OnApril 2, Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, opened “Elementary & The Middle,” an art exhibit that features work from students from first to eighth grades. The exhibit includes students from across the county and will remain in the Kauffman Gallery until Sunday, April 23.

LCAA first held the exhibit last year as a way to encourage young artists to engage with the arts. Prior to the opening, this year LCAA contacted schools from around Lancaster County to invite their art classes to participate. Certain classes chose a specific theme for their students to work within, but the exhibit includes artwork from a variety of mediums such as pastels, oil painting and drawing. “Even just being able to work on the creative side of one’s personality helps in other areas like math and problem solving,” said Patricia Keller of Landisville, who is a member of LCAA and helps to coordinate its events. “It’s important to have an outlet and use a different part of your brain.” During the opening of the exhibit, prizes were awarded to students in different categories for each grade.

LCAA also opened a themed membership exhibit in its Steinmetz Gallery titled “The Natural World.” The exhibit features 11-by-14-inch paintings from members of the organization, each depicting a different scene found in nature, such as landscapes, bodies of water and wildlife. The exhibit will remain in the gallery until April 23 and may

be visited during LCAA’s regular hours of Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. This summer, LCAA will also host a variety of art classes and camps for kids. On Saturdays, April 29, May 6 and May 13, the organization will host “Clay Days,” a course that will explore different techniques when working with clay and creating sculptures. On Saturdays, April 15, April 22 and April 29, “Painting Primer” will be held at LCAA to introduce students to multiple painting mediums.

On Saturdays, June 17 and 24, LCAA will host a sketchbook challenge. For the challenge, students will receive a sketchbook and will be encouraged to fill it with drawings as they hone their skills throughout the summer. At the end of the summer, each sketchbook will be displayed at an exhibit to be judged, and awards will be given out to artists for their work.

From Monday, July 10, to Friday, July 14, a painting camp will be held at LCAA for youths between the ages of 10 and 16. Participants in the camp will utilize mediums such as watercolor paint, acrylic paint and mixed media to create pieces inspired by nature. An art show to display their work will be held on July 14, at 12:30 p.m.

“We want to encourage people to bring their children to creative classes and get them involved with the arts,” Keller said. “The more you get young people involved, the better.”

LCAA also offers art classes for adults throughout the year. For more information, visit www.lcaaonline.org.

Every spring, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) sets out to stock streams and lakes across the state with trout. This routine service is primarily provided to maintain the population of trout for anglers who utilize these locations for trout fishing, but it also serves as a way for student volunteers from local schools to get handson experience and to learn about the process. In the Southern End, students from the Penn Manor, Solanco and Lampeter-Strasburg school districts work closely with PFBC each year to assist with stocking local bodies of water. The trout stocking is accomplished over the course of several months via scheduled sessions. This year, the first session was held on March 10. Groups of students gathered at a designated meeting place to await the arrival of a convoy of trucks carrying PFBC officers and volunteers who were transporting the trout. Once the students joined the stocking team, the coalition traveled to multiple local streams and prepared to stock them. Students and volunteers lined up and used buckets and nets to carry the trout to the water and release them.

Trout stocking frompg 1

The students who participate in the program are those in each school’s life skills class. “It’s a really fun learning activity for students,” said Laura Norton, a job trainer at Lampeter-Strasburg High School, referring to the trout stocking. “We do a lot of community projects. Opportunities for hands-on experience like the trout stocking are very enticing to the kids.”

Prior to the actual stocking procedures, a PFBC officer visited each of the participating classes to educate students on the process. Students learned about safety protocols, the importance of fish stocking, native and invasive species of trout and ecology. The officer also offered insight on different positions and career paths within PFBC. The life skills classes focus on providing kids with disabilities with tools that will

“It’s a lot of community-based instruction. We give the students a chance to apply the skills they learn in the classroom out in the world,” said Kim Ingram, who teaches the life skills class at LampeterStrasburg High School.”

