All The Way To The Top: FFA Members Receive State Keystone Degrees
GOTR Plans Breakfast
“This is not your traditional corporate breakfast,” said Katie Sandoe, executive director of Girls on the Run (GOTR), Lancaster. “We will have a GOTR team of girls greeting people, and it will have the true GOTR spirit and energy.” Sandoe encouraged area residents to “come to be inspired and connect and find some joy. This is the place to do it!” The GOTR Limitless Potential Breakfast, which will include three speakers and exercises to inspire attendees to a more authentic and meaningful existence, will be held at the Courtyard at Eden, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Friday, April 22, beginning at 8 a.m. Speakers will include Molly Barker, founder of GOTR International; Carrie Johnson, founder of GOTR Lancaster; and Lebanon; and Amber Sessoms, founder of Natural Inclinations. Each will share her story with the goal of reminding attendees of the importance of reflecting on and sharing one’s own story.

West Lampeter Community Fair. “It’s every FFA member’s dream to walk across the stage and get a Keystone degree,” commented Kyra. To current FFA members, she said, “Definitely don’t give up. A lot of times, I felt like I was not good enough to continue FFA or my SAE wasn’t good enough, but just keep pushing through and have perseverance. Eventually you will get to that goal.”
Much like Kyra, Melanie did not have any interest in joining FFA until after she saw a presentation. “I was like adopted by the group, and they made me feel like I was part of something good,” she explained. For her SAE, Melanie trained her horses. She competes in rodeo and is currently training her mare, Maisy. “You learn more in FFA
than you think,” stated Melanie. “You learn so many valuable and useful skills. Everyone says, ‘ W hatever you learn in high school, you’re never going to use again,’ but I think the skills that we learn in FFA, we will definitely use all of the time.” To learn more about Pennsylvania FFA Association, visit https://paffa.org.

The Power Of Stories BY ANN MEAD ASH
BY COURTNEY MENGEL
n Jan. 10, Garden Spot FFA members took a trip to Harrisburg for the Pennsylvania FFA Mid-Winter Convention, which is a state event held at the Pennsylvania Farm Show to recognize those who have received scholarships, awards, and degrees. During the convention, three Garden Spot FFA members and Lampeter-Strasburg High School seniors - Owen Risser, Kyra Benner, and Melanie Cox were awarded Keystone degrees. Receiving the Keystone degree is considered one of the most precious moments a Pennsylvania FFA member will have because the Keystone degree is the highest award achievable in FFA at the state level. Members are evaluated on their supervised agricultural experience (SAE) projects, FFA involvement, and community service. To receive this award, students must invest $1,000 or 300 hours toward their SAE and participate in 25 hours of community service, among other requirements. Owen served as a maintenance technician at his family’s business, Risser Grain, for his SAE. According to Owen, FFA has given him experiences and opportunities that helped him develop his career plans and his future. Kyra noted that she had no intention of joining FFA until her sophomore year, when the state officers came to her class and gave a presentation. The same year that Kyra applied to FFA and was accepted, she ran for office and served as historian for the 2020-21 academic year. “I love everything about FFA,” she said. “FFA members aren’t just your friends; they treat you like family. I feel very comfortable, and the environment is so welcoming.” Kyra based her SAE around her Market Dairy Beef Steer project. She raised a calf to a steer, which she exhibited and sold at the 2021

“When you have a wedding or baby shower, you get all your favorite people together that you haven’t seen in a really long time,” said Aubrey Kreider, director of marketing and communications at Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS). “New Danville’s annual campus celebration is like that, even though it’s changed a lot over the years.” For the first time in three years, LMS’ New Danville location will host its annual campus celebration. This year’s celebration will take place from noon to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 1, at 393 Long Lane, Lancaster. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event took on a different form in recent years, with an online auction in 2020 and a drivethrough chicken barbecue in 2021. This year’s fundraiser is unique in that it will be the last celebration at the New Danville location before LMS unifies prekindergarten through 12th grade at the
Lancaster campus on Lincoln Highway East in the fall. “It’ll be really fun to just have all those decades of people in one place to eat, have fun, get to be together, feel connected, and give New Danville a big hug,” stated Kreider.

