host a game of bingo after intermission, and each attendee will receive one free card. “I am truly humbled and honored to be asked to headline the show with magicians whom I’ve looked up to since I was a teenager. It truly is a dream come true for me,” Brett remarked. “I know that each Rotary sponsors a different community organization. I am happy to be a part of these shows because I know they are making a difference in the communities they serve.” The Comedy and Magic Spectacular is the largest annual fundraiser of the Rotary Club of Lancaster South. The proceeds from ticket sales are used to fund scholarships to graduating seniors at Lampeter-Strasburg, Penn Manor, and Solanco high schools, and the club also contributes to youth programming at the Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA and to other community needs. Most recently, the group donated $5,000 each to capital campaigns run by the West Lampeter Township Community Foundation and the Southern End Community Association. “The biggest challenge that every illusionist faces is getting the audience to care about what you’re doing. At first, I thought it was fooling people. I thought that as long as no one knew how trick was done, I was good. However, no one likes to be fooled,” Brett commented. “How then do you take an art form that is based upon deception and make it enjoyable? You master the art of entertainment and by making the performance about how good you make the audience feel. You inspire them to dream that anything is possible, to experience childlike wonder again, and to be surprised and delighted by what you’re doing.” Folks who would like to experience all of that and more may purchase tickets for the Comedy and Magic Spectacular at www.lanc southrotary.org or at the Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA, 800 Village Road, Lancaster.

part of the 19th annual Comedy and Magic Spectacular that will be hosted by the Rotary Club of Lancaster South on Saturday, April 13, at 7 p.m. at Lampeter-Strasburg High School, 1600 Book Road, Lancaster. Brett grew up in Chambersburg and began learning illusions as a hobby when he was 14. He first performed for his parents and then for classmates and friends. As a high school senior, Brett began partnering with churches and other nonprofit organizations to use illusions as a way to share a message of love and hope. By his mid-20s, Brett was performing full time, both in the United States and around the world. “We partnered with organizations like HOPE International to help raise funds to make poverty disappear,” Brett quipped. Labrina brings comedic talents and dynamic performing to the Myerses’ act, Brett said. Labrina grew up in Tennessee, and the couple met at a magic conference in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. Brett’s magic mentor, Duane Laflin, had hired Labrina to help him with his magic theater shows. When Brett arrived for the conference, Laflin’s wife, Mary, played matchmaker. Brett and Labrina balance a career and raising a family. The couple has been performing regularly, and for nine months in each of the past four years, they have performed their Magic & Wonder Show at a theater in Bird-in-Hand. On April 13, the couple will present part of their show from the 2018 season. “The audience can expect to see a wide array of illusions that surprise and delight,” Brett promised. “They can expect to see people appear and disappear right before their eyes. They’ll see our full cast show with dazzling costumes.” Other performers during the Comedy and Magic Spectacular will include innovative magician Tony Chapek, Cuban illusionist Jarol Martin, and master of ceremonies R.G. They tallied 35 runs on 27 hits over those six innings. “I don’t feel we have a weak link in the lineup,” stated head coach Gene Charles. “And we’re hitting the ball hard up and down the roster. But we face two of our toughest Section Two opponents in Elizabethtown and Solanco this week so we’ll see how things pan out.” Chloe Blantz (2-3) was the only multiple hitter in Lampeter’s 10-hit effort against Lebanon. Gabby Drumm added a three-run homer to spark a five-run third inning and Tayrn Hostetter finished with three RBI. Brynne Baker gave up one hit and struck out four to earn the win. Julz Garber, who went 4-4, led Friday’s 17 hit attack against Ephrata. Baker (1-2, 3 RBI) provided a three-run homer in the first inning and Blantz (2-4, 4 RBI) added a two-run double helping push out to an 8-0 advantage. After scoring just two in the second inning, Emily Platt’s three-run homer provided the spark in a 10 run third inning. Drumm (2-4), Cam Byler (2-2) and Carissa Hurt (2-2) also contributed. “Carissa is a JV player,” noted Charles. “She picked up her first varsity hits.” In the circle, Baker, Drumm (3 strikeouts) and freshman Keiva Middleton (2K) all pitched one inning.