Many life skills classes incorporate aspects of community service. In addition to assisting with the trout stocking, the students from Solanco High School work with Solanco Neighborhood Ministries to fill bags of nonperishable food once a week. The students then deliver the

items to elementary schools so that the kids can bring home meals for the weekend.

“Our students love giving back to the community,” said Brenda Stively, a job trainer at Solanco High School. “Many of the kids in the class will meet with the group of

volunteers to help with the fish stocking even on days that we don’t go as a class.” Students from Solanco have assisted with each stocking session since the first day and will conclude their participation of the season with a final session on Friday, April 21.

Work and play and music

The contrast between work and play will be examined in the context of music, comedy, song, and dance when the Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) drama department presents “Stop, Time,” a spring cabaret event to be held on the LMS stage on Thursday through Sunday, April 20 to 23. Performances on April 20, 21, and 22 will be at 7 p.m., and the April 23 show will be at 3 p.m. All shows will be discounted for students.

“Stop, Time” will feature 14 cast members singing 14 songs from musicals and movies. According to director Dean Sauder, the first half of the show will focus on songs related to work and jobs. The first song will be “9 to 5,” associated with the movie and musical of the same name.

Seniors Jinge Ma, Julie Eshenauer-Rivera, and Abby Brubaker, will each have a solo in the number. The second half of the show will begin with “Footloose,” also a movie and later a musical, to introduce the more playful subjects, followed by “Stop, Time” from the movie and show “Big.” The song is sung by Brubaker and EshenauerRivera, playing two mothers who, according to Dean, “wish they could stop time and

delve back into childhood a bit.” Eshenauer-Rivera will also solo on “Me and the Sky” from “Come From Away.”

“Seize the Day” from “Newsies” will be performed by Micah Sauder, who will also sing “The Other Side” from “The Greatest Showman” with Caleb Metzler. The two will pair up again for “The Book Report” from “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.”

Metzler will solo on “Trashin’ the Camp,” from “Tarzan.”

Dean pointed out that the songs are not chosen for their familiarity. “We try to do songs that people may not know,” he said.

Metzler said that the show will give audience members a chance to step back from their own lives. “(They can) reflect on the past and what (they) want from the future,” he pointed out.

Eshenauer-Rivera added, that she hopes the songs will give attendees a meaningful glimpse into the themes. “I think they will enjoy how work and play can go hand in hand, and in the second half enjoy the small moments that are really important,” she said.

While rehearsing for a show is hard work, the students who are taking part are finding the fun in their preparation. “I enjoy the singing,”

Chicken barbecue slated

said Ma, who added that time with her classmates involved in musical endeavors is fun to her.

Both Micah and Brubaker lauded the choreography Katelyn Coryell has designed for the program. Brubaker noted that the steps for “Footloose” and “9 to 5” “really match the energy of the song.” Eshenauer-Rivera will serve as student choreographer on “When I Grow Up”

from “Matilda.”

Eshenauer said that working with the creative team, which includes Dean and Coryell, has been especially enjoyable. “It has been great to collaborate with Dean and Katelyn,” she said. “We have been allowed to offer creative input.”

Tickets, which are necessary to attend, may be purchased at by calling the box office at 717-740-2456.

Lady Pioneers move to 7-0 in lacrosse

The girls’ lacrosse team picked up three more wins over the last week, moving their early season record to 7-0 overall.

Friday, March 31, the girls blew past Central York in non-league action. A 14-1 first half sparked the 18-3

road win. Rowan Kimmel led a balanced attack with seven goals. Leigha Saurbaugh (1a) and Ryann Logan (2a) each scored a hat trick while Bethany Stoltzfus and Sophia Labrecque each scored twice with Abigail Welchans, Hannah Cissne, Trinity Wise (2), Abigail Wolff (2) and Denlinger con-

tributing with assists.

At Cocalico Monday night, April 3, the girls posted their closest win of the season, holding off the Eagles 12-6.

“We knew Cocalico is a team stocked with fast and determined athletes and a slew of college commits to boot,” said head coach Marshall Krebs. “This was a game that was going to be competitive, and it lived up to its billing.

