Mitzvah Kids Project To Benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities n September of 2021, Mitzvah Moms founders Gina Krouse of Lampeter and Gena Harting of Strasburg announced that there would be a Mitzvah Kids program for children age 5 and above. By completing good deeds, Mitzvah Moms aim to teach their children how to show kindness and look for ways to love their neighbors. The second Mitzvah Kids service project was led by 10-year-old Tate Reynolds, who decided to donate to an organization that helped his family when he was a toddler. At the age of 2, Tate had croup, which is an upper airway infection that blocks breathing, resulting in a distinctive barking cough. Tate had croup before when he was 6 months old, so his mother, Heather, could tell this case was more severe. After attempting to treat her son’s symptoms, Heather called a nurse, who told her that if he is able to sleep, he should be fine, but if she believed he should go to a hospital, then she should call an ambulance
I
and not drive him herself. At the time, Heather believed Tate was sleeping; however, he was unconscious. When he tried to breathe, his chest collapsed all the way to his spine. After Tate was seen by a doctor the next morning, Heather was instructed to take him to the hospital. They waited in the emergency room at a local hospital for about four hours until Tate was admitted and then flown via helicopter to Hershey Medical Center due to his condition. After spending one mostly sleepless night in Tate’s hospital room, Heather spent the following two nights at the Ronald McDonald House. Tate’s father, Curt, worked nights at the time, so when Heather slept, he would stay up with Tate at the hospital, and then he would go home to rest and take care of their dog. While at the Ronald McDonald House, Heather was given toiletries and meals at no cost. “ When I left the house that morning, I was taking Tate to a doctor’s appointment because he was
having problems breathing,” said Heather. “I had no idea we were going to end up at two different hospitals and have a helicopter ride, so I really was completely unprepared. (Because of the Ronald McDonald House,) I didn’t have to worry about anything.” The family has been donating resources to the Ronald McDonald House ever since. In fact, for Heather’s 40th birthday, in lieu of presents, she asked people to bring supplies for the Ronald McDonald House. Tate presented the idea of donating to the Ronald McDonald House at the Mitzvah Kids’ meeting in February. During their meeting, the children decorated cards for people staying at one of the organization’s locations. Heather and Tate plan to drop off their donation of handmade cards and personal hygiene items either at the end of April or in early May. “I think it’s good to give the Ronald McDonald House stuff because they helped my mom sleep well when I was sick,” said Tate. organizations. Every year, members raise funds for scholarships for graduating seniors at Lampeter-Strasburg High School. On Saturday, April 9, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., the Lampeter-Strasburg Area Woman’s Club will host its annual Tea With the American Girl Doll fundraiser. The event will take place in the pole barn behind Wesley United Methodist Church (UMC), 40 W. Main St., Strasburg. Every child who attends will receive a goodie bag, and one child will win American Girl doll Joss Kendrick, Girl of the Year 2020. The tea will be beachthemed because Joss is a surfer, and the event will feature food, refreshments, storytelling, a photo opportunity, a craft where attendees can make and decorate a surfboard for their doll, and giveaway drawings with prizes of doll clothes and furniture. Some of the proceeds from the giveaway drawings will benefit Gina Krouse, one of the founders of Mitzvah Moms, which is a group that creates gift baskets for those who are struggling with their physical or mental health or are experiencing other challenges. “ We have missed doing this event because it’s just so much fun to see the girls come in with their dolls and enjoy themselves,” said Benner. Tickets are available for purchase, and children must be accompanied by an adult. To make the event enjoyable for all who attend, Benner noted that there will be some prizes for the mothers as well. To purchase tickets, contact Benner at 717-572-7010 or at lswomansclub@gmail.com. ABC Keystone To Host Construction Management Course Associated Builders and Contractors Keystone Chapter (ABC Keystone) recently announced that the chapter has been chosen to host ABC National’s Project Management Institute (PMI) during the weeks of Monday, May 16, and Tuesday, July 19. The intensive, two-week PMI was developed by experienced contractors and Kirk
Alter, professor emeritus at Purdue University and president at Fast Management Inc., Indiana. Alter is a nationally recognized subject matter expert with decades of construction project management experience. Today’s contractors face unique challenges, and this education experience is tailored to provide tangible tools to
improve profitability, productivity, quality and customer satisfaction. The highly interactive, rapid-paced PMI will focus on project management essentials using real-world applications through interactive project management courses and contractor case studies. Participants will obtain the management tools and skills needed for individual success and for making a positive impact on their organization. Graduates will gain a comprehensive understanding of successfully handling all aspects of project management. The PMI is designed for company owners, project managers, estimators and any