Lampeter-Strasburg’s boys’ basketball team doesn’t have just one superstar - they have five. And when you put them together, they’re pretty tough to beat. In the District Three Championships at the Giant Center in Hershey on March 3 their collective efforts brought home the school’s second District Crown (the first came 20 years ago) with a decisive 66-57 victory over Shippensburg, who, ironically, knocked L-S out of the tournament a year ago. Shippensburg was bigger and probably a little stronger, but they weren’t as quick and they didn’t have the stamina L-S did. And yes, both teams advanced to the finals after surviving a triple OT semifinals contest. “Their home court is smaller,” said head coach Ed Berryman. “I thought they seemed a little tired on that big floor at the Giant Center.”

But still, the Greyhounds came out strong, going in front 12-5 before back-to-back threes by Berkeley Wagner and Isaiah Parido cut the lead to 12-11. Wagner (17 points) opened the second quarter with another three (LS finished with nine on the night, seven in the first half) and L-S never lost the lead after that. Wagner misses a shot two minutes into the second quarter but hustles back to pick off a pass on the baseline, dishes a pass to Ty Burton who finds Ben Wert for the layup and an 18-16 lead. “Berkeley plays so hard,” Berryman said. “He is our quarterback and coach on the floor.” Parido (11 points) adds back-toback threes that pushes the lead to 26-18 and blocks a shot at the buzzer, preserving a 29-20 lead at the break. “That was probably the best defense Isaiah has played all year,” noted Berryman. “He was tipping balls all over the place.” And let’s not forget Luka Vranich who continued to lead the team in rebounding, grabbing eight in addition to dishing out a team-high three assists.

Shipp made a run in the third quarter, outscoring L-S 18-14 and cutting the lead to five, 43-38, with an emphatic dunk by University of Minnesota football commit, Anthony Smith (19 points), just before the buzzer. “Luke Hines did a nice job putting a body on Smith,” Berryman said. “He’s a big kid and we were all trying to help out.” But the Pioneers were unfazed and put together not one but two big plays in the final frame to remain perfect on the year. Up 52-46, Burton was fouled on a step-back trey and converted for a four-point play and a ten-point cushion. And on their next series Parido and Ben Wert (10 points) executed a give and go with a couple of fakes that resulted in an easy Wert bucket and Lampeter’s largest lead of the night, 58-47. “They are just an unselfish bunch,” said Berryman. “They make that extra pass to share the ball and get the uncontested shot. That’s partly why we are so successful, as a team, from three-point range.” And on the floor in general. They share the ball. They pick each other up and they are all capable of and have come up with big plays. And now they focus on the next opponent, Penn Hills, in the PIAA opener. “There are no easy games,” said Berryman. “Every game is a challenge, and we take them one at a time. We

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Fighting to move up in the consolation bracket for a better seed for states, the lady Pioneers traveled to West York Friday, March 4. This one was close for three quarters and then the hosts pulled away for a 4136 victory, earning the seventh seed in the PIAA bracket. Each of the first three quarters was determined by a single point. L-S (15-11 overall) went into the final quarter with a 31-30 lead. They led 36-34 on Ella Horst’s jumper with 2:33 remaining but
didn’t score after that. “We missed four layups to build on that lead,” said head coach Tony Fink. “That was the difference. “I love these girls and they always compete and give themselves a chance. They have accomplished a lot after a 1-4 start.” Horst notched a game-high 14 points and Maggie Visniski, who went 5-for-6 from the foul line, added 11. Kiersten Hostetter (5), Jenna Daveler (4) and Katie Ranck (2) rounded out the scoring. GOTR from pg 1 “These three women will share how facing the truth of their own stories and learning from them and writing new endings led them to their purpose and how to live out their calling,” said Sandoe, who noted that the speakers will tell of how understanding the challenge and pain and joy that they experienced can be leveraged as a catalyst for change in others’ lives and the lives of communities. Sandoe noted that weathering more than two years of COVID-19 restrictions led
organizers to conceive of the event. “We have heard that people are really tired … that their souls are exhausted,” said Sandoe. “We asked, ‘How do we get through this year feeling more connected to ourselves … to one another, and to our community?’” Sandoe said that the GOTR team believes that people are craving the opportunity to learn something new and to come away informed, inspired, and hopeful. In addition to hearing the speakers, attendees will be asked to complete an
immersive exercise “where they can share their own stories, hear from one another, and encourage one another,” Sandoe noted. “(They) can walk away with some actionable steps they can use to make a positive change in their life and for others,” Sandoe stated. “It’s a time to hear powerful stories, share their own powerful stories, and walk away with hope and inspiration to make beautiful things happen this year.” Sponsorship opportunities are available for the breakfast,
but Sandoe noted that many businesses are purchasing tables so that they might bring employees as a personal development or wellness initiative. “Employees are reaching burnout, and this is a way to help,” she noted. The breakfast is a fundraiser, and there will be opportunities to give to GOTR. GOTR is a youth development program that encourages confidence, character, care, connection, competence, and contributing to community. About 50% of girls who participate are in need of scholarship funds to do so. Space is limited, and tickets are necessary to attend. Readers who wish to take part may register at www.gotrlancaster.org, by clicking on “News and Events.”