“Two things gave us the upper hand: our defense including six saves and some critical clears from keeper Jordan Dilling, and an attack that utilized the skills of the personnel we have,” he added. “We were down two players for a 3:30 span in the second half but the defense was spirited and determined.”

The Pioneers, up 7-3 at the half, got a three goal, one assist effort from both Saurbaugh and Kimmel. Labrecque, a freshman, chipped in with two goals and two assists. Stoltzfus (1g), Logan (1g) and Welchans (3a) rounded out the offensive stats.

L-S earned its second league win on Wednesday, using a 9-2 first half run over Warwick to spark a 17-6 final. Kimmel tallied eight goals while Labrecque dished four assists and notched a hat trick along with Stoltzfus (1a) to highlight the top scorers.

BASEBALL

The baseball team used a six-run fifth inning to spark a 9-3 non-league win over Ephrata on Monday, April 3. L-S pounded out 15 hits on the day with Anthony Turek going 2-4 with 3RBI. Justin White was 3-3 with 2RBI and Logan Leaman also had 2RBI

with his double in the fourth inning.

Peyton Harsh picked up the win with nine strikeouts and four walks, giving up just two hits over five innings. Mason Coe gave up three earned runs in the top of the seventh.

The Pioneers were coming off a non-league road win at CD East on Friday, March 31. Turek struck out seven, walked three and scattered three hits in a complete 1-0 victory.

L-S scored the only run of the game in the second inning. See singled, stole second and scored on Groff’s two out base hit to left field.

At Solanco on Wednesday, Leaman’s 3-4, 3RBI effort sparked a 10-7 victory while Long’s ten strikeouts helped anchor the defense.

Solanco scored once in the first, but L-S took the lead for good with a four-run third inning. Both teams scored five runs each over the last two innings, but the damage was done.

TENNIS

After a 5-2 league win over Ephrata on Thursday, March 30, the Pioneers suffered their first shutout of the season against Cedar Crest Monday, April 3.

Highlighting the win against the Mounts were the doubles play of Justin Gouger and Kenny Finn (8-2 at No. 1) and Cole Teaman and Spencer Teaman (8-1 at No. 2).

Kyle Pawson added a dominating 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles while S. Teaman (No. 2) and C. Teaman (No. 3) both won in straight sets.

At home against Warwick on Wednesday, L-S posted a 4-1 win. The Teaman brothers secured straight set wins while Owen Lapp and Pawson earned a 6-2, 6-0 No. 1 doubles win and Gouger and Finn were solid at No. 2, winning 6-0, 6-1.

TRACK

The track teams split results against Conestoga Valley last Monday, April 3 and turned in some outstanding performances along the way.

The girls’ team pulled out a 77.5-72.5 squeaker with the pole vaulters getting the nod.

“That meet came down to the pole vault and Natalie Holland (8-0), May Carl (7-0) and Meadow Shussler (7-0) swept,” noted head coach Cal Esh. “And Lyndi Wall tied a long-standing record in the 200 (Sara Brackbill - 1997) with a blistering 25.7.”

Wall also won the 100.

Elly Bruner and Maggie Swarr each won three events with Bruner handling the jumps (long, triple, and

high) and Swarr controlling the throws (shot, discus, and javelin) as the top point getters.

Kelsey McTaggert chipped in with seconds in the shot and discus and was third in the javelin.

Back on the track, Kauffman won the 3200 and Magagna was tops in the 800. They joined Smecker and Coe for a win in the 4x800 relay.

Despite a 97-53 loss, the boys’ team also turned in some standout performances. Freshman Collin Shelley won the shot put and the pole vault team of Aidan Wiley, Greyson Myers and Carter Weaver swept the competition.

On the track, Smith, Devine, and Colin Whitaker posted their own sweep, taking the 3200. Whitaker was also tops in the mile while Stoler claimed the 800. Stoner, Devine, Whitaker and Colosi also joined to win the 4x800 relay.

SOFTBALL

After suffering losses in each of their first four nonleague games, the softball team opened Section Two play Monday, April 3 with an 8-5 victory over Ephrata.

