his year, 10 Lampeter-Strasburg High School (LSHS) students received Scholastic Art Awards, and 26 LSHS students received Lancaster County Young Artist Awards. Since 1923, the Scholastic Art Awards have identified students with exceptional artistic and literary talent and presented their work to the world. The awards give students opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication, and scholarships. The Lancaster County Young Artist Awards is a regional competition open to any student attending school in a participating district. Categories include apparel, ceramics and glass, computer art, drawing, fibers, graphic design, jewelry and metals, mixed media, painting, photography, portfolio, printmaking, and sculpture. Senior Emaly Garrett received a Silver Key in the Scholastic Art Awards for her portfolio. “I didn’t

just as beautiful as yours even if it’s so different,” said Cassie. Junior Nicholas Immel received a Gold Lancaster County Young Artist Award in jewelry and metalsmithing for a bracelet he made. “I like the idea that you can portray whatever you want to out of art,” he commented. “You can really put any emotion you want into it, and ... what emotion you put in can change the outcome quite a lot.” Senior Hollyn Miller has been awarded the Mitch Lyons Clay Scholarship, which was established by Red Raven Art Company and is given each year in memory of local ceramic artist Mitch Lyons. Hollyn will show at Red Raven as the emerging artist during August. “I’d like to thank our art department,” stated Hollyn. “We have such a good program, and none of this would be possible without my teachers.” In addition to Emaly, Cassie, Nicholas, and Hollyn, award winners were Maya Bowman, Nathan Romero, Abigail Crump, Sophia

Altobello, Bella Kennel, Anna Penry, Kira Fritz, Emma Colon, Hannah Brodersen, Radyja Manuela Nascimento de Lima, Madison McClune, Olivia McKinney, Chloe Beatty, Trinity Shirey, Skylar Sadaphal, Ellie Martin, Jessica Salgado, John Hansen, Lana Dyer, Emily Loraw, Riley Stoltzfus, and Maggie Swarr. The work of students who received Scholastic Art Awards will be displayed at the Demuth Museum, 120 E. King St., Lancaster, from Saturday, March 12, to Sunday, April 24. The work of students who received Lancaster County Young Artist Awards will be exhibited at the Lancaster Museum of Art, 135 N. Lime St., Lancaster, from Thursday, March 10, to Sunday, April 24. After graduating, Emaly plans to attend Eastern Michigan University to major in arts and entertainment management, minor in arts and marketing, and play lacrosse. Senior Cassie Meck received an American Visions nomination and a Gold Key in the Scholastic Art Awards for her ceramics piece. She made a canopic jar, a type of vessel used by ancient Egyptians to contain mummified organs. Based on this tradition, Cassie made her piece in remembrance of her grandfather who died last year. She filled the base of the jar with dead flowers she kept from her grandfather’s funeral, and in the hollowed head on the top of the jar, she planted a flower. “I just like that sometimes imperfections are what makes art so perfect, and someone else’s art is

For almost 100 years, Holy Trinity Catholic Church members have been serving up “a little bite of heaven.” That’s how they describe their homemade fastnachts, which will be sold at the church beginning on Monday, Feb. 28. Sales will continue Tuesday, March 1, and Wednesday, March 2, followed by Mondays and Wednesdays through March 23. Preparing the fastnachts which volunteer Jim Knapp said number 620 dozen each day requires a full battalion of workers. “We make the dough at night, and it rises overnight,” explained volunteer Karen Sahd, noting that the dough rises in special cupboards set up in Our Lady of the Angels School across the street from the church. “The next day, it gets rolled out and rises more, and then it’s fried.”

The rolling process is an allday job that begins at 4 a.m., and it includes exact steps, said volunteer Betty Mahan. “There is a specific way you have to roll them, and you never turn the dough,” she remarked. “You release the dough up from the table before you cut them. It’s a specific process.” Knapp, who has been volunteering with the fastnacht bake for about 15 years, is in the charge of the frying room and the glazing room. The fastnachts are available by the dozen either plain or glazed, and Knapp said the latter is the most popular choice. “Sixty-seven percent of what we sell are the glazed ones,” he noted, adding that the fastnachts are dunked fully in the glaze. Knapp explained that Holy Trinity’s fastnachts are nothing like a doughnut, although both have a hole in the middle. “A doughnut is cakebased, and these use yeast dough,” he said. “Ours have a unique taste you won’t find anywhere else.” Fastnachts were traditionally made on Shrove Tuesday to use up lard before Lent, which runs from Ash Wednesday to Easter. “We don’t use lard in ours, and we don’t stop making them the day before Lent,” Sahd said. “We actually go three weeks into Lent.” As Knapp joked, “We’re slow eaters.” In all seriousness, the sale is held annually as a fundraiser for Our Lady of the Angels School, which provides instruction to children through grade eight. Volunteer Kathleen Lutz said the fastnachts are so popular, they often sell out. “We have people who ship them out of state,” she said. “People also freeze them because they freeze well.”