All proceeds from the campus celebration will benefit Christ-centered education through Lancaster Mennonite School.

Attendees, staff members, and students will celebrate and honor the history of the New Danville campus, which opened in 1940. The event will be in person, featuring a chicken barbecue meal, a walkthrough of the campus with a timeline of significant events throughout the campus’s history, a student performance of “Concert Through the Decades,” and an auction of campus memorabilia and baskets created by students in prekindergarten through fifth grade. All proceeds will benefit Christ-centered education through LMS. “ Whether people have come to the school or not, this celebration is just a great opportunity to learn about and support something that’s been in the community since 1940,” commented Kreider. Each chicken barbecue meal will include a half-chicken, a dinner roll, a baked potato, applesauce, and a bottle of water. An option to order chicken only will also be available. Tickets may be purchased in advance, which is strongly encouraged, at www.lancaster mennonite.org/new-danville -bbq-registration/. Online presales will close on Friday, March 18. Attendees may also purchase meals at the event on a first-come, firstserved basis while supplies last. For more information, search for “New Danville Campus Celebration” on Facebook. With the average farm in Lancaster County being 77 acres, Glory Be Farm in Manheim is considered small. Duane and Tina Sauder purchased the farm, where they raise Berkshire pigs, 23 years ago. Still, it wasn’t until January 2020 that they took the crucial first steps to make their small business dreams a reality. Just before the pandemic hit, the Sauders launched their pork snack line. Fast forward two years, and the business continues to grow. In addition to online sales, several Glory Be Farm products bearing the PA Preferred label can be purchased at locations in Manheim, Mount Joy, Lititz, Ephrata, and Elizabethtown. While selling their products is vital to the farm’s success, it’s the lifestyle that makes it meaningful for the Sauders. Like many local farmers, Duane and Tina come from multigenerational farms. The ninth generation of Tina’s family is currently working the Elizabethtown farm where she grew up. For the Sauders’ two daughters, helping out on the farm is part of their normal day. From assisting with the births of piglets to mucking out the stalls, 16-year-old

Riley and 13-year-old Morgan share the responsibilities of the family farm. Both girls are involved in 4-H and show pigs, beef, and goats. Passing a farm on to the next generation is often a challenge as children grow up and have interests apart from farming. “We’re blessed to be able to raise them in this lifestyle and culture. … It’s a passion and a lifestyle that you don’t clock
out from,” explained Tina. A florist by trade, Tina had to cut back her hours to focus more time on the farm. When talking about launching the pork snack line just before the pandemic hit, Tina said, “People were (focusing on) getting back to their roots, shopping local. So, while the world was turning upside down, it was a good time to start the business, but we didn’t know that.” See Farming pg 11

The Sauders share their farm life with followers on social media. With the popularity of farmhouse style, Tina says, many people think farming is a peaceful way of life, and they romanticize it. Using social media allows her to connect with people to share the culture and dispel myths associated with farming. “We love our livestock, and we always say that they have one bad day. …We give

them the best life we can (before that day),” she noted. The Sauders’ other goal is to raise awareness. “We’re looking to bridge the gap. … Americans are at least three generations removed from the farm. … It’s our job not only to provide but to educate,” said Tina. Though Glory Be Farm may be small, Duane and Tina’s passion for farming is vast. “It’s so important for us to inspire others to go after their dreams because there were times in our lives that were hardships, and the dream seemed unattainable. One time my husband and I were talking about it, and my husband said, ‘Well, if that ever happens, glory be to God,’ and that’s where the name (of the farm) came from,” Tina said. When asked if she had an advice for those considering farming or achieving any goal, Tina responded, “You have to take that first step of faith, because you can’t steer a parked car very well.”