win at No. 4. The Pioneers were coming off a 6-1 loss to Section Three leader Pequea Valley on Tuesday. Braun and Kelly, with a hardfought 8-5 No. 3 doubles win over Josh Heinrich and Nehemiah Glick prevented the shutout. BASEBALL With nine returning starters and three key newcomers, the baseball team will look to at least match, if not improve upon, last year’s 17-7 overall mark. With two wins last week, they currently sit on top of Section Two along with Solanco, who they take on this Friday. The Pioneers, with 11 hits on the day, used a five-run sixth inning to pull away for an 8-1 win over Lebanon last Wednesday. Up 3-0 after five complete innings, L-S got two hits from Hunter Cunningham in a pivotal bat-around fifth. Cunningham and Derek Eckman connected with back-to-back doubles, Eckman’s pushing the lead to 4-0. After a walk, Alex Knapp (3-4, two runs scored) singled and Taso Kovack singled him home. Thomas Shockey worked a run scoring walk and Schneider (1-2, 2 RBI) followed with a two run single to left, extending the advantage to 8-0. Cunningham (2-4, one run scored) followed with a base hit that loaded the bases before an infield pop out ended the inning. With the depth of nine different pitchers, the Pioneers took control on the hill as well against the Cedars. Aaron Snyder, Ryan Guyer and Braedon Karpathios combined for 14 strikeouts, gave up four walks and four hits. At home on Friday L-S won a tightly contested 3-1 outing against Ephrata, scoring all the runs they needed in the first two innings. Shockey opened with a double and courtesy runner Alex Knapp scored on Dylan Byler’s single to left field. They made it 2-0 in the second inning. Patrick Holmes and Kovac connected with back-to-back base hits.

teams opened the season in dominating fashion last Tuesday in New Holland. Both squads won all but two events and scored over 100 team points. The boys’ won 121-19 and were led by Josiah Zehr and Ezra Mellinger. Zehr, a senior, commanded both hurdle events (15.9 and 42.8) and cleared 12-0 to win the pole vault while Mellinger, also a senior, set new school records in both the 100 (10.5) and 200 meter (21.7) sprints and won the long jump (22-9.5). “Ezra had a phenomenal winter season (All-State, State Athlete of the Year, All-American and second place finish at Nationals) and wasted no time in breaking a couple of school records,” said head coach Calvin Esh. The Pioneers were solid in the field, especially the throws where they gave up just one point. “We have a strong throwing squad with real depth, ” Esh noted. Gabe Frederick won the shot (50-4) and was second in the discus, Jacob Long took the discus with a 133-6 and Alex Stoeffler was tops in the javelin (170-2) and finished second in the shot.

Water Street Mission in Lancaster recently received a Model 6600 platform floor scale, donated by Pennsylvania Scale Company, to simplify the weighing of food donations. The Water Street Mission is a nonprofit organization that offers food, shelter, and health services to people who are homeless. The Mission accepts hundreds of thousands of pounds in food donations annually and serves more than 400 meals each day. The new scale was installed in the Mission’s loading dock area where it will weigh food donations as they arrive. The 48-by-48-inch scale platform allows dock receivers to easily place and weigh a wide array of box or container sizes and can also accommodate bags and other items.

At the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new pedestrian bridge in the Providence Township section of the Enola Low Grade Trail on June 9, 2018, state officials said they envisioned a marathon being held on the former Pennsylvania Railroad branch line that linked Atglen with the Susquehanna River. However, while progress on the trail has continued, the segments are disconnected, so a

marathon is a ways into the future. In the meantime, Providence Township officials have planned a shorter race that will take place on the portion of the trail that starts east of Quarryville borough and runs west through the township. The Enola Low Grade Trail Trot 5K/10K and children’s fun run will be held on Saturday, April 27. Onsite registration will be open from 8 to 9 a.m., and the race will kick off at 9:30 a.m. The fun run for youngsters age 12 and under will start at 10:45 a.m. The award presentation will be held at the finish line at 11 a.m.

The race will start and finish at the Groff trailhead parking lot, 301 E. State St., Quarryville. Providence Township zoning officer Heidi Martinez, who is organizing the race with township administrative assistant Chris Harnish, noted that they have not yet measured the 2.5-kilometer and 5-kilometer turning points on the trail, but those spots will be clearly marked on April 27. There will be water stations on the course and at the start/finish line. Benches at the trailhead and on the course will provide seating for spectators. Event sponsors will have booths

