Taking a seat at the table
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
MargaretThatcher once said, “If you want something done, ask a woman.” There’s a whole lot getting done in Lancaster County, because for the first time ever, all of the Chambers of Commerce in the county are led by women. Each woman brings a wealth of experience and a unique perspective to her role, but all of the leaders share a common goal: They want to make their community a great place to live and work.
Denise Grove, who started her role as executive director of the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce in February of 2022, said the job offers her a way to really connect with others. “As a lifetime resident of Elizabethtown, I had a strong desire to work where I could make a difference
and be a part of strengthening our community,” she remarked, a sentiment shared by Heather Valudes, who has been president and CEO of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce since June of 2022. “I love Lancaster and the work that we are able to advance to make our employer community as strong as possible,” she said, noting that the Lancaster Chamber is countywide and represents nearly 1,500 businesses, almost half of the county’s workforce.
For Ashley Zell, who became executive director of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce in January, the job brings a chance to get to know her community. “The friends and connections made and the interaction with the Chamber members and community at our numerous different events are definitely the biggest rewards of this
position,” Zell said.
The women also remarked that holding the job offers a chance to see their communities thrive. “It’s seeing kids dancing at the farmers market,” commented Rebecca Branle, who has been executive director of Venture Lititz since August of 2021. “It’s celebrating big wins with merchants. It’s watching this town become ever more alive with art, culture and community pride.” Her perspective matches that of Kristie Schmid, who has been executive director of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce since March of 2021. “I love seeing our community respond to the revitalization in town, the increase in businesses and the new community events,” Schmid said. “It’s fulfilling to put your time into something and then see others have pride in it as well.”

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will offer its yearly Reading on the Rails event on Saturday, March 11. The event will be included in regular museum admission and will incorporate book readings from various members of the community every 30 minutes after the museum opens at 10 a.m.
During the morning, community
members such as the director of the Strasburg-Heisler Library, a local author and the arts and communications manager from the Ware Center in Lancaster will have readings. In the afternoon, the director of the Railroad Museum and volunteers will present for attendees. Some of the books that will be read are on topics relating to the railroad; however, many readers choose to just bring their favorite books to share.

Reading on the Rails returns Scholarship available to Lancaster County students
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Several years ago, two local families donated a large amount of money to The Salvation Army. The organization decided to use the donation to create The Olga Ruth Stratton and Thomas E. Wolf Scholarship, which will benefit a select group of applicants from schools across the county.
The scholarship was created to assist students of low- to moderateincome households to receive a higher education, whether through earning a college degree or earning a trade. In order to be eligible to
receive the scholarship, students must be Lancaster County residents, demonstrate a need for financial assistance, have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher and be graduating seniors, among other requirements. Each student must submit a high school transcript, an academic recommendation letter, a community service-related recommendation letter and a one-page essay describing his or her career goals. For more information, visit www.salvationarmylancaster.org or contact 717-397-7565. The deadline to submit an application is Monday, March 20.

Joseph’s Table plans meal
Joseph’s Table at Ascension Lutheran Church, 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street, will offer a free “Luck of the Irish” takeout meal to members of the community on Thursday, March 16. Meals may be picked up from 5:30 to 6 p.m.
Visitors are asked to enter from Penn Grant Road and exit onto Shiprock Road. The meal is available to everyone. For more details, visit www.ascensionws.org or call 717-464-5683. If the Lampeter-Strasburg School District closes or cancels events, the meal will be canceled.
“We’re a big group of readers here at the Railroad Museum, so we enjoy the convergence of reading and railroading,” said Elizabeth Myers, program coordinator of the museum. “We always have a good mix of railroad and nonrailroad-themed books to share.”
During the afternoon portion of the event, therapy teams from Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services will be in attendance. Visitors will have an opportunity to practice reading to animals for this portion of Reading on the Rails.
The Railroad Museum of
Pennsylvania first started hosting the event over 10 years ago for National Read Across America Day. The museum decided to put its own spin on the holiday and tie the activities into railroading. Children who participate will receive a cardboard suitcase that they can decorate. For each reading that they attend, kids can earn a sticker to adorn their suitcase with, including a paw print sticker, which may be earned by reading to one of the service animals. “It’s fun to see the ways in which kids react to what’s being read. Each reader brings their own spin, and hopefully,
it fosters a lifelong love of reading in the community,” Myers said.
The museum will be among nearly 20 museums and historic sites along Pennsylvania’s Trails of History that will celebrate Charter Day on Sunday, March 12. The museum will offer free admission from noon to 4 p.m. Charter Day marks when King Charles II signed the original charter for the commonwealth of Pennsylvania in March 1681, conveying the land to William Penn.
We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.
FOODS
On Tuesday, April 4, registration will open for the museum’s summer camps. During the summer camps and the museum’s other children’s events, kids are able to view the museum’s collection from behind the scenes and learn more about railroading and its impact on history. “We talk about history and how railroading changed lives and communities,” Myers said. “We also show how it’s still used today to bridge the past and future.”

