Promise Players to present “High Cotton” Registration open for IU13 conference
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
ThePromise Players theater group will present “High Cotton” for its spring production at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, on Friday to Sunday, March 17 through 19, and Thursday to Sunday, March 23 through 26. The Thursday and Friday shows will be held at 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays will
have a 2:30 p.m. matinee and a 7:30 p.m. show, and Sundays will have a 5 p.m. show to close the weekend.
Tickets are able to be purchased in advance but will be sold at the door on a first-come-first-served basis if they are still available. Admission for attendees 12 years old or younger may be paid with a donation of a canned good, which the Promise Players will donate to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’ food bank. Child care will
be available for young children during the show. To reserve a ticket, visit https://tinyurl.com/highcottonshow.
“High Cotton” takes place in the year 1929, just before the crash of the stock market. The play follows the lives of a wealthy mill owner and his workers and explores the disparity between the upper and lower classes. The story highlights the dynamics between the “haves” and the “have-nots” in a small town, while its characters wrestle with their pride and prejudices toward one another. The production is accompanied by the lively and jazzy music that is characteristic of the Roaring ’20s.
“There are a lot of factors that go into selecting a show, but we always look for a show that has a good, strong message,” said Dorothy Smith, the director of the play. “To me, the message is redemption. There’s hope for everybody.”
Smith has been involved with the Promise Players’ productions for nearly 10 years, but this is the first play that she is directing for the group. While preparing for the show, she noted that she made an effort to allow each actor to develop his or her character individually. Although Smith provided assistance by guiding the actors in their roles, she wanted to give them an opportunity to influence their roles with their unique personalities and thoughts.
Each of the Promise Players’ productions benefits a local nonprofit organization, which is often related to the message of the show. This year, the theater group will donate the funds raised by the play to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries, in addition to donations of canned goods. “The show focuses on the ‘haves’ and the ‘have-nots,’ so we thought it would be fitting to support a local organization that helps people who are struggling financially,” Smith said.

degree in special education from the University of Alberta, a master’s degree from Simon Fraser University and a doctorate from the University of British Columbia. She has collaborated with school districts and community organizations worldwide to promote inclusion in classrooms.
Morning breakout sessions will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, and afternoon breakout sessions will occur from 1 to 3 p.m. The sessions will focus on different aspects of education to assist administrators, special educators, general educators, substitute teachers and parents of students.

Scholarship offered to future EMTs and paramedics
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Michael P. McMahon was a true Renaissance man. A 1993 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School, he was a registered nurse, a flight attendant and a school bus driver. Each job offered Michael a chance to help people, something he truly believed in. Although he gave his all to everything he did, he was most passionate about his work as an emergency medical technician (EMT). When Michael passed away from colon cancer in October 2021, his family turned its grief into an opportunity to help others. The Michael P. McMahon
Scholarship for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was created to help any resident of Lancaster County who wishes to pursue an EMT, Advanced EMT or Paramedic Certification.
Michael was the oldest of four children and the son of Mike and Joanne McMahon. “He was loving, and he was loved by his family and friends,” Mike stated.
Added Joanne, “Michael’s life was so varied. You couldn’t put him in a box. If he was interested in something, he’d do it. … They say it’s the dash between the years on your gravestone that matters. Michael made the most of that dash.”

FUN EDUCATIONAL opportunities for CHILDYOURthis summer!
During the morning sessions, presenters will address topics such as the usage of e-cigarettes among students, the difference between decodable and leveled texts, techniques for educating students with autism spectrum disorder and how to creatively engage students with technology in the classroom. In the afternoon sessions, speakers will tackle issues such as managing exhaustion in both teachers and students, creating a safe environment for a diverse range of students and how to use innovative disciplinary practices. Presenters will include education consultants, social workers, teachers and psychologists.
When IU13 first began to host the conference, it primarily focused on special education topics, but the
organization decided to broaden the scope of subjects to include more areas of the schooling world. “A lot of conferences are geared towards a specific group, such as teachers or parents. This conference encompasses everyone; everyone can attend and find something relevant in a session,” said Linda Murr, program support liaison for IU13.
This will be the first IU13 education conference held since 2019, due to the cancellation of the event in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “A lot of people have been asking about when the event will happen again over the past few years,” Murr said. “We’re very excited to be bringing the conference back.”