Community Foundation Launches New Fund The Aastha Horizons Fund at the Lancaster County Community Foundation launched on Feb. 14, providing new opportunities for showing love for the community through collective giving. The fund was established by a group of local Asian-Indian professionals as a reflection of their care for Lancaster County and their commitment to supporting the community for the longterm. The fund began with nearly $50,000, and monies will support urgent community issues as well as build resources meant to continue into the future.
“Aastha” is a word in the Indian language meaning belief, faith, trust, and hope for a better tomorrow. The Aastha Horizons Fund will address community needs and will provide Asian-Indian American community members with a channel for collective philanthropy. Inspired by a shared passion for a welcoming Lancaster County that has supported their families and careers, the members of the founding Advisory Group came together to explore the idea of collective giving. The
group includes Dr. Manjeet Kaur, Dr. Rakesh Popli, Rao Sankarmanchi, Dr. Nishit Trivedi, and Deepa Balepur. The Community Foundation works with individuals, families, and businesses to design giving approaches that help to meet unique philanthropic goals. This collective giving approach, or giving circle, engages people with similar goals to work together and pool resources in order to maximize the impact of giving.
Working with the Community Foundation, the founding advisers designed a model that invites others to contribute to the Aastha Horizons Fund, with the volunteer Advisory Group determining how the dollars are granted. The Aastha Horizons Fund welcomes other donors to contribute their gifts, time, and suggestions for organizations to receive grants. Donors will also have the abili- The Aastha Horizons Fund’s Advisory Group consists of ty to donate pro bono services (from left) Rao Sankarmanchi, Deepa Balepur, Dr. Manjeet to benefit the community. UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT ISSUED COINS SEALED IN EACH BAG:

Q PENNSYLVANIA AREA RESIDENTS CASH IN: It’s hard to tell how much these unsearched Vault Bags loaded with rarely seen Gov’t issued coins that everyone will be trying to get could be worth someday. That’s because each Vault Bag is known to contain nearly 3 pounds of Gov’t issued coins some dating back to the 1800’s including all those shown in today’s publication. In addition, after each bag is loaded with over 200 rarely seen coins, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade of very good or above, the dates and mint marks are never searched to determine collector values. So you better believe at just $980 these unsearched Vault Bags are a real steal. Silver Liberty Head 1892-1915

“The vaults at Federated Mint are going empty,” said Laura A. Lynne, Director of Coin and Currency for Federated Mint. That’s because a decision by Federated Mint to release rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued coins, some worth up to 50 times their face value, means unsearched Vault Bags loaded with U. S. Gov’t issued coins dating back to the 1800’s are now being handed over to U.S. residents who find the first three digits of their zip code listed in today’s publication. “But don’t thank the Government. As Director of Coin and Currency for Federated Mint, I get paid to inform and educate the general public regarding U.S. coins. Ever since the decision by Federated Mint to release rarely seen Gov’t issued coins to the general public — I’m being asked how much are the unsearched Vault Bags worth? The answer is, there’s no way to tell. Coin values always fluctuate and there

are never any guarantees, but we do know this. Each unsearched bag weighs nearly 3 pounds and is known to contain rarely seen Morgan Silver Dollars and these coins alone could be worth $40 - $325 in collector value each according to The Official Red Book, a Guide Book of United States Coins. So there’s no telling what you’ll find until you search through all the coins. But you better believe at just $980 these unsearched Vault Bags are a steal, “said Lynne. “These are not ordinary coins you find in your pocket change. These are rarely seen silver, scarce, collectible and non-circulating U.S. coins dating back to the 1800’s so we won’t be surprised if thousands of U.S. residents claim as many as they can get their hands on. That’s because after the bags were loaded with nearly 3 pounds of Gov’t issued coins, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade quality of very good or above, the dates and mint marks were never searched to determine collector values and the bags were securely sealed. That means there’s no telling what you’ll find until you search all the coins,” said Lynne. The only thing U.S. residents who find their zip code printed in today’s publication need to do is call the National Toll-Free Hotline before the 48-hour deadline ends. This is very important. After the Vault Bags were loaded with over 200 Gov’t issued coins, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade quality of very good or above, the dates and mint marks were never searched to determine collector values. The Vault Bag fee has been set for $1,500 for residents who miss the 48-hour deadline, but for those U.S. residents who beat the 48-hour deadline the Vault Bag fee is just $980 as long as they call the National Toll-Free Hotline before the deadline ends. “Remember this, we cannot stop collectors from buying up all the unsearched bags of coins they can get in this special advertising announcement. And you better believe with each bag being loaded with nearly 3 pounds of Gov’t issued coins we’re guessing they’re going to go quick,” said Lynne. The phone lines will be ringing off the hook beginning at precisely 8:30 a.m. this morning. That’s because each unsearched Vault Bag is loaded with the rarely seen coins pictured left and highly sought after