Pioneers regroup; top Warwick for seventh place
BY MONA STEINHAUER
After winning eight of their last nine games, and clinching the Section Three crown, the L-S boys’ basketball team embarked on the postseason. That part of the season, however, has not been kind.
After suffering a 52-50 loss to Warwick in the opening round of the L-L League playoffs back on February 13, and after a ten-day
layoff, including an opening round bye in the District Three Class 5A championships, the No. 2 seed Pioneers suffered a 35-26 upset loss against Hershey (No. 7) Thursday, February 23 at home, and then dropped a 65-40 result to No. 6 Milton Hershey four days later.
“I don’t have an answer,” said head coach Ed Berryman. “We were getting the shots we needed, they just weren’t falling. And we’re running into teams a little bit bigger, stronger, and faster.”
The shots finally started falling again last Wednesday when the Pioneers hosted Warwick in the District 5A seventh place game. The 70 points scored was only the second time this
season L-S hit that total. The first time was back in December when the Pioneers poured in 74 points in a victory over Elizabethtown. The defense held the Warriors to 55.
In a first quarter that featured three ties, Warwick’s Tyree Hughes scored on a putback before Trent Wagner buried a trey just before the buzzer, leaving Warwick in front, 20-19.
That lead, however, was shortlived. L-S scored the first eight points of the second quarter, including five by Chase Smucker to take a 27-20 lead. They never looked back.
The Pioneers finished with 17 points in the quarter, held the visitors to nine, and led 36-29 at the half.
Dean Herr converted a pair of steals into easy layups to start the second half and Luke Hines scored in the paint for Lampeter’s biggest lead of the night, 42-29. They finished that frame with a 14-10 advantage and outscored the Warriors 20-16 over the final eight minutes to
finish seventh.
“The first time we played them Luke was in foul trouble the whole game,” recalled Berryman. “That didn’t happen this time and we finally started making shots. Plus we took better care of the basketball and limited the turnovers.”
Hines, a senior, playing his last home game along with Tim Holmes and Ben Wert, who just recently underwent knee surgery, poured in a career-high 28 points, including 17 in the first half. Herr finished with 18 points and hit a pair of second half treys while Smucker rounded out the double figure scorers with 10. He also knocked down a pair of three-pointers. Yasin Abdi (7), Trent Wagner (3), Justin Glick (2) and Brady Grau (2) rounded out the scoring.
Against Milton Hershey on Monday, the Pioneers managed just one two-point basket in the entire first half but did manage to knock down four triples before falling behind 2915. They managed ten more points in the second half but gave up 36 in a lopsided loss.
The Spartans’ Adam Rosa, who poured in seven three-pointers, and led all scorers with 26 points. Herr and Wagner each hit two treys and Smucker led the way with nine points.
Thursday’s, February 23 loss to Hershey again saw L-S struggle on the offensive end but they did manage to hold a 19-12 lead at halftime. And, despite being outscored 11-7 in the third, still held a 26-23 advantage. But then the wheels fell off. Hershey poured in 12 points over the final eight minutes, denied the hosts a single point and pulled out a 35-26 come-from-behind win despite a dismal 2-for-14 showing from the free throw line.
Hines netted a game-high 15 points and was Lampeter’s only double-digit scorer.
Next up for the Pioneers is the PIAA tournament which gets underway Friday, March 17.
WRESTLING
Jaiden Newton and Trey Spahr were the last Pioneers standing this season. They qualified for the District Three/Southcentral Regional championships at Spring Grove High School, February 24-25, with the chance to secure a spot in the PIAA Championships. Both wrestlers, however, fell short in extending their season.
Spahr, wrestling at heavyweight, settled for fifth place, just one place
shy of advancing. He opened the tournament with an 8-3 decision over Garden Spot’s Mason Musser. After a scoreless first, Spahr worked a reversal in the second period and then took control with three third period takedowns.
In the quarterfinals, Spahr, a senior, made short work of Spring Grove’s Michael Hershey, pinning the junior in 1:02 to set up a semifinals bout opposite Layton Schmick, of Carlisle. Schmick, the eventual gold medalist, pinned in 1:34, dropping Spahr to the consolation semis. There he fell behind 6-0 before getting pinned in 1:49 by Avery Kuhns, of Chambersburg, the fourth-place finisher. Spahr finished fifth when Twin Valley’s Ean Winchester forfeited.
Spahr finishes his season at 26-10.
At 172, Newton, a senior, got off to a slow start, suffering an 11-5 opening round loss to Cocalico’s Jonathan Rathman, who had pinned Newton during the regular season. Rathman went on to finish in fifth place.
Newton (31-14) shook off that loss and worked an 8-1 lead over Spring Grove’s Connor Grubb before posting a 2:04 fall. That momentum was cut short when Collin Neal, of Boiling Springs, used a third period escape and takedown to extend a tight 5-3 lead after two periods. He was the sixth-place finisher.
BOWLING
Lampeter’s Katie Pope represented the Pioneers in the District Three Bowling championships held at Clearview Lanes in Mt. Joy on Saturday, February 25. In a field of 40 vying for the top six places, Pope rolled a 141, 118, 210, 148 and 191 for an 808 series, leaving her in 24th
place. The sixth and final cutoff series was a 973.
“Katie improved a ton from last year, where she finished near the bottom,” said head coach John Achille. “That third game was awesome. She’s a competitor and has continued to improve this entire season. She is a joy to coach.”
INDOOR TRACK
A handful of Pioneers, gearing up for spring track and field, capped their winter season at the PA Track and Field Coaches Association’s Indoor State Championships held at Penn State on Sunday, February 26.
Colin Whitaker was among the top finishers, placing third in the 3000 meters with a new school record time of 8:30.92, breaking his previous record of 8:35.27.
The distance medley relay (1200, 400, 800, 1600) team of Parker Stoner, Eric Doutrich, Luke Smith, and Ben Devine placed ninth with a time of 10:44 and Maggie Swarr added an 11th place finish in the shot put with a 34-11.75.