Swimmers secure eight medals at districts
seventh-place medal was the result of a HS best 5:18.84. The senior also posted a personal best 13th place finish in the 200 IM and swam on two relays. He teamed with Ryan Smecker, Matthew Rota, and Christian Rota in the 200 medley that finished ninth. The same foursome, but in a different order, also placed ninth in the 200 free relay.
BY MONA STEINHAUER
With a record-tying 14 qualifiers, the Lampeter-Strasburg swim teams were bound to find success at the District Three Championships held Friday and Saturday, March 3-4 at Cumberland Valley High School. That success led to six individual medals, two relay medals, and two new school records.
“It was an exciting weekend with a number of standout efforts and PR’s,” said head coach Kylie Hearn. “We have five girls who will represent L-S at the state meet and four of them are returning state qualifiers. They will compete in five different events which is the
highest number of events that L-S has qualified for in school history!”
Zara Paisley led the charge, garnering a pair of district medals. The junior swam season bests in both the 50 and 100 free. Her 25.04 was good for a fourth-place medal in the 50 while a 54.28 was just behind Donegal’s Sierra Houck (54.27) in the 100 and secured the bronze medal.
Paisley also anchored both medal-winning relays. She joined Krista Lambert, Ashley Prouse and Kylie Gerhardt for a school record 1:43.29 in the 200 free relay and a fourthplace medal.
She also teamed with Prouse, Madelyn Juba, and
Gerhardt in the 400 free relay. Their 3:48.87 was a season best and brought home a fifth-place medal.
Gerhardt also medaled in the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke. The junior clocked a personal best 2:19.71 in the IM, good for fourth place and almost did the same thing in the backstroke. Her 1:01.39 personal record earned a fifthplace medal.
Ashley Prouse joined the success in the 100 fly, securing eighth place with a record-setting 1:01.75. She also swam a season best in the 100 free, where she finished in 10th place.
Wrapping up the medal winners was Kyle Spaulding. His
Other standout performers that contributed to Lampeter’s fifth place team finish included Claire Eckert (24th, 500 free), Madelyn Juba (19th, 200 free and 22nd, 200 IM), Lambert (17th - 50 free and 18th- 500 free) and Grace Schonour (22nd - 100 back PR).
Also swimming for the boys was Adam Zook (23rd- 100 free PR), M. Rota (10th - 100 fly PR and 17th- 100 breaststroke PR), C. Rota (15th- 100 back), and Smecker (11th- 200 free and 16th- 100 back).
L-S finished in 11th place overall.
Competing this weekend at Bucknell University will be Paisley (50 free and 100 free), Gerhardt (100 back), 200 free relay (Lambert, Prouse, Gerhardt and Paisley) and the 400 free relay (Prouse, Juba, Gerhardt, and Paisley).
BOWLING
Also competing in the postseason were two members of the bowling team. Katie Pope
and Ethan Snyder took part in the Eastern PA Regional Championships on Friday, March 3.
Pope bowled at Dutch Lanes while Snyder was at Leisure.
“Ethan and Katie have been 1-2 for us all season,” said head coach John Achille who was recently voted Coach of the Year. “They both had solid junior seasons, and both continue to improve. I expect bigger and better things from them and the team next season.”
Pope finished 82nd, rolling games of 179, 131, 145, 163 and 135 for a 753 series while Snyder, a Section Three all-star with the fifth highest average

