Clinic For Special Children Marks 30th Anniversary On April 4, 1989, a small pediatric practice was founded in Strasburg by Dr. Holmes Morton and his wife, Caroline Morton, along with concerned members of the medical, scientific, and Plain communities, to provide care to children with genetic or other complex disorders. The following year, a post-and-beamstyle building was r a i s e d b y P l a i n v o l u n t e e r s a t 5 3 5 Bunker Hill Road, Strasburg, and the Clinic for Special Children (CSC) was off and running. In the three decades since its founding, the CSC has developed from its modest roots into an internationally recognized leader and innovator in rare disease research and care. According to www.clinicforspecialchildren.org, the CSC is designed to be a medical home where children with complex genetic diseases can receive the primary pediatric care they need in an accessible,
The Clinic for Special Children is marking its 30th anniversary in April. From the beginning, the clinic has been a cooperative effort among the medical, scientific, and Plain communities, and the current staff serves more than 1,000 clients in Lancaster County and throughout the world. comfortable, and informed environment. The clinic’s primary but not exclusive focus is on treating the uninsured Amish and Mennonite communities of southeastern Pennsylvania. In 2018, CSC provided care to more than 1,000 active patients, and in its 30-year history, the clinic has treated patients from
42 states and 17 countries. “Caring for children with special needs is the work of a community, and for three decades, the clinic has bound us together in this common purpose,” said Dr. Kevin Strauss, the clinic’s medical director. “The CSC’s mission embodies an idea that challenges each
one of us to contribute; only together can we find new ways to enrich lives, alleviate suffering, and create hope. On the eve of the CSC’s 30th anniversary, we are grateful to all of those who have joined hands with us in this effort, and, in so doing, become part of a very special family.” See Clinic For Special Children pg 5

The fair is organized by LHOP and SoWe and will aim to provide helpful information for renters, homeowners, and buyers and sellers of property. Mortgage lenders, real estate agents, home inspectors, attorneys, and insurance agents will be among the exhibitors. Title companies and pest control agencies, along with the City of Lancaster, Pet Pantry of Lancaster County, and Lancaster-Lebanon Habitat, will also be represented. “We (will encourage) people to talk to each of the vendors and enter door prize drawings, said LHOP director of development Laurie Moir. All of the proceeds will go to North Star Initiative, which operates the Harbor Restoration Program, a trauma-informed, strength-based residential program intentionally designed to treat the needs of female survivors of sex trafficking. Clinic For Special Children from pg 1 In 1989, the genetic cause of disease was only known for a handful of disorders. Today, by utilizing CSC’s on-site biochemistry and genetics laboratory, which has been managed by Dr. Erik G. Puffenberger since 1998, more than 300 disease-causing genetic changes have been identified. In addition, in the 30 years since CSC’s founding, its staff members have published more than 110 peer-reviewed research papers, fueled by close internal collaboration between clinical and laboratory staff and effective cooperation with academic, scientific, and clinical partners. To commemorate the anniversary, the clinic will be selling a limited number of copies of “30 Stories for 30 Years,” a book that features
first-hand accounts written by clinic clients and families, as well as “Our Story in Newsletters,” a compilation of every clinic newsletter that has been published through 2018. These publications may be purchased in person at the clinic or by visiting https://clinicforspecialchildren .org/contact/store/. Proceeds from the sale of the books will aid the CSC in its efforts to provide affordable, cutting-edge care for clients. As a nonprofit organization, the CSC is primarily supported through community fundraising events and donations. Additionally, past and current clients and their families, as well as collaborators of the clinic, are invited to attend a 30th anniversary celebration drop-in between
3 and 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16. Guests may walk through the clinic and learn how it was established, what projects are being worked on, and what its future may hold. Mementos from the clinic’s history will be displayed, refreshments will be served, and copies of the anniversary books will be for sale. Admission to the celebration will be free of charge, but donations will be welcome. Anyone interested in providing any inkind or monetary donations to cover the cost of the event is invited to contact Julia Martin at jmartin@clinicforspecialchildren.org or 717-286-4288. Garden Symposium from pg 1 research, including information on rain gardens, pollinators, vegetables, and more. All of the Master Gardeners were given an opportunity to include tidbits about their own gardens in the event booklet, a copy of which every attendee will receive along with seeds, information, and other resources. Symposium attendees may visit the vendors during the breaks between sessions. Jourdan Cole of the Garden Media Group will kick things off by reviewing eight recent garden trends that encourage a love of nature. “People have been saying they’re looking forward to this (session), List said. Recently retired horticulture extension educator and Master Gardener Annette MaCoy will talk all about weeds and how to control them. List praised MaCoy’s knowledge base and noted that she has trained many of the Master Gardeners in Lancaster County. Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve executive director Miles Arnott will discuss the life cycles of early spring plants and their ecological benefit. “We don’t often use them (in planned gardens) because they’re not around very long, but they add a taste of spring when we’re yearning for it, List said.
“For a gardener, this is the place to be,â€? said symposium co-chair Brenda Walker. Fellow co-chair Holly List added, “It’s a wonderful place to talk with other gardeners.â€? The symposium will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. When the doors open at 7:45 a.m., a continental breakfast will be available, and attendees may shop the Gardeners’ Marketplace. Vendors will include sellers of stoneware and porcelain pottery, pollinator-attracting native plants, home and garden dĂŠcor, small-batch bath and body projects, succulents, herbs, perennials, and preplanned gardens. Walker explained that preplanned gardens are approximately six to eight complementary plants sold as a group. In addition to the businesses selling items, the Master Gardeners of Lancaster County will host the Garden Shed, offering gently used gardening materials as a preview of the group’s annual plant sale, which will be held on Saturday, May 4, this year. “These are true gardeners’ treasures,â€? Walker remarked. The newest class of Master Gardeners will display projects outlining the results of current
Kelly Gill is a pollinator conservation specialist for the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation and a partner biologist with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions. She will talk about native bees and their habitat needs, a topic that she frequently discusses during her role helping farmers, landowners, and others implement Farm Bill practices to conserve pollinators and other beneficial insects. In a second session, Gill will talk about designing and managing pollinator-friendly landscapes. “Even a pot on a patio will help pollinators, said Master Gardener and symposium committee member Dyan Eisenberger. “They can act as way stations for insects and birds during migration. Breakfast and lunch, as well as entries in the drawing for more than 100 prizes, will be included in the cost of attendance, and folks should register by Sunday, April 7, by visiting https://extension.psu.edu/wagner-garden or by calling the Penn State Registration Service at 877-345-0691 on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. For more information, readers may contact Master Gardener coordinator Lois Miklas at lim2@psu.edu or 717-394-6851.