Volunteers are invited to help with the fastnacht bake and they’ll be offered handson training, Mahan said, noting that no one is striving for perfection. “Our fastnachts are like snowflakes. No one is like the other,” she stated. “They are all handmade. No machines are used.” And on the rare occasion a fastnacht turns out that can’t be sold, it won’t go to waste. Explained Lutz, “There’s nothing better than getting to eat a reject.” Orders will be taken online only for fastnachts until sold out. To place an order, visit www.holytrinity columbiapa.com. Doors will open at 10 a.m. each day for pickup at the side entrance of the school, 404 Cherry St., Columbia. Orders not picked up by 1 p.m. will be resold on a first-come, firstserved basis. To volunteer with the fastnacht bake, call the parish office at 717684-2711.

Down 5-0 early, L-S rallied to lead 14-8 at the end of the first. Mechanicsburg closed the gap with a 21-19 second frame, leaving the hosts with a 33-29 advantage at the break. They opened the second half with a 7-0 run and the Wildcats never got closer than eight. Ty Burton netted 24 and Ben Wert chipped in with 17. Luka Vranich (9pts), Isaiah Parido (8pts, 6 rebounds), and Chase Smucker (4pts) also reached the scoring column. Luke Hines started for Berkeley Wagner, still nursing an ankle injury, and also scored eight points. Just prior to districts and for just the second time in school history, L-S rose to the top of the Lancaster-Lebanon League. Bonholtzer was Lampeter’s highest place winner at the District Three 3A Section 2 wrestling tournament held at Hempfield on Saturday, Feb. 19. Joel Bitler (172) and Liam Feister (189) both finished in fifth place and Connor Erb (113) was sixth. Bonholtzer (120) opened with a quarterfinals fall over Palmyra’s Stephan Stine but suffered a 4-2 semifinals loss to Solanco’s Weston Bare, the eventual second place finisher. Bare’s takedown in the first period proved to be the difference as both wrestlers scored two points each in the third period. In the consolation semis, Bonholtzer posted a 7-2 decision over E-town’s Austin Reitmeyer, setting him up against Schorr for the bronze. Bitler’s tournament began with a 1:26 fall over E-town’s Ian Brosey. In the quarterfinals, Bitler scored a 9-2 decision over Jace Jones of Palmyra to get to the semifinals opposite Township’s Kevin Olavarria. The eventual champ hung a 15-2 loss on Bitler. Wrestling back in the consi-semis, Bitler lost 3-2 against Solanco’s Blaine Plastino on a third period escape. He came back and finished fifth with a second win over Jones, this time 12-2. Feister, like Bitler, opened with a 1:14 fall and then ran into eventual champ Dylan

Bard, of Hempfield, and suffered a 3-1 loss. Clinging to a 2-1 lead, Bard escaped with 34 seconds left to seal Feister’s fate. Wrestling back, Feister earned a 4-0 decision over Township’s Jason Tu before suffering a 5-3 2tb loss over CD’s Eli Poyer. Feister earned a forfeit win over Central’s Rocco Daugherty to place. Erb lost twice to Central’s Braxton Keiffer. The first was a 3-0 result in the quarterfinals and the second was 5-2 in a battle for fifth place. In between, Erb won by forfeit, pinned McCaskey’s Hezekiah Molina-Hadgu and suffered a

13-0 major in the consi-semis against third place finisher Travis Clawson (PM). BOWLING Katie Pope, Ethan Snyder and Nick Burkowski all competed in the L-L League individual championships but did not advance past the six qualifying rounds. Pope rolled a six game 704 (117.3 avg per game), Snyder finished with an 896 (149.3 avg) and Burkowski settled for a 954 (159 avg). “They were a little disappointed that they all rolled below their average for the year,” said head coach John Achille.