“We’ve played some tough teams to start the season,” said head coach Earl Rutledge. “We were also missing Julia Gerard who is slated to catch for us this year. We also have three inexperienced pitchers that are trying to find their way,” he added. “We do have the capability of scoring a lot of runs, unfortunately we are giving up more right now. We hope to turn things around this week.”

Sophia Labrecque advances the ball for the Pioneers during their 18-3, nonleague win at Central York on March 31.

The Pioneers fell behind 30 after three innings before rallying to victory with two runs in both the fourth and sixth innings and taking charge with a four-run seventh. Brooke Zuber (2-4 1 RBI), Paige Baxter (3-4,5 RBI) and Gabby Hiles (1-4, 2 RBI) each collected RBI hits in the seventh.

Maura Savoca went the distance in the circle, allowing six hits while striking out one and walking three.

Kara Scranton also collected two hits in Lampeter’s 10hit attack.

The Pioneers made it 2-0 in section play with a convincing 14-4, five inning win over visiting Solanco Wednesday.

“That’s a good team and they were on a roll,” said Rutledge. “But we got out of that bases loaded, no outs first

inning. That was huge. If they capitalize there, the outcome could have been very different.”

L-S stopped Solanco in that first inning, then turned around and scored four in the bottom half. Solanco came back with two in the top of the second but then the wheels fell off as L-S sent 12 batters to the plate, took advantage of three errors, and collected five of their 12 hits for a commanding 12-2 lead. The rest was just a matter of what inning the game would end.

Hiles (2-3, 3RBI), Zuber (3-4, 2RBI) and Meck (2RBI) were the RBI leaders.

Raub struck out two, walked three and gave up two hits over the first two innings and Baxter scattered five hits, and struck out two in relief.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

The Pioneers’ 3-0 record quickly moved to 3-2 as L-S dropped a heartbreaking 7-6 non-league outing at Central York on March 31 and then suffered a 9-4 defeat at the hands of Cocalico in the section opener on Monday.

The Eagles exploded for six first quarter goals and never looked back. Chase Barber and KJ Kessler handled the scoring for L-S with two goals and one assist each.

Bryce Thomas was busy in goal recording 15 saves.

L-S got back on track with a solid 7-2 win over Warwick last Wednesday, April 12. Holding a 4-2 lead at the half, the Pioneers took control when they denied the Warriors in the second half while racking up three goals.

Kessler was the only two goal scorer.

Putting for Miracles

including gift baskets and gift cards. Several vendors participating in the event have also donated items that may be bid on during the auction, and buyers will be able to collect their purchases during the closing ceremony of the tournament.

Over 20 vendors and nonprofits will be set up at Leisure Lanes during the event, including Texas Roadhouse of Lancaster, Blankets of Honor, local crafters and stands that will sell baked goods. Participants will also have the option to purchase goods from five food trucks: Black Diamond Café, Apple Crate, Big Bark Chew BBQ, Dough & Arrows and Krazy Kones. Putting for Miracles is still accepting vendors, and the deadline to register as a vendor is Saturday, May 6. For more information, contact puttingformiracles @gmail.com.

The first Putting for Miracles tournament was held in August 2022 and was organized by Dave Chobanoff. For many years, Chobanoff has participated in multiple programs though the Children’s Miracle Network to raise money for children’s hospitals. He began exploring different ways that he could fundraise for the cause, which led to the organization of the mini golf event. The tournament attracted dozens of sponsors and over 60 players and raised more than $5,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network. Attendees were paid a visit by Warrior Gannon and his family, who shared their experience with receiving critical care through the network.

Chobanoff knew when he organized the first event that he wanted it to become a yearly tradition and grow in size and scope this year.

“It’s shaping up to be much larger this year. We’re already exceeding many of our expectations,” Chobanoff said. “It was still successful last year; even if I had only raised 100 bucks, it would have been worth it.”

Chobanoff also noted that many players from last year have already signed up to participate again, and he has incorporated feedback from the players to apply to the second tournament.

To register for the event, visit https://tinyurl.com/putting formiracles.