Scholarship
frompg 1
Once students submit their applications and the necessary documents, The Salvation Army will review them and schedule an interview with the students who qualify at its location at 131 S. Queen St., Lancaster. During the interview, each student will describe his or her vision and career plan and detail what school and major he or she has in mind. The Salvation Army will provide assistance beyond the scholarship itself by helping the students to locate additional resources that will help with secondary education.
“We believe in education and the next generation,” said Shady Boules, operations and development manager at The Salvation Army. “Going to college isn’t an easy decision to make and it’s not cheap. We believe that once students finish school and begin working, they will be in a position to give back to their communities.”
In previous years, The Salvation Army offered small scholarships to local students. The organization recently welcomed aboard many new officers who have decided to make a more concerted effort to support students in the county. The Salvation Army’s goal is to continue to award the scholarship to 15 students in Lancaster County each year.
The Salvation Army offers various other programs to Lancaster County residents throughout the year. On Fridays, the organization distributes food to over 100 local families, providing them with a box of essentials such as bread, soup, sandwiches, rice and breakfast items. The Salvation Army also provides financial assistance to families that need help paying for rent and utilities. Through the nonprofit’s Pathway of Hope program, families can receive financial and life coaching resources through lessons that cover topics such as budgeting, applying to jobs and creating resumes.
“We hope that one day, the people who we help will give back to the community when they can by assisting those in need,” Boules said.

For some of the Chamber leaders, the role is a full-time job. For others, it’s something they do in addition to other employment. As a financial adviser for Edward Jones, Jona Green serves as head of the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce on a volunteer basis, but she’s just as committed to that role as she is her paid job. “The biggest reward is absolutely the connection to our schools and community,” said Green, who has been leading her Chamber since March of 2022. “Our reach is large, but our heart is rooted in service and making more things possible for our members.”
Although each of the Chambers faces its own challenges, the direc-
tors all project positivity when it comes to their communities. “Right now, we see the biggest challenge for a number of our members to be finding enough employees,” said Kerry Meyers, who stepped down as executive director of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce after more than 11 years and is now executive assistant to Zell. “And for our small shops in Mount Joy, it is getting customers in their doors. We need the community to support small local businesses.”
Liz Ackerman, who has been executive director of the Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce since January of 2019, said her organization faces a challenge
of keeping pace with expansion. “We are growing at an exponential rate,” she explained, noting that she values maintaining a close connection with all of the Chamber’s 430plus members. “We pride ourselves on knowing every member’s name and understanding their needs.”
For some of the directors, being a female leader in the world of business has been a challenge they’ve faced with grace. “I have learned to embrace my leadership style and not shy away from opportunities to lead,” said Grove, noting that she attributes her success to surrounding herself with strong female role models. “Confidence in yourself is key. We all belong at the table, so be brave enough to pull up a chair. If you are afraid, do it anyway.”
That’s a feeling Branle said she understands. “My worst enemy has always been the negative voice in my head, telling me to question my worthiness,” she stated. “If you, too, have a voice like that, learn to tell her to be quiet.”
As committed as they are to their Chambers, all of the women have managed to find a work-life balance. Ackerman and her husband are raising two children, and she describes herself as a “serial volunteer” with numerous organizations. Ackerman advised that women should also be kind to themselves. “Own your talents and always accept a compliment,” she remarked. “This is one of the hardest things to learn, but recognizing your strengths, especially when someone points them out to you, provides a confidence that will reach far beyond anything you can read in a book.”
And don’t underestimate what you can achieve, Schmid said, adding, “Never limit yourself. Find your passion and put your all into developing it so you can bring your best to the table.”
