Get Ready For The Return Of Rails & Ales BY COURTNEY MENGEL
From 2016 to 2019, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, located at 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, hosted an annual Rails & Ales event, where attendees could sample unique craft beer of all types from
a variety of breweries while surrounded by the massive, historic trains in the museum’s 100,000square-foot Rolling Stock Hall. Shortly before the museum’s 2020 event, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the museum to temporarily close its doors. See Rails & Ales pg 2
Earl Rutledge Jr. (right) and daughter Mallory Rutt are the new varsity softball coaches at Lampeter-Strasburg High School.
A Father And Daughter Dynamic Duo fter the two varsity softball coaches at Lampeter-Strasburg High School (LSHS) resigned following the 2021 season, Earl Rutledge Jr. did not immediately jump on the opportunity to fill the vacancy. Growing up in Quarryville, Rutledge always thought he’d end up coaching softball at Solanco High School (SHS). But after praying and thinking about the odds of not just one, but two coaching positions to open up, Rutledge decided to reach out to his daughter, Mallory Rutt, to ask if she’d like to join him as his assistant. At first, Rutt was hesitant because she currently teaches Spanish at Solanco School District, so she had to get permission from her principal before she could apply for the position. After she received the green light, she and her dad made their potential employer aware that they were a package deal. Either they would coach together or not at all. This past January, LSHS announced that the father and daughter would get their wish. “I’ve always wanted to coach with
continued to play softball. She then taught at a school in Chester County, and while there, she coached a seventh-grade softball team for three years. Rutt noted that her experience coaching the team was a good way to ease into a different side of the sport. While Rutt was in college, her dad served as an assistant coach to his sister-in-law. The first year Rutledge and his sister-in-law coached together, the team won eight games, and two years later, the team made it to districts. Rutledge noted that he will be thinking about his late father-inlaw, Jack Melrath, this season. “He always came to every game my kids played. (Today) he’d probably come to practice, knowing that guy. He loved softball that much. I’m sure we’d have him in LSHS gear.” Both father and daughter are looking forward to this season. Rutledge’s son and Rutt’s husband have been helping to run practices. It truly is a family affair. “In general, we’re just excited for the season,” stated Rutt. “We have a good group of girls. They’re respectful, they’re fun, and the sky’s the limit for a lot of them. They just have a ton of potential.”
At the event, attendees will sample unique craft beer of all types from a variety of breweries while surrounded by the massive, historic trains.

Mal,” said Rutledge. “It just looks like it’s made to be.” Before he became a pitching coach when Rutt was 10 years old, Rutledge had prior experience as an athlete playing men’s fastpitch softball from the 1970s to the early 2000s. He traveled the world and played for 12 different teams over the years. On March 5, Rutledge was inducted into the USA/PA Softball of PA Hall of Fame. It wasn’t until 2007 that Rutledge learned how to coach a varsity softball team. As a freshman at SHS, Rutt was one of the two starting pitchers for the varsity team. Her coach, Brett Miller, had injured his arm, so Miller asked Rutledge to pitch at the team’s batting practice. He decided to stay around and watch Miller run practices. “I learned a lot,” said Rutledge. “As a coach, I’m very competitive about winning, but I want to teach you values that carry on after softball. Brett Miller does that so well at Solanco that people do not realize what he teaches besides softball.” After Rutt graduated from SHS in 2011, she attended Messiah University, where she studied Spanish and

The Splish, Splash Easter Egg Bash will take place at the Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA branch, 800 Village Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, April 2, from 9 a.m. to noon and at the City Center YMCA branch, 265 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster, on Saturday, April 9, from 9 a.m. to noon. This twist on the traditional Easter egg hunt will require kids to bring a basket, a swimsuit, and a towel because they will hunt for eggs in the pool. There will also be face painting and a small craft in the pool hallway, and the Easter Bunny will make an appearance. A golden egg will be hidden among the other Easter eggs, and the person who finds it will win a special prize. “Because this is a new event for the Lancaster and Lampeter-Strasburg branches, I’m excited to see how it goes,” commented Jenny Galloway, co-coordinator of the Splish, Splash Easter Egg Bash. “It’s important for people to know this is a really fun community event. It can be a way for kids to get in the water in a different way and kind of get their mind off the scariness of water and break

On the biggest stage of their young careers, the Pioneer swimmers made a splash at the PIAA Championships held at Bucknell University March 18-19. And while they did not finish high enough to medal, the Pioneers did post some top times. Zara Paisley, who finished fifth in Districts, recorded a lifetime best in the 100 freestyle with a 53.95. “That’s the first time Zara broke 54,” exclaimed head coach Kylie Turner. “She wound up finishing 13th in the state.” Earlier on Saturday, Paisley tied for 14th place with a 54.32 and returned to the B finals Saturday evening where she clocked her best time. The Pioneers’ 200 free relay also dropped their time. Krista Lambert, Kara Scranton, Ashley Prouse and Paisley broke their own school record, 1:44.26 set at districts, with a 1:43.58, settling for 18th place. Kylie Gerhardt, seeded 29th in the 100 backstroke, moved up to 25th with a 1:02.62 while Paisley, one of six sophomores competing in the 50 free, finished 20th. WRESTLING ALL-STARS Five Pioneer matmen were recently recognized at Section Two wrestling all-stars. Riley Bonholtzer (120) was a first team selection while Joel Bittler (172)
received second team and academic all-star recognition. Josh Heisey (145), Jaiden Newton (160) and Trenton Spahr (285) are honorable mention all stars. TENNIS While most of the spring sports teams were preparing for their season openers, the Pioneer
tennis team put up two wins against a single loss in the early going. L-S blanked both Penn Manor and Octorara 5-0 before suffering a 7-0 defeat at the hands of Lancaster Country Day. Weston Weaver and Andrew Reidenbaugh, playing No. 1 and 2 respectively, both earned singles
wins to lead the way. Kyle Pawson and Spencer Teaman, splitting action at No. 3, each secured a win. In doubles play, brothers Spencer and Cole Teaman picked up a No. 1 win over Octorara while Jack Harnish and Joseph Fitzgerald were No. 2 winners.