employee involved in managing projects. The program will include 80 hours of instruction in two non-concurrent 40-hour sessions with an interim period between classes for applied assignments and reporting. Participants must attend both weeks of the PMI to complete the course. CLCP Concert from pg 1 The concert will be followed by a specialty dessert bar and live and silent auctions in the church’s Family Life Center building, which is located across the street from CLPC. Some of the items that will be featured in the silent and live auctions include a Coach tote bag, a Barnstormers package, Fulton Theatre tickets, American Music Theatre tickets, a handmade quilt, Longwood Gardens tickets, a spring flower planter, and artwork. “Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church is a talented and faithful congregation that believes in sharing its time, talents, and resources as gifts to be used in this world,” stated CLPC senior pastor John Hartman. “Our Spring Fling is just one example of putting our hearts, voices, hands, and feet to our faith.” Proceeds from this event will benefit CLPC’s “Restore His House” capital campaign for the newly renovated sanc-
tuary, which was built in the 1700s by a group of Christians who came together for worship, music, fellowship, and growth in their knowledge and love of God. Notable changes to the church include the newly exposed balcony, two fieldstone additions on either side of the bell tower, the restored ceiling with gold leaf details, the restored antique German stained-glass windows, and the refurbished wooden pews, dating to circa 1914. Renovations took about a year and a half to complete. “God calls us to do great things for His glory, and it has been a privilege to have been raised in this church where generations have shared in the responsibility of its upkeep, and, most recently, the restoration,” said Lauren Musser, event planner and capital campaign co-chair. “We’re excited to bring the community together and share the talents of the local

Spanish Writing Contest Announced The Latin American Alliance has announced its annual Spanish Literature Contest, which will have the theme “The Family.” The contest, which accepts poetry and short stories, is open to all students of the Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13 area studying the Spanish language, including students in middle school, high school, a college or university, or a trade school. With the desire to encourage and stimulate the learning, use, and mastery of the Spanish language, the Latin American Alliance organizes the contest each spring. The theme of “The Family” reflects an important dynamic within the Hispanic culture. The submitted works will be judged on their originality, creativity, and literary quality, along with correct usage of grammar, verb tenses, extent of vocabulary, and creativity of expression and presentation. After review by the judges, who are Hispanic business and community leaders, teachers, and musicians, the winners will be determined in each of the four divisions, based on the students’ Spanish level. Recognition and monetary prizes for first, second, and third places will be awarded in special ceremonies. Additionally, winners will be invited to share their poems in an event to be celebrated during Hispanic Heritage Month. For more information and complete contest rules, along with the submission form, can be found visit www.latin amera.org/literature-contest. Questions can be emailed to laca.lanco@gmail.com. The deadline for submissions is midnight on Thursday, March 31. This contest is one of the many programs of the Latin American Alliance to promote, maintain, celebrate, and share the Spanish language and the Latin American culture in Lancaster County. “Remember America” To Emphasize Education BY ANN MEAD ASH
Provided as a community service by this civic minded publication and the Association of Community Publishers R081004
“The mission (of Remember America) is to remind Americans of their unique heritage of liberty that was founded upon biblical principles,” said Dayspring Christian Academy events manager Lisa Becker. “Our hearts first need to be turned to the Lord, and that personal revival extends from us to our family to our community to our state to our nation.” The 2022 Remember America Speaker Series will feature Turning Point USA president and founder Charlie Kirk as the keynote speaker. This year’s presentation, which will include chorale performances and an orator, will be held at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster, on Saturday, April 23. The dinner will be served at 6 p.m. The keynote speech, which will begin at 7:15 p.m., will be followed by a brief question and
answer period. Kirk, an activist and radio show host, founded Turning Point USA with Bill Montgomery in 2012, and he currently serves as CEO of Turning Point Action and Turning Point Faith. Turning Point USA is a nonprofit organization with chapters promoting conservative values on high school, college, and university campuses. Dayspring headmaster Dan Stone said that organizers have been hoping to have Kirk participate in Remember America. “As I was praying through our short list (of speakers) … I felt education is prominent in people’s thinking right now,” said Stone. “It’s a great time to highlight how education is such an important part of what our country is going through.” Stone noted that it seemed natural to choose Kirk to speak on the importance of education in restoring the country to biblical values.
