finished with a 511 series. Sawyer Lancaster (411) and Pope (381) rounded out the top four. Tuesday the Pioneers lost 7-0 to Northern Lebanon but “Bukowski and Snyder were way above their season average,” Achille noted. Snyder led the way with a 525
series and Bukowski followed at 492. Lancaster (401), Pope (381) and Evan Mize also contributed. SWIMMING The swim team opened post-season action Friday and Saturday, Feb. 5-6 at Wilson High School, competing in the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championships. The girls’ hit the water Friday and settled for a seventh-place team finish while the boys’ finished with a ninth-place effort. “The girls’ medaled in seven events and had 12 season best times,” lauded photo by Mona Steinhauer head coach Kylie Turner. During the workshop, clergy, program/ministry leaders and key stakeholders from various faith backgrounds will gather to explore their organizations’ beliefs, ideas, and attitudes toward addiction and substance use. Eventually, several of Miller’s more than 100 pieces of sunflower artwork made their way to the StrasburgHeisler Library, 143 Precision Ave., Strasburg, and into the hands of executive director Kristin Fernitz. Miller has served as a teaching artist at the library for the past three years, and since the shutdown, he has filmed art projects youngsters can do at home. At the request of children’s programs coordinator Wendy Jones, Miller made a video on sunflowers and talked about sadness and dealing with emotions. After seeing the sunflower art lesson and Miller’s artwork, Fernitz knew she had found the answer to a question that had been plaguing her: how could the library draw visitors’ attention to the back room where the library’s junior and young adult fiction collection is housed? She asked Miller to paint sunflowers on a closet door at the end of the hallway and make the background bright blue. Miller prepped the door at the end of 2020 and finished the painting in January. Using heavy-bodied acrylic paint, he applied ultramarine blue before adding two giant sunflowers that incorporate
five shades of yellow. “It’s gorgeous. You can’t miss it,” Fernitz said. “You walk in the front door, and it just grabs you.” “It creates a point of light in what could be a darker color,” Miller added, noting that he appreciates the metaphor for life. “During COVID, a lot of people were faced with ‘What’s my purpose?’ I’m not a nurse, not a doctor, not an essential worker. I’m an artist. But this is one way I can help. (This artwork) reminds us there are still reasons to hope and to invest in one another.” Visitors are encouraged to stop by the library, take selfies with the sunflowers, upload them to social media, and tag #StrasburgSunflowers, @sbglibrary, and @minisun flowersmiles. “Even if you need to cover up your beautiful smile (with a mask), you can still show others that you shine,” Miller said. “By tagging your photo, you also heighten awareness of the great things the library is doing in this remarkable little town.” For curbside hours and more information about the library, readers may visit www.strasburglibrary.org or call 717-687-8969.

Currently, he serves as the director of organizational communication/church relations at Lan-
dis Communities. Larry; his wife, Kendra; and their two sons attend East Petersburg Mennonite Church. MCCL, a program of Lancaster Mennonite School, is open to the community. Farewell from pg 1 That excitement continued on my first day, Jan. 8, 2007, as my predecessor, Ethan Riley, showed me the ropes … and then turned to anxiety when I was solely in charge of finding articles in a news cycle that never stopped. Eventually, however, I settled into the role of “Newspaper Lady,” one that I have been privileged to hold for 14 years. My clients have made all the difference. You invited me into your homes and into your hearts. I have so many fond memories: -Robah Hess teaching me to be careful with my instructions during photoshoots by popping out his dentures when I asked him to show me his teeth when he smiled. -Competing in the invitational milking contest at the Solanco Fair. -Being teased by Bethesda United Methodist Church members the first time I experimented with purple hair. -Standing in a pasture at Noble Hill Horse Rescue as horses grazed around us - and then one tried to eat my notepad. -Judging a cooking class contest at Penn Manor High School.
February 17, 2021 - 7
And there are the not-sofond memories: -The death of Lancaster County Master Gardener Tom Beck in 2015. This hit me hard because we had worked on numerous stories together. I treasure the giant allium that blooms outside my front door every spring; it was the party favor from the Master Gardener dinner where Tom and his wife, Betty, hosted me a few months before his passing. -The time I combined the names of two educators and misnamed Martin Meylin Middle School principal Jamie Raum in print. -The day I interviewed a group of individuals who had planted a new church - and then went to my next appointment and realized I was at the church they had left. I have always been grateful that I have not had to cover hard news. I have witnessed your joys and celebrations, your Eagle Scout achievements and fair queen coronations. There have been stories rooted in sorrows as well: 9/11 stair climbs and family members raising money for Relay For Life in memory of loved ones who died of cancer. I have been privy to your

frustrations and, at times, anger, but it has been a blessing to reassure you that “we publish only good news, so this is off the record.” Like it was for so many people, 2020 was a difficult year for me. As the year dragged on, I realized the time had come for me to try something different, to grow in a new direction. My last day as the Newspaper Lady was Feb. 5. I have moved on, but I have not moved away. Once it is safe to linger in person again, I will be eager to hear your updates, but not for publication. For that, send your news items to news@engleonline.com or call 717-892-6018 to talk to a member of our editorial staff. Farewell, and God bless.

Effort Aims To Provide Support United Way of Lancaster County (UWLC) will launch Share OUR Stimulus, a fund for stimulus check donations to be distributed to individuals who have experienced setbacks due to COVID-19. Inspired by the national campaign Share the Stimulus, UWLC will facilitate donations to be given as a one-time gift to people who apply for assistance through www.uwlanc.org/stimulus. Readers may visit the aforementioned website to donate all or part of their stimulus check. Those who make more than the stimulus threshold are also encouraged to give, as are organizations such as UWLC’s Catalyst Sponsors, including Lancaster County Community Foundation and Central Pennsylvania Food Bank which have each donated $10,000; M&T Bank which has contributed $7,500; and High Foundation which donated $5,000. In addition, Oaktree Outdoor Advertising is pledging to assist in promoting the fund through free billboard support. Whether someone received a stimulus check or not, he or she can support neighbors who are struggling to cover expenses not eligible for targeted support. For example, a young mother can receive WIC to help purchase baby formula, but diapers are disqualified. For more information, readers may visit the aforementioned website.

Prima Theatre will present the most celebrated tunes of Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra with two fresh takes: an on-the-move live performance and an on-demand concert. The on-demand concert will include stories of how the artists navigated the culture of their time and will offer insights into the power of prejudice, pop culture, and politics. Previously scheduled to be performed for a live audience, “Sammy & Sinatra” will be available beginning on Friday, March 12, as premium content on PrimaNOW, the theater’s online video platform, at www.prima theatre.org/now. Access to PrimaNOW is available for a nominal fee, while free for Prima Partners (donors) and season subscribers with an access code provided by Prima via email. A new offering has also been added titled “Sammy & Sinatra On-The-Move.” Traveling in a classic car, performers will utilize the vintage vehicle as a backdrop to present amplified and upbeat musical selections from the two crooners’ songbooks. Performances are available for March bookings at neighborhoods, homes, or businesses throughout Lancaster County, made possible by Michael’s Motor Cars and the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation.