offering a variety of information and activities at the trailhead as well. The trail is flat, with just a 1percent grade, and is primarily covered with crushed gravel. The access at the Groff trailhead is more rugged, which may pose a challenge for strollers, but strollers will be welcome on the course. Well-behaved pets on leashes will also be permitted. “We’re trying that to see how it goes,” Martinez commented about the inclusion of pets. The entire process is a learning experience, but the Trail Trot is not without precedent. “We have had two other organizations do runs on the trail that were pretty successful,” Martinez said. The Trail Trot organizers hope that this event will also be successful, as proceeds will be used to maintain the trail and to host the township’s second annual National Night Out event, which will be held this year on Tuesday, Aug. 6. Organizers hope to build on the inaugural National Night Out event. “It was an amazing turnout, with 400 to 500 people attending,” Martinez recalled. “We’re hoping to have just as many people, if not more, (at the next one).” Martinez explained that the purpose of National Night Out is to build camaraderie among first responders and residents, promote Neighborhood Watch groups, and prevent crime and unlawful drug use. Providence Township’s National Night Out is open to residents of all municipalities in the Southern End. Last year’s event featured four fire companies, several police and sheriff departments, the Southern End Community Association, and the Next Gen Senior Center. There were games, a bounce house, and a barrel train. Martinez said she would like to include a candy drop and a K-9 unit at the next event. Maintenance of the Enola Low Grade Trail includes installing new kiosks, keeping benches in good condition, and managing the plants that line the trail. The township’s road crew monitors the trail surface, and Parks and Recreation workers provide cleanup services. Volunteers are welcome to join the Parks and Recreation committee, which meets on the second Thursday of alternating months. The next meeting will be held on May 9 at 7 p.m. at the township office, 200 Mount Airy Road, New Providence. Folks may also volunteer to help with the Trail Trot. A cost has been set to enter the Trail Trot; the children’s fun run is free. Folks who register by Friday, April 12, will receive a discount and will be guaranteed an event shirt. After April 12 and on race day, the full price will be charged for registration, and shirts will be available as supplies last. To register, readers may download an application at www.providencetownship.com or register at www.pretzelcity sports.com/online-registration/ for a nominal service fee. Pictured on front:

Good Samaritan Services (GSS) is a Chester County- and Lancaster County-based organization that provides emergency shelter and transitional and permanent housing for those experiencing homelessness. To honor the 10th anniversary of CEO Nate Hoffer’s leadership at Good Samaritan Services (GSS), GSS board and staff have launched a campaign to fund permanent housing rental assistance for the organization’s Bridge of Hope @ GSS program. Through the “It’s Good to Be Home!” campaign, GSS is seeking businesses, churches, schools, community groups and individuals to make donations or set up fundraising teams to help avert eviction and homelessness for single women with children in Chester and Lancaster counties. When Hoffer was appointed as leader of GSS 10 years ago, the organization had three houses and served approximately 15 men in emergency shelter and transitional housing in a year. Now, GSS serves more than 185 men, women and children every year, working across the spectrum of needs, from emergency shelter and transitional housing to long-term affordable housing and permanent housing, with additional programs like matched savings, microfinance, mentoring and job training. Dayspring To Present “My Fair Lady” Dayspring Christian Academy, 120 College Ave., Mountville, will present a pilot school edition of Lerner and Loewe’s “My Fair Lady” as its 2019 upper school spring musical. The show will be performed on Friday, April 5, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, April 6, at 2 and 7 p.m. in the school’s auditorium. The show is being presented through arrangement with Music Theatre International. Lerner and Loewe’s “My Fair Lady,” based on George Bernard Shaw’s play “Pygmalion,” centers around a Cockney flower girl,

Eliza Doolittle. Due to her poor accent, Eliza enlists the help of a phonetics professor, Henry Higgins, who believes he can teach any woman to speak so properly she could be mistaken for a duchess. Eliza hopes she will sound more like a lady in order to work in a flower shop. The musical highlights the comedic yet complex relationship between Eliza and Henry as they form an unlikely friendship. According to the school, “My Fair Lady” offers insight on the struggle of finding one’s identity, the power of words, and transformation.

“It is a musical about words,” noted director Joanne Kroll. “They have power - what we say, how we say it, and what actions are behind them. Words can bring life or death. “It is also about transformation,” Kroll continued. “If the characters in the show can be transformed, there is grace and hope for us all to be transformed by God when we allow Him.” “My Fair Lady” features a cast of 28 students from sixth through 12th grades, including Spencer Esh as Henry Higgins, Areanna Kroll as Eliza Doolittle, Cameron MacKilligan as Col. Pickering, Noah Sierocinski as Alfred Doolittle, Zoe Martin as Mrs. Pearce, and Jackson Stone as Freddy Eynsford-Hill. Tickets for the musical are available at www.DayspringChristian .com or by calling 717-285-2000.

Quedenfeld Earns Academic Honor Dayspring Christian Academy students (from left) Cameron MacKilligan as Col. Pickering, Areanna Kroll as Eliza Doolittle, and Spencer Esh as Henry Higgins prepare to bring Lerner and Loewe’s “My Fair Lady” to life on the stage at the school in Mountville on April 5 and 6. The pilot school edition of the production is Dayspring’s 2019 upper school spring musical.

Theresa Quedenfeld of Willow Street was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society on Feb. 26 at Kutztown University, Kutztown. Phi Kappa Phi is a collegiate honor society that inducts persons from every academic discipline.