If you’ve ever admired a Lancaster County landmark, chances are, Tom Hermansader has painted it. For more than 40 years, Hermansader has been making his mark on the art world, creating paintings of churches, houses, bridges, schools and more. Now 71, he’s selling his originals and hoping to find buyers in the area so the works can remain close to home.

house in Columbia to see if I could sell it, but I wasn’t sure how it would be received,” he said. “I ended up taking orders for 54 prints in the first two days.” Encouraged that perhaps he could eventually make a living as an artist, Hermansader kept painting, finding inspiration all over the county and beyond. He spends about 300 hours working on each painting, paying painstaking attention to detail from multiple photos he takes at the site. “Every brick, every stone in each building is exact,” he stated. “Nothing is estimated. I may be off by one, but I kind of doubt it.” In his painting of the Strasburg Rail Road, for example, he remembers counting 169 fence posts. His painting of the Veterans Memorial Bridge is exact down to the bridge’s bolts. His attention to detail and his focus on local landmarks has earned Hermansader an award from the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County.

Subjects of Hermansader’s work include Donegal Presbyterian Church, Wheatland, the Fulton Theatre, the Hans Herr House and Linden Hall. He recently sold an original of the Conestoga House to its new owner and is in the process of selling a painting of Lititz Moravian Church to a Lititz resident. Although he admits he has slowed down a bit with his painting, he is still finding local inspiration. He’s currently working on a painting of Steinman Park in downtown Lancaster. And he can’t imagine giving up what he loves anytime soon. “I must have something with my brain and my eye, because when I see certain colors or patterns, I’m happy,” he said. “I’ve been blessed in my life. Anything I liked, I’ve painted, and I’ve been able to do what I wanted to do.” For more information on Hermansader’s work, visit www.hermansadersart gallery.com, email him at tfhermansader@comcast.net or call him at 717-684-7899.

“I’d like my paintings to go to the places they feature,” he stated. “It’s a recorded piece of history.” Hermansader started dabbling in art as a child. “My dad was a painter, and ever since I was about 5 years old, I’ve been drawn to it,” he recalled. “It was almost like watching a magic show. He’d start with white paper, put a few strokes down and the next thing you know, it’s the beginning of a painting.” He first pursued art school, attending the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, but soon realized it would not be easy to make a living as an artist. He transferred to Kutztown University and earned a degree in art education before moving to Columbia and teaching art at Columbia High School from 1973 to 1989. Although he enjoyed teaching, he still had a passion to paint, and he created his first painting of a local site Wright’s Ferry Mansion in Columbia - in 1981. “I put the print on display at the market

Wiederseim To Sell Collection Of Ed And Carol Stoudt Of Stoudts’ Black Angus Brewery and Pub Sale To Take Place In Phoenixville On July 24

This is a vintage Wurlitzer juke box. Wiederseim Associates is pleased to offer the private collection of Carol and Ed Stoudt for auction on Saturday, July 24, at 9 a.m. The sale includes the contents of the legendary Stoudt’s Black Angus Restaurant and Brewery in Adamstown, Pa., as well as Ed and Carol’s private collection from their home. After over 30 years in business, Ed and Carol have sold the business and are seeking their next adventure.

The couple opened the Black Angus Antique Mall along with the restaurant and beer garden in the 1980s. Business was good. Why not open a brewery? Based on German beers brewed in the Reinheitsgebot tradition, the couple opened the brewery in 1987, with Carol becoming the first female brewmaster in the U.S. since Prohibition. Through the years, the couple traveled and collected extensively

for their business and home. They assembled items such as Black Forest carved furniture (including two tall case clocks), whimsical circus novelties, Art Nouveau brass chandeliers for the beer hall, carousel horses and an unusual carousel

running rooster, vintage posters, a large collection of German steins, a restored 1932 Auburn Convertible and a 1937 Ford Woody, partially restored, all of which will be in the July 24 sale. “If you’ve ever been to Stoudt’s, you’ll be very familiar with the items in this sale and won’t want to miss it. Their Oktoberfests were the best! Ed in his lederhosen leading the procession, the beer hall with great German food and the German band,” said Ted Wiederseim, auctioneer and owner of Wiederseim Associates Inc. “The Stoudt sale will be our first live sale in over a year, and we’re very excited about getting back to business as usual.” Bidding will be live/in-person as well as live online through Bidsquare, Invaluable and Liveauctioneers. A preview starts Monday, July 19, and runs through Friday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be held at Wiederseim’s facility, located at 1041 W. Bridge St., Phoenixville, Pa. For additional information, call 610-827-1910 or visit www.wiederseim.com.

The massive Art Deco brass chandeliers are from Stoudt’s Bier Hall.

July Is Customer Appreciation Month At The Emporium The Historic Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium in Burlington City, N.J., will continue its year-long celebration of 20 years in business with Customer Appreciation Month all July. The Emporium will give away three gift certificates at the end of the month. Three lucky customers will have a chance to win a $50, $25, or $15 gift certificate to the multidealer shop.