The theme of this year’s event is “Faith. Courage. Liberty.” “It starts with faith (because) in today’s world, Christians are being put in a position where they will choose to be courageous or not,” said Stone. We are calling people to choose courage, and liberty will be the result.” Becker agreed, noting that the theme reflects the study of the country’s foundation, which is at the heart of Remember America. “We are reminding people (that) the founding documents of our nation and the writings of our founders … (had) a biblical world view,” said Becker. She also noted that the faith of the founders was applied to the building of the nation. “When you look at some of our founders and what they have written, you understand these were men of faith who were willing to stand and sacrifice,” she said. “Their faith inspired their courage, and
what they endured established liberty like nothing else the world had ever seen.” Three types of tickets are available for the event. Readers may purchase tickets to the dinner and presentation, tickets to the gallery for the presentation only, or tickets to the presentation in a livestreamed format. Tickets are available at www.dayspringchristian.com or by calling the school at 717285-2000.

Feeding Families
Master Gardener Hotline Available
BY ANN MEAD ASH
SAIL (Systems Aligned in Learning), a product of a collaborative effort between United Way of Lancaster and Luthercare that began more than five years ago, has endeavored to give Lancaster County children access to high-quality child care. Utilizing peer mentors, the program has worked with inhome child care providers in a variety of ways to offer children and their families enhanced services. With the advent of COVID-19 and resulting restrictions, SAIL representatives knew they had to dig deeper to help families served by in-home child care providers. “One of the things we decided to do was to look at the emerging needs of the community in response to the pandemic,” said Ryan Fisher, assistant vice president of philanthropy with Luthercare. What they found resulted in SAIL honing its focus. “Through our collaborative with the United Way and with Lancaster General Health as our partner, we discovered there were a large number of families served by in-home child care providers that were food insecure and qualified for distribution from the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank,” said Fisher. By February, that research resulted in a pilot program that brought free produce and nonperishable foods to some of the families of the approximately 40 in-home child care providers served by SAIL mentors. Boxes of food, which included onions, cantaloupe, pasta, canned fruit,
SAIL representatives who helped deliver food to in-home child care providers for families in need include (from left) Lorita Valente, Heather Rotella, Jill Wagner, and Melissa Salgado.
and fruit juice, were delivered through the child care providers to low-income families that had been adversely affected by the challenges of the pandemic. Child care providers also received food and hand sanitizer. “It is our goal to continue (the program),” said Lorita Valente, executive director of community programs with Luthercare. “We plan to do it the last Thursday of every month at this point and add more (child care) providers and volunteers as we go along.” Volunteers are needed to help the boxes reach families around the county, ranging from Elizabethtown to Columbia to Gap. SAIL was part of the United Way Collective Impact Program beginning in 2016. More recently, grants from UPMC Pinnacle Foundation and the Steinman Foundation have sustained the program.
“(Those grants) enabled us to implement this food program,” said Fisher. SAIL peer mentors provide a variety of services to inhome providers, including help with obtaining and renewing licensure. Fisher noted that when an in-home provider is primarily Spanish-speaking, mentors may serve as translators. Valente added that mentors will support needs as varied as picking up and delivering items necessary for the day care or providing information on healthy eating. SAIL partners include Luthercare for Kids, the United Way of Lancaster, Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, the Library System of Lancaster County, and COBYS Family Services. Readers who are interested in volunteering to help with the food delivery may call 908612-6450.