Members of the boys’ team that qualified for the District Three Swimming Championships at Cumberland Valley High School on March 4 include (left to right): Christian Rota, Ryan Schecker, Adam Zook, Kyle Spaulding, and Matthew Roto.
Lampeter’s Ethan Snyder and Katie Pope competed in the Eastern PA Regional championships on March 3.
Joanne noted that her freespirited son loved to try new things, but one career path made all the difference. “Being an EMT and eventually a paramedic changed his life,” she shared. “He grew as a person. It made him who he was.”
When Joanne sat down to write Michael’s obituary, and she got to the part about giving flowers, she had another idea. “She said, ‘Let’s start a scholarship in his name,’” recalled Mike, noting that they asked family members and friends to contribute.
“Our goal is to find as many
people to help as we can,” said Joe McMahon, Michael’s brother. “We want to pay for as many as we can and give people the opportunity to do this as a career, to help people to do something every day that they can be proud of.”
Noted Mike, “This is a full scholarship, based on capability and need.” It will cover tuition up to $7,500.
To help develop the scholarship, the McMahon family reached out to the Lancaster County EMS Council, a nonprofit organization made up of representatives from all of
the EMS agencies serving Lancaster County. The initial scholarship was open to students and alumni at Lancaster Catholic High School, but a second round is being offered countywide.
The scholarship is open to both current students and
adults. “Michael was kind of a late bloomer, so the ideal candidate could be someone who has stayed home with their kids and now wants to get back into the workforce,” said Michael’s sister Mary Kate Walsh. “Or it could be someone who wants to change careers and needs finan-
cial support to do that.”
The scholarship is meant to be a stepping stone into a career that helps people, said Michael’s sister Colleen Murphy, who added, “We need more helpers in the world like my brother.”
The application process for the scholarship will run from
Saturday, April 1, through Friday, June 30. Scholarship winners will be notified by Monday, July 31. For more information, to obtain a scholarship application or to make a donation to the scholarship fund, contact Joe McMahon at joe@joemcmahonlaw.com.

We are fortunate to live in an area that has long been regarded as the “Garden Spot of America.” Generational farming is a part of the Lancaster County culture. In fact, we lead the nation in young farmers. According to the most recent Economic Impact study by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, 14% of farms in Pennsylvania had a young producer (defined as someone age 35 or younger) operating as the primary farmer. At last count, Lancaster County had 2,400 young producers, twice as
much as the second-ranked county in the nation, LaGrange County, Ind. In addition, Lancaster County leads the nation in farmland preservation, with more than 113,000 acres preserved. As promising as that sounds for the future, we’re still losing more than 1,200 acres of Lancaster County farmland each year to development, according to the Lancaster Farmland Trust (LFT), a nonprofit organization with the mission of preserving agriculture and stewarding the land in Lancaster County. For more information on LFT, visit https://lancasterfarm landtrust.org.
Farming can be a backbreaking, often undervalued vocation that doesn’t stop at 5 p.m. on Friday. Like we often do with first responders and the military, thank a farmer for his or her service to our community. Look at labels and buy locally. See where your milk, produce, and meat are coming from. When you shop at local supermarkets, if you don’t see local produce in season, ask why the store isn’t providing locally sourced foods. Encourage the store to offer local produce so shoppers can easily support local farmers.
The Lancaster County landscape is dotted with roadside produce stands when crops are in season. Most of these stands and farmers markets won’t open until later in the spring or summer. Below is a list of some of the many locations where you can get fresh local produce, meats, and cheeses.

Did you know?
Farmers and growers face a significant threat in the years to come as industrial agriculture operations continue to expand. According to the National Resources Defense Council, industrial agriculture is the large-scale, intensive production of crops and animals. Such operations make it more difficult for small farmers and growers to turn a profit, and they often involve the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
The use of such products poses an additional threat to small farmers and growers, as the Union of Concerned Scientists notes that the heavy application of fertilizers and pesticides accelerates soil erosion and increases pest problems.
Consumers concerned by the effects of industrial agriculture on the environment and on small farmers’ and growers’ ability to earn a good living can support efforts such as regenerative farming and organic farms.
